spoiler alert: yes i prefer all the pretty female non li side characters to any actually available (either male or female) li. all day any day. live laugh love michelle nguyen, diana, ingrid, and briar daly. also dee dee but she's mc's family so i'll have to make a different character for her, sorry andre.

more: yes, she's a gyaru, and even in professional lawyer mode she'll still at the very least wear light gal makeup. she's been one since the "glam queens" — her, court, di, and aisha — first formed, and she even modeled as one before she took on her current job as a lawyer. she started a fwb (but with actual friendship) type relationship with diana in college that ended once diana established herself as straight and fell for skip, and again on the trip to vegas after her poor friend started to reconsider not only her supposed love for skip but also her sexuality.

more: she, jax and adrian are in a polyfidelity relationship, they're all in love with each other and no one else. she's an amateur dancer and has been since age 15. after the world discovered vampires, she's been dressing almost impossibly bright and poppy, partly to defy the stereotype that all vampires are goth and partly in memory of her best friend lily and the contrast she'd have with her. she's the oldest of seven — her mother really wanted a boy but only after the birth of her youngest she got told that, as the bloodkeeper, she's unable to bear biological sons. fortunately one of raida's many siblings came out as a trans boy, to their mother's glee.

more: before realizing one can be attracted to men and assume a masculine role in a relationship, ashley frequently asked themself "do i want to be the prince or be with him?" at one point, they were secretly in love with luke, but since he's straight and ruby also likes him, they kept it a secret from everyone. their mother, carolina varela, is argentine, and ever since they learned that they've felt a desire to connect more with the culture — especially with the food, you'll frequently find them eating a choripan, empanada or milanesa de pollo.

more: growing up with feminine interests in an almost female-only family with maia, anita and dee dee means mirah has always seen herself as "one of the girls" even before realizing she really is one. her parents try their best to support her but are still quite behind, and so they thought that as a woman, she has to marry a man. she's had to prove multiple times that she likes women and wants to marry (f!)kamali... a woman that ended up cheating on her due to wanting "a real woman" and inadvertently leading her back into the arms of her ex boyfriend from college, the only person she's ever loved that truly loves her for all of her.

more: despite no longer identifying as female, mandy still likes wearing dresses and full glam, partly to blend in with the crowd and partly in memory of perdita (yes, they frequently steal from her). at least that's what he always says. they're always lamenting that perdita never got to meet their true self, since she went missing before mandy realized they weren't cis, but part of him thinks she must know anyway. they're frequently described as "having the soul of a divorced wine mom" by classmates due to their personality and style, and he likes to disagree with them, but deep down he knows they're all right.

6. high school story (au?, more of an oc than a mc, i only remember i created her alongside an alternate mc from the one i usually play as)

more: for a girl that looks and dresses like elle woods' daughter, darlene sure has a secret geeky side and is frequently found discussing one piece with myra and the rest of the gamer clique. they've also got a passion for fashion, having helped giselle find her style at the same time koh helped her medically transition and later working on costumes for the theatre club. she, giselle and koh (and cameron, as of spring quarter) might be quite the odd squad at first glance, but the four have grown to be inseparable, and darlene finds herself spending more time with her girlfriend and their "third wheels" than with her classmates.

7. distant shores

age: 25

gender: gnc cis male

pronouns: she/he. it'd be just she/her, but she knows people from the golden age of piracy won't understand the concept of pronouns not equaling gender so she just lets them call her he/him. so far the only person she's tried to explain it to (the pronouns, not the gender non conformity - that's an open secret among the crew) is edward, who still doesn't quite fully understand it yet but tries the hardest he possibly can to support her.

more: fortunately for elias, being a relatively experienced actor means she's far less likely to accidentally reveal her time traveling secret. unfortunately for her, having time traveled to a far less progressive era means she's also forced to change the way she dresses and acts. early in her stay at the poseidon's revenge, charlie spotted her rifling in the former's closet to see if there were any dresses and came very close to disciplining her, until elias admitted she prefers men and had no perverted intentions at all... and that's the first time she ever confided in her sexuality and identity to a member of the crew that isn't edward.

