Epiphany on S5 E7
Like many on here (and myself) have already said, this was the best episode of the season so far. It had love, humor, shock, grief...it had it all. And what I’m about to write might be obvious but mind you I’m writing from the viewpoint of this being the first season I watch in real time, having binged 1-4 last summer for the first time.
As soon as we set upon the birthday tent scene, I’m sitting on the edge of my seat (literally) smiling like a giddy school girl because I’m watching the authenticity that we’ve missed for so long come back. When Jamie talks about taking stock and Claire wishing him happy birthday, I’m thrust back to TFC’s small chapter that encompasses the scene. As the scene goes on I realize they are almost verbatim taking the text from the book (FINALLY) and interpreting it on screen. As I watch the scene progress I get feel a literal jolt of excitement in my stomach that I’ve never felt before. It wasn’t until halfway through the episode I realize what I felt was actual joy that this episode has the look and feel of season 1 and 2. I feel connected to JC because I see them feel connected, something we’ve not fully seen in awhile.
This is where my epiphany comes in (again, from the viewpoint of someone new to Outlander): I have been watching the show in a way that the writers want to write it, for their own interpretation. Yes they stick to plot lines for the most part but they also change it up a lot. Even Matt and Maril said during BTS that SC are the only two left from the original group. Which means the obvious: they know their characters better than anyone. The writers can provide the words (or just take the book dialogue to make it easier...I mean...) but if the actors can’t deliver it, they aren’t going to feel it and we the viewers certainly aren’t going to feel it. This is the first episode in a very long time that I have felt really emotionally connected to JC (and I say them only since i only watch for their love story). The stable scene last week was underwhelming. It could have been delivered so differently had the direction and input from the actors been infused more. I have felt that they’ve been held back for quite some time. In the end, this is my own observation and my way to express in words my experiences watching the season thus far as a 2019 viewer. Sam and Caitriona wil no doubt make the latter half of the season what we’ve been wanting to see (again) all along: quintessential Jamie and Claire Fraser. Thanks again Sam and Cait for taking the reins and delivering episode 7.
