Personal Radio Station
For the longest time, at least 14 years that I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a radio personality. The problem with this is that I never knew how to get into it without being an unpaid/low-paid grunt doing work I don’t want to do.
Now, with the help of an insanely updated internet, I can do just that for free/very little money per month! However, I don’t want to start up a radio station without knowing that I’ll have at least a few people who will listen.
Just to give you an idea of what the station would be playing, I will show you a comprehensive list of just the music in my personal collection. Quite a few of these are actually from compilation albums, and thus I only have a few songs (maximum) for them. Others, however, I have full/nearly-full collections of.

I haven't seen loads of photos yet, but am I the only one feeling a bit underwhelmed by this year's MET gala? the only ones who stood out to me were Zendaya, Rihanna, Cara, Blake (I looove her), Emily Ratajkowski (I loved the colours).. I didn't like any of the Kardashians/Jenners, but I especially hated Kendall's dress (BEST DRESSED?! SERIOUSLY?). I have no idea about how much they respected the dress code though!
So… the Met Gala just happened. And Serena Williams was wearing green and all I could think about was you!
Hi Sarah! I know you won’t see this right away, but the MET Gala was last night. I loved Kendall Jenner’s look because it fit the theme. It was extreme and not something you would expect, but that was the theme; avant garde. I feel like people don’t go for the theme for fear of being judged or whatnot, but that’s the point of the MET Gala. Sorry for the lengthy ask, but I hated seeing people wear basic outfits. What are your thoughts?
Met gala best-dressed/worst-dressed opinions? Also thoughts on the theme?
I know Tay didn’t attend but I’d still love to hear your thoughts on this year’s Met gala!
What was your favourite look from last night’s met gala? I LOVED Lily Aldridge in Ralph Lauren and Balenciaga, she went with the theme and looked gorgeous.
Met gala opinions?? Shame Taylor wasn’t there but we knew that already, Selena and Karlie looked goood, not so sure about some of the others though!
Have you seen the Met Gala pics yet? Why do people not take the one night they are encouraged to be completely kooky?! Why are so many people just wearing nice things it makes me sad :’( Go Rihanna tho
Phew! Hey boos. I’m so behind on Met Gala coverage - it’s been a crazed last few days. I finally had the opportunity tonight to sit down and look through everything.
Here are my high-level thoughts (under the cut!):
Rihanna = Queen of the Met Gala. No one can catch up with her. (Though I wish she had worn thigh high boots instead of the lace ups)
Zendaya killed that theme dead. Her ‘fro hair cut in the style of Rei was inspired. I actually hate the print of her D&G gown, but her hair and make up and presence sells it
Kudos Janelle Monae for going there and sticking to her black/white uniform while doing it
You know that the standards for “committing to the theme” are low when I actually love a Rita Ora look …
Yeeeeesss Cara. Who would have thought she’d make Chanel Couture look alien chic?
Gwyneth’s look was straight up more offensive than any Kardashian/Jenner. You wear THAT to the MET GALA?! I know she thinks she’s too damn cool for everything in life but honestly that obvious lack of effort is disrespectful (BLACK shoes with a PINK dress?!?! ARE YOU SURE YOU’RE A “STYLIST”?). Why even accept (or deserve) an invite if you care -240%???????? LAZY AF I’M SO ANGRY
Emmy Rossum and Carolina Herrera are consistent red carpet magic. Even if it’s not entirely on-theme
I honestly still don’t know if I loved Priyanka’s Ralph Lauren moment. Like does adding a dramatic train to a trenchcoat make it a Met Gala look? Particularly for a Comme Des Garçons-themed Met? But then again … It was RL taking their iconic trench to a whole new level. Still not sure.
Ditto Blake Lively. On the one hand, she’s Blake Lively. On the other hand, I could easily have seen a Kardashian Krew member or Beyonce wearing that gown. Dilemma.
Salma Hayek’s Balenciaga boots saved her look and brought it on-theme. Nice.
So many people looked great but just ignored the theme completely (Elle Fanning, Miranda, Jessica Chastain, Alexa Chung [though she was dull as dishwater and I’m normally not a fan of her style], Diana Kruger [so sad, she has such great style?], Claire Foy, Brie Larson, the list goes on and on). Gisele was a particular disappointment as she was a co-chair of the event. At least Katy attempted to be on-theme (even if she looked a little hot mess-ish)
Lily Collins had an excellent nod to CDG in Giambattista with her hair/makeup (though a tad too literal). Ditto Lena Dunham in Elizabeth Kennedy (weird choice of designer though). Ditto ditto Karlie’s platinum bob, even though her outfit was super dull
Loved the colour of Rose Byrne’s RL gown - a great nod to Kawakubo’s signature red.
There is not a single model who actually looked good. I’m barely giving Lily a pass, at least she tried for the theme
The controversial part that got brought up most above: Kylie. I pay very little attention to their clan because it’s a waste of my time. But bottom line: The gown is gorgeous, despite it being an overdone sheer dress. But Kylie has no red carpet presence and brings no life to it. Waste of a beautiful gown. Even J. Lo (tacky as she can dress) would have at least owned the shiz out of it. Kendall barely wore a dress so I’m not even going to attempt to justify that one.
