Nvidia benchmarks cast further doubt over RTX 4080 12GB GPU
Nvidia’s RTX 4080 GPU is available in two flavors, as you’re doubtless conscious, and Crew Inexperienced has simply offered some benchmarks that are a place to begin for illustrating the relative efficiency that these graphics playing cards will ship. As flagged up by Overclock3D (opens in new tab) (by way of VideoCardz (opens in new tab)), each the RTX 4080 16GB and the 12GB lower-tier mannequin…

По данным источника, в настоящий момент цены на процессоры Ryzen 5000 в Великобритании выглядят следующим образом:
AMD Ryzen 5 5600X — цена при запуске £289,99 — актуальная цена £245.99 (24 845 руб.);
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X — цена при запуске £428,99 — актуальная цена £354,79 (35 835 руб.);
AMD Ryzen 9 5900X — цена при запуске £529,99 — актуальная цена £450,00 (45 451 руб.);
AMD Ryzen 9 5950X —

Blizzard Confirms WoW Subscriber Base Doubled After Classic Launched
I’m still working on my WoW leveling comparison between Retail and Classic (I know, I know, I KNOW), but there’s now hard evidence that a substantial group of people are logging into WoW to play a version of the game they enjoyed 15 years ago. One of the most common arguments I saw people making before Classic launched — an argument I had a lot of fun discussing with friends, though I didn’t necessarily put a lot of stock in it — was the idea that people would roll Classic characters, immediately encounter the difficulty and pace of the game, and promptly quit again.
Turns out, nobody should’ve worried. Classic is popular enough to have doubled the number of people paying for an active WoW subscription. That’s according to data in Blizzard’s Q4 2019 report, which stated that the number of players paying for a month or more of service has doubled since Classic launched in mid-2019. Hat tip to Overclock3D, which initially broke the story.
The funny thing about the Classic / Retail debate was the players on the Retail side of the community who were certain Classic would be filled with people doing nothing but complaining about how difficult the game was. I’d lie if I said I hadn’t seen complaints. I’ve done some of the complaining, in point of fact. The game is sometimes infuriating. It can be difficult to find enough quests to level easily. Some of the shortcomings of Blizzard’s original design are apparent above Lvl 30 in ways they weren’t in the original game.
With that said, I’m still playing, even if a lot of CPU and GPU review coverage from November – February basically sidetracked my testing. There’s a lot of good game in WoW Classic, which really isn’t surprising, considering it’s the game that got millions of people to play World of Warcraft. At the same time, though, I probably shouldn’t lean too hard on the strength of that argument. Just because a game has strong elements doesn’t mean it aged particularly well, or even that people are hungry to return once again to its content. The slideshow from our WoW leveling comparison (1-20) is embedded below:
The real question for WoW Classic, to me, is how the project can evolve from here. Blizzard will continue to roll out content updates for WoW Classic, but eventually all good things come to an end. Naxxramas is the last endgame raid, and while that’ll challenge mid-tier players who advanced into endgame content at a slower pace cough, it won’t keep everybody happy.
I can see a few different ways for Blizzard to handle this. One is not to handle it, and to offer Classic as exactly what it is — Classic WoW, no more, no less, with all of the content and limitations that implies. Another option is to develop “classic” implementations of previous WoW expansions and offer Classic players the option to clone an existing hero on a BC server, move a hero from one to the other (with no option to transfer back), or roll fresh and face leveling from 1-70 under TBC rules. I suspect we’d get the first or second option, not the third, but they’re all possible.
But there’s another path that Blizz might take: Further content development for vanilla WoW.
Remember — original WoW had a lot of content visible on the map that was never used. The entire zone of Mount Hyjal is one example. We knew Gilneas existed behind the Graymane Wall, even if we didn’t get to visit the land. We’d been to Tol Barad and Grim Batol in Warcraft 2. Karazhan may not be an instance in Classic, but it exists in Classic. Even if Blizzard confined itself to the lore of Warcraft as it existed in 2004, there are a great many locations we never explored or visited. There’s no reason why new 5-man or raid content couldn’t be added to the existing game.
There’s a specific reason why I can imagine Blizzard going this route — it would allow the company to revisit “What if” scenarios in a timeline where the Dark Portal never re-opened, and the world of Azeroth went on much as it had before. Even if the Draenei never crashed on Azeroth, Arthas would still have eventually reappeared. The Twilight’s Hammer cult was very much present in the later events of vanilla WoW. There are ways and places where Blizzard could expand the lore of Classic with new 5-man dungeons and content adapted to a universe in which things happened very differently (and, presumably, we remain locked at Lvl 60 and with whatever patch version Blizzard stops with).
I’m a lot more interested in Classic’s evolution than one can typically say about a 15 year-old title, even if my playtime has been a bit lacking.

