North Star Series
Chapter 40 - The Very Short Engagement
Start here:
Summary: Plot twist 😉
Warning: none that I remember
~•~
Someone was knocking at the door.
"Go away, Fred," George muttered and rolled over to pull Y/N close. "We agreed I get the room tonight." He was back at Hogwarts, and it was Thursday night, his and Y/N's night to get the dorm room to themselves.
The knocking continued.
George groaned, rolling back over and rubbing his eyes. "Alright, alright. Gimme a bloody minute." He reached over the side of the bed to grab his pants, only to discover they weren't there. That was strange. He and Y/N always kept their clothes nearby in case they had to get dressed quickly.
George opened his eyes and realized that he was not at Hogwarts, nor was it night. He was instead in his apartment bedroom, and according to his clock, it was almost noon.
That's when everything came flooding back, and a surge of euphoria overtook him. He looked over at Y/N, now his fiancé, and smiled. She was beginning to stir but wasn't yet awake. He was about to lean over and kiss her nose when the knocking started back up.
Except it wasn't knocking. It was tapping. On the bedroom window. He looked up to see Artemis, his parents' new owl waiting outside patiently.
Well, at least he didn't have to get dressed for that. Good thing, too, since his clothes from last night lay in a pile on the floor next to the dining room table.
~•~
"You really don't care?" George looked stunned. "I thought every girl wanted the fairytale wedding."
"Not me," Y/N smiled. "The marriage is far more important to me than the wedding. I'd marry you on the side of the road and wearing a potato sack."
They'd talked about being married many times, but it wasn't until the letter arrived that George realized they'd never discussed getting married. He just always assumed, because of her parents' drunken Vegas nuptials, that she would want a proper wedding.
Except she didn't. And truthfully, he was okay with that. More than ok.
"I'd elope with you right now, except..." He looked down at the parchment on the table.
"Same," she picked up the letter and reread it.
Dear Y/N,
I'm so excited! When do you two plan to announce your engagement? Hopefully soon! I can't wait to help plan the wedding!!!
Love,
Ginny
"It'd break her heart if we ran off and eloped," Y/N sighed. "I can't do that to her."
"Me either," George agreed.
Y/N folded up the letter and placed it back in the envelope. "So, when do you want to make the announcement?
~•~
Two days later, at the Burrow, George and Y/N announced their engagement. It went exactly as they'd expected. Molly nearly smothered them both. Ginny spent half the night bragging that she knew before her mum. And then everyone else gave hugs or handshakes and offered their hearty congratulations.
"We're actually thinking something small and simple," George said before Molly went overboard with grandiose plans.
"And we'd like to do it as soon as possible," Y/N added.
"How soon?" Arthur asked.
"We were thinking mid-January," George answered. "Everything will be wound down from the holidays, and it'll give her grandma and her best friend time to make arrangements to fly over."
"Are you sure that's safe," Hermione asked. "With everything... going on."
"We'll make it safe. We're not leaving her family out," Molly asserted with such finality that no one else dared to argue.
"Well then, that doesn't give us much time to plan," Ginny said, breaking the silence. "So we best get to it."
~•~
Five hours later
Y/N fell face first onto the bed as soon as she and George got home.
"Tired, love?" He smiled, rubbing her back.
"Mmfmhmfm," she answered.
"Sorry, sweetheart. I don't speak muffled pillow."
Y/N rolled over and gave him an apologetic smile. "I don't think I've ever been this exhausted in my life. I can't believe we planned the entire wedding in one night."
"Well, I, for one, am quite impressed," he stretched out across the bed beside her.
Y/N smiled and nuzzled her face into his neck.
"I just don't like having to wait a month," he mummered.
Y/N was quiet for a few moments, then she leaned back and looked at him. "So, why should we?"
"What? You mean cancel the wedding?"
"No," Y/N sat up. "I mean, we could get married tomorrow and not tell anyone. Except for Fred, of course, but he'd never breathe a word of it."
George sat up, meeting her eye to eye. "Get married? Tomorrow?"
She nodded.
"This what you really want? Truly?"
"Yes, truly," she admitted. "I don't want to wait anymore than you do. I want to marry you tomorrow."
He stared at her, searching her eyes for any doubts, before a huge grin spread across his face, and he tackled her. "You are the most amazing woman to ever live," he said. "And I can't believe that tomorrow I get to call you my wife." He leaned in to kiss her, then paused, eyes widening. "We need to tell Fred! C'mon!" He started to pull her up but stopped. "Never mind, you're tired. I'll go get him," he jumped up. "Be right back!"
Y/N giggled, watching him run out the door. Godric, she loved that man more than life. George Weasley was her dream come true.
She leaned back thinking about their long-running "argument" as to who was the lucky one in the relationship and finally decided they were both right.

How Marxist-Feminist prisoners resisted prison uniforms
Tumblr media
Yes, tension had diminished for a while, but now it came roaring back. The enemy didn’t implement all our demands. He withdrew many of the rights we’d fought for or never put them into practice at all. He censored the newspapers—he cut out the most important articles before we got them. Books we ordered arrived after months of waiting because they were supposedly being “examined.” He rejected requests made by the prisoners’ representatives. He wanted to keep us from knowing that our resistance could ever succeed, and to keep us in constant fear.
Uncertainty was brewing. Communication between the wards remained difficult, but some messages from the men reached us, verbal and written, saying that the enemy now insisted on them singing the national anthem once a week, addressing the captain as “commander,” and counting off. What did we think about it? they asked. “If you don’t go along with it, then we won’t either,” the men wrote. But another message said they’d decided: “We decided to stick to the agreement for a while, to see what the administration would do.” That bothered me. So far, the enemy had failed to force us [women] to address him as “commander.”
For a time, our representative had said “commander” during roll call, when she called out her number, but we’d stopped that too. We’d sidestepped a lot of rules or just ignored them. For us to start following that rule now, when we hadn’t before, would be a big setback, and it would mean we were submitting to military discipline. I wrote back, “We won’t abide by your decision. It puts the whole resistance in a bad light.” The men criticized that but let us decide for ourselves. We communicated our decision to the representatives, to the other prisoners, and to the families, who made a joint petition to the military commander.
We informed the lawyers, but they were even more useless than our families—they did nothing. The prison authorities issued a new order: “Every prisoner is a soldier and is to be treated like a soldier.” It went on and on. And then finally a rumor started that we were to get prison uniforms. Uniforms! We couldn’t imagine it—we thought of the striped convict garb in American films. Were they going to make us wear standardized blouses and skirts or shorts? We laughed about it, but seriously, what did it signal about the prison? The men friends warned all wards: “The purpose of the uniforms is to create a unitary human type. They are an attack on the resistance. We will refuse to wear them.”