8. desire and decorum

full name: pamela harper, née pamela foredale, née née pamela liu

age: 23

gender: cis female

pronouns: she/her

sexuality: it's not something she dwells on or likes to. even before annabelle introduced her to the concept of not being straight, she's known she's what the modern world would label as pan. she feels her heart has no boundaries on things like birth sex or gender identity, she loves everyone and can be w anyone, but she's too in love with luke to think like that about anyone that isn't him.

love interests: briar daly (formerly), luke harper (currently)

occupation: countess of edgewater

more: before traveling to edgewater, pamela wanted to become either a singer like her mother or a baker like briar's mother. she used to have a relationship with briar that one can only describe as "practicing to become wives" in every aspect, with briar of all people being pamela's first time. unfortunately briar really saw it as just practicing, but fortunately they stayed best friends after their failed relationship. her mother gave her the name "劉瑷菡" (liu aihan) but deep down she's always preferred pamela (or pam), even before she knew her father gave her that name.

9. ride or die

full name: maya minobe (美濃部魔夜)

age: 18

gender: trans female

pronouns: she/her

sexuality: lesbian

love interest: ingrid (yes, ingrid. it's technically colt since that's whose romance route i played, but i'd love for her to be a li and so maya dates her in my verse. in between prom and graduation they form a friendship that quickly turns into romantic feelings, but there's definitely been mutual pining and lesbian panic from both sides even before ingrid swallowed her pride and became actual friends with maya)

occupation: n/a

more: she started transitioning at age 15 and originally picked the nickname "kokoro" from a kanji in her deadname (健心), but eventually landed on maya, meaning "magical night". she used to dress in between dark academia and gloomy coquette, but almost as soon as she met the mercy park crew she changed her style to a mix of romanba gyaru and 2000s party girl, dying her hair blonde, learning to do her makeup and acting a lot more bubbly and fun. thanks to her new style, personality and pink ride, she's earned the epithet "racing barbie" by members of the racing scene and rival gangs tracking down the mpc.

Finally finished The Duchess Affair. I rate it a ehh/10

It started off a strong note, I liked the sapphic self discovery of mc and a f!Nat Pippin. The fact that not only is the affair forbidden because mc is married and the class differences that stand between them, they're both women, which makes it even more poignant. But then all the smut scenes kind of wore me down. It didn't feel like a true connection was built between the mc and the LI. It felt like the only thing keeping them interested in each other is the fact that it was forbidden.

I don't really mind smut, especially if it's written well, and it was written well in TDA, but the writers tend to have a hard time writing a smut book and balancing the smut with actual genuine connection between the characters. That balance can be hard to achieve with the usual 16 chapters. Which is why they tend to cut some of the smut out of the plot driven books so they can focus on plot, but since most smut books are 21 or so chapters, they really don't have an excuse. I know this complaint isn't new or original but I guess I want to reiterate that it's not the fact that it's a smut book that gets on my nerves, it's just that I feel most of pb writers are either not very good writers or are just lazy and only care about pleasing their readers that are really only here for the smut.

And then the whole fight between mc and Nat when mc was worried about saving her sister's reputation really irked me. When Nat saw how worried mc was she immediately proposition sex and then got mad when mc rejected her. Even choosing the more polite dialogue, Nat gets mad and storms off.

We get an apology but then immediately mc's husband discovers the affair and the duel takes place. The teary love confessions and heart wrending angst would have been much more powerful if there had been any connection or any substance to mc and Nat's relationship. Sure a lot of things Nat was saying was pretty and swoon worthy, but for the entire book Nat is so one dimensional with no real personality besides "her charming, mischievous smile" and her experienced worldly woman vibe, it made all the love confessions fall flat at the end.

I feel like if they had just took out the scene where mc and Nat watched the deer fucking and getting off riding on a horse and made the 2 scenes diamond scenes to just talk and connect, it would have made it a lot better. But then again watching animals mating isn't a kink of mine, so what do I know?

