The last ride we made to Zanskar with our guests through mighty Shinku la was in December 2022. A short 3 day excursion we made in the Lungnak valley with a crispy short hike to Phuktar monastery, the ancient marvel of Zanskar. We have been waiting patiently to resume our tours and treks in Zanskar for this summer. We expect the Shinku la/Shingo la to open by April 2nd week for vehicular movement. Do join us for an immersive experiential Jeep Safari to this remote land. Ask us to know more. . . #zanskar #gonborangjon #zangkhar #zahar #shinkula #shingola #lungnak #lungnakvalley #phuktar #phuktarmonastery #phuktal #explorewithhippieinhills #remote #ladakh #kurgiakh #purne #ancient #shangrila #theforbiddenkingdom #indianhimalayas #westernhimalayas #exploration #travel #dekhoapnadesh #incredibleindia #hippieinhills (at Zanskar, India) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqM3unlu6I1/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

the phuktal gompa monastery in kashmir is built around a natural cave situated on a cliff of lugnak valley. the cave itself is thought to have served as a shelter for monks - in particular, the sixteen arhats - before the monastery was built around it ~2,500 years ago. today, it's home to 70 monks and a monastic school.

***
Although Zanskar is traditionally known as "land of religion", monasteries are less numerous than in central Ladakh. What it lacks in numbers, Zanskar makes up for in the ancient and impressive structures of its gompas. Reaching Phuktal Monastery is difficult as it is only accessible on foot. However, it is a photographer's delight as the gompa is built on a cliff and the main worship halls are built inside a cave. There is an intricate network of wooden ladders and platforms that monks and visitors use to reach the gompa. Even though there is little data on the foundation and history of Phuktal Monastery, some paintings in the gompa are identical in style to those in Alchi. Phuktal was an important religious center in Zanskar. Part of Phuktal gompa was damaged by heavy snowfall in 2010.

~Phuktal Monastery or Phuktal Gompa, is a Buddhist monastery located in the remote Lungnak Valley in south-eastern Zanskar, in the Himalayan region of Ladakh, in Northern India. It is one of the only Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh that can still be reached only by foot. Supplies to the monastery are brought on horses, donkeys, and mules in the warmer months, and in the frozen winters, they are transported through the frozen Zanskar River.

The magnificent Phuktal Monastery, also known as Phuktal / Phugtal Gompa is a Buddhist Monastery located in a remote Himalayan region of Zanskar, Ladakh, Northern India. What’s interesting about it is that it’s one of the very few monasteries in the Himalayan region that can only be reached on foot  The Phuktal Gompa owes its legacy to powerful and renowned scholars and teachers who resided in the cave, around which the monastery has been built, and has for long been a place for retreat, meditation, learning, and teaching. This is reflected in its name Phuktal, which is derived from Phukthal, made up of Phuk meaning 'cave', and Tal or Thal meaning 'at leisure' in the endangered Zangskari dialect of the Tibetic languages. An alternate spelling of Phuktal is Phukthar, where Thar means 'liberation'. Hence, the name Phuktal means 'the cave of leisure' or 'the cave of liberation'. The Phuktal Monastery is built around a natural cave, which is believed to have been visited by numerous sages, scholars, translators, and monks around 2,550 years ago. The remote location of the monastery was ideal for monks looking for peace and solitude to meditate. And now, it is no different for travellers looking for the same. #travel #wanderlust #phugtal #phuktal #monastery #zanskar #roadtrip #hiking #trekking #travelgram #instablogger #ladakh #mountains #ss #saurabh #sabikhi #saurabhsabikhi #blogger #travelblogger #photographer #naturelovers #myths #incredible #india #architecture #beautiful #travelgoals #throwback #latergram #travelgram

An 8-Hour Walk to Get Groceries: This Monastery is so Remote That Almost No One Has Heard About It
Tumblr media
The Phuktal monastery is the epitome of monks living high up in the mountains, detached from the rest of the world. From the nearest village, it is an 8-hour walk through high mountain passes of the Greater Himalayas to reach this isolated and spectacular monastery, nestled precariously on a cliff-edge in the remote region of Zanskar in India.