We took to wearing several layers of underwear under our normal clothes, in case the enemy tried to take them away. The idea of being stripped made us cringe. The soldiers would certainly attack if they set eyes on naked or half-naked women. It would be ugly. But we were determined to refuse the uniforms. Nor would we take a step backwards or give up improvements we’d gained in the death fast. Then we heard that some of the men had been isolated for defying or insulting the soldiers. When we saw them in the courtroom or the infirmary, they looked pale because they were being denied time in the exercise yard. Diseases were spreading. None of the TKP women prisoners were forced to comply with the new rules, due to their conciliatory attitude toward the enemy.
On January 1, 1984, our uprising began. We built barricades, placing iron beds and tables at the doors. The steel lockers were as tall as the doors, and the inner and outer doors were separated by only a short distance. The soldiers were afraid to open the outer door. Looking in through the slot, they just saw a steel locker. [Unlike the 1983 death fast, leadership cadre did not organize this action. The morale, experience, and confidence gained by the September 1983 resistance enabled broad participation.] Knowing they’d throw smoke bombs in through the door slots, we taught all the prisoners how to cover their mouth and nose with a damp cloth. We banged plates against the iron window frames and against the doors, making a racket. We chanted slogans, and sang revolutionary songs, and recited poetry. That was how we protested torture—we didn’t have any other way. The barricades reminded me of what I’d read about the Paris Commune. The people and resistance units had built barricades on the streets and fought behind them. We knew about barricades from novels and movies.
Now we were constructing them ourselves, under very different conditions. Our only weapons were our beliefs, our will, and our naked bodies. At the moment, only our voices were fighting. The enemy could still break open the door, tear down walls, or come in through the windows—but we didn’t care. The important thing was to make it as hard as we could for him. Later we found out that barricades had been erected in many other wards as well. But prisoners were still dragged to the movie theater. Those who refused to wear uniforms were stripped naked and tortured. Those who capitulated and accepted the rules were housed in a ward together.

2023 CHARACTER WRAPPED
Thanks for the tag @prodogg!
Here are my top characters this year.
1. N I played Pokemon White and White 2 early this year for the first time and was really invested by his story. I even broke out of my art dry spell back in spring by drawing him, but it's still a wip. To me, he symbolized moving on from old chapters of your life and starting new ones.
Tumblr media
2. Lusamine I also got into the Alola Pokemon games this year (though I didn't play them) and really liked her as a tragic villain. I think she deserves to heal from her past and make amends with her children.
Tumblr media
3. Elizabeth Swann I've always loved her character, but this summer I got back into writing my AU fic about her and really enjoyed delving into her character.
Tumblr media
4. Volo I played Pokemon Legends Arceus back in January this year, and Volo's one of my two favorite NPCs from the game. I was indifferent to him at first, but he ended up playing a very important role in the storyline, and his character captivated me.
Tumblr media
5. Ingo He's my other favorite NPC in PLA. I loved how he was in the same situation as the player character, being brought to the game's region from a different time. And it felt like he had a nice mentor-mentee relationship with my protag.
Tumblr media
6. Azula Azula will always make my list of top characters, though I wasn't very focused on ATLA this year. Still, it got revived when the new comic came out.
Tumblr media
Tagging (no pressure): @crookedmouth-mountainbones, @proxissima, @corvus-cucullatus, @debcroft13, @number1villainstan, @evarinaandlat, @wayward-thrawn, and anyone else who wants!

Look for the Helpers
First posted: November 13, 2018
Focuses on: BatKids (Dick POV, Jason focused)
Favorite bookmark: "I am bawling."
Tier: Decidedly mid.
This is my "behind the scenes" series where I indulge myself horribly by annotating my fics. Link to the fic itself above. Thoughts below the cut.
I'd been chewing for awhile on the idea of Mr. Rogers and how much he meant to people. The Won't You Be My Neighbor documentary had released in January of this same year, and I'd sat in a theater and quietly bawled with a dark room full of strangers. Because his show was on PBS and geared, like Sesame Street, toward low income kids, making him have an outsized impact on Jason made the most sense.
Dick wondered if he would ever be used to the feeling of disconnect that came after a disaster. It felt like… He stabbed at a macaroni noodle and considered the radiant numbness spreading out from his chest.
This first bit, Dick mulling on the weirdness after a disaster that you manage to survive, was pulled from personal experience, but with the last half decade being what it's been, I can't even tell you which one I was pulling from. Hurricane wakes, most likely, though who really knows.
The never-ending white noise of sirens rushing to and fro weren’t real. The loss. The devastation. The chaos.
That said, wow, what a weirdly prescient thing to read back through on this side of 2020.
“I don’t think human eyes are supposed to be that big,” he remarked solemnly, which prompted a snort of laughter from the others and placid disregard from Tim. “It’s anime, Dickie, don’t be so uncool.” Jason’s faux-whine made it clear that he was not, in fact, defending Tim’s artwork. “It’s a legitimate art form, and you both are snobs,” Tim said, his tone unruffled as he reached for his sandwich with his right hand, his left never slowing as he traced the warrior girl’s floating hair in purple crayon. “It is,” Damian agreed, which surprised Dick until he added, “when done correctly.” “Oh, bite me,” Tim retorted, but without any heat.
Of course Tim is a weeb. Tim and Damian.
“Is that Steph?” Jason asked, head now tilted to get a better look at Tim’s drawing. Intrigued, Dick craned his neck as well. “What? No!” Now Tim’s head snapped up, and he glared at Jason as one arm curled protectively around the crayon drawing. Dick would have been inclined to argue that the drawing could have been of anyone, as Tim wasn’t quite good enough to render a clear likeness. But the tips of Tim’s ears were pink.
Nowadays I'm awfully ambivalent on Tim/Steph and trend toward apathetic neutral. CECverse is an exception.
“Jason, if you lean over any farther, you’re going to knock over your soup,” Dick pointed out instead. Jason scowled, but settled back in his chair. “I’d make a joke, but one, we don’t make gags about Nazis anymore, and two, that show is old as dirt.”
I could not have predicted the Seinfeld renaissance among the youth.
Beneath the table, Dick tapped his fingertips together, one after the other. The numbness was still there, but if he didn’t think about it, it receded from the foreground. Not lessened or disappeared, just backed away to hover like a thin blanket over everything except what he was focusing on, which in turn made what he was focusing on seem harshly bright and loud. That was okay, though, if what he was focusing on was his brothers. Dick popped another forkful of cheesy noodles into his mouth and studied them, careful to keep a slight smile on his face as he did.
Oh. I remember what I was pulling from now. Not the numbness but the way you can chat and laugh and joke and seem normal when the world is upended and nothing is normal at all. Loss is weird.
They all tended to huddle a little closer together when Bruce was away.
I like this, the idea of them all gravitating, deliberately or subconsciously, so they're a team huddled, facing outward, without Bruce to hold their center.
Only Cass had been allowed to stay at the Manor. She and Alfred were planning a Masterpiece Theater Poirot mystery binge, with some Miss Marple and Jeeves and Wooster thrown in for flavoring. Dick wasn’t sure how much of the dialogue Cass could follow, but she seemed to find it a fun challenge to identify the murderer by body language alone. And anyone could enjoy the comedy of old J&W.
