Legendary Sunset. Last one from this location, I promise. A UNESCO world heritage site, the Giants Causeway is also regarded as one of the greatest natural wonders in the UK. The mostly hexagonal columns formed as a result of volcanic activity 50 to 60 million years ago. Though according to legend - which, let's face it, is usually more fun than science - the Causeway was built by the Irish giant Fionn Mac Cumhaill. Colour in the Sky.. Unfortunately I don't seem to get round to doing much editing these days, so you'll get three more shots of the Causeway as a result.. unlike the last three I posted recently, this set is actually from the first evening in this cool location. Sunset seemed a bit flat, but there was a short spell where there was enough colour and interest in the sky to get some nice photos. It took me a little while to set up with my new NiSi 150mm filter set and find the best settings to use. It was still a little bright, so I could really have done with a little stopper or similar ND filter. But I got there in the end. Giant('s Causeway) Moon. After the sun had pretty much set on the Giants Causeway, we were starting to pack up out photo gear, when one of the local photographers who I'd been chatting to earlier called across the way to make us turn around. A stunning spectacle had started to unfold above the hills behind the Causeway, with a warm orange full moon rising fast. What a sight! Obviously I had the wrong lens on to capture the scale of what I was seeing, and after some scrambling (and more swearing) I managed to have the camera back on the tripod with the zoom lens attached. Ballintoy Bay. Another one from this cute little bay on the Northern Irish coastline, and the first time that I got to play with my new @nisi.uk super-wide angle filter set. I actually got quite frustrated with them when I was setting up as I kept getting reflections of the inside of my lens in the shots (maybe the camera saying hi?) and I just couldn't work out what was wrong.. turns out it was just the angle of the sun that was somewhat unfavourable and awkward. Took me some time to work that out though.. 🙄 I guess the time of day wasn't ideal for shooting in anyway, the sun was still way too bright, yet also hazy. But with wanting to shoot the sunset on the Causeway nagging away in my head, I had to make the best of the situation somehow and capture the bay as best I could. Ballintoy Harbour. Another @gameofthrones film location, Ballintoy Harbour is a beautiful, somewhat hidden bay near the Giants Causeway. I originally picked it for a lunch stop as I found a little shack that serves amazing home cooked food down there. I would love to go back some time to explore and photograph the bay properly. Full Moon. In a previous post I hinted that we went back to the Dark Hedges at night to try and capture the beech tree lined road illuminated by the faint light of the full moon. Even thought I'm not completely happy with the outcome, I thought I'd share it anyway to see what you guys think. It was tricky to capture this scene for many reasons. First of all, despite the moon, it was so dark amongst the trees, that we couldn't work out where we stood during the day to capture the iconic tree tunnel. So the location this photo was taken from isn't perfect. Secondly, you need a pretty long exposure to get any kind of definition of the trees. Not a lot of light actually gets through to the ground. At the same time, when editing this shot, it was difficult to retain the night time feel, as increasing the highlights gives more of an odd daytime look. The Kingsroad. Another one from the 'Hedges. I spent a lot of time lying on the road, trying to get a shot without people.. Even though the road was used as film location before GoT, it was the latter that made it famous, and made visitor numbers soar. Dark Hedges. Any @gameofthrones fans out there? Apparently this location will be familiar to you. Having never seen the programme, I have no idea where or how it features, but from a photography point if view it really is quite stunning, maybe a little mysterious (if you ignore the hordes of selfie-tourists). The beech trees that form the natural tunnel along Bregagh Road in Ballymoney are over 200 years old. They were planted in the 1770s to create a dramatic approach to @gracehillhouse at the end, and are said to be haunted by a ghost called the Grey Lady. High Tide. This is one of the first pictures I took of the setting sun that evening, and also my current favourite. The sun was just about to break out from the upper layer of clouds, the waves were crashing higher than I anticipated, but having watched some local photographers the previous evening, I knew exactly where I wanted to position my tripod to get *the* shot. Mark @ifmad_mw was probably having a mini-heart attack as I was climbing around on the edge of the Causeway, trying to find my spot (which obviously is as close to the water as possible 😬) I'm actually still surprised that I didn't get soaked, or dropped a filter into the sea. Although.. my sunglasses nearly did (again). Yet again this picture shows -to me at least- what a huge difference filters make in landscape photography. Without the circular polarizer, there would have been little depth in the lower half of the image, and without the grad filter, the sky would have been washed out. Theres only so much you can bring back in Lightroom. Causeway Sunset. Over the Easter break I spent some time exploring the island of Ireland with my better half @ifmad_mw. Obviously the Giants Causeway was high on my list of places to visit, ideally at sunset. We had two chances for getting the shots we wanted, and I'm glad we were in the area long enough to have a good stab at this. The first evening was pretty hazy and the sun disappeared quickly without much colour. On the second evening, conditions were much better, and since we'd already scouted out a favourite spot to shoot from, setting up was far less stressful too 😂 This was also the first time I got to really play with my new @nisiglobal filter set for the super-wide angle lens. The best investment in photo accessories I made in a while, and it won't be long until I'll add some more glass to the collection too. The filters have no noticeable colour cast, and the holder set is constructed so well that even at 12mm you get no vignetting whatsoever. I'm totally sold on the brand!
