𝕔𝕙𝕒𝕡𝕥𝕖𝕣 𝕠𝕟𝕖
This is the magic realm. All who reside in this world can use magic at will. Thus, magic has become a natural part of everyone's daily life. A gift believed to have been bestowed by God. Its importance is so great that one's level of mastery even determines one's social status.
But deep within a certain forest…
A deer trembles, watching a certain ravenette working out, pumping up a weight of the dumbbell that no human can lift.
…there is one who stands in opposition to the world's rule.
MASH BURNEDEAD puts the large dumbbell on its holder with a huff as he lifts a paper bag of cream puffs. He takes one and munches on the soft texture of the pastry. "Nothing like a cream puff after pumping." He mutters to himself as the terrified deer stares at him in disbelief.
"Mash! Are you done?"
And then there's this devil's child.
Mash turns to another ravenette as he finishes his cream puff. "Luffy," he greets him. "Yes, I'm just finished. What about you?" He asks as he takes another cream puff and reaches out for the other to take it.
"I've finished mine, too." Luffy grinned, taking a seat beside the golden eyed ravenette. He accepts the cream puff in delight. "Thanks." He smiles.
The corner of his lips lift up slightly. "It's delicious, right?" Mash asks his companion as Luffy nods his head. "Mhm. But meat is better," he claims with pride.
"Of course meat is better. They provide proteins for us," Mash sighs before standing up. "C'mon, let's go home." He reaches out his hand to the other, which is taken.
Luffy gets on his feet and rests both of his hands behind his head. "What do you think the old man will make for dinner?" He asks randomly.
"Luffy, it's not even lunchtime yet."
"Do we push it or pull it?"
Luffy hums, tilting his head to the side as he scrunches his eyebrows. "I've opened this door before, but I don't remember. You made me confused, Mash."
"Sorry…"
"It's nothing. We'll just do whatever we can to open it." The shorter ravenette suggests. "Okay."
Crack
"AAAHHHH!"
"Oh, hey pops." Mash says nonchalantly as he notices the older man's presence. "We're back."
"Yo, old man!" Luffy raises his hand cheerfully.
"All you had to do was open the door, not rip it off its hinges!" Regro exclaims, making the young ravenette look down. "Sorry…" Luffy steps in, "Don't yell at him, old man! I was the one who told him to just rip it off if he can't open it!"
"Then why didn't you open it?!"
"Sorry…"
"N-No, it's alright… as long as you understand what you did…" Regro mutters blankly. 'They're so amenable. How could I get mad at them?'
"We'll fix it!"
"Wait—AAAHHHH!!!" Regro screams, watching as his two adopted sons smash the poor door at its frame. "TURN IT! YOU HAVE TO TURN IT!"
However, the pounding of the door is too loud, so they cannot hear him. "Weird… it won't go back in." Mash tilts his head to the side confusedly as Luffy hums. "Mash, you have to turn it. Put the door by the shape of the door frame," he suggests.
Regro cries dramatically as he covers his mouth, crocodile tears flow on his face. 'Luffy is smart despite not going to school!' He mutters in his head.
"Like this?" Mash asks, turning the wooden door according to the door frame's shape. Luffy nods his head and grins. "Yep! Just like that!" He pats the taller ravenette's head proudly.
Mash raises an eyebrow, "But how do we stick it back?" He asks curiously as Luffy smiles.
"Don't ask me, I'm not a shipwright." He dismisses nonchalantly. "Why a shipwright?" Mash tilts his head to the side. "Not a carpenter?"
Luffy pauses, his mind goes blank. "Uh… I don't know." He shrugs. "It's the same, they still need to fix and build."
"Forget about that for now. How's your training routine?" Regro asks the two ravenette.
"Done!"
"Done," Mash murmurs. "But there's something I want to ask you, pops." Luffy glances at him curiously. "Why do you have us do nothing but work out?" He asks, as Luffy blinks in realisation. "I've been meaning to ask you that too! Not for me though, it's about Mash after all."