Choices: Desire and Decorum

You guys...I've fallen in the rabbit hole of becoming entranced with the mobile game, choices. It's gotten to the point that I am officially a VIP subscription member. I have no shame to admit such a thing though that is NOT what I am here to discuss.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the lovely series known as Desire and Decorum? This series is written to pure perfection and I can't keep myself from thinking how good this would be as a television series. Especially if they went with Miss (Annabelle) Parsons storyline. The way they execute their relationship in a time period were same-sex relationships were improper and carried severe consequences if people were to know the truth.

Anyway, that is all I share as I haven't finished book 2 just yet. I am team Annabelle all the way. Fictional characters must stop making my heart yearn for someone I can't have. Sob sob.

Update: This will contain slight spoilers if you have not read any of Desire and Decorum.

You mean to tell me that Annabelle Parsons has the belief that never marrying me is worst than her fate of possible death? MC has gained the pure term of perfection amongst a human being. I am in love.

So, here is my personnal headcannons of pairings of former LIs:

TRR/TRH/TRF:

My MC married Liam.

I would have loved to see Maxwell and Hana end up together, they are both so sweet, and she's responsible to balance his goofiness while he knows when to have fun to balance her seriousness.

Drake and Olivia spent the whole series teasing each other, mainly with whiskey and daggers in silver plates. I think they are both rough diamonds with a softer heart, and it would have been nice to see them date.

If my MC had married Drake (which I wanted to do on my second walkthrough but I also decided she would not be a romantic but a roughless ambitious and she ended up marrying royalty because that's where the power is) I could have seen Olivia and Liam together. They don't strike me as a perfect pair, but they've known each other for long and were each other's only friend for a while (except for Drake in Liam's case).

Endless Summer

Idk what needs to be said but... Jake x Estella, and Sean x Quinn.

Renegade soldier boy and aventurer assassin girl? Perfect pairing.

Sweet boy scout and nice shy girl? Perfect pairing.

Desire and Decorum

Luke Harper was paired with one of Miss Parsons' little sisters and that was great.

I think Prince Hamid would have been a great husband for the other sister.

As for Miss Parson I think, had she been interested in men, she could have been married to Ernest Sinclaire. They are both headstrong and difficultely giving their trust. Since she is not interested in men, she could have married Mr Chambers to stop her family from pestering her into marriage.

Distant Shores

I've got to admit I could have imagined Edward and Charlie together. They had chemistry.

Red Carpet Diaries

Seth and Teja together for work and for life!

Victoria Fontaine, I don't see her married to anyone. And I don't see Matt Rodriguez marrying anyone except MC?? Idk. Maybe with Addison?

Hunter? Single for life. If he can't get with MC, no one can get with him or something.

The Crown and the Flame

My Kenna married Raydan.

Dom? Oh come on with Rose! I was so sad she didn't come back in book 2 and 3!

Tevan would go well with Annelise I think. They have common interests (fashion, beauty, but also culture)

I could see Val ending with Diavolo. They are both ruthless. But there's something off with their vibes idk, it's not a soulmates pairing.

The Elementalists

Shreya and Griffin would go together. They're both extroverts, popular, and enterprising. They would be the kind of couple where he is out of the house half of the year, trekking and doing charity work on the other side of the world, when she's at home running her business/also on the other side of the world but not the same, to run her business.

I could picture Beckett and Aster together. They both have this shyness/precaution to them...

Wake the Dead

Like in Endless Summer we've got the tough LIs and the nice LIs, but here they are 5 so it complicates pairings. Also here I don't think pairing the tough together would work, smae with the nice.

Mine ended with Shanon but I could see her with Eli. He needs her knowledge and strategy, she needs his strength and bravery.

Angel would end up alone I think. Not everyone is cpaable of following her pace.

I don't see the girl from the gritty people who kill zombies and change their names, whose name I forgot, settling, much less when it would mean show her men a soft side of her and maybe make her lose her grip on them.

Troy? idk tbh. He seemed kinda bland to me.

