Portugal hang on for 3-2 win despite spirited Black Stars display
A two-minute collapse in the second half by Ghana’s Black Stars helped Portugal pick up a 3-2 win in their Group H clash. Andre Ayew’s 73rd-minute goal cancelled out Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty and appeared to have given the Stars a new lease of life. However, goals from Joao Felix and Rafael Leao put Portugal back in control. Osman Bukari headed home a second for the Black Stars but the…

2022 World Cup: We didn’t ‘over-respect’ Portugal – Otto Addo
Tumblr media
Black Stars coach, Otto Addo, has dismissed assertions that the team over-respected Portugal in their first World Cup clash at Doha’s 974 Stadium.
According to some critics, the team lost their opening Group H game because they were overwhelmed by the caliber of the Portuguese; forcing them to coil into their shells.
But reacting to these concerns, the Black Stars trainer stated in a presser on Sunday that his boys played without any intimidation.
According to him, even though the squad had some inexperienced legs, it did not affect their confidence against the star-studded Portuguese side.
Responding to a question from Successnation's Gary Al-Smith, he said, “I don’t think it’s true. Our players did so well. I don’t think we over-respected them”.He continued, “For me, we showed that we could compete with them, even though we had a lot of inexperienced players.
Some even had their debuts in the last game against Switzerland, but they performed”.
In a match that has been widely described as ‘unfair’, the Black Stars lost by three goals to two against the Portuguese last Thursday, November 24.
After a goalless first half, the Portuguese drew first blood after Ronaldo converted a controversial penalty in the 65th minute. The lead was soon canceled by Ghanaian skipper, André Dede Ayew in the 73rd minute, after tapping home from a pass by Ajax midfielder, Mohammed Kudus.
But the Portuguese took the lead again and deepened their dominance with goals from João Félix and Rafael Leão in the 78th and 80th minute respectively.
The Stars managed to close the gap with an 89th-minute strike from substitute, Osman Bukari, heading home a cross from former Chelsea defender, Baba Rahman.
But this was not enough to stop the team from conceding their first defeat in the tournament. Meanwhile, the team is poised to make amends in their next match against South Korea.
Addressing the press, coach Otto Addo, said his charges are fired up for their second game in Qatar.
He said says Ghanaians will see a passionate Black Stars team against South Korea on Monday.

May 25, 2024
Tumblr media
The Champions League Final will feature the Belgrade derby, one of footballs most fierce rivalries.
There have been 161 encounters between the two Serbian giants, producing one of the strongest rivalries in football history. Every great of Serbian football has either come through one of these clubs, but it is time for a new hero to put their name in the history books.
Red Star has appeared in one Champions League semi-final and one UEFA Cup final. The high point of that period came in 1991, when Red Star Belgrade won the Champions League final against Marseille. Later that year, Red Star defeated Colo-Colo in the World Club Championship to achieve the pinnacle of club, state, and Eastern European football.
The final that will be played at Wembley (May 31 2024) is more than just a trophy for the two clubs. It means bragging rights in Serbia and the ability to claim the most prestigious cup in club football over your most fierce rivals.
Red star forward Osman Bukari has been clinical in the 2023/2024 Champions League campaign, finding the back of the eight times in nine appearances which included a thrilling hat-trick against competition favourites Manchester City.

On the other wing, newcomer Peter Olayinka has settled into life well at Red Star, bringing his Champions League experience to the team has shown during the campaign as he has provided the most assists in the tournament thus far with seven.
At the back, Socceroos defender Milos Degenek will also be critical in ensuring Red Star are able to lift the trophy, making several game winning tackles throughout the tournament while keeping four clean sheets in nine games.
The match is set for an 8pm kick off, where the delije (Red Star ultras) will be located in the northern terrace of the stadium, roaring the team on in what may turn into a second Champions League title for the club.