This took me a second to figure out, what Alfred and Cass might bond over and why, especially since Alfred is verbally cerebral and Cass finds words less useful. I think I made it work.
Jason was picking at Tim, who pretended to be grumpy and ignored his aggravating older brother in favor of tackling his roast beef sandwich with both hands.
Why roast beef, I don't know.
Dick took a few texts himself, mostly to coordinate the efforts and to relay the continued lack of news. Jason received none, though Dick caught him peeking at the screen once or twice.
I had a whole secondary storyline worked out with Bizarro that wasn't necessary or important at all but that would include a line about Jason taking care of Biz's plant. Something about it was supposed to be absolutely gutting, but I couldn't fit it in and now I don't remember what I had in mind.
Dick ducked his head as a familiar face filled the screen—Superman, a lone curl tumbling charmingly down his forehead, his chin turned to stare bravely into the distance. It was a stupid photo, boldly heroic in none of the ways that made Clark truly brave. That was the point, he knew, of a secret identity—no strong points of connection—but it rankled him to see the man portrayed as a stoic bastion of strength instead of the smiling, gentle man who used to pick Dick up by his ankles and swing him upside down.
Dick's point of view was a deliberate pick, as the eldest brother minding the wellbeing of the youngers, but also for how this specific worry would pick at him. Clark is a bigger part of his life than for the others.
But that was how these things went. Those that left were free to be reshaped into whatever was needed by those who were left behind. A beloved friend. A solemn warrior. A good soldier.
Yes, that was a jab.
The other members of the superhero community did their best to fill the power void, especially in Metropolis, which had been hardest hit and was now missing its white knight, though the Kent boys and Kara did their best.
I think this is the only time I ever acknowledge Kara in my fics. I don't know her. She will not appear.
Dick clamped a firm hand onto Damian’s shoulder and shoved the boy back into his seat before he could crawl over the table to stab Tim with his fork.
I make too many Damian stabbing jokes in these early fics. Or rather, I the writer mean them as funny moments but in-world they wouldn't be funny or in character, really. He's got a temper but he's not an impetuous hothead. I think I've gotten better (I hope) about, when I do joke, they're in-world jokes as well.
The diner was nestled between a rising skyscraper and a small neighborhood park, the kind community developers liked to slot into any little niche so that they could advertise nearby green space to prospective renters. It was no more than a small patch of green ringed with trees, bisected by a path with a small, two-tiered fountain in the middle. This neighborhood had been untouched by the extraterrestrial destruction, and the paths were at a midday lull, soft greys and greens and whites unbroken except for a jogger here, a mother and child there, a dogwalker off in the distance.
I plucked this park from real life. I don't remember where I was now, maybe Maryland, visiting friends? But I can still see the real-world park in my head, and how I altered it to make it into a place I could use in Gotham.
From what Dick could remember, even before, Jason had hated to show weakness. Though more expressive than Bruce by far, he hid his fears and sorrows beneath anger and rage. He had, in many ways, been more vulnerable with Bruce than Dick had been, willing to confront and challenge the older man when upset, but he had hated being coddled. The safest thing to do when Jason was in turmoil was to give him space and return when the dust had settled.
meeeeeeeeeeeeee
“Maybe.” Dick tried to remember everything he had seen Bruce do right and everything he had seen Bruce do wrong. “But it’s still important to you, so it’s important to me. Tell me.”
I firmly love best a Bruce who doesn't always get it right but also doesn't always get it wrong. He's just a guy doing his best.
“I thought…” Jason slumped to the side until his shoulder rested against the tree. “I thought it’d taken everything it could. I lost a year of my life, my family, my home, my sanity.” He barked out a laugh, raspy and rough and dark with bitterness. “What else could I lose, right?”
I also love Jason getting to grieve his missing years, not just raging against Bruce and Gotham. I should do more with that.
“It wasn’t exciting or really funny. It was just this… this old guy. He’d come in to this clean house and hang up his jacket and take off his shoes and sing. He’d tell stories with these stupid puppets, and he never yelled or got mad. And he’d talk right to me. Every time, it was like he was talking right to me.” Jason swiped at his eyes again, fast, hard. “I guess it was because it was public access and they didn’t have a lot of other programming, but it felt like every time I needed him, he was on. Even when I got older, I’d turn him on sometimes, because no matter how scared or angry or sad I was, I knew he’d fix it. He’d tell me he was proud of me, that I was special, that I was okay just the way I was.”
I always hated the puppets, so that bit was more me than Jason. Jason was too young to get the show on first-run, so it makes sense that the reruns would be frequent and seemingly available whenever he needed them to be on. And it makes sense that a calm, gentle, supportive show would be a lifeline to him, a world where big, scary things don't appear or are talked through when they do.
Instead, he had ended up a murder victim and a killer. Dick wanted to pull Jason into a hug and let him know that he could still make a difference, that he had made a difference in Crime Alley, even if they still butted heads over methodology sometimes. He didn’t need to be ashamed of who he was. But then Jason whispered, “I didn’t know he’d died.”
Dick: Oh he's having a crisis about his behavior, oh no.
Jason: actually having an entirely different crisis
Like, imagine if you blipped out of existence for a few years and when you came back, you found out about Robin Williams or Steve Irwin retroactively.
They had never done anything like this, even before. Dick had been too busy being Nightwing to be a big brother, and Jason had had no reason to trust him. But that didn’t mean Dick couldn’t be here now, to make up for all his failures before. He pressed his lips to Jason’s scalp, then rested his cheek atop the man’s head and waited.
I still haven't fully settled in my own head exactly what the Nightwing-Robin transition was like for the three of them. When I started, I leaned on the fanon interpretation of Bruce and Dick fighting a lot and Dick and Jason as emotionally distant strangers. Now I think I've relegated a lot of that to individual interpretation (Dick feeling a lot of guilt that doesn't wholly match reality, for example), but it's still pretty fluid.
Dick could feel a tear or two wash down his own face as he tightened his hold on his brother’s shoulders. “He would be proud of you, you know. He wasn’t the kind of guy to ask for perfection, right? Just that you try. He’d be so proud, Jay.” “Why, because you are?” Jason had tried for sardonic, but the wry jab came out waterlogged and muffled between sniffles. “Yeah. Yeah, I am,” Dick murmured.
Choked myself up a little there.
“Mine was Bob Ross,” Tim offered suddenly. He had sat on the end, furthest from Jason but still close enough to be heard even in a low voice as he hugged his knees. “Not his death so much. He died before I knew who he was. But I liked to watch him paint. He made beautiful things from his mistakes. His happy accidents. It was good to hear, sometimes.” Dick and Jason took that in silently, digesting everything Tim had said and everything he hadn’t.
I knew each kid would have their own person to name, because that's how these conversations go. Mention Steve Irwin and someone else will mention Robin Williams or Chadwick Boseman or Amy Winehouse or whoever. Everyone has a death of a stranger that meant an awful lot to them. Figuring out who to pair to whom was an interesting puzzle, and I think the pairings I picked made sense. (Am realizing now how many shocking celebrity deaths are men.)
