the thing about the time travelers is that being uprooted from their own time to another fundamentally breaks every single one of them. It’s the shock of it, the way the magic and the experience utterly changes them, remakes them into something that isn’t exactly human anymore and then puts them back together and says “now go try to live your life again.”
it doesn’t matter if they fall through like claire, if they smash through with a bloody purpose like geillis, or they walk through with a prayer like brianna. they all belong to the faeries now and there’s nothing they can do to get around it. down to the way they speak to each other - roger says some pretty fairy words that donner recognizes, speaking a language only they understand. claire’s magical knowledge can’t save her from being hunted and tried as a witch, a faerie, a traitor, a murderess. ottertooth’s cassandra esque warnings of the future do nothing but cause strife among the same people he wanted to save.
even their morality has wholly changed into something else, something inhuman. roger says it himself in the premiere; when you’re scared and alone and desperate and there’s no way to get home, your sense of morality shifts and twists in a vain attempt to protect yourself.
so a doctor becomes a murderess and a freedom fighter becomes a slaver and a holy man watches while a woman and her child are drowned and an independent modern yank loses every shred of what made her stand out and a man who fought the never ending death march of genocide goes back in time and stands frozen as he listens to a woman just like him be tortured and raped and he stands there and does nothing because he’s small and tired and old and he wasn’t even supposed to land in this year and he didn’t even meet his own fucking people anyway and hes scared, so scared, and he just wants to go home.
and geillis and ottertooth and donner are all forced to die in this terrifying, human world. they can never go back to the realm of the faeries because it never even existed. claire going back does not heal her, it breaks her even more. there’s no going back, there’s no going forward, because they are the ones that are wrong now. and all their worst traits get amplified and all their best traits twist into something wicked until geillis’ fanatical devotion to the independence of her people - to the detriment of all others - is what gets her killed. ottertooth’s steely resolve does nothing but get him stubbornly stuck alone in that storm. and donner’s fear for the future eats him whole, and a man that shouldn’t even be in this time lights a match that doesn’t even exist yet, and realizes that his fear will never get him back home but if all he does is drop the match and let the flame consume him, he can find his damning release all the same.

MALVA DIED BECAUSE SHE LOVED CLAIRE. THATS WHO SHE LOVED ALL ALONG, NOT HER EVIL FATHER OR HER TWISTED BROTHER OR EVEN IAN OR JAMIE, IT WAS CLAIRE WHO SHE FIRST FELT AND RECEIVED REAL, UNCONDITIONAL LOVE FROM

i can appreciate thomas seeing in claire and jamie, two thoroughly improper people who have lived sinful lives, basically every virtue he has ever held dear and being completely unsure of how to move on from his whole world being turned upside down but also, i just do not like this man at all he suffers from aunt jocasta syndrome which is when we take this really heinous aspect of someone’s personality and ignore that, it’s just window dressing, and give them an arc that is about something completely different and we never deal with or even acknowledge that a core part of this person is just being a super evil piece of shit.
what i will say is that i appreciate that despite all the harm malva did to claire specifically, claire is still loudly and stubbornly in that girl’s corner. she sees so clearly that nothing but evil has been done to this child her whole life and even as thomas is giving his last confession, she will not let him paint malva (and her mother, also clearly a victim of abuse) as the whore to claire’s own madonna. shuts it down every time he tries it, even as she’s begging him not to confess. claire’s capacity for compassion is really amazing but also her dedication to defending the women around her makes me love her.

once again claire gets herself in some trouble and immediately makes friends with the first woman she meets, because claire is a supporter of women first, foremost, and always!!!

i like how young ian knows every secret jamie or claire keeps, not because they ever fucjing tell him anything but because they just like, forget they didn’t tell him and openly talk about their secrets in front of him lmao

brown being so fucking convinced jamie won’t straight murder him bc he’s “honorable” as if jamie doesn’t regularly commit violent crimes just because he like, is havin a bad day, jamie isn’t a bad man but he does like running his mouth and throwing hands, murder is probably one of the more tame crimes he’d commit to save claire

TBH this season of outlander, ive felt all the sweet and slow Jamie/Claire seasons were super cheesy but alllllll of their playful scenes or their scenes that were serious but not romantic (like the discussion they have at the beginning of Give Me Liberty) were all very good. Idk if that means that the acting was off a bit this season or if I’m just a hater but it’s weird lmao

favorite part of both 911 shows is when one of the call dispatchers wrestled with the weight of their job. Not a lot of stories zero in on the difficulties of 911 call dispatch (even the best copaganda doesn’t pay it any mind lmao) so it’s always really interesting when you get that aspect - Maddie’s old lady rival and how much the dead end calls completely ruined her mental health, the way Maddie herself got triggered into an awful spiral when reminded of her own history of abuse during a call, May struggling at detaching her emotions from the situation while staying alert and kind, Josh & Sue looking after the callers and making sure they’re healthy, and i like seeing that carry over into Grace’s stories.
She was much more isolated in her role initially but having her new friend Dave, someone who is wildly different from her but just as committed & passionate about helping people, working through a health emergency bc someone is on the phone and needs his help. I like seeing Grace shook up by the SWAT-ting call, and the way Judd tells her it’s not her job to be suspicious. It ties into the overreaching theme both shows touch on when it comes to firefighting or being a paramedic - sometimes, you don’t get closure for something that scars you. You can’t get stuck or unsettled by it, because the next caller could be in the middle of the worst day of their life and they need you to be focused for them. Grace has to go out and find that closure on her own, it’s not something she can just expect and she’s aware of that. Bad shit just happens sometimes and they have to figure out on their own how to handle it.

I like Malva a lot, she’s super weird and creepy, hates her religious freak father, and is immediately enchanted by Claire and Young Ian which clearly means she has great taste. I don’t want her to die in some weird incest pregnancy betrayal plot line

I love that our first glimpse of John this season (and in a long while bc they refuse to give me my lord John spin off) is just Lord John being like “Am I once again going to put my career, my life, and of course, my dignity on the line for the Frasers with little to no benefit for myself? Absolutely yes, of course, not even a question but I will hate myself the whole time at least.”

Ian’s new family at dinner: Hey, you’re from a completely different continent. Why don’t you tell us some fun lil stories?
Young Ian, who has never met a situation he couldn’t eagerly make 100x worse bc he’s so full of chaos, practically vibrating in his seat: Okay hilarious story so let me tell you about this one time I was kidnapped as a teenager and r-
His wife, who loves his chaos but also has brain cells: Maybe just sing a song instead.

1. I literally adore that Rollo got formally adopted alongside Young Ian, like after all the shit that happened that season to this poor tribe and at the end they just have this twitchy, loves to start shit everywhere he goes white kid who has one (1) friend he isn’t related to and that’s his dog and instead of being bummed they’re like “HOLY SHIT TWO FOR ONE WE SCORED”
2. So that echo of “flesh of our flesh bone of our bone” from the wedding vows was on purpose right? Because I loved it.

Jamie, trying to cheer Claire up: The hair is nice but damn I miss my big booty wife.
Claire, who missed white bread so much she invented it like two hundred years early: Oh she’ll be back soon enough.
