Saw you talking about disney movies! Have you spoken about Tarzan yet? ❤️🥰
I havent but, again, this is one of my favourite movies.
One of my first memories is of this movie. We went to go see it in cinema and I remember the vine scene so vividly because we saw it in cinema.
Let's start with the opening. The music is so good. I think it was one of the first to move away from being a musical into having non diajetic music take over for the soundtrack. I think it really fits this film because Tarzans whole thing is about communication. Jane and the professor want to know more about the apes, they want to communicate they want to learn. Tarzan wants to learn to be human he wants to communicate with Jane. The fact they don't sing kind of fits because it means that there's still this barrier. theres still something in the way to stop them from fully understanding each other which, in musicals, we usually see through a song of some sort. The only music we get is when the mother sings (so cute) and when the apes and tantor destroy the camp.
Moving onto the story. Tarzan did not pull any punches. I cant remember Tarzans mothers name karla? But her losing her baby and then tarzan losing his parents to the same leopard? Oh my god. that's so sad and impactful and it bonds them before she even decides to keep him.
Also the fact she makes monkey noises in the beginning. she's still a wild animal at this point. It's only when she goes back that we're given communication access to thee ape world because Tarzan now given that access. It's written in a way that's almost limited in its pov.
When Tarzan gets older obviously theres this gap between human and ape. But it's quite interesting how easy tarzan fills it up. It's kind of showing the wild side of man is always and will always be there. But hes not a bad thing, hes just wild unlike in other interpretations like Jekyll and hyde where the wild side is a bad thing.
I like how they coloured tarzan too. His parents are shown very pale, yet you can see tarzan is darker than them from spending so much time outside. That was a nice detail.
Moving onto Jane. I love Jane. You can tell she's not completely dainty from the offset. Why else would she be in the jungle? But it's interesting how when we first see her she's covered head to toe in the latest London fashion. Then, as the movie goes on, she gets stripped of it. It starts with her shoe, then her glove, then she loses her dress and at the end she's still got some layers but she's more wild than civilised. It's great.
Also tarzan doesnt learn to be human because of jane. Like she is a big part of it, but he also finds out what happens to his parents. Just like he is the missing link for jane, jane is the missing link for tarzan. She is what his parents were, where they came from, what they might have been like, and his search for knowledge is born out of self identity not just because he saw someone pretty and wanted to talk to her.
Jane also, shes not staying with Tarzan at the end because of tarzan alone. This is everything she ever wanted. This is her once in a lifetime opportunity. Tarzan doesn't even know what a kiss is at the end, she knows that, but she stays because she loves him and the life he can give her with the apes than taking their findings back home where she'll never see or do anything like this again
Like I said, she's shed london from her by the end, theres nothing left for her there.
Again, an underrated classic.