Was Selena’s red eyeshadow an attempt to make a sweet floral boudoir-inspired Coach gown into “avant garde” territory? Because ………… No. (Her and The Weeknd looked p cute though)
Surprisingly loved:- Dakota Johnson (Gucci)- Zoe Kravitz (OdlR)- Halle Berry (Atelier Versace)- Naomi Watts (Stella McCartney)- Zoey Deutch (Tory Burch)- Lily James (Burberry)- Ruth Negga (Valentino)- Margaret Qualley (Prabal Gurung)
Wanted to love: - Julianne Moore (Calvin Klein) … Those accessories let down a fun dress- Ruby Rose (Burberry) … She’s wayyyy too edgy for that prim and fluffy gown- Lupita Nyong’o (Prada) … I just expected more. The colour is gorge on her, though
There will never be a Zac Posen gown I don’t love (I’m pretending Amy Schumer did not wear one of his designs okay?). Even though it wasn’t on theme Katie Holmes nailed it - and she is someone who rarely ever does. Not the best of the night, but probably her personal best look ever
PHEW!

Legal and ethical considerations
(Source: Edexcel: Creative Media Production | Level 3 Textbook)
Ethical considerations
Being ethical is purely defined as being aware of people’s sensitivities, treating people with respect and courtesy, and working responsibly within the bounds of professional standards in the sector.
Questions to consider include:
Is your production intruding on individual privacy? Is it legitimately in the public’s interest or is the intrusion merely ‘interesting’ to the public?
Are you presenting an individual or their view as a representative of an entire group of people e.g. representation of gender or religious beliefs?
Does your production use hidden microphones or long lens cameras? When is it acceptable to record people without their knowledge?
Does your production include interviews with vulnerable people, e.g. people in hospital? Could this be seen as exploitive?
Does your production use ‘off the record’ information that was given confidently?
Are you making a media production that may offend or insult any user, viewer or listener, particularly if it refers to a minority or specific group of people?
By considering the ethical issues, we can avoid failing to comply with the professional code of practise. If we didn’t follow the professional code of practise, it could have serious implications for a producer, ranging from legal action to being removed from supplier tender invitation lists or loss or reputation and loss of business.
Legal considerations
Considering legal issues simply means that you ensure your production doesn’t break the law.
Laws to consider when making your media production:
Libel law: You could be sued for damages if you publish or broadcast things about a person that are untrue and could defame them.
Discrimination legislation: Discrimination based on race, gender and age are illegal. This means you should consider this when employing staff, cast and crew and the way individuals are portrayed in your production.
Obscenity: You’ll need to have a lawyer check that your production doesn’t break obscenity laws, e.g. the age range of the audience, the time a production is broadcast and where and how it is produced, released or published.
Data protection: Storing certain information about people without their permission is illegal. Through the Freedom of Information Act, they can access any records you hold about them. Alternatively, the Official Secrets Act ensures that any information obtained from journalism cannot be made public. Through a confidentiality clause, you can be prevented from disclosing the information to any other company or person.
An example of defamation and libel in the media: The Wolf of Wall Street (Information found on: http://screenrant.com/insane-reasons-people-sued-movies/?view=all and https://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/dec/01/wolf-of-wall-street-paramount-defamation-lawsuit)
Martin Scorsese’s 2013 film, The Wolf of Wall Street, was hit with a $50 million lawsuit by Andrew Greene. Green worked on the board of directors of Stratton Oakmount and worked alongside Belfort (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), a Wall Street trader who served 22 month in prison. Greene believed that Nicky Koskoff (played by P J Byrne) was based off of him, and feels the film hurt his business as he was displayed as immoral in the film. He stated that they had defamed him. The court are allowed Greene to sue them for libel, but rejected his statement of the film defaming him. DiCaprio was even sent to court to testify for Scorsese. Copyright If you have worked to produce something, e.g. a script or piece of artwork, then it is your intellectual property or IP. This means that if people want to use your product, because it is your IP, they have to obtain permission and pay you the amount agreed for a specified type of use.  Through copyright, it can protect the rights of creators of media production but it does not protect ideas or names and titles, merely the final product.
The “I” lamp in the Disney Pixar logo (Information found on: http://screenrant.com/insane-reasons-people-sued-movies/?view=all)
In 2009, Disney Pixar was hit by a lawsuit from Luxo, the company who created the iconic lamp from the Pixar logo. Due to Pixar releasing a special blu- ray edition of Up which included a toy Luxo lamp.  The case was concluded when Pixar agreed to not sell the Luxo lamp toy and Luxo allowed them to use their iconic lamp.
The Starz TV show: Power (Information found on:http://screenrant.com/hit-tv-shows-sued-ripoffs/?view=all)
50 Cent’s TV shower Power is based around a New York club owner who leads the secret life of being a drug kingpin as well. Desperate to leave the drug business, James St Patrick wants to be with his family. Larry Johnson claims that show was based off of his book, Tribulation of a Ghetto Kid. Johnson is still apparently putting a lawsuit of $200 million to the rapper.