One quirk of timing with this fic was I wrote it and happened to post, completely by accident, the day that Stan Lee died. Folks were really feeling it in my comments section.

For the first time in more than 40 years, a Republican could win the governor’s seat in Oregon, breaching the seemingly solid Democratic line of states running along the Pacific coastline of the US.
The tight race between former Oregon House speaker Tina Kotek, a Democrat, and former Oregon House minority leader Christine Drazan, a Republican, which in the latest polling showed Drazan with a hairline lead, indicates a rebuff of the current term-limited liberal governor, Kate Brown.
Brown has one of the lowest approval ratings of any governor in the country amid brewing concern over how state leadership has handled everything from the pandemic to homelessness.
But it’s a third-party candidate with support from both Republicans and Democrats, along with contributions from the richest man in the state, that have truly set a Republican on a path toward possible victory.
“Democrats are pretty good at running a red-blue race in Oregon … But the dynamics of a three-way race have really kind of thrown that playbook out the window,” said Jake Weigler, a progressive political strategist in Oregon not involved in the race.
Betsy Johnson, who was a moderate Democrat while serving as a state senator and now is running as an independent, has been forecast to receive as much as 14% of the vote. Outside of independent voters, 17% of Democrats plan to vote for her, while only 9% of Republicans do, according to an Emerson College Polling survey released earlier this month.
Rebecca Tweed, a Republican strategist in Oregon with no connection to the governor’s race, said it will be this subset of voters to watch come election day.
“We’ll have to see if any of those voters that got pulled toward Betsy end up going back into their corners of the Democratic and Republican parties,” she said.
But it could also come down to what independent voters decide to do next month.
Ariya Ahrary, who has lived in Oregon since 2007, said she was initially very happy to see the independent candidate on the ballot. But after taking a closer look at each candidate’s policies, she said she now will likely vote for Kotek in hopes that she will help change the direction of the state.
“We do want actual real change instead of just all talk. Hopefully that happens, that it’s not just all talk, that it’s actual action,” she said.
By far Johnson’s largest single financial contribution has come from Phil Knight, co-founder of Nike. Altogether, he has sent $3.75m to Johnson’s campaign since January, and then earlier this month sent $1.5m to Drazan. In an interview with the New York Times earlier this month, he said he would do anything to keep Kotek out of the governor’s seat.
The gubernatorial race projections in a state where Joe Biden won by 16 points just two years ago have been a shock to many across the nation. They have prompted national political figures to visit the Pacific north-west hoping to drum up support for their candidates.
On Saturday, Biden spoke at an event in Portland, where he highlighted the increasingly important role governors play in policy implementation, while praising Kotek’s leadership and bravery.
“You’re a progressive state. You’re a state that’s always been ahead of the curve. Stay ahead of the curve, and elect Tina,” he said.
Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin, a rising Republican star, spoke at a rally for Drazan on Tuesday, while Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts, attended an event for Kotek this weekend.
Kotek, Drazan and Johnson recently came together for the race’s final televised debate. The largely mild-mannered occasion was punctuated by sharp criticisms hurled between Drazan, Johnson and their Democratic rival, including over abortion.
Following the US supreme court’s overturning of Roe v Wade earlier this year, Oregon has positioned itself as a safe haven for abortions. Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood board member, described herself as pro-choice. Kotek, who was endorsed by Planned Parenthood PAC of Oregon and helped with the legislative effort to codify abortion access into state law in 2017, said she is a strong supporter of abortion access, including potentially using taxpayer money to support that type of care. She accused Drazan of posing a threat to abortion access in the state.
Drazan rebutted by saying while she wouldn’t use taxpayer funds to support abortion, the practice would remain legal. “It gets more and more startling to me the extent to which Tina Kotek will lie to voters,” she said
Another key issue the candidates responded to during the debate was the state’s response to the pandemic when it came to closing schools. Drazan accused both Governor Brown and Kotek of throwing “our kids under the bus”, while Johnson said: “The single worst thing we did during Covid was to shut kids out of the classroom.”
Kotek, who agreed that students were kept out of the classroom too long, said it was in fact her Republican opponent who did the throwing by voting against a multibillion-dollar education bill in 2019.
But it was a question from a resident of Wilsonville, a city about 17 miles south of Portland, that spotlighted an issue at the center of this race: “Since you’ve been a lifelong Democrat, how do you square yourself with knowing that your current efforts will probably cost Democrats the governorship for the state?”
Johnson told the audience that she joined the race because she sees herself as the best candidate to lead a state that has “gone off the rails”, and that she has no plan to drop out.
She said: “I believe sports oddsmakers don’t win games. Polls don’t predict elections. I’ve seen enough fourth-quarter finishes to know that it’s not over until it’s over. And I’m in this race until the absolute end.”

This came to me like a vision in the night and I just had to make it!
The UNIT men are all some flavor of himbo, but here's where they differ. Harry's a chauvinist. Yates is an asshole. The Brigadier is allowed to have one braincell. But Benton? Well, Benton is just the perfect man! A wonderful specimen of a himbo! Look at that precious smile! How could you say no to it?

So as part of my Subway Master brainrot, I've been looking at Ingo and Emmet's teams in Black and White (and by extension also in Black and White 2) to see what their teams can say about them as characters and just... It is infinitely funny to me that Ingo's entire strategy in multi battles seems to be the classic "Use Earthquake until everything dies" technique! A favorite technique of mine (as a ground specialist)! This specifically especially applies to their second teams during multi battles as Emmet's half of the team seems to be built around the idea of trying to avoid Ingo using Earthquake.
It probably goes saying that of the 6 Pokemon that Ingo uses in Black and White that literally HALF of them know Earthquake! Like, yeah, Earthquake is a good move and all, but Ingo only uses 1 ground type Pokemon and it would probably be better to go for more type coverage? Or to use more varied strategies?
Just... The mental image of Emmet and Ingo discussing their muti battle strategy only for Ingo to ultimately be like, "Well, I'm just going to use Earthquake until everything else faints." To which Emmet can only scream inside and find Pokemon that he likes that can avoid said Earthquaking... It's just incredibly funny to me. But also as a ground specialist where "Use Earthquake until everything else dies" is THE technique for the type... Ingo really is a man after my own heart specifically, isn't he?
At least he seems to have learned his lesson and isn't just Earthquaking everything to death in Legends Arceus. He's much more of an Earth Power kind of guy now!

I for one think that it would be exceedingly funny for Emmet and Ingo to have a backstory where, when they were younger, it turns out that they were actually serial train hijackers. They did not work for Nimbasa/Unova's railway system at all, and even though they had asked and applied several times to work for them and were more than qualified, were always rejected for having a criminal record... Of hijacking trains... Because the railway system refused to hire them... Even though they always ran the trains on time and according to regulation, never ever hurting anyone in the process.
