The Universal Translator broke completely on Prodigy. Why is this such a rare thing in almost 60 years of television and film?

IMO Star Trek’s Prodigy and Lower Decks have the most excellent, engaging, and consistently entertaining writing of all of the modern Trek shows, and I’m quite glad given I think animation is a wonderful direction for Trek to go!

*(While still maintaining its fun romps and one-off adventures)
The best episode of star trek I have ever seen:

(Galaxy Quest fans, you are hereby summoned to turn on Prodigy S1E13)
She's got a caffeine addiction so strong it's a part of her base coding:

The animation is so pretty and the lighting is stellar. If you have ever complained about new trek being dimly lit you owe it to yourself to watch this show immediately

Star Trek Prodigy is the best of newer Trek and one of the best Trek series.
It is everything that 90s trek embodied, and everything that new trek has tried to achieve with Picard, DISCO and SNW but failed.
It's absolutely gorgeous, 20 episodes, Emmy nominated for a reason, has a compelling storyline, great show for the whole family to enjoy, and it also has one of the most memorable character deaths in all of Star Trek.
I cannot say this enough. Go watch Prodigy!

For those wondering, Netflix is far and away the best home for Star Trek: Prodigy.
Netflix has the largest market share, about 4 times as large as some others. It also has a global reach that can bring in new audiences.
Historically, Star Trek has done extraordinarily well on Netflix — in fact, outside of America, it remains the home of Star Trek in many territories.
Netflix has a great track record for YA action adventure animated shows — arguably more than any other streamer. Just look at the longevity and success of shows like Dragon Prince (7 seasons), Tales of Arcadia (7 seasons and a movie), or the Renaissance for Avatar the Last Airbender which has led to the creation of Avatar Studios.
Their current focus is animated content with a built-in audience produced by partner studios. That’s us. Netflix has licensed our show with the option for more — just like any other show.
So go fast. Spread the word to watch the series as soon as it drops on Netflix. Let’s see what’s out there.

Ok so I finally watched Prodigy ! And it was surprisingly good. This is obviously a kids' show but I ended up being pretty invested in the story. The main character started as Ezra Bridger-ass annoying but he's grown on me. Genuinely I think this might be the best new trek show with Lower Decks lmao. It even got me caring about what happens to CHAKOTAY of all things !
Also it had GREAT alien rep omfg there were so few humans I LOVE THIS SHIT !!! especially UFP founding members rep ahhhhh !!!!!!!!!! I've been wanting this for YEARS they did it for me

Finally finished watching the second half of Prodigy. I LOVE it. By far, my favourite episode was one of anti-nostalgia, but every minute was enjoyable, fun and clever.
You can tell the writers care about Star Trek, and care about making this show watchable regardless of age. They understand Janeway so well. Kate Mulgrew does a great job of keeping Admiral Janeway and Hologram Janeway two separate characters. Admiral Janeway is still the reckless Captain we all love so much, whilst still seeing her develop and grow with age. And they do this without leaning constantly on nostalgia.
The kids were all interesting in their own ways. I didn't think I'd like them, but came to adore them all. They made some interesting choices with the kids- and allowed them to grow and adapt and develop, which is, quite frankly, more than most Trek characters get.
They're also not afraid to change up the format and take big risks. Season 1 ends with a very big change to the format, and I cannot wait to see where they go with it.
This is, absolutely, the best Star Trek you're not watching. If you've avoided it because it's a kid show, don't. If you've avoided it because Picard left you feeling sour, I found this the opposite of that. If you've avoided it because you just haven't got around to it, move to to the top of the queue.
This is the only New Trek I have enjoyed. Unlike Picard, they manage to reference previous Trek characters like Chakotay, Okana and Jellicoe without disrespecting the source material, or the new show they're in. And, unlike Picard, the women (or girls, holograms and women) have something to do.

it's something else to watch people write posts about how star trek needs to be doing more shows with original casts and leave tos and tng alone already and then in the tags they clarify that they like lwd and that's it and it's like
i'm on my knees
watch prodigy. you want a new star trek epic? watch prodigy! new cast! new species and worldbuilding! arcs centered entirely on the new characters! sometimes there are legacy characters but they are there specifically to give the new characters agency! actually new interesting ideas and concepts about where the star trek world could go beyond rehashing old villains and better made commentary on society! watch prodigy! i promise you you're not gonna die because the writing is also meant to accommodate children, it's an actually good star trek, probably the best since ds9!

Listen to me. Shows aimed at kids will always have a lower bar than ones aimed at adults and especially ones aimed at adults who are already invested in the franchise. Prodigy didn't have to be as good as any other modern trek show. And yet, it's better. I do still love LD more but Prodigy is objectively the best new trek show. It's miles above the bar it had to reach while others (definitely Pic, arguably SNW) fail to reach even the bar set for Prodigy, let alone their own bars. Prodigy is a very good show, it both values its predecessors and looks into the future, it treats both existing and new characters fairly, it's the one new trek that truly doesn't shy away from worldbuilding, it preserves the spirit of star trek and even if none of this were true, it's the only show with the intention of bringing in new fans. It truly is the legacy series. Plus it is simply enjoyable to watch.
Watch Prodigy.

Star Trek the original series: blessed, the mother of fandom, better and worse than you remembered
The Animated Series: what?
The Next Generation: iconic, set up much of what people think of as quintessentially Star Trek, better than my childhood memories.
Deep Space 9: most interesting premise and characters I didn't appreciate till my mid twenties. Excellent use of war criminals.
Voyager: has permanent custody of my single brain cell. Everything I love is because it's perfect. Everything I hate is Rick Berman's fault.
Enterprise: the Enterprise in my head is not the Enterprise that plays on the television.
Discovery: the best live action NuTrek, fight me. I would die for Michael Burnham. TARDIGRADES
The Orville: TNG's bastard lovechild, more Trek than Trek.
Picard: fanfiction I don't like.
Lower Decks: So good I can only assume CBS forgot about it. Please please please keep letting them do their thing.
Prodigy: CBS's redheaded stepchild whom I have adopted.
Strange New Worlds: fanfiction I do like.

Some good news for fans of Star Trek: Prodigy. After being cancelled following its excellent first season, and despite most if not all of its second season actually being completed, Netflix has "white knighted" Prodigy, agreeing to stream season 2 (except in Canada and some other places; at least in Canada Prodigy along with Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds, Picard and Discovery, air on the CTV Sci Fi cable network). I hope this doesn't mean that Prodigy will no longer get a DVD/Blu-ray release (the first season is out in that format). But still, it's good to see Prodigy - considered by some to be the best of the modern Trek series, despite being aimed at younger audiences - get a chance to finish its story. And if it does well, Netflix has the resources to bankroll future seasons.
This also bodes well for fans of Lower Decks, given its creator has publicly stated it could be cancelled after its currently airing fourth season.
