How to backup and keep data safe. In digital life, it is difficult to find a person who has not lost a personal file due to a hard drive error. In this case the main problem starts after the hard drive is damaged. Victims of digital misery do not get cool thinking about what can be done to recover Sadh’s file. Many do not hesitate to spend large sums of money to recover the file.

I’ve always thought that I could better protect my personal data. But I thought wrong. I kept my personal files on two external hard disk drives. In July, two drives were damaged within 24 hours.
Windows 10 tells me a drive isn’t working properly. Repeatedly offered to fix it, but to no avail. The computer couldn’t get anything out except the suspicious click sound.

The whole thing – as a consumer – makes me wonder, what is the right way to back up your data, and what is the way out if all else fails?
An external hard drive is a portable storage device that can be attached to a PC. There are two types – hard disk drives (HDD) that store data using a rotating magnetic disk, and newer technology solid state drives (SSDs) that use chip-dependent flash storage technology.
I started using one terabyte western digital HDD drive in 2015. Before that I used to keep data on my laptop and burnable DVD. If for some reason my computer broke down, I would buy a new one, retrieve the data from the old laptop and transfer it directly to the new PC.
But after I started using external hard drives, it was so easy to use that I started relying on technology. When I didn’t have another second drive, there seemed to be no doubt about my solution.
A few years ago when I bought a new laptop with a lot of space but fast SSD, I was not surprised – I started keeping most of the files on the hard drive, some of the files I used all the time just left on the laptop.
As a result, I was shocked after two hard drives were damaged. I ran on the internet, but the online ‘how-to software tutorial’ did not work.
I started Google the data recovery service and called the London based company.
One engineer immediately advised me to stop trying to access Windows hard drives. He said the drive had suffered a logic failure and would cost 250 to fix. Warning, I could completely lose data if I keep trying to get into Drive.
The click, on the other hand, sounded like a drive, its condition was worse – a mechanical error occurred in the read-and-write head – much like the needle of a record player. That would have changed, it would have cost at least five hundred pounds to fix.
No other organization could offer a cheap solution. Only Caris PC World’s Team Nouhau service said they would charge 90 for a logic failure and 350 for a mechanical or material failure.
The retailer added that if they failed to return the data, there would be no cost. But you have to wait for it, especially considering the epidemic.
I also sought advice from Western Digital, who said, “If Drive stops working, we encourage buyers to contact our customer service team to identify problems and discuss solutions.”
“If the drive is found to be damaged, our customer service team can assist with the replacement product on a warranty basis, sending the buyer to one of our data recovery partners if necessary.” – Adding Western Digital.
But one of my drives is six years old and the other is four years old. As a result, the only option at hand is data recovery for money.
So which is the right way to backup data?
I asked the question to different data experts. I also asked Caris PC World and consumer device maker Western Digital and Seagate. All of them are one in terms of advice – keep three backups of your data and try to save at least one copy outside your home.
“My solution is to get three devices – one will be SSD and the other two will be HDD drives – from two or three different manufacturers,” said Joseph Naghadi, chief data recovery specialist at London-based technology company Data Recovery Lab.
“Three hard drives from three different manufacturers can be assumed to not crash at the same time.” – Naghdi added.
He further advised to make a copy of the data that you do not want to lose at all and save it in the relative’s house. For example, valuable family photos.
Michael Cade, a senior global technologist at data management firm Viam, agrees. “I have two big hard drives that I keep at my parents’ house 30 miles away,” he said. I make copies of all the important data, and it is not on the hard drive and I bring it. ”
“Then I have another hard drive that I always have at home. I keep a backup of it regularly and maybe once a month, I’ll take the drive with us and not replace the one at my parents’ house. ” – Mentioned Cade.
Seagate told me that their drive comes with data recovery services, including logic failures. However, they took the cost for the mechanical failure, but the company did not agree to give me any specific cost.
Gavin Martin, Seagate’s customer technical engineer, advises using “ragged drives” or “SSDs” in extreme sports, which do not break easily.
“It’s fine equipment and parts will break down over a period of time, depending on the environment being used – high or low humidity, extreme temperatures,” he said. You just have to be more discriminating with the help you render toward other people. No brand in the world will guarantee you data for life. ”
Keep data safe & Secure
Dean Kramer, director of services at Dixon Carphone, which owns Caris PC World, said that keeping HDDs still works, as there is four times more storage space than SSDs.
“But as the technology becomes more stable,” the retailer is moving its product range toward SSD. “We expect SSD prices to be affordable in the next few years,” Kramer said.
Then there is the cloud. Seagate, Caris PC World and Cad are all in favor of storing data in the cloud like iCloud, Dropbox or OneDrive. However, the data recovery lab is skeptical about how secure the data will be. “You can’t rely on online backups – if you spend a thousand pounds a month on cloud data storage, maybe yes, but if you spend little or nothing, then no.”
The Data Recovery Lab costs 500 for a mechanical error and aims to recover data within six days.
Naghadi explained the reason for such a high price. Replacing the drive’s ‘read-and-write heads’ requires a special “clean room” laboratory that costs about হাজার 25,000 to install – a complex, cumbersome process, he said.
Naghadi added that there is only one organization in the world that provides software and hardware for data recovery – that is Russia’s Ace Laboratory. “The problem is they have no real rivals.” – He said.
According to Data Recovery Lab and Caris PC World’s, there is also a severe shortage of data recovery professionals in the UK. As there is no institutional qualification for data recovery, both the institutes have had to create their own training programs.
For tech-savvy shoppers, experts recommend the use of a personal ‘NAS-RAID box’, known as Nass-Raid in the spoken language of tech workers. This Wi-Fi enabled device can hold multiple HDDs or SSDs. As a result, even if one stops working, your data is copied to multiple “extra” drives.
In my case, experts think I’m particularly unlucky to have two drives lost at the same time. I spent behind the cheapest option. After all, it took me 49 days to get a drive back, but sadly only a small amount of data was recovered.

