DM Disclaimer: Due to my range of physical and mental disabilities I frequently experience brain fog and fatigue, and my social energy varies day-to-day. Taking a break from poetry to talk about etymology: what the hell, Absolute?

Its etymology is absolutus, from Latin.

Ab, the prefix meaning 'from', and 'solutus', which means loose, free, dissolute... I'm sure you get the gist of it.

So the term 'absolutus' means 'free from': case in point, absolute monarchy -> a monarchy whose powers are free from restrictions, parliament and whatnot. Yeah, checks out.

Turn to italian (my language), which mind you probably has more latin roots than any neolatin language out there (for crying out loud, we have the pope and church == latin) and... there's this thing called assimilation right?

Assimilation explained poorly by none other than me

Assimilation is when you make a new word, right? Oh, what beautiful etymology it has! Only, the sounds kind of clash with each other. Doesn't quite roll of the tongue. So, you make the offending sound more like the ones around it.

With this newfound knowledge, take a look at Italy's very own translation of 'absolute':

Assoluto

[Assoluto]

Yeah. Instead of saying absoluto*, the populace found it fit to drop the b for another s, birthing assoluto. That's alright, lots of languages do that.

But, a problem arises: ab- is a latin preposition, but so is a-, and this leads to assoluto looking like the lovechild of a- and solutus, and MIND YOU it would still make sense.

a-solutus. Not diluted. A 'monarca assoluto' is one whose powers are not separated and given to parliaments or whatever else. See the issue? If you know too much, you're led to thinking about the wrong word.
