EDC…The Tale of 2 Very Different Pistols
When it comes to a concealed carry pistol, if you ask 50 different people what their favorite concealed carry pistol is, you’ll most likely get close to 50 different answers. Everybody has they favorite pistol. But what about a person who has a number of different favorites? How does a person decide which of their pistols are their favorite to carry? We’ll take a deep dive into 2 very different carry pistols in my collection.
Tumblr media
Retro. The oldest style pistol that is in my concealed carry rotation is drastically different from what the majority of people these days prefer for their concealed carry. The pistol in question is a Kimber CDP Ultra 1911 in .45 ACP. I purchased this pistol some 10 years ago specifically as a concealed carry pistol. At the time I was shooting a ton of .45ACP through my full sized 1911 pistols and wanted one specially for carry. The Kimber CDP Ultra is an aluminum framed 3” barrel 1911 with a slightly shorter grip length than a standard 1911. The aluminum frame provides a good bit of weight saving as does the shorter slide and barrel. The barrel is a bushing less design, unlike a standard 1911. Since the CDP series is meant specifically for concealed carry, the slide has melted edges that are less sharp than normal 1911 pistols. It also came with Meprolight 3 dot tritium night sights. This is a classic pistol meant for concealment. The only changes I made was adding a set of VZ grips and a mainspring housing/magwell combo from Evolution Gun Works. I carry and train with this pistol in the cocked and locked position as a 1911 has both a grip safety as well as a thumb safety. I never recommend carrying any pistol without training to properly conceal and present that particular weapon system.
Tumblr media
Modern. The most modern style pistol that is in my concealed carry rotation is probably more typical of is a pistol that I put together myself. It is a Glock style striker fired pistol. The frame is a serialized Brownells exclusive Polymer80 frame, with a windowed Brownells slide and Grey Ghost Precision barrel in 9MM. Essentially it is a Glock 19, but with a much better grip angle than an OEM Glock. The trigger setup I used for this build also came from Brownells. It is the Apex Action enhancement kit, complete with a flat faced trigger, trigger bar, disconnector and safety plunger. The sights are Night Fision night sights which are some of my all time favorite night sights. I find this pistol to be somewhat easier to carry effectively since it is a striker fired pistol with no external safety. Again, making sure to train and dry fire when switching weapon platforms is essential to not having an issue when you need to defend yourself.
Tumblr media
So which of these 2 pistols, if given no other choice would be your preference for concealed carry? My guess would be that most people would gravitate towards the more modern design of the Glock-style pistol because most younger folk are more familiar with that style pistol than that of a 1911. There are some outliers of course. I even find myself carrying the Glock style pistol way more frequently than my 1911 for simplicity’s sake. But if I want to make a statement and be classy, that sweet Kimber CDP Ultra makes all the difference.

Let's talk about Polymer80 pistol frames.
The Polymer80 or the 80% realm of the gun industry has come under attack recently by the current US Government for a couple reasons. One, they don't like that you can build it yourself (which is legal under the constitution) and two they don't have to have a serial number when sold (because under legal definition they're not a firearm).
However this interests a lot of people that like to do bug out, s.h.t.f., or doomsday style events as they usually see it as an untraceable back up option for a firearm. While these frames are mostly untraceable they are not completely untraceable because most people have to order online and use a credit / debit card.
However there's also another group of people which I've found is the main buyer of pistol frames like these. Those people are those who like tinkering, building, understanding, and learning how to problem solve. These people like me get gratification from envisioning a build, shopping for all the parts, building, fitting, and completing a working item. One could relate it to those who custom build / restore cars, motorcycles, or houses that are unusable and turning them into something usable.
I never was a fan of Glock pistols as they just didn't look appealing to me. I even had a gen 2 Glock 17 that was a police trade in that I completely had refinished. I ended up selling it a short while later. A couple years later the first polymer 80% pistol frames came out (I can't remember the original name of the company). I ended buying an ODG Glocl 17 size frame and started playing with it. The "milling" part of it I found extremely satisfying and even trimmed down the enormous beaver tail it had. At the time the aftermarket parts scene wasn't there for these Glock style pistols so I traded the frame off.
Fast forward a handful of years later Polymer80 was making waves with their frames and it seemed like the aftermarket parts industry had grown tremendously so I decided yet again to snag a frame. I ended up getting a Brownells exclusive PF940C (Glock 19) in Flat Dark Earth (FDE). These new frames where way easier and so much nicer in quality. After milling that frame out I was officially hooked. I bought a few other frames in different colors and hooked up with local people who were building Polymer80 pistol frames too so we could drool over the subject.
We all shared a love for the process more than the finished item. The fact you could say "I built this and it works great" was an amazing concept. It wasn't that "they're untraceable" that drove us to build them. The second statement is just a byproduct of us exercising our second amendment rights. So while we all have and had fun building these frames it's sad that our government is trying to take them away because they simply don't like them.
So if you can get one then do it. It'll be a fun project that you won't regret.
As always, prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery!

A man has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting dead a transgender woman who made him feel “suspicious” in the middle of receiving oral sex.
Damarean Kaylon Bible, 25, from Minneapolis was charged with second-degree murder after the deadly incident near Lake Street in the early hours of November 29. After initially denying shooting Savannah Ryan Williams, 38, he allegedly later confessed to the crime after investigators showed him surveillance footage they had gathered.
Bible reportedly met Williams in a bus shelter, who asked him if he was interested in sex, according to KSTP-TV. After accepting the offer, he claimed that he felt suspicious in the middle of receiving oral sex, and after the act was finished, his wariness lingered, court documents reveal.

