          he looks confused for just a second, as if he actually has no idea what she’s talking about, but that expression quickly shifts into something a little more incredulous, then thoughtful, and eventually settles on a very small, coy smile. his face flushes as he averts his gaze from his niece, lifting a hand to run his fingers needlessly through his hair, rubbing awkwardly at his opposite bicep.

          “i, uh–i’m glad you think so, kiddo,” he shrugs, carmine hues finally drifting back to meet bright, warm silver, “i really care about him. and he cares about me. he’s good for me, ruby. i know everything is crazy right now, and it’s a weird time for something like this, but… i didn’t mean to… fall in love with him. it just happened.”

          “it’s... a lot to take in.” marlais says, leaning against the balcony of the tower. he looks out over beacon before him, remembering as if it were only yesterday when the entire place was in shambles. he can remember seeing the kingdom and the grounds soaked in blood, filled with terrified civilians and broken students. he’d wanted answers then, and now he has them, years later and so far from a student that he’s a headmaster now.

    the doctor’s barely opened the door and started on his bullshit before coco’s pushing past, earning a disgruntled hey! from behind her. it doesn’t break her stride, which goes across the room, all the way to the makeshift gurney where ruby is. 

   ‘ are you okay, ’ she asks, breathless, as if ruby’s qualified to answer right this second. coco doesn’t care, just throws her arms around ruby and hugs her, careful not to bruise her ribs any more than they already are (she’s not that stupid). ‘ i’m so sorry, ’ mumbled into the other girl’s shoulder, ‘ this is all my fault, rubes, i should’ve known those guys—i should’ve just known. i’m so, so sorry, kiddo. i ... how are you feeling? ’

YEAH HELLO? SHI! EVERY SINGLE MUSE YOU TOUCH IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! You breathe so much life into your characters, strumming at heart strings like a harp! I love every single character you've played, even ones I know nothing about. NOT TO MENTION THAT YOU YOURSELF? FUCKING FANTASTIC!! ruby / pyrrha.

shipping ruby is hard for me in general because, idk, i know she’s not a baby or innocent in a naive way but i’ve never really seen romance on her agenda. imagining her with a crush on pyrrha is cute.

ruby / penny.

ruby and penny’s real adorable. i loved the chibi episode with the fireflies. not entirely sure about penny’s arc but i have mostly positive thoughts on it. i think the dynamic heralds a lot of chaos which i enjoy.

ruby / jaune.

l/ancaster in general is like, an okay ship for me. but platonically it’s big brain. love that. chaotic best friends. we never see the girl / boy best friend dynamic without it getting soiled with weird comphet ideals anymore. i want to see this more often.

the winter solstice in mistral was approaching. ren could feel it in their bones, could see it in the winter trees, recognise the specific herbs and flowers that only grew during this time. it was approaching faster than they anticipated, too fast for ren to fend off with their clothes alone. they might need to invest in a cloak of some kind if they already couldn’t handle the weather. it was ironic how badly they handled the cold, considering their draconic heritage. fire they could make, easily, had set the room’s tinder alight themselves, but they still needed to huddle closer to it, swathed with a blanket covering their shoulders. ren had brought their knees to their chest when ruby found them, patting their side to usher ruby a little closer to the fire, setting down drinks in front of them. they murmured a quiet thank you as they reached out for the mug. both had been charged with setting down their stuff while jaune and nora brought up food from the bottom floor. it was the first time in a while they weren’t camping out under the stars.

          he seems to brace himself against the question briefly, steeling himself for the attempt at trying to find an answer. regret is something that qrow branwen is far too intimate with at this point, something that he welcomes like an old friend - that he finds himself sharing the room with more often than not. what a sad way to live. but he doesn’t know anything else - doesn’t have an option, he supposes. eventually, pink hues shift to meet silver and qrow shrugs. “only tha’ i didn’ know what she were doin’ ‘fore it was too late. i should’a stopped her, should’a tried ta help her. but. i couldn’t. an’... well, here we are.”

          “pfft–no. i call him lucky charms because he’s a walkin’ lucky charm, and it’s a cute nickname. initially i wanted to annoy him with it, but he just kinda rolled with it and it stuck.”