First early details surface for AMD Zen 3 architecture, Zen 4 in design phase
AMD’s Martin Hilgeman has revealed some early details about the Zen 3 architecture at the HPC AI Advisory Council’s 2019 UK Conference. Moreover, Hilgeman confirmed that Zen 4 is currently in a design phase.
According to Hilgeman, Zen 3 server CPUs will release on AMD’s existing SP3 server socket, will support DDR4 memory and offer the same TDP. In addition, they will offer the same core count as the ROME server CPUs. Now while Hilgeman was talking only about the server processors, we can assume that the same will apply to the desktop processors too.
Hilgeman also confirmed that Zen 3 would move away from Zen/Zen 2’s split cache design. AMD’s previous Zen CPUs split the L3 cache between two quad-core CCXs. Theoretically, this could mean that Zen 3 may offer a larger, combine L3 cache. This could benefit the CPU from granting all CPU cores better cache access. Furthermore, AMD may also increase the cache capacity.
Again, in theory this could lower some internal CPU latencies, and allow Zen 3 processors to cache more data on-die. These changes could be beneficial for Zen 3’s gaming performance, given AMD’s existing marketing for “GameCache”, and its benefits for Zen 2.
Lastly, we can assume that AMD will further improve the IPC on Zen 3. After all, we already know that Intel aims to improve the IPC on its next-generation CPUs. As such, it will be interesting to see whether the red team will be able to further close its gap.
Kudos to our reader ‘Metal Messiah’ for bringing this to our attention.
Thanks Overclock3D

  AMD Radeon VII featuring 7nm Vega architecture comes with 3840 Stream Processors, which means that the GPU does not have all cores enabled. AMD may be still planning to introduce the full GPU for gaming, we simply don’t know yet. What we have learned from AMD presentation is that 7nm 331 mm2 GPU will compete against 12nm 545 mm2 processor from NVIDIA.
AMD Radeon VII will not probably compete with TITAN RTX, it will not probably compete with RTX 2080 Ti either. Instead, AMD is focusing on GeForce RTX 2080, the 8GB GDDR6 replacement for GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. AMD solution features about twice as much memory (16 vs 8GB), which is also twice as fast (1 TB/s vs 0.45 TB/s). It does not have Tensor Cores or RT Cores equivalent but is this really that important considering how few games support DXR?
We have no way of knowing how power efficient 7nm Vega really is, this will be verified by independent reviews as they drop around February 7th.
AMD also released more gaming performance benchmarks (source: Overclock3D):