Anyone else experience C1 catalogs taking forever to load? Once the app is open, then I can load/change catalogs with ease. But the first time I open the app and the catalog size is at least 40GB, it just takes f-o-r-e-v-e-r. Reminds me of Aperture 2. Just painful and my number one complaint. I’m still using the test version… but maybe things are better once I purchase???

Apparently, it is a known issue. Received this from their tech support (which was pretty cool that they’d reply to a non-customer using their time-bombed app):
Hi
If you are on “All images” in the catalog, then CaptureOne is strating threads to open all images.
If you instead highlight a low count folder before closing, it will only start opening that folder and it will be much quicker.
We are looking in to things to improve this.

I have a fast iMac, with a very fast thunderbolt drobo. My library contains 40k images. C1 opens in 2mins- 10sec. Holy Cow. I will try pre-selecting a low count folder as described above. Hope this works. So far C1 is the best alternative to Aperture. I tried LR… Really not happy with that program. It’s kindof a disorganized mess.

Like I wrote in the other thread, try to relocate your masters out of the Aperture library. I think reading an Aperture managed library may slow C1 down (just an idea).
My catalog also opens quite slowly, taking about a minute with 63K images. This is with the catalog on an SSD and the referenced images on a Thunderbolt drive.
It was worse when I first created the catalog from my Aperture library (over 2 minutes, like you are seeing) but I used the command “File > Verify Catalog or Session…” and it found some problems which it was able to repair. That improved the file opening time from over two minutes to about a minute.
Also, selecting either a small folder of images to open at startup or the full “All Images” collection doesn’t make any difference in the performance.
Look at what part of your catalog you have selected in the left sidebar when closing C1. I've noticed that if I select All Images, then loading of the catalog upon next startup can be slow. Selecting an individual Album or Folder that has fewer images speeds up loading on next startup. I've given this feedback to PhaseOne. Don't know if they will find a way to improve that in a future update, but they do seem to be very interested in user feedback so tell them all of the quirks you experience using their Support Case system.
I am experiencing this very slow startup as well. When the catalog and referenced files are both on external HDD, I have extremely slow startup. I made a screen recording and provided it to PhaseOne. It is an 8 minute video. I have under 40,000 images and the catalog is about 64GB. I copied the catalog to an internal SSD and left the referenced files on external HDD. Startup was extremely fast by comparison (under 30 seconds vs 5-8 minutes).
I have a running case open with PhaseOne (case #215211 if anyone else wants to reference it in their own case).
I’m using Apple Photos to be my reference catalog because C1 was so slow. C1 is too good and I don’t waste my time editing with any other software. Then Photos is too good at cataloging. jpegs and raw files show as 1 file and the viewing modes are perfect. No need to catalog every single photo with C1.