However whenever they were caught illegally driving trains, law enforcement could almost never bring them in because they were just CRAZY strong trainers. Since this is the Pokemon World, most conflicts are resolved through Pokemon battles, so whenever the cops would try to bring them in, Emmet and Ingo would always resist, leading to a Pokemon battle, meaning that they would win, and would usually be able to get away because of it!
When they were beginning to make the Battle Subway a thing, even though the bosses absolutely hated to admit it, even they had to acknowledge that Emmet and Ingo were the perfect candidates for the job. Both were exceedingly powerful trainers that knew trains and the entire subway system better than anyone. So they made a deal with the twins. So long as they didn't illegally hijack any more trains, and otherwise maintained a clean record, they could work for the Battle Subway. Obviously they took the offer! It was the perfect solution for all parties ever since.

So I just discovered something absolutely adorable about the Pokemon Ingo and Emmet use.
When it comes to what Emmet and Ingo's starter Pokemon could have possibly been, there isn't really much of a consensus. Probably the most popular idea is that Ingo started with a Litwick and Emmet started with Tynamo. However I want to make an alternative suggestion. They each started out with a Klink of their own!
So hear me out a little. I don't know how well known this is, but Ingo shares his Pokemon with Emmet.

In Hurricane Ian’s wake, dangers persist (AP) People kayaking down streets that were passable just a day or two earlier. Hundreds of thousands without power. National Guard helicopters flying rescue missions to residents still stranded on Florida’s barrier islands. Days after Hurricane Ian carved a path of destruction from Florida to the Carolinas, the dangers persisted, and even worsened in some places. It was clear the road to recovery from this monster storm will be long and painful. And Ian was still not done. The storm doused Virginia with rain Sunday, and officials warned of the potential for severe flooding along its coast, beginning overnight Monday. Flooded roadways and washed-out bridges to barrier islands left many people isolated amid limited cellphone service and a lack of basic amenities such as water, electricity and the internet. Officials warned that the situation in many areas isn’t expected to improve for several days because the rain that fell has nowhere to go because waterways are overflowing.
Trump staffers not returning White House records, National Archives says (Reuters) Former President Donald Trump’s administration has not turned over all presidential records and the National Archives will consult with the Justice Department on whether to move to get them back, the agency has told Congress. The Archives knows some White House staffers conducted official business on personal electronic messaging accounts that were that were not copied or forwarded to their official accounts, in violation of the Presidential Records Act, Archivist Debra Wall said. “NARA has been able to obtain such records from a number of former officials and will continue to pursue the return of similar types of presidential records from former officials,” Wall said. Trump is facing a criminal investigation by the Justice Department for retaining government records—some marked as highly classified, including “top secret”—at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida after leaving office in January 2021. The FBI seized more than 11,000 records, including about 100 documents marked as classified, in a court-approved Aug. 8 search at Mar-a-Lago.
Haiti reports cholera deaths for first time in 3 years (AP) Haiti’s government on Sunday announced that at least eight people have died from cholera, raising concerns about a potentially fast-spreading scenario and reviving memories of an epidemic that killed nearly 10,000 people a decade ago. The cases—the first cholera deaths reported in three years—came in a community called Dekayet in southern Port-au-Prince and in the gang-controlled seaside slum of Cite de Soleil, where thousands of people live in cramped, unsanitary conditions. “Cholera is something that can spread very, very quickly,” warned Laure Adrien, director general of Haiti’s health ministry. Food or water contaminated with the cholera bacteria can lead to severe diarrhea and dehydration that can be deadly.
In Brazilian Amazon, a 1,000-mile voyage so people can vote (AP) In most democracies, citizens go to the polls. But in Brazil’s sparsely populated Amazon region, the polls often go to the voters. Most people in the vast rainforest live in urban areas, but thousands reside in tiny villages several days from the nearest city by boat. Amazonas, Brazil’s biggest state, is triple the size of California yet has only about one-third the population of greater Los Angeles. More than half its cities can’t be reached at all by road, and some are hundreds of kilometers from the state capital, Manaus. Logistics pose a challenge even in Manaus, a sprawling municipality of 2.2 million people. On Saturday, The Associated Press accompanied election workers setting up a voting place in the Bela Vista do Jaraqui community, a three-hour boat trip from the city. Villages in the Javari Valley territory received their first voting centers in 2014. To deliver a voting machine to the most distant village, Vida Nova, election officials usually fly in a small plane from Manaus to Cruzeiro do Sul, a city in Acre state. There, they board a helicopter for the final leg. It is a 1,000-mile round-trip voyage to reach a place with 327 voters, in a nation with an electorate of more than 150 million people.
Norway posts soldiers at oil, gas plants after Nord Stream leaks (Reuters) Norway’s military said on Monday it had posted soldiers to help guard major onshore oil and gas processing plants, part of a wider effort to boost security amid suspicion that sabotage caused leaks in the Nord Stream gas pipelines last week. Russia’s Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines burst on Sept. 26, draining gas into the Baltic Sea off the coast of Denmark and Sweden. Seismologists registered explosions in the area, and police in several countries have launched investigations. Norway, Europe’s largest gas supplier and a major oil exporter, last week deployed its navy and air force to patrol offshore petroleum fields and announced it would receive assistance from Britain, Germany and France in doing so. At the request of Norwegian police, the Norwegian Home Guard, a rapid mobilisation force, on Monday began to deploy troops at plants responsible for processing and exporting oil and gas.
I Lived in Russia? Annexation Is News to Key City Reclaimed by Ukraine (NYT) As dusk gathered on Sunday, Elena Kharkovska stood in the courtyard of her apartment block, contemplating what she had just learned: Without ever moving, she had supposedly lived in Russia for one day. President Vladimir V. Putin decreed on Friday that four regions of Ukraine—including the province of Donetsk, which includes Ms. Kharkovska’s hometown, Lyman—had been annexed into Russia. But before the news could reach her, Ukrainian soldiers were in control of the city again, as Russian forces retreated. Without electricity, radios or the internet, residents of the city of Lyman said, they were unaware of the annexation. “I didn’t hear anything about it,” Ms. Kharkovska said as she watched a kettle of buckwheat simmer on a campfire. The town has been without cooking gas for months. “Nobody told us anything” on Friday about how her town had supposedly been grafted onto Russia, or on Saturday, when Ukrainian troops took it back.
Ukrainian troops continue offensive, claim new gains (AP) Ukrainian troops continued to push forward Monday with their offensive that has embarrassed Moscow, with Kyiv officials and foreign observers hinting at new gains in the southern strategic region of Kherson. Kherson has been one of the toughest battlefields for the Ukrainians, with slower progress when compared with Ukraine’s breakout offensive around the country’s second largest city of Kharkiv, in the northeast, that began last month. Russian military bloggers close to Moscow have increasingly acknowledged that Ukraine has superior manpower, backed by tank units, in the area. A Russian-installed official in the Kherson region, Kirill Stremousov, admitted in a video statement on Monday morning that the Ukrainian forces “have broken through a little deeper.” However, he insisted that “everything is under control” and that Russia’s “defense system is working” in the region.
