I'm trying to figure out which scene should be the beginning of my science fantasy story! It's about a spider-alien weaver who's chosen to go into the woods where lives a Thing her village has to pay tribute to. I have three scenes I could start the story with (one about important backstory, one the reveal when she's chosen, and the other when she's leaving to go into the woods), and I don't know which one to choose... Ugh. @chauceryfairytales

Have you written all three scenes, or just outlined them? If it's the latter, it might be worth it to build a case for each one and give them all a spin. I've sometimes written two or three iterations of a scene before settling!
Though I gotta say, my favorite opening scenes are always the ones that start in the thick of the action/conflict, because I like having to piece together what happened even if by a small extent. A book that does this really well is The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh, if you need inspiration.