Milo, this seems like a brilliant idea. I would like to reference my growing iPhone images from C1. Are you able to comment on the following:
1) Did you create a new C1 catalog for the images in Photos?
2) By default, Photos does not download images to your computer. The pictures reside in the iCloud, unless you download them into the Photos application. Are you only referencing the downloaded images in Photos?
3) How are you organizing your images in Photos and how does that structure appear in C1?

Your idea of referencing your Photos library in C1 could be a great solution for those of us who increasingly use iPhone 7 Plus pictures from our travels, etc.

I haven’t seen the slow starting many have. My catalog is 82G, and opens in approx. 9.5 seconds either on the internal HD on my laptop, or the backup copy on an external raid 5 thunderbolt DAS. All files are referenced, there aren’t any stored in the catalog. Thats opening on a root folder with not thumbnails showing on start up. The time measurement is the best I can do with a stop watch.

What is your configuration? Memory? HDD or SSD? Catalog on internal or external disk? I get the best performance from placing the catalog itself on internal SSD and leaving images on external disk. I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB of RAM, 1TB internal SSD, 2TB external portable HDD. My catalog has 56,000 images now.
If I select “All Images”, it sends Capture One into a tailspin where it consumes all 16GB of RAM and then some (so says Activity Monitor). The app locks up for 5-10 minutes, but eventually the memory goes back down and the app becomes responsive again. I opened several cases with Capture One and provided them a lot of evidence of the issue. They agree there is an issue. I believe an update will addresses this. I can't say when that update will be released.
If I select any other folder or album with fewer images with under 1000 image, for example, Capture One is much faster.
With a few tweaks, Capture One is a fantastic Lightroom alternative.

One of the most pleasant surprises of going 100% Adobe-free has been the switch to Phase One’s Capture One. It has long been a favorite among pros, but I have to admit that I overlooked it at first after being seduced by the slicker marketing and shinier interfaces of some other self-described Lightroom alternatives. None of those proved to be — or show any real progress towards ever being — a complete replacement for Adobe Lightroom, at least not for many professional photographers.
Capture One Pro 11, on the other hand, is an excellent Adobe Lightroom alternative. Capture One is faster, has more powerful tools (including layers), and does not require a subscription! If only Phase One’s marketing reach matched that of Adobe’s (or Luminar’s for that matter), more photographers might learn that they’ve had a wonderful Lightroom alternative just waiting for them all along.

Capture One 12 is here and it’s the best pro-level Lightroom alternative on the market.
I do have one issue, however, with the configuration options of Capture One. Although it is simple enough to import images into Capture One while keeping those big RAW files on my external RAID, the preview and thumbnail images that Capture One creates can only be stored in the catalog file itself, which is actually a macOS package. This is not unlike Apple’s Photos app, and it makes sense for smaller catalogs.
However, the size of the preview files is not trivial. For a large library, the catalog file can reach many gigabytes, even while the database file itself is only a few hundred megabytes. I would much rather store those preview files on the external SSD that I reserve specifically for caches. That way I don’t waste precious space on my internal SSD, and I can exclude that drive from my various backup services. There’s not much point wasting bandwidth and storage space by constantly backing up new preview files that can always be recreated if lost, and, in my particular case, the catalog file size had surpassed the single file size limit for syncing with iCloud Drive, which is a critical part of my workflow.
I was unable to find an answer in the Capture One user forum, but I eventually, and accidentally, stumbled on a solution while testing the Backup Catalog… command. For whatever reason, Capture One creates a standalone database file when exporting a backup and separates out the preview image cache into its own directory.
It occurred to me that this database file was the same type as that found within the contents of the default catalog package, which led to the following 10-step procedure to move the cache to an external drive.
Step-by-step tutorial:
1 Find the location of the Capture One catalog file in the Finder. The default path is Pictures ▸ Capture One Catalog ▸ Capture One Catalog.cocatalog.
2 Right click on the catalog file (extension .cocatalog), which is actually a package.
3 Select Show Package Contents. This will reveal a .cocatalogdb file, along with various directories, including Cache and possibly Adjustments. You may also see Originals if you have opted to store photos inside the catalog, although that would negate the space savings of storing the preview files in a separate location!

