The real secret behind P-51B/C/D Mustang range
The P-51 Mustang
Controlling the air proved key to controlling the ground. The long-range P-51 Mustang fighter was invaluable to the Allied victory, enabling resumption of strategic bombing after heavy losses suffered by unescorted bombers in 1943. Developed for export to Britain, models modified by the British to use Rolls-Royce Merlin engines became America’s most capable wartime fighters.
In fact, in December 1943 the first Merlin-engined P-51B/C Mustangs entered combat in Europe. These P-51s provided sorely needed long-range, high-altitude escort for the US bombing campaign against Germany.
The P-51D arrived in quantity in Europe in the spring of 1944, becoming the USAAF’s primary long range escort fighter.
Thanks to its ability to excel in long-range escort duty, the Mustang was the first single-engine plane based in Britain to penetrate Germany, first to reach Berlin and first to go with the heavy bombers over the Ploiesti oil fields in Romania.
How was the iconic Mustang able to perform such long-range escort missions? Not because of its drop tanks.
The secret behind P-51B/C/D Mustang range
‘Lots of planes could carry drop tanks: P-47, P-40, P-38, etc.,’ says James Gibson, former MP&P Engineer at Boeing, says on Quora.
‘The real secret to the Mustang’s range was not the laminar flow control wing, or the Merlin engine. It was the addition of a fuselage tank behind the cockpit halfway through production of the P-51B. This additional internal tank increased fuel capacity by 85 gallons: original P-51Bs only had 184 gallons in the wings. The addition increased total fuel to 269 gallons or some 30%. Further adding two 75 gal drop tanks you reached 419 gallons. The later D&H models carried 110 gal drop tanks for 489 gallons.
‘But when you carried so much fuel you had to be aware of which tanks you were using at which point in the flight. On take-off you used the rear fuselage tank. This tank effected the center of gravity of the plane. You didn’t want to tangle with a 109 or a Focke Wulf when carrying fuel in the rear tank. So you burned it first and then switched to the drop tanks about halfway to Berlin.’
Gibson concludes;
‘You would then burn off the drop tanks, hopefully before engaging enemy fighters. But if they struck early you could drop those tanks and thus be clean and maneuverable. This was the fight profile that allowed the Mustangs maximum range and best performance when over target.’

Thoughts on "Larry's Birthday"
First Thought: Who the fuck let an old lady own a puma?! How did this happen?! Just...what?!
And she owns an alligator too?!
And briefly owned a grizzly?!
Who is this woman?!
Second Thought: Wade should have told them it was a puma before they even went on that mission.
Kim might have had a battle suit to protect her, but Ron didn't, and should have been told ahead of time the kind of danger it really was so he could better prepare himself, even if it meant not going.
Third Thought: Since when does Kim have a Cuddle Buddy collection? I know it's been mentioned before, but her Pandaroo is the only one that's ever seen. I'd hardly call that a collection.
Not trying to be insulting, I'm saying it'd be nice to see Kim with other Cuddle Buddies. One Cuddle Buddy does not a collection make, so show us the other ones she has.
Fourth Thought: Ron needs to work on not telling other people about Kim's secrets. Not just about the battle suit, but her Cuddle Buddy collection was also meant to be a secret and he shouldn't have told Larry about that either.
Fifth Thought: Not really role model behavior from Kim here:
Says she and Larry don't share the same planet.
Runs out of the comic shop exclaiming "real world" as though spending time around geeks is physically harmful.
She apologizes for putting down Larry's interests at the end, but then makes a condescending comment about real life being cooler than science fiction.
(Kim's real life might be cooler than made-up scenarios, but the average person's real life isn't.)
Sixth Thought: Gotta agree with June here: a guy who willingly stands around during a fight, comments on how it's like a video game, ignores the suggestion to get to safety because "it's just getting good", and gets into a helicopter with strange people assuming it's a LARP for his birthday, is not someone who should be left alone.
Seventh Thought: Why is Larry's birthday party being thrown at Kim's house? Shouldn't it be thrown at Larry's house?
Kim's kind of condescending, but I feel bad that she has to either attend a party she, no doubt, doesn't want to go to, or spend the whole day out of her own house to avoid it.
Also, I feel bad for Kim, with her closet getting blown up. I know it probably gets fixed quickly, but I still feel bad for her.
Eighth Thought: Does June not have any pictures of Larry dressed in normal clothing to use for the posters? Is the wizard costume the only outfit he ever took a picture in?
Ninth Thought: Kim doesn't care about Ron or Hana. Okay, that's probably not true, but she should never have suggested that Ron bring his baby sister on a mission when he's supposed to be watching her.
(Would you be okay if your SO told you to bring your baby sister on a potentially life-threatening adventure?)
She called it "recon" and said it wouldn't be dangerous, but she was clearly expecting to run into Dementor and his henchman while doing it, and thus expecting a fight. And Ron would have had to protect himself and Hana while fighting. This is not the behavior of someone who cares about Ron or his loved ones.
(Especially when she will adamantly deny needing Ron on missions, so, if she had truly believed it wouldn't be dangerous, there was no reason to bring him along anyways. And if she had believed it would be dangerous, she should never have suggested bringing the baby.)
Also, it's not really fair of Kim to not believe Ron when he said he didn't blow up the lair. Ron is canonically a terrible liar, and he wouldn't lie in the first place. He'd own up to his mistake, like he's done every other time he accidentally destroyed something.
Final Thought: Regardless of Larry thinking the whole thing was a LARP, he was pretty badass at the end. He needs a reality check and his own battle suit. He would make great backup on a mission.
(Ron also needs his own battle suit, but that's a discussion for another time.)