Regro looks at them silently before lowering his head, his eyebrows furrow. "Because you are…"
'Because you are different. Since you can't use magic, this is the least I can do for you…'
"Is it because he can't use magic?" Luffy asks, making the poor old man flinch in shock. Slowly, he nods his head. “Yes, that’s true. Mash can’t use magic, so he needs a way to protect himself from the world. This is the least I can do for him,” he admits softly before locking his eyes with Luffy’s round ones. “I hope you will help him too, Luffy.”
The said teen grins and nods his head. “Of course I will, old man. He’s my brother after all.” He wraps an arm around Mash’s neck, headlocking him, making him stumble due to their height difference. “This guy wouldn’t survive without me. I won’t die before him,” Mash releases himself from the shorter male’s arm. “That’s a promise,” he mutters. “Right?”
The cheerful ravenette nods his head eagerly. “Yep!” Regro frowns, “You shouldn’t promise something like that, Luffy. What if one day—”
“You worry too much, old man. It’s not good for your health,” He cuts the older man off. “Plus, I’m strong. No one can kill me.” He exclaims with confidence, making Regro shake his head. “Whatever you say, kid. You must’ve gotten that confidence from Garp.”
Luffy makes a face when he hears his grandfather’s name. “Ew, no. I don’t want to get anything from him.”
“Gramps will kill you if he hears that.” Mash comments on his remark, and Lufy’s shoulders slump. “Then I’m not sure if I can keep that promise.” The bowl cut ravenette scoffs and ruffles the latter’s hair before putting something on his head. Luffy glances up to see his beloved straw hat, making him grin with glee.
“My hat!” Mash shakes his head, “You left it back in the forest. You’re lucky I noticed it.”
“Shihihihi! Thanks, Mash!”
“Alright, boys. I’m heading out.” Regro says curtly. “I’ve told both of you countless times before, but you must never venture out in the city.”
“We won’t.” Mash replies shortly, making Regro smile softly. “Both of you are good sons, Mash, Luffy. So amenable. I’ll return soon.”
As Regro leaves, Mash suddenly takes out a piece of paper and gestures at Luffy to come closer. A poster of Goblin Cream Puffs special menu is printed on the white sheet of paper. The two brothers exchange looks before the straw hatted one grin.
“We’re sorry, pops, but we cannot ignore the call of an empty stomach.”
“Wait, Mash.” The ravenette’s steps come into a halt as his brother calls out to him. “Don’t you think we should draw a magic mark on your face?” Luffy asks as he takes a black marker. “C’mon, let me draw one on your face.”
Mash obliques, as he sits on the chair for Luffy to reach his face. As the straw hatted ravenette draws the magic mark, Mash speaks. “Luffy,” the said teen hums. “I’ve actually been wondering about another thing.”
“Tell me, I’m listening.” He replies, his eyes focusing on drawing.
“Why doesn’t pops worry about you?”
His hand freezes at the question as Mash continues, “You don’t have a mark too. Shouldn’t pops be worried about you too instead of me alone?”
“...” Luffy closes the pen marker and puts it back to its place. “We’re different, Mash. You don’t have any magic,” he pauses as he takes a seat across the other. “But you don’t have any curse either.”
Luffy lifts his hand and stares at it. “I don’t have any magic marks, but I have a curse mark." He mutters, showing the mark on his neck. "That makes us different, Mash. I also have my scar to trick people around.” He then locks his eyes with the golden ones. “I have enough power to protect myself. Old man is worried about you because you only depend on your strength, while the others have supernatural powers.”
Mash stares at him silently as he continues. “But that doesn’t make you weak. You’re strong, Mash, even stronger than me! Isn’t that awesome?” Luffy exclaims, lighting up the mood. He stands up and approaches the honey-eyed male, ruffling his hair softly. “Let’s go. You don’t want the cream puffs out, right?” Mash gasps and immediately follows his brother, running slightly to catch up to him as he mumbles to himself. “Why do I feel like we’ve forgotten something…?”