Intel's "Real World" Benchmarking: SYSmark 2018 is (far) more in favor of Intel - as Cinebench is in favor of AMD
According to PCGamesN, Intel speaks with the press (and probably with it's OEM partners) about "real world" benchmarking and providing "Real Usage Guidelines" (RUG) for that. XFastest (Google-translated to english) showing some of the Intel "Real Usage Guidelines" presentation slides, mostly interesting is slide #17. Within this presentation, Intel promote "SYSmark 2018" as the best benchmark to test application performance, because SYSmark include some widely used programs like Office & Adobe software. Intel claims as well a performance advantage for Core i7-9700K (+3%) and Core i9-9900K (+7%) over Ryzen 9 3900X at the SYSmark 2018, called it a benchmark win at application performance. On the other side, Intel dismiss the Cinebench benchmark as too much in favor of AMD's CPUs, calling the Cinebench results as outliers in review of other benchmarks.
As we have a bunch of independent benchmarks from the Ryzen 3000 launch, it's easy to check Intel's claims. First, I created an application performance index without any of the rendering software, i.e. without of 3D Studio, Blender, Cinebench, Corona, FryBench, Indigo, KeyShot, LuxMark, PCMark rendering test, POV-Ray & V-Ray. The new index include mostly office, browser, packer and encoding software. On the left side of the following table you see the original index (including the results from rendering benchmarks), on the right side of the table the new index without any of the rendering benchmark. The base (100%) for all results is the Ryzen 9 3900X, so you can compare it to Intel's claims:
.
Core i7-9700K Core i9-9900K Tests . Tests Core i7-9700K Core i9-9900K 70.6% 78.9% (19) AnandTech (15) 76.2% 81.2% - 72.6% (9) ComputerBase (5) - 72.8% 65.4% 76.5% (12) Cowcotland (10) 68.4% 77.8% 64.6% 70.5% (7) Golem (5) 73.7% 75.0% 59.2% 73.7% (13) Guru3D (8) 64.4% 74.3% 70.9% 76.2% (14) Hardware.info (12) 74.7% 77.5% 54.3% 72.1% (10) Hardwareluxx (6) 56.7% 72.4% - 81.7% (8) Hot Hardware (5) - 85.9% 54.5% 74.7% (9) Lab501 (5) 54.8% 75.6% - 81.2% (13) LanOC (9) - 85.6% 49.9% 62.1% (16) Le Comptoir d.H. (13) 51.2% 62.7% 57.9% 70.3% (7) Overclock3D (5) 61.8% 74.7% 65.3% 75.3% (18) PCLab (14) 69.9% 77.5% 56.1% 71.0% (8) SweClockers (6) 59.5% 74.3% 73.6% 84.5% (29) TechPowerUp (25) 79.7% 89.0% 53.8% 74.6% (8) TechSpot (4) 56.4% 77.3% - 82.6% (17) The Tech Report (12) - 87.0% 71.2% 82.6% (25) Tom's Hardware (18) 78.6% 85.3% 63.8% 76.6% Ø13.4 Performance Index Ø9.8 69.5% 79.5% -36.2% or +56.8% -23.4% or +30.5% Difference to 3900X -30.5% or +43.9% -20.5% or +25.8%
.
You can easily see that removing the rendering benchmarks change not much. Yes, the rendering software is in favor of AMD, but the results from all other tests are not so different. Core i7-9700K and Core i9-9900K are still far away from the performance level of Ryzen 9 3900X at applications. Not a single review claims a performance advantage for Core i7-9700K and/or Core i9-9900K over Ryzen 9 3900X at application performance. In fact, even without rendering benchmarks, every single review still see a huge performance advantage for the Ryzen 9 3900X at application performance.
Intel's SYSmark 2018 results showing some very much different results, so as second I investigate the deviation of SYSmark's and Cinebench's results from the new performance index without any rendering software. To use this new index is clearly in favor of Intel, because usually you would use the original index with all the test results for any performance consideration. But in this case, only the deviation from the index without SYSmark and without Cinebench (or other rendering software) is in the point of view. The base (100%) for all results is still the Ryzen 9 3900X, the deviation of SYSmark and Cinebench to the overall application performance index is noted as "percent point" instead of percent (higher percent points means a higher deviation from the overall application performance index):
.
. Overall Cinebench R20 (M) (deviation) SYSmark 2018 (deviation) Core i9-9900K 76.6% 62.1% 23 percent points 107% 40 percent points Core i7-9700K 63.8% 48.9% 31 percent points 103% 61 percent points
.
This is the second clear result: SYSMark 2018 differs far more from the overall application performance index (without rendering software) than Cinebench. If Cinebench is called for "in favor of AMD", then the SYSmark should be called as "far more in favor of Intel". Beside this, it's a bit of a surprising result for the SYSmark, because the benchmark includes many tests based of different office software und should tend more nearer to any performance index than a benchmark like Cinebench with the single purpose to show the rendering performance. Like it or not: Cinebench is (clearly) nearer on the overall application performance of these CPUs than Intel's preferred SYSmark.
.
PS: If someone want to create an info graphics based on these numbers, please feel free to do so. I'm not so the graphics guy.
