Saw the new character images for the second Butai Yu Yu Hakusho thanks to @iwroteyoualoveletter‘s posts.
...And I laughed out loud with delight when I realized who’s playing Suzaku. It’s always wonderful to watch actors shine in different roles, and I get such a kick out of seeing the promo/bromide images! It’s so neat to see the execution and details of makeup, costume, mood etc. across productions and shoots. Major props to the skilled artists/designers/teams behind these things.
I didn’t get into 2.5D until Touken Ranbu so that is why you get the comparisons in this post, haha. (Also they have so many shows and characters that it’s relatively easy to find the actors and their bromides popping up in different places.)
Tumblr media
Sakiyama Tsubasa: Urameshi Yusuke, Butai Yu Yu Hakusho / Ishikirimaru, Musical Touken Ranbu. Cocky fist-fighting delinquent-turned-spirit detective VS gentle anti-war Shinto sword-turned-guardian of history. Two very different characters, but both saving the world in green! My favourite colour, I have no complaints. (Random note: Putting these two particular images together amuses me because it looks like Ishikirimaru is going “???” at Yusuke.) Sakiyama Tsubasa rocks some very diverse roles, these happen to be two characters I really love, and basically I’m super biased. And watching him - or any of the actors, really - in the musicals is so impressive. The thought of the sheer stamina needed to get through a theatrical performance and then pull off a full-on boyband concert complete with high energy dance choreography and multiple costume changes wipes me out.
Tumblr media
Suzuki Hiroki: Kurama, Butai Yu Yu Hakusho / Mikazuki Munechika, Butai Touken Ranbu (and movie!). 1000 year old demon fox incarnated as a human VS 1000 year old sword incarnated as a human. Relative to the other roles being compared here, Kurama and Mikazuki might seem a lot more similar so you may not fully appreciate the actor’s range at first glance - but they’re arguably two of the most iconic, complex and beloved characters in their fandoms, I can imagine how many expectations there are for them, and Suzuki Hiroki carries them off with superb grace. (And he’s both an incredible actor and voice actor. I love his Hyakkimaru! Highly recommend his performance in Dororo if you have not already been so blessed to watch the 2019 anime adaptation. It’s heartbreakingly well-done.)
Tumblr media
Kizu Tsubasa: Suzaku, Butai Yu Yu Hakusho / Hakata Toushirou, Butai Touken Ranbu. Sadistic narcissist flute-playing demon who fancies himself a god VS super cheerful little dagger in human form who’s really into finance and investing. He has a wonderfully expressive face as Hakata, and his twitter account has a lot of hilarious behind-the-scenes photos of him goofing off in character with the other actors that crack me up (like this one, this one, and this one for example). I’ll admit Suzaku, one of the earlier villains, is not particularly top-of-mind for me personally. But he definitely stands out as one of the first Really Big Bosses of the story. (Between him and Randou, you never really "see” Randou till the end, but Suzaku inserts his personality and presence into the narrative very visibly). I’m really looking forward to seeing how Kizu Tsubasa tackles this performance!
The entire cast (not just the actors in this post!) looks fantastic, and I can’t wait to see how they reimagine the narrative and dynamics for this stage play. Not to mention the creative visual effects!

Poll results!
Hello everyone! 4 months ago, I released a popularity poll out of curiosity to see the general consensus. I will likely do this again in the future with more characters being introduced and more development. It was a lot of fun!

Joint 3rd (36 votes)
Astushi Nakajima
Ryunosuke Akutugawa
2nd: Chuya Nakahara (with 166 votes)
1st: Osamu Dazai (is there any surprise?) (with 180 votes)
Here are my predictions from before starting this poll. Tell me how you think I did!
Osamu Dazai
Chuya Nakahara - Both 1st and 2nd place couldn’t be any other two, I’m aware of just how popular they are.
Ranpo Edogawa
Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Doppo Kunikida
Akiko Yosano - I most certainly overshot her... She’s a strong character, bit crazy and is one of the most prominent female.
Oda Sakunosuke - And him... But he’s such a beautiful human...
Edgar Allan Poe - I don’t think I was far off. I know who the fangirls like!
Louisa Alcott - Nevermind… Okay, she’s adorable and cute and I thought she’d get at least ONE vote. I have a feeling that she is universally loved, but other characters outshine hers, hence why she isn’t on the board.
Nikolai Gogol - Ayy! I know what the fangirls like!
Ryunosuke Akutagawa - Dammit...
Atsushi Nakajima - I really undershot with these two... Despite them both being main characters, I didn’t think they were more iconic than other characters and what happened with Louisa Alcott I predicted would happen to these two instead. Thought wrong...
Kyouka Izumi - I FORGOT HOW MUCH OF AN ADORABLE SNOWFLAKE SHE IS. I didn’t see that fandom mention her much compared to other characters and undershot.
Kenji Miyazawa - I thought he would get more votes, but I feel like the lack of his mentioning in recent chapters paired with his lack of appearance played a large role. He’s acknowledged as the sunshine of the cast, but at the end of the day, is not really developed.
Lucy Maud Montgomery
Ougai Mori - You’ll see that I got the leader trio pretty well- apart from Mori. This one still honestly perplexes me...
Ichiyo Higuchi - She’s a badass! A cute badass!
Yukichi Fukuzawa
Junichirou Tanizaki - He had more fangirls than I expected...
Francis Fitzgerald
Nathaniel Hawthorne - He had less fangirls than I expected...
Gin Akutagawa - Looking back, I feel like I mixed up Higuchi and Gin’s ranking
Koyo Ozaki - She’s a queen. But again, same thing I feel like that happened with Alcott
Michizo Tachihara
Katai Tayama
John Steinbeck - More beloved than anticipated. But who can resist a guy in a suit?
Sigma - LOOK I MESSED UP! He deserves all the love in the world. (I feel like this was partly due to recent manga events tho)
Any Hunting Dogs member - Personal bias may have played a part... I honestly hate all of them apart from the strange loli girl and [redacted due to spoilers]
Ryoru Hirotsu - Ya gotta admit, the guy has style
Naomi Tanizaki - At this point, I expected no one to get any votes.
Mark Twain - I was surpised. Fuck boi has fangirls. (I should not be calling him a fuck boi in this case… please don’t attack meeee)
H.P. Lovecraft - Okay- I personally love him. And I’m glad so many other people love him too.
Elise
Margaret Mitchell
Herman Melvin
 Mushitarou Oguri
Kirako Haruno
Yumeno Kyusaku
Motojiro Kajii
Ivan Goncharov - Whaaat he has votes?
Alexander Pushkin