Top 10 Choices MCs

1. The Heist Monaco MC: the mastermind behind stealing the big heist while defeating an obnoxious and self-absorbed villain and leaving Monaco unscathed (at least in my playthrough lol) deserves first place;

2. Crimes of Passion MC: I only played book one, but I love MC's personality, backstory, how good they areat their job and how they develop a good partnership (and romance) with Trystan;

3. The Crown and The Flame - Kenna Rys: she belongs to PB, but the woman is a one hell of a warrior and queen;

4. Ride or Die MC: she went from naive nerdy teenager to strong and smart young woman who defeats a corrupt cop and I was living for it!

5. It Lives Beneath MC: This MC faced so many traumatic situations and barely made out alive while taking down a bizarre secret society being so young. The least they deserve is to be on top 5;

6. The Royal Romance/Heir/Finale MC: at times, she seems to be just a not so smart character who often relies on her charm, but she is pretty tough for facing a sexual assault attempt followed by public humiliation, several near death experiences and temporarily losing custody of her child without a single visit to a therapist. Unreal? Yes. But kudos to her;

7. Bloodbound MC: at first glance, MC seems a bit fragile if compared to everyone else, but eventually she becomes the one who would save everyone. Including herself;

8. Mother of The Year MC: she lived my teenhood nightmare, had two jobs and still found time be super mom and three hot potential dates while fighting custody battle against that white trash of ex husband.

9. Save The Date MC: I love her sense of your humour and that she had a backbone to quit a job she hated to pursue a new career;

10. Desire & Decorum MC: I have mixed feelings about her because the writing team itself didn't help much. She does her best to be accomplished lady, fights tooth and nail to prove she's the rightful heir and to show who Duke Richards really is, but at the same time she runs away to the village she grew up and stays there with her friends and LI as if she doesn't have huge issues to solve 🤷 she's on the top 10 because she endured an engagement to Duke Richards and helped put him in jail, just for that she deserves this spot.

Here are my top 10 favorites - in no order - no, I lied. The first 4 are my all-time favorite; the remaining 6 round it out.

Desire & Decorum - Honestly, this is probably the one that I liked - as is - the most. PB did a lovely job with this, and while Book 3 didn't rock my world, it wasn't horrible. It's been too long since I replayed this.

Open Heart - I was late to the OH train. I thought it looked so Grey's Anatomy (and it was in many ways) that I had no interested. Well, that changed, lol. Book 1 was wonderful, and I did not hate Book 2... Book 3 was a hate crime... but it still had its moments, and it's where I fell for Tobias Carrick, so I'm giving a tiny pass. The best part of this story? The characters - main and supporting - were all so good and great canvasses for creators to build on.

Crimes of Passion - I put off reading 1 for so long (foolish), and how I loved it! Well written, arguably the best LI in Choices history, a badass MC, great storyline... freaking loved it. 2 was meh, but not totally dreadful, so it did not ruin it for me.

Wake the Dead - Another story I had no intention of reading (was not a zombie girl!) and became obsessed with. The story went off track a little, and the ending was rushed, but overall a solid story with great characters.

A Very Scandalous Proposal - Not terribly popular, but I really enjoyed this. Simon/Ava were wonderful LIs, but Nigel was one of the best BFFs in the Choices catalog. I really enjoyed this.

A Courtesan of Rome - Another I wasn't going to play (notice a trend here), and I simply loved it.

The Unexpected Heiress - This is such an underrated Choices story. I loved the MC and her late sister. Strong, intelligent women who did not take second place to their LIs and centered on sisterly love. Loved it.

Guinevere - Sure, there were historical inaccuracies and such (I expect these things), but it was a great take on the Arthurian legend. Very well-written and compelling romance.

The Royal Romance 1 and 2 - This was my intro to Choices - so it will always have a special place in my heart. A great escapist story with some top-tier LIs. I just wish we could have gone back to NY lol

The Freshman Series (except the Junior) I love this story... It's simple, yet it's not. This is when PB still did multiple LIs with unique storylines. It was a sweet throwback - but the Junior was just dreadful. lol

There are some stories I think may end up on this list, but I have not gotten to read them yet (such as Veil of Secrets, Laws of Attraction, maybe It Lives? But I'm going with what I've read so far! 😊
