Dumping PC Genjin 3 (PC Engine HuCard; JP version of TurboGrafx-16 "Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure" with a Sanni Cart Reader V5, and a PCE/TG-16 Adapter board, and running the dumped ROM in the emulator "ares" on PC.
Session: https://youtu.be/3Rvp4iV2Ls0
Had been trying to dump the prequel, PC Genjin 2 (JP version of "Bonk's Revenge"), but it turned out that card was just dead--wouldn't run in my PC Engine Duo-R, either. : PP (But it's okay, I've got Bonk's Revenge on the Gate of Thunder 3-in-one Turbo Duo Super CD-ROM. ^_ ^)
The 16 other cards I wanted to dump were fine, whew. I've only had one other HuCard die on me over the years.

PC Genjin 2 (PS3) - session 1
(Not the version I'm playing, like the label design though : )

The colors are vibrant and the sprite work delectable.
Eat a small piece of meat--not a big one--and you transform into...

Cute baby girl Bonk ("PC Beauty") was replaced in the US release by Crackhead Bonk! ; P
Tumblr media
Three years ago I played about halfway through the US version, Bonk's Revenge, and had forgotten about cute Bonk! It was the version on the Turbo Duo's "3-in-1" Gate of Thunder pack-in disc, although actually it was 4-in-1 because it has Bomber Man as a hidden game! The collection has a special Bonk game select menu!

"Attack power is doubled," according to Google Translate of the JP PS3 version's in-game manual on PC Beauty!

Her kiss--close-up or at a distance--stuns!
Tumblr media
Her dive-bonk blows the enemies away!
Tumblr media
If she dive-bonks the ground, it paralyzes even midair enemies!
Tumblr media
You only get to be PC Beauty for about 14 seconds at a time! I want to be her all the time! Why doesn't she have her own game??
Even in the early going here there's been a fair amount of precision platforming, and dive-bonking the small/moving enemies is a bit tricky and kind of a pain to have to do all the time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second boss encounter, though, is delightful: big, weird, well-animated, and sporting a fun cycle of creative transformations and attacks--and a big hit area that even a clunky junker like me can chain-dive-bonk and feel cool!

*("Boohoo!")*
I want a Bonk Boss Rush game!
This Japanese "PC Engine Archives" PSN Store version has separate regular and turbo buttons.

Bonk’s Revenge (GB)
GameFAQs credits the developer as "AI," who had done the NES port of Bonk's Adventure the year before (1993 in Japan, January 1994 in the States, the NES's last year--the cart for that now goes for four figures on eBay). In those years AI were mostly doing a lot of console ports. They went on to do, among many other things, four Bomberman games, each on a different Nintendo platform. In their later years--ending in 2013--they focused on Nintendo handhelds.
The game's cartridge sticker and title screen, though, credit just "Red," which would be short for Red Company--also on the title screen of PC Genjin 2, even though GameFAQs credits a small company called Mutech for that one. (They credit Hudson for Bonk's Adventure on both GB and TG16, and for Bonk 3.)
Mobygames lists Special Thanks to "People of Hudson & Red and you!"

Left: Bonk’s Revenge, from the 3-in-1 pack-in disc (Turbo Duo)
Right: PC Genjin 2 (PS3 JP, port of PC Engine original)
On the continue screen, Bonk’s Revenge seems to show a limit to the number of continues, whereas the Japanese version, PC Genjin 2, does not.

PC Genjin 2 (aka Bonk’s Revenge)
From the “PC Engine Archives” section of the PS3 JP PSN store.
The series’ Japanese title, PC Genjin, is a pun on the name of the console on which it appeared, the PC Engine. “PC” stands for the quasi-scientific-species-name-sounding “Pithecanthropus Computerurus,” like you might see in articles about dinosaurs and stuff, and “Genjin” is Japanese for “original man” or “primitive man” or “cave man.”
GameFAQs, lists "Mutech," not Red Company, as the name of the developer of the game (they credit Hudson on Bonk 1 and 3).
