ok but i actually have sm to say about qi rong's relationship with anger. i could honestly just link a fic i wrote about it here bc i think i worded it better there than i ever can again but my ao3 links to my main twt and i prefer to keep rp stuff separate from my personal stuff for reasons sooooo lemme try to write it differently
cw for mentions of domestic violence bc holy shit like 99% of his character traces back to that in some way
the key thing is, of course, that anger is a trauma response for qi rong. he has every reason to be fucking pissed at like, all times, but fundamentally, his anger is not rational. rage and violence are all he knows! his earliest childhood memories are of being abused and seeing his mother be abused! even when he got out of that, he and his mother were bullied and ostracized, and his mother was eventually murdered. violence and cruelty shape his early childhood and in turn shape who he is today (enabled in large part by the queen's reluctance to properly discipline him when he began exhibiting cruel behavior himself).
in many cases, it's about revenge--getting "even", though he usually takes it much farther than the original offense. his father was abusive? he'll delight in warring against people from the same town as him. the yong'an rebellion tore away the one good thing he had in his life--his royal status? he'll crush their entire royal & noble classes in a single night. xie lian fell off the pedestal he held him on, "failed" and "abandoned" him? unforgivable.
very often, it's simply lashing out. the world has been cruel to him, so he'll be cruel too.
mostly, though, his anger just keeps him going. if he doesn't have his anger, then what does he have? sadness, loneliness, despair, heartbreak, misery.
being a ghost adds another angle to it, too--he can't let go of his anger, even if he wants to. well, he could, but then he'd disappear, and he doesn't want that. not yet. it's his source of life. it's also his source of power! and it's easy to forget with how often the rest of the cast and the narrative itself dunks on him, but he has a lot of power. #4 in the entire ghost realm! a near-supreme, one successful furnace trip away from becoming a full-fledged ghost king!
just--imagine, for a moment, being him. an abused kid--powerless--who suddenly learns that he's actually a prince--powerful!--and then, before even reaching adulthood, his kingdom crumbles, and he eventually dies just as powerless as he started. and then all that resentment causes him to come back even more powerful than before. it's no wonder he leans into it.
idk this is getting long-winded but i guess what i'm trying to say is--his anger is both justified and overblown, it is both understandable and irrational, it is something he needs to hold onto no matter how much it hurts him. he is his anger.

forever thinking about the scene where xl tells lqq to ignore qr because he's insane and lqq is like shut up let me hear him out btw. imagine having your own cousin, a person you used to worship, dismiss you out of hand as a madman and not worth listening to, while the only person in the room who shows you a modicum of respect is someone you hate on principle, someone who wants you dead, someone you want dead too. and then it keeps happening? lqq is the only character who treats qr as a legitimate threat in the entire series. idk i rotate this in my brain a lot

and uh.... no? obviously being cut in half with a sword hurts more than being slapped, objectively. this isn't a testament to xl's strength (though, don't get me wrong, he's plenty strong)--it's a testament to the fact that he never expected xl of all people to slap him. xl, his once-beloved cousin, someone who rarely lays a hand on anyone, one of the few people in the world who knows that qr is an abuse survivor.
a slap is not an extreme form of violence, but it is an incredibly raw one, and one with deep personal significance to qr. that is why he says it hurts more.

at the end of the day, all qi rong wants is to be looked at. ideally, with respect, awe, maybe even love. but those things aren't attainable for him, minus the miracle that is guzi. so he settles. people look at him with disgust or fear and it's not preferable but at least they're looking. anything is better than being ignored and abandoned.
you can see this reflected a lot in his behavior, which tends to be reminiscent of a troubled child acting out for attention (because that's basically exactly what's happening here). he provokes and aggravates people so he sticks in their minds. he screams and hollers and curses so people don't forget he's there. xie lian even outright says that giving a reaction, any reaction, will only encourage him, and the best way to deal with him is with a disaffected disinterest.

y'know, one thing i'm kinda of two minds on is qi rong's ultimate fate. (tgcf spoilers under the cut)
on one hand, him disappearing for good at the end actually fits pretty well, narratively. he'd just said everything he wanted to say to xie lian and, more importantly, proudly accepted guzi as his son; it's easy to see this scene as him finally letting go of the old hang-ups that had kept him around for so long. it's satisfying, in a bittersweet way.
on the other hand, if fics have taught me anything, it is that the tastiest character development for him happens when he's allowed to regain his strength and return post-canon. this is the qi rong that openly loves his son, the qi rong that has a shot at some sort of reconciliation with his cousin, the qi rong that might actually get to enjoy life for once.
both are good! both are fun to explore!

was thinking about like. constructing verses and i really think the most important part is making sure you identify the core of the character. you can change all kinds of things and still have a character be recognizably them as long as their chief personality traits and the themes of their character remain intact.
like, for example, with ritsuka, it's very important to me that in every verse, she's nobody special, she's just some rando who got thrown into a wild and dangerous situation through sheer happenstance. she's not powerful, either--her strength comes from her allies, and her role is to support them and bring out the best in them. that's why in genshin she doesn't have a vision, and as a valkyrie she ranks low.
owl's verses are all centered around obsessive loyalty and, in most cases, a desperate search for information to make sense of the world around him. as i've observed before, i often give him a relationship to ice motifs--not with him himself, but with the things around him, like making him a fatuus or plopping him in belobog--because his closeness to ana very much defines who he is as a character.
qi rong's verses are all about maladaptive tendencies, vengefulness and self-destructiveness. wen ning's are about being caught in the crossfire of something bigger than oneself. i could go on but like, you get it?

when r people gonna recognize that the queen completely failed qr by refusing to discipline him or be there for him emotionally and it's a significant part of why he is the way he is today
"she raised him!" no the fuck she didn't. she kept him fed, clothed, and with a roof over his head, she spoiled him with presents, but she did not teach him right from wrong, help him overcome his dependence on xl (if anything she encouraged it), give him someone safe to turn to when he was scared or upset, teach him healthy ways to vent his anger... all because she felt it "wasn't her place" since he wasn't her kid?? girl his mom died and his dad was a deadbeat, you took him in so it's up to you to parent him now!!

hi i have more qr posts to make
specifically about his relationship with xl because oh my godddd there's so much to unpack there. xl did fail qr 100% but at the same time, it's not his fault. they were both failed by the adults in their lives. xl never should've been in a position where he could fail qr in the first place. he's only two years older! he was only a kid himself, and a sheltered one at that, he wasn't prepared to be the sole emotional support for a highly traumatized kid! qr is well within his rights to resent xl for the way he treated him, but the blame doesn't really lie on xl regardless. and i think, on some level, qr knows that. but it's not like the king and queen are around anymore for him to lay the blame at their feet, and he has to direct his anger somewhere.
