Why The Wild Things Are: Cliff Notez’s Inconvenient Voice In the midst of this decade, with the BLM movement and all, artists are emerging and expressing their condolences towards American society today, as Devon R. Johnson states in his article “Hip-Hop Adulthood: Nihilism, Hip-Hop, and Black American Youth in the 21st Century” that “There is now a generation of hip-hop adults, whom are raising hip-hop children, young men and women poised and ready to challenge the moral and political legitimacy of the contemporary anti-black racist world.” One such artist is Cliff Notez, a Bostonian hip-hop artist whose works explore the intimate consequences of a society where black bodies are easily ignored, forgotten, or disregarded. When looking at it in a race lens, which considers issues of race, heritage, an ethnicity, Notez’s album Why the Wild Things Are is somewhat inconvenient because it expresses his sentiments about the marginalization of black people in American society; however, while his sentiments may speak for the black community as a whole, he does not necessarily voice the need for change directly or address some specific issues. The title of Notez’s album, Why the Wild Things Are, is “a parallel to the book ‘Where the Wild Things Are,’ which was banned by many parents and teachers in the 1960s due to its portrayal of anger and rebellion among children” according to Karen Muller, author of the article “Cliff Notez explores Duality, Race and Mental Health in New Album.” Sure enough, the album embodies the anger and indignance of black people towards their forgottenness in society and ignorance towards them by society, which is often viewed as taboo when expressed. That sentiment is evident in Notez’s song “Massochists,” when he says, “You could call me a sewer/ Maneuver through all the manure/ And I ain’t really here just to prove it/ I don’t want to be immortal/ I just wanna be normal.” It shows the discrimination and marginalization he faced being a black man, and he states that all he wants is to be treated and to live normally—nothing greater. Another one of Notez’s “wild things” would be his resentment towards society’s behavior. In another song, “Stevie’s Ribbon,” one of the lyrics is, “My homie just died and you talkin bout censorship.” This gives context to his emotions when his brother, whom he was very close to, passed away, basically showing that he was already in so much grief, yet there were political things going around him. In “Worth It,” Notez says, “So I wonder/ Why humans choose to dim their light/ To make others comfortable/ Why they choose to blend amongst clouds/ But they shine too bright for that.” He is questioning how people are concealing themselves just for the sake of others’ comfort, when they can be just as good as the others. This may relate to the subtle racism in today’s society, where people of color are often lacking in confidence due to, for instance, stereotypes. Another part of the lyrics is “I spend too much time tryna figure what I’m worth/ I’ma get what I deserve.” Here, Notez may be pointing out another side of that subtle systemic racism—where black people do not have as much privilege as white people, and he expresses his will to earn what he deserves as a person. In “Get Free I,” Notez says, “I was born two days from the fourth/ Hearts still torn from brushin with scorn,” and the chorus is comprised entirely of “I can’t wait until I get free.” The ‘fourth’ in the lyrics may be alluding to the Fourth of July, when America gained its independence. The lyrics suggests that, despite the country having gained its freedom, the black community is not entirely free; Notez states in the article by Victoria Wasylak, “Cliff Notez Interprets ‘Get Free Pt. 1’ Through the Lens of Today’s Movement,” that “I see a world where a Black man can still be lynched, I see a world where a Black man can take his own life. I’ve grown tired of that existence.” The repetitive chorus and breathing heard in the background emphasize Notez’s desire for that freedom—the freedom to live in his black body. Another song, “Happy,” has very bitter messages in it despite its title. One of the lyrics to the song is “I cry when no one’s looking/ On my block the pistols bang/ On my avenue man, that’s where murderers hang.” The lyrics show the pain of black people as they witness their neighbors getting shot unjustly, reflecting on the racially targeted police shootings. Notez raises another issue in the part, “Are we cursed? Overworked. Underpaid./ All these screams will go unheard/ Sold my soul out on the curb/ Reparations we deserve!” that many POC are undercompensated compared to their white colleagues. The article “Race, Class, Gender, and Rhymes: Hip-Hop as Critical Pedagogy” by Noah Karvelis states that “Many members of society, specifically African-American society, feel pressure to conform to and reproduce gendered, racialized stereotypes.” Notez has clearly defied this by thoroughly articulating his resentments towards the marginalization of his community. In the article “‘You Can Never Kill Me’: Racism and Resilience in Hip Hop,” author Cassandra Chaney states that “Hip Hop artists encourage resilience through resistance in the form of political activism, through acknowledging individual and collective worth and by envisioning (and working towards) racial harmony.” Notez’s music has indeed shown resilience and resistance in the form of his intricate rapping and resonating beats and messages. However, the messages shown in the songs above so far do not necessarily speak about the entire black community; what about women of color? Or black members of the LGBTQ+ community? He has only spoken about his sentiments as a black man. Through the album, Notez definitely sheds light into the discrimination and marginalization of blacks in today’s society and speaks for the black community as a whole. However, his expressions are more like personal perspectives rather than advocacies. Furthermore, there is little mention of other related prominent issues like gender inequality. Therefore, a six out of ten rating on the inconvenient scale would be appropriate overall. Since he is a very recent artist, however, there are hopes that his future works will voice out more advocacy.