Subsequently, he shot the woman in the head just “inches away” after claiming he “had to do it”. Investigators found gunshot residue in the hood of Williams’ sweatshirt. It is currently unknown why Bible felt so suspicious during the sex act.
Witnesses told cops that they heard gunshots ring from 3023 4th Avenue South at approximately 5.45am, court documents revealed. A man was spotted leaving the scene, witnesses claimed.
Bible’s identity was confirmed by apartment management after police reportedly provided a photograph of the individual.
The man was arrested, and during a phone call with his father, he allegedly admitted that he “just murdered someone”, according to cops. He reportedly added that he “knew he wasn't God, but he had to do it”.
After attaining a search warrant for Bible’s apartment, authorities found a 9mm Polymer80 handgun with no serial number, along with a .22 calibre rifle.
Bible is scheduled to make his first court appearance this afternoon (December 6) and faces up to 40 years in prison.

Adventures in EDC…Part 1 Firearm
EDC or every day carry is truly a personal decision. From what kind of firearm to carry to what type of sharpy thing as well. There are many, many schools of thought as to what is necessary to carry each and every day and also how to carry those items to help get you through your day safely. My thoughts have always been on the minimalist approach when it comes to my daily battle gear, but I alter it as needed to address the activities of the day. So while some may do things differently than I, I’m going to discuss my approach in hopes of creating some thoughtful discussion around EDC gear. This will be a multi-part blog post broken into the different categories of EDC gear.
Tumblr media
When someone asks about what they EDC, the first item that comes to mind is what type of firearm do they EDC. My EDC firearm rotation includes a number of different pistols and pistol platforms. One thing that I will mention is that no matter what your firearm of choice is for EDC, ensure that it is functioning properly with your chosen ammunition and make sure you practice with it as much as possible. The pistol that I EDC the majority of the time is a Polymer80 compact build. It consists of a serialized Brownells exclusive P80 frame, Brownells slide with a barrel from Grey Ghost Precision, Night Fision sights and an Apex Tactical action enhancement trigger package. This setup just fits my hand and abilities perfectly. Nothing too flashy, just a nice pistol build that functions great. I carry this in an appendix holster from Hidden Hybrid. The second most used EDC firearm in my rotation is a Glock 19X, as built with a Streamlight TLR-1HL in a Bravo Concealment appendix holster. The least 2 carried firearms in my rotation is a Kahr PM9 which I tend to carry when I’m boating or out on the beach due to its compact size and a Kimber CDP Ultra .45. The Kimber is always carried in a custom OWB leather holster and only on special occasions.
Tumblr media
The only one of my EDC pistols that has an external safety is my Kimber CDP Ultra 1911. There are many who debate whether or not you want an external safety on an EDC pistol or not. So here are my thoughts…if you have a safety, train with it. If you don’t have a safety, train with it. At the end of the day, train with what you’re comfortable carrying! I much prefer to NOT have any sort of external safety to have to deal with if I have to draw my weapon in a self defense situation. My finger is my safety. But I totally understand those that choose to purchase a firearm that has an external safety. Many popular firearm manufacturers today offer models that are available with or without an external safety such as Smith & Wesson and Sig.
Tumblr media
When choosing a firearm for your EDC, it may take a few tries to finds that Goldilocks firearm for you! I’ve been carrying a firearm for 15 years or so now and have transitioned my EDC firearm numerous times as I’ve found better solutions. Don’t let anyone say that you need X firearm for concealed carry. As I mentioned above, I carry everything from an ultra compact pistol (Kahr PM9) up to a full sized (Glock 19X). Good luck with whatever you choose to carry, but train with it and train often.

So-called ghost guns are touted as a significant threat to peace and prosperity in many of our cities. The numbers we’ve been able to find don’t actually support that, but I’ll acknowledge that the numbers do seem to be increasing.
That’s likely in part because the media keeps talking about these firearms, thus creating marketing for criminals to figure out there’s an opportunity there.
Regardless, many people take the threat seriously and many states and communities have restricted the sale of “ghost gun” kits and parts.
Los Angeles, for example, has such a ban and they sued Polymer80, which supplies many such kits, for violating the city’s law.
That lawsuit has now been settled.
Los Angeles City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto announced a $5 million settlement Tuesday in a lawsuit against Nevada-based Polymer80, permanently prohibiting the company from selling its “ghost gun” kits in the state without first conducting background checks of buyers and serializing its products.
As part of the settlement, the company must pay $4 million in civil penalties, and its two founders must pay an additional $1 million in civil penalties.
“This settlement holds Polymer80 and its founders accountable, keeps guns out of the hands of prohibited people, makes L.A. neighborhoods safer and will help law enforcement to their jobs,” Feldstein Soto said in a statement.
“More than 16,000 people have been killed by gun violence so far in 2023. This is an important step toward preventing unnecessary deaths, especially as Congress repeatedly fails to take action.”
Except let’s be real here, few of those 16,000 people were killed with “ghost guns.”
When we hear numbers of unserialized, homemade firearms, they’re a tiny fraction of the weapons recovered. Moreover, most of those recovered weren’t used in homicides.
When Illinois was set to pass its own “ghost gun” ban, we learned just how few people have been killed with such weapons. Now, that was a year ago, but in six years, we had a total of 325 homicides nationwide that were carried out with so-called ghost guns. While I’m sure that number has since increased
I’m sorry, but they’re not the threat.
Further, let’s also acknowledge the strong possibility that Polymer80 simply settled this lawsuit because they’ve got more going on and it was cheaper in the long run to pay out than to continue fighting. They have other battles going on, after all, and legal fights are expensive.