Pope begs Putin to end ‘spiral of violence and death’ (Reuters) Pope Francis for the first time directly begged Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the “spiral of violence and death” in Ukraine, saying on Sunday that the crisis was risking a nuclear escalation with uncontrollable global consequences. In an address dedicated to Ukraine and made to thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square, Francis also condemned Putin’s latest annexation of parts of Ukraine as being against international law. He urged Putin to think of his own people in the event of an escalation. Saying he was haunted by “rivers of blood and tears that have been spilled in these months,” Francis also called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to be open to any “serious peace proposal”. He was making an urgent appeal “in the name of God” for an end to the conflict and said it was “absurd” that the world was risking a nuclear conflict.
UN: 5.7 million Pakistani flood victims to face food crisis (AP) The United Nations humanitarian agency is warning that about 5.7 million Pakistani flood survivors will face a serious food crisis in the next three months, as the death toll from the deluge rose on Monday. Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority reported that floods fueled by abnormally heavy monsoon rains have killed 1,695 people, affected 33 million, damaged more than 2 million homes and displaced hundreds of thousands now living in tents or makeshift homes. The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in its latest report Saturday said the current floods are expected to exacerbate food insecurity in Pakistan and said 5.7 million people in flood-affected areas will be facing a food crisis between September and November.
Iran's leader may signal tougher crackdown on protests (Reuters) Iran's supreme leader on Monday gave his full backing to security forces confronting protests ignited by the death of Mahsa Amini in custody, comments that could herald a harsher crackdown to quell unrest more than two weeks since she died. In his first remarks addressing the 22-year-old woman's death after being arrested for wearing clothes deemed un-Islamic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said her death "deeply broke my heart" and called it a "bitter incident" provoked by Iran's enemies. Security forces, including police and the volunteer Basij militia, have been leading a crackdown on the protests, with thousands arrested and hundreds injured, according to rights groups, which put the death toll at over 130. The unrest has spiralled into the biggest show of opposition to Iran's authorities in years, with many calling for the end of more than four decades of Islamic clerical rule. Khamenei said security forces had faced "injustice" during the protests. "In recent incidents, it is above all security forces including the police and Basij, as well as the people of Iran, who were wronged," he said.
Anger mounts toward police as Indonesia reels from stadium tragedy (Washington Post) As hospitals and mosques in Malang, Indonesia, work to identify victims of Saturday’s stadium stampede, anger is mounting toward police and the role they might have played in the deadly disaster—particularly against the scandal-ridden National Police force. On Saturday night, after the final whistle at a soccer match at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, fans from the losing team, Arema FC, leaped over barriers and entered the field, prompting security personnel to beat them back. Riot police in helmets and shields eventually fired canisters of tear gas directly into tightly packed stands, fueling mass panic. As of Monday morning, local health officials said at least 125 people, including 17 children, were killed while trying to escape through the stadium’s narrow exits, some of which were closed, according to survivors. Hundreds gathered for vigils and protests Sunday night in Malang, many of them calling for the government to launch an independent investigation into what happened.
In China, Living Not ‘With Covid,’ but With ‘Zero Covid’ (NYT) The signs of a looming lockdown in Shenzhen, China, had been building for a while. The city had been logging a few coronavirus infections for days. Daily Covid tests were required to go pretty much anywhere. Individual buildings had been sealed off. So when a hotel employee woke me up a little after 7 a.m. to explain that we were not allowed to step outside for four days, my initial disorientation quickly turned to resignation. Of course this happened. I live in China. As the rest of the world sheds more restrictions by the day, China’s rules are becoming more entrenched, along with the patterns of pandemic life under a government insistent on eliminating cases. People schedule lunch breaks around completing mandatory tests. They restructure commutes to minimize the number of health checkpoints along the way. A sense of possible disaster always lurks, driven by the experiences of Shanghai and other cities, where sudden lockdowns have left residents without food or medicine. A friend bought a second freezer so she could stock up on groceries. The disruptive becomes typical; the once-unimaginable, reality. The pandemic has imposed new rituals around the world, but in China, the extremes make that process more unsettling.

Benny the beluga whale 'left Thames in January'
BBC - August 2, 2019
A beluga whale seen living in the River Thames for three months last year has almost certainly headed home, according to the Port of London Authority (PLA).
"Benny the beluga" was first spotted off Gravesend on 25 September and regularly fed in sheltered areas along the Kent stretch of the river. Crowds gathered on the bank to catch a glimpse of him and local businesses cashed in with Benny souvenirs. Martin Garside said the last confirmed sighting was just before Christmas.
"We're fairly confident he went early in the new year. He didn't leave a thank you card for all the fish he ate," the PLA spokesman said.
'Not stupid'
There were numerous possible sightings in November and December, with one of the last in the Cliffe area, east of Gravesend. However, Mr Garside said it would have become increasingly difficult to see if he was still in the Thames during the winter months because he would only surface for three to four seconds, and could easily be confused with a wave during rough weather.
"We did fear something bad had happened, but he would have washed up in that case. He almost certainly came in for the fish stocks, but they do move around and change so it's fairly possible he would have swum out with the fish. Whales are not stupid and will move if they can't get food."

Behind Schedule
A/N: this isn’t what i expected when i started writing Talbott/MC/Charlie but i thought ‘meh boys fighting over one girl is so old school and a trope overused but still good when cooked right.’ but still. so i thought i might sprinkle in a few fluff and slow-burn with a dash of oblivious!mc cause why not. bon appétit.
How could she not possibly noticed the time? She should be in the library four hours ago, oh if only Tonks would stop her pranks (despite her knowing this was impossible, she wished anyway.). It didn’t help that Tulip was cheering her on as she dropped glue all over Charlie and Jae and then proceeded to dump feathers at them.
This started a chase with two girls laughing as they run while two boys leaving trails of feather ran after them, wands out, and casting a few jinxes their way. It was only in good fun until (Y/N) got hit with one of Charlie’s malicious spells directed at Tonks and Tulip’s way.
She was with Rowan who was obviously complaining about Ben’s odd behavior when she was cut midsentence because of the bucket full of cold water appearing on top of her head and drenching her in the process.
In the middle of January.
Rowan shouted in surprise and the four students, alarmed, stopped. Guilt drowned Charlie and started to fuss over her, apologizing as he took off his sticky feather-filled robe and draped over her shivering form.
“Oh merlin, we have to get her some new clothes and-”
Too late, McGonagall was already approaching them with this look on her face that if (Y/N) wasn’t cold to the point she was numb she would have felt shivers down her spine.
Charlie, Jae, Tonks, and Tulip were sent to detention while Professor McGonagall and Rowan escorted her to the Hospital Wing after the Gryffindor professor had cast a warming spell.
