Crushed. 💔 Today we did Pops’ biopsy, and when Doc got in there he learned that the tumor was wrapped all around the muscles…and it’s big. He sent a sample to the lab, but he also looked at it under the scope. He said the cells were unfamiliar, maybe lymphoma?? (but not a likely place), but that they were angry. We don’t love angry cells. The lab will tell us exactly what kind they are, but the end result will most likely be what we’ve dreaded. We’ll keep you up to date. Our sweet, perfect Pops…. He’s still happy and silly for now, thankfully, and will obviously become a sanctuary member. Pops’ lab results came back today with what we feared. The tumor was so abnormal that they weren’t sure exactly what it was, but they know it’s malignant that it’s spreading rapidly. The way Doc put it was that it’s the crazy ones like his that are typically the most aggressive. Most likely it’s nerve related, bc at this point he’s knuckling his foot and doesn’t know it. Amputation would be too difficult on him, due to his body type and age, so at this point we’ll keep him happy and comfortable until we no longer can. Currently he’s still himself, still loves his food and in good spirits, so we’ll pray that it continues on for a while. I dread the day, really dread the day, but I will cherish the moments until then. Pops says “Great. Now we have to see if my thyroid is lazy.” *sigh. You can see how happy he is about it. But at our visit Doc felt it was best to check his thyroid since his skin is so fussy. He’s doing better, but not at 100%, so we’ll finish the current meds, see what the thyroid results say and go from there. The dermatologist may be the next step. Meanwhile, Pops has a super attitude, despite his expression. He just goes with the flow and acts as if nothing is wrong, back dancing, sniffing, handing out kisses and sleeping. Giving Tuesday will be here in a couple of days and your donation helps us make sure we properly treat the dogs when they have problems like Pops’ skin, or new intake dogs who are in pain or sick, and the dogs in our care who depend on us for monthly preventions, food and daily medications. VET DAY!! Yesterday Pops went to see Doc bc of an upset belly and repeated vomiting. As a potential side effect of the medication for his skin, it could have been GI or liver related. Since it’s important to monitor his liver values on this med, Doc felt it best to check his liver enzymes. They were perfect! I was so excited bc I feared the worst, esp with his age. WHEW!!! So thankfully it’s only an upset belly, and we’ll continue with anti-nausea meds and probiotics. It’s definitely helping him, as he’s not projectile vomiting any longer. We’ll continue meds and recheck in a couple of weeks. Doc also added a 2nd topical rinse that we’ll use in between medicated baths. His skin is improving but still needs help, as you can see in his photo. Pops is all good, though. He has a Pyrenees pillow (thank you, Mr Fitzgerald). Vet Day!! Pops and Louie both had to see Doc today. Pops is having some difficulty with his skin not healing properly after his allergies decided to act up. Since he’s already gone through meds and medicated baths, Doc felt we needed to culture the skin to make sure a change of meds wasn’t in order. So off the sample goes to the lab, *whoosh!* and we’ll find out the best next step. Louie, on the other hand, had to see Doc b/c he’s a GOOBER. He is such a goofy pup who’s unable to play bc of the surgery (neuter), so he’s silliness, antics and wiggles opened his incision a bit. 🤦‍♀️ He’s currently at the vet and Doc will close it up so it heals properly. I told Louie to settle down or this would happen, but kids just don’t listen these days, ya know? He’s all, “I’m FINE, foster mom…geez,” and rolls his eyes. VET DAY! Pops seemed to be a little off today, so off to the doc we went! Exam had a good outlook with his heart and lungs sounding normal, and belly not tender (a mass is always a first check with the old guys), but bloodwork showed he was ever so slightly anemic and that it’s been slowly coming on. So, we’re going to do some basic steps in treatment and recheck him in a couple of weeks. He was such a good boy. Sweet Pops is such an angel with his soft, kind, gentle heart. He’s bullheaded as the day is long, obsessed with Libby (I mean, she IS a babe…), and howls when you’re ignoring him, but he is an utter, completely delightful gem. Lordy we love this dog! So make sure to say a prayer things will be a-ok.
