When Pollie stepped off the train, the sun glowed golden behind the Appalachian Mountains. She’d left Winters back east at Fort Indiantown Gap, before the train had made it across the Susquehanna. They’d parted with a handshake and a look of respect. No friendship - Pollie doubted they’d ever manage that. But she had his respect, and she’d worked damn hard to earn it.

The red, white, and blue banners that hung between the buildings were fluttering in the breeze. People flitted back and forth below them, all of them rushing somewhere or other. Only Pollie stood still, silent and watchful.

allow me to introduce pollie kleinfelter, the star of my upcoming fic from the shadows! pollie went from being a sniper in the 82nd airborne for most of the war to being easy’s first sergeant starting in hagenau. she was born in western pennsylvania, and she grew up on a farm. she’s slow to warm up to new people, but very observant and aware of her surroundings. she believes in offering help to others but being to prideful to accept it herself, and she believes in the importance of family and tradition. she’s a hard worker who’ll do what needs to be done in order to keep people safe.

I think you and I may have already talked about this, JJ, but I have strong feelings about Pollie and Doris. Doris is a big believer in family, though I think she might consider herself maybe a little warmer than it sounds like Pollie is. Doris is an older sister herself and that comes with a lot of observational skills - especially when it comes to people who are maybe a little too hard on themselves, which is something she knows a lot about.

Pollie gasped in a breath as her eyes shot open. She’d bolted up to a sitting position with the blankets tangled about her waist, trying to calm herself. Pulling her jacket and shirt away from her torso, Pollie looked down at the series of scars that wound their way across her body just below her rib cage, and the smaller lone scar just below her collarbone. Two different sets of wounds, two different campaigns, two different scars. With a deep sigh, Pollie clutched the blankets to her chest and rolled over onto her side. She didn’t want to reminisce on old wounds any longer. All she wanted was a restful night, just this once. The phantom called Kleinfelter stepped forward so that the light from his desk lamp slanted across her face. Her eyes seemed to pierce the paper as she stared at it. Then she looked up, and he saw her.

Sure, he’d seen her before. The 82nd Airborne patch that had been on her shoulder, the Springfield Sniper Rifle she carried, and the painted panther curled across the side of her helmet. But now, here, in the dark of his makeshift office, he truly saw her.

Pollie needed to adjust to the change in lighting. The hall in which she found herself was dark and mildly warm compared to the outside, and she could hear voices coming from what must have been the parlor. Stepping forward, she peered through the doorway. A brown-haired sergeant stood behind a table laden with supply boxes, yelling at the men before him asking for cigarettes and chocolates. Another, smaller man, stood further behind writing things down on a clipboard. Another man sat on a sofa, with a blanket strewn across him. He looked ill and was talking to a taller man with captain’s bars pinned to his collar.
