Remember how ReCoded just casually drops the fact that this is a “true memory” from the heart of Destiny Islands even though we literally see Riku get swallowed up by darkness in KH1, we watch it happen with Sora before the islands get totally wrecked like this, so how could Riku also leave through this portal afterwards

#what the fuck is even happening at the start of kh1 ???#you know what else is weird? the door in front of the secret place that looks like the door from the pink heart station #when the memory of sora running in there is shown in ddd the door is not there #also the fact that riku says the door is open but when sora runs into the secret place it’s still closed #and then it bursts open and kairi’s heart goes inside him - her body’s already gone -#sora’s blown back out onto the beach and suddenly everything’s fucked up outside #it’s just a little piece of the island left you can’t even see where the secret place used to be #so i mean . ? was some of that a dream ?? was he asleep before he got knocked onto the beach ??#if riku wasn’t physically gone at that point then where was he lmao ???#or is this like a different riku? is this a time travel thing or memories from a reset or ??#wtf is going on

Since, if the trend continues and it should, Kingdom Hearts IV should end with Sora and Kairi's hands joining again, here's my idea for the ending of the game:

We close on the two of them holding hands, of course, but it's Kairi pulling Sora back into the Realm of Light.

This also keeps Sora from, technically, ending up back in the Realm of Light in KHIV (like early on, I mean), as most don't want that (including myself. It would be far too easy). So, technically, he would be back there at the start of KHV.

When Villains have a point in KH: Hades has a point about Darkness

Riku's Darkness isn't all bad

In the series some of the games show that darkness is bad and it is all bad, such as the mobile games. Then there is KH1, showing darkness is bad and shouldn't ever be used.

BBS is also like that as well and Hades makes a good point.

Hades states:

"Darkness is inside... Everybody....

You play nice with it, and darkness will be your best friend.

But if you refuse.... to face it, the darkness will run over you..."

Terra has a similar arc to Riku since the BBS trio parallels the Destiny Trio.

Their names are even similar:

Kairi Sea » Aqua Water

Riku Land » Terra Earth

Sora Sky » Ventus Wind

What I like about Riku's character is that it shows not everyone is black and white. You can still have aspects of grey and use it for a good reason or purpose.

Riku learned to not be overtaken by the darkness but use it in a good way.

Hades legit just summarized what Riku dealt with in COM

And one of the reasons I like Riku's character so much is because it shows in between. First he learns from his mistakes, goes to his lowest point and feels shame. Then he deals with overcoming the darkness and learning it's not all bad while facing, his insecurities, along with Sora for what he has done.

Even Mickey said before Riku he thought darkness was bad but now he thought otherwise.

Anyways, I just thought it was kind of interesting

Spoilers for KH2 and 3:

I JUST BEAT KH2. And oh my GOSH Sora and Riku absolutely KICKING trash, riding some hover bike through space together and cutting buildings in half 😱 I was fangirling hard (I was screaming, lol)

Also, I’m dying. I knew what would happen at the end with the door to light and Sora turning into Roxas for a sec and Kairi into Naminé— but holy cow it’s totally different to see it in motion and not just read about it online or through the manga/novels. (Also everyone looked GOOD in those end scenes. Especially Roxas 🥹) I loved the way the way Sanctuary got all soft with Sora and Kairi’s interaction. 😭😭 And then how he kept the lucky charm ❤️ I shed a tear.

Okay okay, but when Sora and Riku are looking out at the waves together, and Riku’s like: “nothing’s changed, huh?” And Sora responds with “Nope. Nothing will.”

BECAUSE I PLAYED KH3 FIRST I JUST BROKE DOWN LIKE— Sora, you have no idea what’s gonna happen to you, you have no idea how much things are gonna change 😭😭😭 and the fact that he’s standing at the same place he’s going to fade at in 3.

Ughhhh, best KH ending ever. It’s a masterpiece.

Just a fragment of my thoughts but yeah— go play KH2 if you haven’t already (and if you have go replay it now!)

Something that I appreciate about SoKai above all else is that for all of their romantic moments, all the sparks between them - at the bottom of it all, they are friends. Really good ones at that. Their romance feels more like an add-on to that (at least to me), instead of a forced relationship that only happens because they have different genders.

And it is that base in a good friendship that makes me believe that those two might actually live happily ever after (that is, if Nomura lets them) and grow old together rather than separate after the story ends. Longterm romance, in my opinion, is always rooted in good friendship, both in fiction and in real life.

me proving the station of awakening + Sora waking up on the beach parallels the Destiny Islands falling + Sora waking up in Traverse Town for literally no reason

Hey crazy thought but maybe Kairi wouldn’t seem like such a ‘wasted character’ if this fandom would quit taking everything of narrative and thematic significance about her and assigning it to Riku constantly all the time.

(The evaluation of the ways in which Kairi and Riku are important and vital foils for each other got kind of long so it’s under a read more; to be clear, I love Riku so much, and it makes me super mad to see his narrative also being undermined by this trend, this is not a hate post.)

Kairi and Riku serve opposing but complementary purposes in the narrative. Kairi represents light, but she also represents the stagnation of the light. Many characters who are associated with just light are also associated with stagnation and a resistance to change. Hoder and Eraqus are particularly extreme examples, but Aqua exemplifies this as well. They want a predictable world where things stay as they ‘should’ be and they are threatened by changes to the status quo. Eraqus in particular refuses to change anything about himself for 60 years, only taking on students at the last minute because he’s running out of time. Kairi, like Eraqus and Hoder and Aqua, stands as the bold, sharp light that casts others into shadow.