They arrive at the city, and Luffy frowns at the people who use magic for anything. “Couldn’t they just do stuff by hand?” Mash comments as he stares at the citizen. Luffy nods his head, “I know right? Magic just makes people lazy and too dependent.”
“We’ll take 10 of the special,” Mash orders as the man nods his head. “Sure thing.” The ravenette hands him the weird-shaped coins, which make the man dumbfounded. “Uh…”
Luffy immediately takes the coins and apologises. “Sorry, he’s so excited that he crushed these coins.” He reformed the coins back to its shape before giving it back to the man. “Here you go.”
The poor man is terrified.
“Thank you for waiting,” Mash accepts the cream puffs with a silent enlightenment, making Luffy smile. “Thank you very much."
The wind blows softly, bringing Mash's hood down as he gasps. Luffy widens his eyes and helps him take his hood back on his head. He sighs, “It’s a relief we made your mark,” he mutters as the wind blows again, this time taking his straw hat down to his nape. Luckily, it has a string around Luffy’s neck so it doesn’t get blown away.
The straw hatted ravenette pouts as he puts his hat back onto his head. “Gee, the wind sure hates us.” Mash nods his head as he munches on a cream puff.
However, they don’t realise how the citizens are looking at them, or specifically, the straw hatted ravenette.
“H-Hey, did you see that?”
“Y-You saw that too?”
“Yes, I did!...”
“The curse mark…”
“We need to report this!”
“Wonder what everyone was all riled up about back there…” Mash mumbles as he swallows the cream puff. Luffy hums, “Don’t mind them. They’re just thrilled to see two handsome teenagers like us,” he replies as Mash looks at him weirdly.
However, he’s quick to switch his attention to the pastry in his hand. “So yummy…” he murmurs, not noticing the police officer in front of him.
Luffy is quick to react as he grabs Mash’s hand to stop him, and he gets a success in doing so. But the police officer walks straight and bumps into the munching boy, and earns some cream on his suit.
“Oh, sorry.” Being the good boy he is, Mash apologises.
“Hey, hey! Can’t you see there’s an officer working here?!” The officer exclaims angrily. “I’m a proud member of the magic police, here to protect ordinary folks like you, don’t you know?! And do I get any thanks? No! My only reward is lousy, bottom barrel pay!”
Luffy steps in front of Mash with a frown on his face. “So? Why are you telling us? It’s not like we can do anything about that dirty government of yours!” He remarks, glaring daggers at the older man.
“What did you say, brat?!”
“I didn’t know the proud member of the magic police is deaf,” He says mockingly. “I pity you.”
The officer clenches his fists and grits his teeth, “Why you—!”
“Luffy, don’t.” Mash grabs the shorter teen’s shoulder before he can pick a fight with the officer. He hands out his half-eaten cream puff at the officer. “Would you like a cream puff? You seem like you could use it.” He offers, making Luffy scrunches his face in dismay. If it was him, he wouldn’t offer anyone his food except his brother.
However, that just makes the man’s blood boil even more. “You got some nerve! Bratty little punk!” He slaps away the cream puff from the ravenette’s hand. “Picking a fight with an officer? Don’t you know I’m the law of this land?! And what about my uniform, punk?!”
Luffy pulls Mash back to his side and grabs a hold of the officer’s uniform and rips it off. He throws the cloth away as he glares at the older man. “There you go. All clean without that government uniform.” He smiles threateningly. “And for your information, your law doesn’t work on me. God's law doesn’t work on the devils either, right?”
“Y-You…” The officer quickly covers his bare chest with his hand as Luffy narrows his eyes at him. “Talk to my brother like that again and I’ll beat the shit out of you.”
“What’s the problem, Terry?” A new voice is heard as the officer, Terry, turns to the source of the voice. “It’s these kids, Brad!” He exclaims as Luffy scoffs. “These kids got you squealing like that?” The new man, Brad Coleman, raises an eyebrow.
He then widens his eyes when they land on Luffy’s neck. “...is that him? The cursed brat from that report?’
“What are you looking at, ‘Brat’?” The said man irks at the straw hatted teen.