She hadn’t noticed the time until she can leave. (Y/N) who was good as new was finally settling down from the accident before she got hit with the memory of her promising Talbott to meet him in the library.
(Y/N) reached the library with ease since there were only a few students out and about. She thanked Madam Pomfrey silently for letting her out on a free period.
Despite having doubts that Talbott was still inside, she entered the library making sure not to be noticed by one of the strictest librarian known to wizardkind. Before she gets scolded for breathing (Y/N) noticed Talbott sitting alone, holding a book in his hand, looking slightly distracted and irritated.
She took a deep breath, rehearsed her apologies, and readied her explanation before nearing the teen with hands behind her back looking sheepish.
“Heyyy Talbott...” (Y/N) said lamely, she cursed herself for not thinking of, at least, a proper greeting. Maybe ‘Salutations, Monseuir Talbott.’ would have been more appropriate.
Talbott turned his head with creased brows and (Y/N) bit her lip in worry.
Maybe not...
Talbott closed the book and she started stuttering out her explanation.
“L-Listen, I’m so sorry. I didn’t- I wasn’t paying attention, then I was jinxed a-and I got drenched with cold water, Rowan was there and so is Tonks, Jae, Tulip, and Charlie, then-”
The boy stood up and held up his hand to silence her and she bit her lip again, nervous. “I know.” Talbott sighed out, clearly tired and a little resigned. “I asked Rowan when we were both in Transfiguration.”
“Oh, I thought you skipped class and waited for me... I felt kinda bad.”
“Don’t get too ahead of yourself (L/N), rest assured I’ll put my education first before you.” He deadpanned. (Y/N) blushed in embarrassment, fiddling with her fingers behind her back.
Talbott’s expression softened before sighing. “I apologize, I didn’t mean to be so- there has been a lot in my mind lately. It’s becoming quite tiring. I-”
(Y/N) was caught by surprise that her wide eyes met maroon ones and Talbott flinched with the sudden eye contact that he looked away quickly, lips pressed together in a thin line.
Confused, she waited in awkward silence until Talbott straightened his back and regained composure before meeting her eyes again. “I’m glad you’re doing better after the incident.”
(Y/N) lit up at the mention of her fast recovery, “Yes, well, you can thank Madam Pomfrey for that one. She is, no doubt, an extraordinary witch.”
“What else could she possibly be? Professor Dumbledore wouldn’t have hired her in the first pla-” Catching himself this time, he closed his mouth before finishing the sentence.
(Y/N) now looked at Talbott with a mixture of worry and confusion written on her face. “Talbott, is there something wrong?”
“I’m sorry, I- I don’t feel very well. Please excuse me.”
Before she could say anything else, Talbott went pass her, book still in hand as he went out of the library. Still a little bit befuddled she stood rooted to her spot wondering what was that about.
Entering the Dining Hall with Rowan, Diego, Andre, and Badeea, were all chatting animatedly before reaching their own respective seats. Dinner was quite a party, each member of her own little gang bombarded her with questions laced with concern that made her heart full as she stuffed herself with chicken.
“(Y/N), I truly am sorry.” Charlie with sad eyes and voice laced with guilt told her for the umpteenth time. “I really wasn’t being careful and you got hurt, and-” With a smile, she held up a finger.
“Oh stop worrying Charlie, I’m not made of glass. It was just a bucket of cold water, I faced much more dangerous creatures, dark wizards, and werewolves for merlin’s sake! It’s alright.”
Charlie who still wasn’t convinced, frowned and (Y/N) tried her best not to roll her eyes good-naturedly. “Besides, I think Professor McGonagall giving you detention is far worse than being soaked.”
“Still...” And it was soft, sincere, and sorry. She didn’t know why he was pressing such a small mistake. It was like he did something so horrible that he couldn’t get back from.
Placing a hand behind Charlie’s back, she gave him her best reassuring smile and for a moment time stood still. The warm glow of the candles above gave an ambiance in the room that seems to just fit their current situation.
(Y/N) didn’t know how Charlie’s eyes became so.... cyan.
Sharp laughter from the Dining Hall snapped them back to reality and (Y/N) dropped her hand and Charlie looked away, a little flustered while she contemplates.
After the Library and Dining Hall incident a few weeks later, she had lain in bed thinking of a few things. Firstly, she never knew what Talbott wanted from her and second, what was that all about with Charlie. It was all so... confusing. Not one made any sense.
Why Talbott was acting so differently and why Charlie suddenly felt like it was okay to avoid her every chance he gets. (Y/N) thought she might have done something to set them off but looking back, she couldn’t think of anything.
Other than pestering Talbott on becoming her friend, and Charlie isn’t a person easily offended. (Both of them really. However, her bird friend is a tad bit sensitive when it comes to his beliefs and opinions.)
Talbott, she thought, is quite frank. It almost got him in trouble once with Professor Snape and one of the Hufflepuff students. She never asked for details but it was quite a big argument that almost resulted in first flying if Professor Sprout didn’t intervene. (Y/N) didn’t know him yet at the time, still a little preoccupied in finding Jacob.
So, she didn’t know why Talbott is suddenly so secretive. She was used to him being blunt. Never once did he left her wondering about his intentions so it was an alarming change.
Charlie was different, however, he can be quite confrontational but not to a point where he would start a fight. Not as hot-headed and not the kind person to explode when backed to a corner. Gryffindor, a house filled with boiling water, has a few members that simmer.
And Charlie was one of the few that simmer, so when he started avoiding her, she was taken aback and hurt. Despite this, she approached him and asked if there was a problem but the only response he gave was an excuse and a red face
Arrgh! How frustrating! She huffed and shifted to her side, closing her eyes,  despite knowing that sleep was too far away for her to grasp.
(Y/N) was alone this time as she walked around the Forest. The sun high up telling her that it was one in the afternoon. This place doesn’t look so bad in the day, it was even close to being peaceful before a twig snapped behind her.
Alarmed and so used to being attacked, turned around with her wand out and threw a hex where the sound came from.
Talbott, surprised, dodged with grace. The hex hitting the ground with a bang, and (Y/N) suddenly realized what she had done.
“Talbott! I’m so sorry, I thought you were someone else!”
“Thankfully I’m not.” He said with that flat voice she was used to hearing. “I saw you walking down here, and since I’m a Prefect it’s my job to tell you this is a bad idea.”
“I-”
“Especially when it’s related to cursed vaults.” He added with a bite and she cringed suddenly remembering rumors regarding the Forbidden Forest.
“Sorry, I just want some fresh air.” Talbott lifted a brow and she sighed. “Hogsmeade is too much of a crowded place to think.”
“It’s dangerous but I understand. People can sometimes be overwhelming.” He looked straight ahead and walked and (Y/N) took this as a chance to keep going.
They walked in silence, the wind was cold but they were warmed under the light of the sun and there’s no perfect weather for a walk than today.
When Talbott suddenly stopped and started lifting a hand in front of him to stroke the air, (Y/N) was left confused. What is he doing?
