The #Porsche356C was the very last of the line, introduced just as the 911 was coming on line. It hued close to the 356 formula, as you’d expect from a car about to be replaced, but the evolution of the recipe made the C very capable and popular. - The original 356 created a sports car around off-the-shelf pieces of the #Volkswagen and much has been written about the connections with VW, but the #Porsche was not a Beetle in a party dress like the later Karmann-Ghia. The body and chassis were new and most of the early VW parts were gradually eliminated - by 1963, virtually everything VW about it was gone. The original aluminum shell of the 1948 Gmünd cars gave way to steel bodies at Reutter coachworks early on, and bigger and more powerful engines made up for weight increases. Erwin Komenda’s basic shape lasted through the end of production in April, 1965, by the time of the #356B, launched in late 1959, many of the details had changed considerably. - The 356 may have had a hard time shedding its VW roots because there’s something vaguely VW about it when you’re in one - it sounds and feels similar, it’s just faster and more reactive. The basic 356s were not exotics like 300SLs or Ferraris, but they were also much more expensive (and capable) than MGs and Triumphs. Like later products from Lotus they were back-road killers. The 356B continued in production until July of 1963, getting updates to its shell in late 1961 (T6) and a 130-hp Carrera 2 in ’62. By then the 911 was almost ready - but it was a 6-cyl car and appreciably more costly. Demand for the 356 was still strong, so Porsche upgraded the T6 356B into the 356C that summer. - The 356 brought certain elements of modernity - 12V electrics and disc brakes all around being the most obvious changes - and it dropped the lowest-spec 356B engine, leaving a 75-hp base model, the 90-hp SC, and the 130-hp Carrera. Porsche bought out Reutter and Karmann took over building the bodies. With these upgrades and a slightly new interior, the 356C proved very popular: ~16,680 were made, 1/5th of 356 production.