Regulatory Bodies
Office of Communications (Ofcom) -(Information for this section from https://www.ofcom.org.uk/about-ofcom/how-ofcom-is-run)
The communications regulator that regulates television and radio as well as fixed line telecoms and mobiles, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate. This regulator, since it regulates television, will regulate our television show to make sure it abides to the Code of Conduct. Whilst Ofcom consists of a host of small boards that are all part of one big Board (that provides strategic direction for the organisation), it is the Ofcom Content Board that enforces quality and standards for television and radio. They are charged with “championing the viewer, the listener and the citizen”. It splits its work into three tiers. Tier one covers matters concerning: harm and offence, accuracy and impartiality, fairness and privacy. Tier two relates to quantitate matters such as: quotas for independent television production, regional production and original EU/ UK production. Lastly, tier three covers the public service broadcasters; they state that in this instance, Ofcom has particular responsibility for ITV, Channel 4 and Five.
British Academy of Film and Television (BAFTA) -(Information for this section from http://www.bafta.org)
BAFTA helps support, develops and promote the film, television and video games industries. It has a whole section on its website for ‘Supporting Talent’, which includes ‘Breakthrough Brits’, allowing people who are new to the media industry, e.g. directors and actor, to be promoted. Furthermore, the ‘Brits to Watch’ section can allow talented British individuals be introduced to the US film industry.  BAFTA Guru allows those wanting to go into the media to get advice from those experienced in the media industry, e.g. Idris Elba, J.J. Abrams, Natalie Dormer and Eddie Redmayne. Through working with the BAFTA association, we can have our production, The Media Suite, promoted.
Performing Rights Society for Music (PRS) -(Website for regulator is https://www.prsformusic.com/Pages/default.aspx)
This regulator collects and pays royalties to its members when their music is recorded onto any format and distributed to the public, performed or played in public, broadcast or made publicly available for online. This regulatory body is important to The Media Suite as we may want to include music in our production, and if so, will have to consider this regulatory body for the television show.
British Board for Film Classification (BBFC) -(Information for this section is http://www.bbfc.co.uk)
The regulator of the film and video industry in the UK, whilst classifying film and videos in terms of age suitability. The BBFC have a mission to protect the public from harmful content, empower the public to make informed viewing choices and recognise and respect adult freedom of choice within the law. They have two examiners view a film for theatrical release, whilst only one examiner views a DVD and Blu- ray. When rating a production, they consider: discrimination, drugs, horror, dangerous and easily imitable behaviour, language, nudity, sex, and violence.
Film Distributors’ Association (FDA) -(Information for this section is from http://launchingfilms.com)
The company that releases films for UK cinema audiences. The UK’s film, TV and video industries lose £500 million a year due to copyright theft, which equates to a total economic loss to the UK economy of £1.2 billion. Due to this, the FDA safeguards copyright. They have a team of specialist staff who brief and train cinema operators around the UK, backed by an experienced investigative capability which examines all reported incidents, liaises with local law enforcement officers and considers prosecutions as and when appropriate. They also have a rewards scheme and furnish UK cinemas with night vision devices to assist members of staff with their checks (to make sure no one is recording the film) as well as email alerts to highlight film releases considered vulnerable at particular times.
PACT -(Information for this section is from http://www.pact.co.uk)
The UK trade association representing and promoting the commercial interests of independent feature film and television. PACT are responsible for “a framework of principles which govern the way the public service broadcasters do business with independent production companies”.  They, in simple terms, help independent production companies create a name for themselves in the media industry. In fact, the total estimated revenue from international sales of UK TV programming and associated activities continues to grow, with the sectors value coming to a large sum of £1, 284 million. Also, the number of categories in which independent producers won a BAFTA in 2014 totalled to 14. In December 2015, PACT reached an agreement with the BBC, stating that when the BBC formed BBC Studios they would tender 40% of its programming by April 2018. PACT have also launched a report in collaboration with the Ragdoll Foundation to improve children’s TV.
The Broadcasting Entertainment Cinematograph and Theatre Union (BECTU) -(Information for this section is from http://www.bectu.co.uk)
A trade union for people working in broadcasting, film and interactive media. It is a representative for permanently employed, contract and freelance workers. The BECTU have a host of services for people, including cinema staff and helping them with any workplace issues, to Sky workers (be it in a call centre or as an installer) to call in for assistance with any employment issue. Through joining the BECTU, you can check recommended rates, gain a public liability insurance, and one- to- one support.
In conclusion... By considering the legal and ethical considerations, we can ensure that our production still runs, as it won’t be closed down for being illegal and/ or unethical, thus ensuring that we don’t lose business. Through considering the legal and ethical considerations we make sure that we don’t offend anyone with our media product or steal anyone’s ideas; we will adhere to the codes of practise and thus, not be involved in legal action.
