My brain isn't working well enough to get very deep in this but I'm so SO interested in finding out Beck and Joe are implying about Yellow's whole family situation....
Yellow's interactions with his father are always off putting, he claims his dad is his best friend but Roy's clearly only interested in subjecting his son to constant anguish and suffering, hiding in the walls to keep tabs on him and/or eating people to keep them from interfering in his relationship he has with his son. Roy either operates on a mindset of 'the only person that can traumatize and abuse my son is ME" in the family episode or he got hungry watching them eat the chicken bucket and let his cannibalistic urges get the best of him and shoved Yellow away so he wouldn't get caught in the crossfire. He doesn't seem interested in killing him, probably because it will end the prolonged misery he lives through and where's the fun in that? After all, as far back as the web series he attempted to stop Red from ending the simulation, happy to let Yellow be tortured and tormented for the cameras for as long as possible. And clearly he had some type of say in the situation.
And then there's Lesley, the second character that's been shown to have some control over the narrative, and the second character that may have a parental connection to Yellow. Her narrating Yellow's dream about community and the way she screams when he's hit by the car, the way she loses control in the attic and rages that he's not her real son. Becky and Joe didn't have to throw that in there at all, she could have just been the evil version of a children's show host in the same way DHMIS is the darker version of a children's educational puppet show. But she's got all these implications about her connection with him, she calls him her favorite, she talks to him the same way you'd talk to a little kid, keeps her voice calm and soothing until she has her little outbursts...
Is it a cautionary tale about abusive stage parents? Is it an allegory about how harmful it can be to a child's psychological state when forced into being a child actor? Of the systematic abuse they face? The stolen innocence? How the very people that are supposed to protect them are inflicting the most harm? The way they push him into role after role no matter the damage it may inflict on him psychologically/physically/emotionally with no care being paid to how it's affecting him? Will continue to affect him?
How much pain he's in is secondary only to the role he plays in the story, and they refuse to let that role end, no matter what.

Rateyes is yellow guy's maiden name? They say that in episode 4, this implies 2 things.
Roy's name is Roy Rateyes.
Yellow guy is married???????? "Maiden Name" refers to the last name one has before they get married and trade out for their spouse's last name. So saying Rateyes is Yellow guy's maiden name implies that hes married
Oh shit actually it might imply three things. Yellow guy trans?????

DHMIS Theories let's GOOOO
Yellow Guy: David. Roy and Leslie's kid. Killed in a car accident when Leslie was behind the wheel. Died around age 10 but it's been years since then, making him technically 38 now. He mentally fluctuates between the two ages.
Duck: David's beloved pet bird. Very old, gifted to david after his previous owner's death. May or may not be the reason that David is dead in the first place. Unkempt, mean, and a generally awful pet. He was hated by Leslie in particular and possibly Roy, but David loved him so much that the two are inseparable, even in a nightmarish abstraction, removed from memory.
Red Guy: Collaborator on Roy and Leslie's show. Never met David in the flesh, but knew about him and could tell how his memory colored the couple's imagination. Was initially devoted to honoring David's memory, until things started going downhill and he realized that the couple's feelings towards David and towards each other were darker than he could have anticipated.
Webseries is primarily about Red Guy and the allegorical fate of the show. Most of the commentary is about the state of media, its often conflicting agendas, and how it is colored by the personal lives of artists.
The TV show gets more personal, and goes a layer deeper. By focusing David and his mother, it displays a family crumbling in the face of tragedy, and the paralyzing nature of grief.

As you can probably tell from my headcanon for Lesley’s surname, I do have Lesley being Dennis/Yellow Guy’s mother in my stories, but I don’t give him the name that most people tend to give Lesley’s son (David). That’s because in my stories, there is...or, more accurately was, a David. He’s my world’s version of the Shy Imaginary Older Brother. Only here, he’s not so much actually imaginary as much as Dennis’s memory of him is so faint that he doesn’t actually remember he was a real person, since David died when Dennis was only about three years old, just starting to develop long term memory, and out of grief, neither Roy or Lesley really talked much about David, especially around Dennis.

Holly Rateyes. She’s the assumed cousin of yellow guy. We normally they just call her blue gal. Somber and content , she is a watchdog for Roy and pretends to befriend the main crew, she being made by Lesley .
She got brought in by Roy after she “ accidentally “ burnt the house down with her family in it and has psychotic issues and hears stuff she shouldn’t and her scarf is the only thing that protects her from Roy and is the last thing she has of her parents .
She gets worse what the main guys get, that being She’s locked in the attic and being fed Roy’s oats and aspic Twice a day. She expresses her feelings through drawing, and can communicate by code even if she can speak normal English. she lived in Mulhoven with her family and had a job. Her life was picture perfect before the accident. She then was offered a job to manage and oversee what would be Roys Buisiness.
