Leaving Fort Moultrie we crossed the new Ravenel Bridge into Charleston. This bridge was opened in 2005 to replace the Grace Memorial Bridge opened in 1929 and the Silas Pearman Bridge opened in 1966. This bridge is the third longest cable stayed bridge in the western hemisphere with the main span of 1546 feet and a total length of 13,200 feet.
The Pearman bridge design and construction was overseen by my father. All that remains of that bridge today is one pier on the Charleston side of the river.