However, before he or Luffy get to continue, Regro comes running and grabs both Mash and Luffy. “Please excuse my sons!” He runs straight to their house.
“How many times have I told you?! Do not go to the city on your own!”
“I’m really sorry… it won’t happen again…” Mash slumps his shoulders, feeling guilty. Regro’s anger immediately disappears. “Well… that’s good I suppose…” He mutters. “Just be more careful next time, alright?” He then turns to the straw hatted ravenette. “You too, Luffy. Don’t pick a fight with citizens,” Luffy looks away, huffing before nodding his head. “...fine, even though he was the one who bumped into Mash…”
Regro nods his head with satisfaction. “As punishment, repeat this morning’s training routine.”
“Hell yeah!”
“Okay,” Mash replies calmly, to opposition from Luffy. “By the way, the rest of these cream puffs are for you.” He hands out the paperbag to the older man, which he accepts. “Oh, thank you.”
“What are you looking at?”
“The squirrel is trembling.”
Mash hums at his statement. “Are you slacking off, Luffy? Pops wouldn’t like that.” He murmurs. Luffy shakes his head as he stares at the poor squirrel. “Nah, I’ve already doubled my training for today. So that makes up for the punishment,”
“Can it work like that?”
“Yeah, for me.”
Mash puts down the large dumbbell onto the ground as Luffy glances at him. “Done already?” The taller ravenette nods his head. “Five minutes is all I need when I put my mind to it.” He replies. “Let’s go home for more cream puffs.”
“Yea, let’s go.” Luffy nods his head. “For some reason, I have a bad feeling.”
“Hm… push or pull again?” Mash murmurs as Luffy chuckles. “Let me open it.” He reaches out his hand to open the door, but freezes when he hears a voice.
“You knew we’d come for that kid,” Mash widens his eyes. “That’s why you hid him.” Luffy grips the doorknob tightly. “Magic is a gift from God. That kid doesn’t have a mark on his face, instead, he has one on his neck. He’s cursed. You know the curse is the opposition to God, right? Keeping him is a sin. His existence itself is a threat,” Mash clenches his fists.
“In other words… they must die.”
Regro struggles to breath as the officer holds him up in the air. His eyes narrow, his mind travels back to the moments he met Mash and Luffy.
Mash was just an infant when Garp handed him to Regro, just before he killed himself. He gave him a reason to live, as the baby needed him.
However, Garp sent Luffy to him when Mash was a mere six-years-old kid. Same like the unmarked boy, this cursed child needed him too. Luffy might be a troublemaker at first, but later on Mash’s kind nature became his. Both of them are good and kind, and they need him. To be protected from cruel fate.
“...RUN, MASH! LUFFY!” Regro screams on top of his lungs. “GO ON, MASH, LUFFY! GET OUT OF HERE!”
“Pipe down, will you?!” Brad attacks him with his magic, but Regro keeps screaming. “RUN AWAY!”
“Last chance, old man. Before I make you really regret this—”
BANG!
Mash pushes an officer’s head as Luffy walks in, his eyes glaring at Brad. “Regret what, Brat?” He asks, a hint of sarcasm is audible in his tone.
“Hey, punk! I haven’t forgotten what you did—” Terry doesn’t get to finish his sentence as Mash rips his uniform off, and his exe has stopped working. Before he can recover, Mash slaps him countlessly until he falls.
Brad stares at Mash with wide eyes as he sees no marks on his face. “You don’t just keep a cursed kid, but also an unmarked? This is more than a sin, old man.” He narrows his eyes at the man. “An unmarked and cursed child… you’ve gone too far!”
Luffy steps closer, “Oh yeah? Wanna see how far I can go?” He threatens. “I’ll show you what makes me a cursed child—”
He cuts himself off when Mash steps ahead of him. “Let me, Lufy.” The straw hatted teen raises an eyebrow. “He hurt pops,” Mash mutters, his bangs covering his eyes. “Both of you always do your best to protect me. This time, let me protect you.”
Luffy softens his eyes as a smile makes its way to his lips. He steps back and chuckles.
“They’re yours, brother.”