“Mills’ Marauders’. This photo was taken minutes before these Royal Marines, commanded by Lt Keith Mills, went into action against Argentine forces invading South Georgia on 3rd April 1982, stage two of their invasion of The Falkland Islands and their dependencies. Despite the overwhelming odds Mills and his men damaged the corvette ARA Guerrico and brought down a Puma helicopter, inflicting significant casualties on the enemy, so much so that they were unable to occupy the rest of the island. To prevent further pointless casualties Mills ordered his men to lay down their arms having put up stiff resistance, at the cost of just one injury. Mills was awarded the DSC for he and his men’s actions that day and they were all treated as the heroes they were on their return to the UK. Less than a month later the island was back under British control and the war ended on 14th June.

Puma (Tarkov story character rundown)
Yes another wild cat named character because i am sooooo original. The second main character of the book i’m attempting to write. Whoooe this one is a bit heavier so heads up if you aren’t comfortable with themes of Ptsd.
“He is in his 40s, slightly smaller with a deep scar cutting across his left cheek, clad in traditional green khakis from the days of the Union. He carried a drab plate carrier which only covered a portion of his chest which was decorated a small silver pendant with a red star encompassing the hammer and sickle. In his hands was a Sv-98, its beautiful teal furniture contrasting the cold, black steel of its barrel. Much like his squad-mate there were noticeable markings on his instrument, however they span from muzzle to receiver, with even the hand guard being covered in tallies and the name “Puma” engraved on its side. Much like Lynx he felt drawn to the city after hearing about the escalating conflict within the urban districts.”
character traits and background
-He’s incredibly scared of the sound of helicopters and jets flying overhead from his experiences fighting in Soviet-Afghan war. Though he knew they were on his side the brutality and terror of the strikes still shook him to his core. He had only turned 19 before he was conscripted to fight so these experiences had been engrained in him.
-Unlike Lynx, He kept his equipment and rifle in especially good condition. Taking apart and thoroughly cleaning his Sv-98 after every engagement which comes from his experiences fighting in the mountains where small particles of dirt and rock would often end up caught in the internals of weapons. Old habits die hard
-He speaks and tries to keep constant communication with his squad as it’s his way of telling who is still breathing. Should someone go silent he’ll know that they’re either dead or dying. Though he may still speak more frequently than Lynx he still tends to keep things emotionless as in his eyes it is just a distraction.
-Even when there isn’t any sign of opposition he is still constantly scanning the area around him, his eyes never holding still for more than half a second a time. To be blunt he is constantly on edge and is paranoid that a target could appear from anywhere at anytime.
-He also tends to jitter a lot never being able to stay still as a result of the constant feeling of tension he had to endure then and now. Usually he twirls a spent casing in his hands as a way to keep himself calm. However, when he finds a target and takes aim he enters his zone where he is truly calm and collected. His mind and body takes focus, putting him at ease as he concentrated to make his shot count.
-His chest is clad in old medals and decorations from his time in Afghanistan. He was taken so young so really these are the only accomplishments he has in life so he desperately tries to cling on to this empty sense of pride despite the horrors of what he had to endure. He had convinced himself that his sacrifice was for a greater goal when in reality the war he was fighting was pointless and for nothing, these medals help him stop thinking about what he lost.
-Following up on that, he tends to use the same equipment he used back then nowadays. More so because that was what he was trained with but also he feels a strange sense of familiarity with these objects.
-He tends to be rough on the younger members of his squad but he’s only like this because he doesn’t want them to make the same mistakes he did in the past and end up hurt or worse. It’s just that he doesn’t know how to communicate this advice well as he was treated the same by his elders back then as well.
-Lastly, he personified his rifle as it has been with him for years at this point. He is very gentle with it making sure to take great care of it as he is very sentimental of all the things the two have gone through. It’s also partly because it is the only thing he can truly trust here. It won’t let him down as others had and he knows that it dies with him so he doesn’t have to feel any guilt leaving it behind should he be killed
that’s pretty much it for Puma. Thanks for reading up to this point :D have a good one!