However, the other side of “resistance to change” means that Kairi represents restoration. She is able to restore Sora in KH1, pull them home in KH2, and hold Sora back from death itself in KH3, because her power is one of restoration. She holds so tightly to their old way of being that she can stop death itself in the interest of not changing too drastically. But she is unable to move forward on her own, because she fears change too much. She wants to chase after the boys when they keep leaving her behind…but she isn’t able to keep up, because what she actually wants is for them not to run at all.

She wants to go home, and restore their previous status quo. This desire is consistent in her for the entire series; this is also why she is unable to let go of her childhood crush for Sora, even though he’s obviously not the person she wants him to be anymore. For Sora, Kairi is the rock, she is the home that will always be there, he feels that she is the secure dock he can always return to after the storm. He relies on her not changing, which reinforces her fear of change. Lea is similar, and they can bond in KH3 over both their mutual desires to restore a prior, idealized status quo where their friends were reliably there and not at risk of disappearing on them or running away from them or changing.

Riku on the other hand embodies transformation. He represents change to the status quo, growth and development and a new way to be. Too much change is as much of a problem as too little; Kairi in KH1 sees Riku wants change, and it scares her, and he does in fact go too far. At the same time, she’s the catalyst for Riku’s desire to change their circumstances. Kairi’s arrival at the islands in the meteor shower incites Riku to dream of going to the outside world. This too is a tension that creates an anxiety in Kairi - in a way, she can see herself as to blame for Riku’s desire to change. But Riku was always going to change, because that’s who he is. He is radical change, the change that cuts away restrictive dogma so that the world can advance. Riku drives Sora to also want to grow and change, to excel and challenge himself. Sora wants to be like Riku, whose strength and internal drive he admires.

Ultimately Kairi and Riku are in BALANCE with each other. Ironically, while Kairi is themed as ‘the sea,’ her narrative purpose is to be steady as the earth. Riku’s name is ‘the earth,’ but he is changing and dangerous as the sea. They are one another’s reflections in the narrative. Kairi’s arc is about learning to let go and move forward, even though it scares her. Riku’s entire arc is about finding balance, not throwing away the comfort of the past, that inoculates him from falling too far the way Baldr and Xehanort do. Riku can drive Kairi to join them by giving her a Keyblade too. Kairi can pull Riku back from fleeing from them by seeing him even under Ansem’s face. He is able to be in contrast with Kairi in a healthy way, in a way that honors her fears while also refusing stagnation. They have to work TOGETHER to find Sora, because they are one another’s narrative and thematic opposites. Kairi is too stagnant on her own, and Riku too volatile. Sora is the healthy middle between them, the center-point that can bind the light and the dark TOGETHER for one purpose.

Kairi is narratively and thematically important to Kingdom Hearts. She represents something, and trying to take the things that reinforce her narrative importance to the story (her representation of the light, her narrative purpose of ‘disruption’ in her arrival via the meteor shower, her position as the one who grounds Sora in opposition to Riku’s position as the one who drives Sora to push himself and achieve more) not only undermines her story, it undermines Riku’s.

#Time to swing the bat at the hornet's nest I guess #God forbid women do anything smh #This thing of writing Kairi off as 'wasted potential' while assigning her importance to Riku is honestly just the same shit as like #the 2002 habit of making her evil in fanfic so she's not a threat with a progressive little hat on it but it's literally just the same shit #Kairi is important to the themes!! She and Riku share an equal and opposite narrative importance!!#It's undermining RIKU ALSO to give Kairi's shit to him!! Riku worked hard on his arc can you fucking let him just be who he is #He doesn't want to be the perfect guy better than everybody else that was the whole point of his story!!#He had to take a level in humility!#PLEASE for the love of god look at a story holistically and not just 'everything here must be about my ship'#Which I also like that ship!! Kairi is too stagnant for Sora #There is already plenty in the narrative for Riku to be a good match for Sora #You don't need to take Kairi's shit too!! Goddamn.

since we're all having fun talking about theories and headcanons before the game drops. one thing that i do want for missing link, that is mostly wishful thinking on my part, is a reveal for kairi being a descendant of the player

this is based on their parallels of being shooting stars later found washed up on a beach from the new missing link trailer, plus that one moment from KH1 where kairi's grandma tells her about the age of the fairytales and nothing else lmfao

and i want that so badly because. it would be so fucking ironic and poetic to have kairi be a direct descendant of the one person that raised and cared so much for xehanort. the player, whose memories of ephemer and skuld and chirithy and everyone else influenced xehanort into starting his whole ass spiral and descent into darkness

only for her (and sora) to be the ones to get xehanort to stop in the end. ending a cycle of sorts. for her to be haunted by the memory of xehanort, the same way xehanort was "haunted" by the memory of the player's past life

PLUS. i want it to SPECIFICALLY recontextualize kairi's inheritance of the keyblade from BBS. because kairi's reason to wield a keyblade being nothing more than an "accident" feels like such a disservice to her AND aqua??

if they could recontextualize xehanort into whole new depths in dark road, i dont see why they couldn't reframe that moment as kairi reclaiming a dormant power, her own heritage that her bloodline forgot for centuries, since knowledge about keyblades and wielders began to fade out over time to the point where people who KNEW about them thought they were evil. makes sense that as the age of fairytales is left FORGOTTEN, no one can remember how to summon a keyblade, let alone the knowledge to create one from someone's heart. but having a strong heart (one of the requisites for bequeathing ceremonies) and being in direct contact with a keyblade, could just. help jog the memory a bit

and show that yeah. kairi deserves to wield a keyblade because she has a strong heart, and because this was her heritage that was taken away from her when the worlds began to drift away from each other and so on. not because of an accident

everytime chance, fate and destiny are brought up in the saga to explain why something. happened the way it did. it carries so much weight and so many events that led to That Point. but kairi's inheritance as of right now was just. yeah, an accident. no ceremony at all AND I JUST THINK SHE DESERVES RLLY COOL THINGS OKAY
