I’m currently re-watching Parks & Rec for the first time and I think my favorite thing about Michael Schur’s shows are the incredible friendship foundations that he builds in each of the 4 big show-defining ships. Jim/Pam. Benslie. Peraltiago. Cheleanor. Each ship is built on a strong, mutually supportive partnership and honestly, it’s why they’re all #relationshipgoals.

Some Memories You May have Forgotten

Hey chili babies! It’s been almost two weeks and I can’t stop thinking about that video that Michael showed Chidi and Eleanor. I’ve said it before--I’m a huge fan of the “in any universe” romantic trope--so that video was an absolute treasure trove for me. So let’s dive into that video and unpack all the wonderful Cheleanor goodies inside!

My favorite thing about this video is the variety. The writers, Kristen Bell and WJH showed us a ton of different facets of the Cheleanor relationship. I listened to The Good Place podcast for Pandemonium a few days ago and in it, Michael Schur says that he prompted Kristen and William with scenarios and they ad-libbed the results. He purposefully filmed without sound so that he wouldn’t be tempted to use it, thus keeping the silent film aesthetic. It’s kind of a shame becuase I’d pay big money to know what they said, but it’s heartening to know that they have such a good grasp of their characters that they could play so many different scenarios off the cuff.

So what did we learn about the Cheleanor dynamic from these memories?

(Also, sorry about the shirty quality of these stills. I have no skill with photoshop and this was the best I could do with screenshots off Hulu. Trying not to lower my point total by stealing gifs from more talented members of the fandom).

Casual Intimacy

Honestly, this might be my favorite kiss in the video. It’s so easy, so natural. This shot tells us so much about how Chidi and Eleanor’s relationship would be. Eleanor’s half-way through pulling on a sweater; Chidi’s erasing the board. The kiss is clearly an everyday occurrence. They’re so comfortable with each other and the intimacy is second-nature. It’s #relationshipgoals.

Romance

Ah, the date kiss. Another glimpse into their relationship after they’ve relaxed into it. This is a “we’re in love and we know it” kiss. They go on romantic dates, they talk, they drink wine. They make out in public and aren’t anxious or embarrassed. #relationshipgoalspart2

High-Stakes Passion

Ok, this one might be tied for favorite. If the romantic date was one common rom-com cliche, then this is the ultimate cliche. The “meeting at the train station” kiss. The “let’s run away together” kiss. I don’t care how cliche it is, because HOT DIGGITY DOG it’s beautiful. I want the backstory on this particular reboot so badly. Eleanor is clearly surprised to see Chidi. Chidi is clearly looking for Eleanor. The way he tosses the luggage, runs up to her and grabs her is downright swoon-worthy. But seriously, the variety this shot gives us is amazing. We get to see versions of their settled-in relationship, followed immediately with an incredibly passionate first kiss. Get you an otp that can do both.

Happy First Kisses

And then we get a totally different first kiss. According to the podcast, the scenario was that Eleanor was feeling very giddy and happy because she’d had a great day. She’d done something good (like the S1 episode when she lets someone go ahead of her for fro-yo) and she was so euphoric about it that she just throws caution to the wind and kisses Chidi. And I love it. They don’t always realize they’re in love because they’re in danger of losing each other. Sometimes, they’re relationship starts naturally (and adorably). Also, Chidi’s little jump after the kiss is the cutest thing and I am in love with William Jackson Harper, okay?

Additionally, I love that we’ve seen this relationship initiated so many different ways. Sometimes Eleanor kisses Chidi. Sometimes Chidi kisses Eleanor. It seems that Eleanor usually figures out her feelings first (which makes sense, since she’s far more decisive than Chidi) but it’s not always Eleanor who makes the first move. That’s some true “in every version of the universe” shirt right there.

Learning From Each Other

I realize this is meant to be a joke but seriously consider what’s going on here. Did Chidi get tired of never understanding Eleanor’s references? Did he ask for a crash course? Did Eleanor take it upon herself to teach Chidi in the hopes that he would enjoy the reality show with her? Either way, it shows that Eleanor is not the only one learning to appreciate Chidi’s passions; Chidi is also willing to learn about what Eleanor loves. He may not get it, but he’s trying, bless his heart. And isn’t that an important key to relationships? Supporting your partner’s interests?

Shared Interests

And then of course, there’s the actual shared interests. Look at them, casually reading philosophy together while enjoying a picnic. Not only is this another glimpse at how comfortable they are together, but Eleanor is also reading What We Owe to Each Other, the official Cheleanor text. A text Eleanor gloms on to in any version of the reboot. They genuinely have interests in common, even though they are very different people. They have such a solid foundation for a relationship!

Sharing Dreams with Each Other

I CAN’T with this shot. This is where I went from sad to devastated. What an epic callback.

Eleanor “THAT’S YOUR IDEA OF PARADISE???” Shellstrop is in a rowboat, sipping wine and listening to Chidi read (what I have to assume is) French poetry. I need backstory on this scene, stat. Eleanor is helping Chidi live out his fantasy of paradise and it is so romantic, I’ll never be satisfied with a real life relationship again.

The character growth implied by this single shot?? Chidi being vulnerable enough to tell Eleanor about this fantasy. Chidi loving Eleanor enough to want to share the experience with her. Eleanor being selfless enough to indulge Chidi’s dream and in love enough to actually enjoy it.

Call the coroner, I’m dead.

Fun

Another rom-com trope, the dance and kiss in the rain. How adorable is this scene?? That sudden rain could have easily ruined their picnic (and honestly...wouldn’t that be kind of a clue that you aren’t in paradise?) but instead, they laugh, dance and kiss. Chidi makes Eleanor laugh with those silly puddle kicks and then turns very tender as he invites Eleanor to dance with him in the rain. They’re able to joke and be completely silly together. They find the fun in a bummer. And again their intimacy is so simple; just look at the completely natural way they slide from goofy to romantic. I love (1) couple.

Arguments

And what exploration of their relationship would be complete without the arguments? Eleanor and Chidi are very different people; clashes are inevitable. Eleanor is not one to hide her frustration. Chidi is not one to compromise his beliefs. They are going to fight and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it might be the most healthy relationship either of them has ever been in. Eleanor argues and blusters, but she learns to admit when she’s wrong. She learns to apologize and to forgive. Chidi could easily bury his frustrations rather than confront them, but Eleanor forces his true feelings to the surface. Chidi learns that it’s ok to be frustrated, to stand up for yourself, and to be honest about how you feel. They fight and they forgive. They are stronger for their arguments.

TL;DR: “Some Memories You May Have Forgotten” is a gift and we should all be grateful. Let the fanfiction fleshing out these moments commence!