Talbott aware of her stare gave one answer. “Thestrals.”
She said nothing more. (Y/N) only looked at the empty space, looking solemn.
Talbott sighed again, tired of thinking that sighing was becoming a habit these days. He stopped petting the thestral, who huffed, to face (Y/N) with an expression she couldn’t read.
“Do you want to try?”
(Y/N)’s eyes thought about it before nodding, giving Talbott a small smile before walking towards him, hesitant that she might accidentally offend or bump the creature she couldn’t see.
To her surprise, Talbott held out his hand, a silent offering to guide her and she took it. He gently held her hand until they stopped in the middle of the space and she heard the hooves, a couple of neighs, and the flapping of wings.
(Y/N) was nervous but she trusts Talbott. He was a good person despite what the others see him as. Even him, she thought sadly. She appreciates his honesty, a cool glass water in a field of sugar-coated lies.
Talbott moved his hand to her wrist and lifted it up. Suddenly she felt something solid in the air and figured that it was the thestral’s head.
“This one is old, he’s been pushing carriages for a long time.” He said as he removed his hand from her wrist. “He’s tired.”
(Y/N) felt the breath of the horse on her face as she repeated the same stroking motion. “Thank you.” She muttered towards the horse and knowingly towards her bird friend.
“I stand by to what I said about the Forbidden Forest. I have a bad feeling about this place and you shouldn’t just come in and come out even if it’s in the middle of the day.”
(Y/N) was silent, a little sad and it showed but took it as a serious matter really needed to be addressed. “But...” He trailed off and she turned her head to look at him.
He wasn’t staring at her but on the ground with hands in his pockets, looking somewhat shy.
“But I also said that I understand the need of being away from people. So if you want-”
(Y/N) waited. She didn’t know what she was waiting for but she did anyway.
“Then ask someone to accompany you. Maybe Hagrid, he knows his way best around here. Don’t be stupid and don’t go alone. Merlin forbid you heed my warning.”
Feeling cheeky so suddenly, she grinned. “You know me too well Talbott, someone might think of us as friends.”
“We aren’t friends!”
Charlie sat on the fountain in the Courtyard, his leather bookcase with him as sketched one of his latest fascinations in a worn out sketchbook. A little too distracted to see (Y/N) approaching, hands holding a box behind her back.
“Hey, Charlie...”
Like a doe startled in the woods, Charlie jumped. It took seconds for him to close his sketchbook and shove it in his bookcase. (Y/N) felt like she walked in on something private and she sheepishly looked down.
“Hey... (Y/N). Do you need anything?” That was the first non-excuse he said to her in weeks and she could have instantly burst into tears if she didn’t hold it back.
“Actually no, I’m here to give you something.”
Charlie confused and a little curious waited and (Y/N) put the box into view. “What for?”
“It’s to make it up to you. For whatever I did.” She rubbed the back of her neck feeling foolish, she felt like she’s buying Charlie’s forgiveness and she wished that he doesn’t see it that way.
Unbeknownst to (Y/N), Charlie thought very far from it. Guilt took over the boy again and he lowered his head in shame as he looked down at the box in his hand. It was a small maroon box wrapped with a golden ribbon that was slightly crooked and uneven.
It was so childish of him to avoid (Y/N) all of a sudden. Feeling undeserving of the gift and (Y/N)’s friendship.
“I- You did nothing wrong (Y/N), I swear. It’s just me...”
Oh for a second there she thought that he might not have liked the gift she gave him. But with Charlie’s admission got her wondering what it was that pushed Charlie away, if it wasn’t her then what?
Still, she wanted to give her support in whatever it was and guilt ate Charlie up more than usual.
“It’s okay Charlie-”
“No! It’s not! You didn’t deserve that, I was just being a twat. I just have a lot on my mind...”
(Y/N) thought that she heard that before but can’t remember when.
“Yeah, you kinda were.” And Charlie felt like tearing himself into pieces then and there and be swept by the wind when he felt (Y/N) mess up his red hair. “But you’re my twat. It takes a lot more than ignoring me to keep me away.”
“I can see that.” He chuckled.
“Then stop sulking and open the box already.”
Heart a little lighter and freckled filled cheeks flushed, Charlie pulled the ribbon loose and opened the lid of the box to find a small silver dragon pin attached to a black cushion. It had two small rubies where its eyes are and he couldn’t help but gasp.
“Melin (Y/N), where did you get this? This amazing!” A smile bloomed on his handsome face and (Y/N) couldn’t help but grin with pride.
“I’m glad you like it.”
Charlie, despite the gift and the air cleared, he still couldn’t get rid of the remaining self-accusation. Instead of wallowing in it, he pushed it aside and decided to make it up to (Y/N).
“Hey, (Y/N)?”
“Yeah Charlie?”
“Let’s grab a few sweets at Honeydukes. My treat.”
And (Y/N) couldn’t stop smiling.
Everything went well than expected. Charlie was talking to her again and Talbott went back to his blunt self and everyone settled down in their own normal routine.
Normal routine meaning: Finding out who R is, figuring where Jacob went or if he’s working for R, helping Professor Rakepick, and breaking cursed vaults.
So it was really a packed year filled with surprises. The Yule Ball was coming up and it became to most talked about topic at Hogwarts and even among her friends. She was as excited to see what it was and what the event will bring her.
In celebration for the coming ball, Jae had invited everyone at Hogsmeade. A group activity that escalated into tradition. They laughed, and joked, and shared stories that got Tonks laughing so hard she got butterbeer coming out of her nose which resulted in more laughter.
As she talked to Penny and Andre about her dress there was two boys sitting across from her, a tad bit stiff and uncomfortable.
“So,” Charlie said, hesitant before continuing, “Are you... gonna attend the ball?”
Talbott’s expression changed with distaste at the thought. “Sadly, I have to. It’s inconvenient when you have other important things to do.”
Charlie grabbed his glass and drank for a moment to think. “Who do you plan on going with?” He asked, feeling a little short since the Yule Ball’s date was announced.
Talbott observed Charlie, not missing the boy’s irritation buried deep behind his soft features. “I haven’t thought about it.” Clipped and short, revealing less than what Charlie would have liked. He wants to keep it that way. “You?”
“I have one in mind but I haven’t asked her yet.” Charlie was now aware of how heavy his glass is and placed it back down on the wooden table.
“I wish you the best of luck.”
“You too.”

Kralingse Plas, Ant Fox
This painting is part of the 'Winter Form and Juncture' collection published in January 2016. These pieces have been 6 years in the making, photos I took in January 2009 on my first morning in Rotterdam when I woke and ventured out to look at the my new surroundings. Lake Kralingse Plas had frozen over completely for the first time in 18 years. I watched as the sun came up over and hit the frozen forms with the complete spectrum of colours. Originally, I set out to work within the Carvaggio colour set however this has metamorphosed as the paintings have developed. This canvas piece is finished in acrylic to add depth and texture. It's one of my favourites, I hope you like it!