4 Copy the .cocatalogdb file (along with the Adjustments and Originals folders, if they exist) to the directory where you would like to keep your new database file. An easy way to do this is to select the files/directories and press Command-C. Click the back arrow in the top left corner of the Finder window to exit the package. If you want to keep your new catalog database file in the same directory as the original catalog package, just press Command-V to paste right there, or navigate to another location and paste the files there. Personally, I choose to store my Capture One Catalog in a directory that syncs with iCloud.

5 Copy just the Cache directory to the drive where you want to store all of your preview images. In my case, I keep the cache in a folder named Capture One on an external SSD.
6 Delete the Cache directory that you just copied (the one in the same folder as the .cocatalogdb file).
7 Here’s where the magic happens. Use the Terminal to create a symbolic link, also known as a symlink or soft link, in the location of the Cache folder you just deleted. This symlink will point to your external cache in a way that is transparent to Capture One. To do this, enter the following at the command line prompt, replacing the first path with the location of your external cache directory and the second path with the original location. Note the backslash escape characters before the spaces.
ln -s /Volumes/My External Drive/Capture One/Cache /Users/username/Pictures/Capture One Catalog/Cache
Hint: You can drag a directory from the Finder into the Terminal window to paste in the path.
8 Double-click your new, nice and slim .cocatalogdb file to launch Capture One. Et voila! Your catalog should load exactly as before.
9 If everything is cool (and all photos are backed up as always!), you can delete the original, bulky .cocatalog file.
10 I can’t end at step 9! So go take some pictures!

How do I make WD My Passport work on Mac?
'Okay, so I've been hearing about how great WD's Passport is, so I grabbed one to find out for myself how true this is. But I hear to use it on Mac, I have to format it first. How do I do that, exactly? A little help, people.'
This is a question often asked by Mac users only. Windows users don't need to do much other than plug in the WD Passport to use it, but for Mac, it's not as straightforward as that.

The difference in Mac and Windows' native format systems are to blame for this. But don't fret, because this article will show you simple ways to go about formatting your WD Passport so you can easily use it on both Mac and Windows.
Part 1 - Overview of WD My Passport File System
Technology has reached a point where it pretty much seeps into every aspect of our daily life. We're always using our phones and computers to send messages, host meetings, shop online, etc.
Of course, there is much exchange of valuable data as these happen, and where you keep this data is extremely important; that's where WD's My Passport comes in.
My Passport is a hard drive that's trustworthy and portable enough to be given a 5-star rating on almost any website you check. Coupled with the WD Backup TM app and password protection feature, My Passport helps to keep your data safe. That being said, situations arise when you'll need to format or reformat the drive.
Default File System of WD my passport
Western Digital (WD) hard drives are formatted with NTFS (Windows) or HFS+ (Mac) by default to make them more compatible with both operating systems.
Granted, FAT32 is less efficient than NTFS in Windows, but it has inherent benefits too, like its compatibility. And to connect your NTFS-formatted My Passport to macOS, you'll need to utilize a formatting tool.
This is especially true if you regularly use your WD drive on both Windows and macOS. So always remember to check if the drive is formatted or not.
Why WD my Passport can't be used on mac?
A significant number of users trust West Digital hard drives. Their auto backup, password protection, and high reliability are second to none.
But nothing is perfect, right? Sometimes when you connect the WD My Passport drive to your Mac, it's grayed out in Disk Utility.

Anti-virus
Yes, an anti-virus is meant to protect your system, but it can also have 'side effects' that won't bode too well for it. For example, most anti-virus is notorious for identifying laptop games as a virus, even though they aren't. Sometimes, they prevent the games from launching.
They can also stop some software from starting. This applies to your hard drives too.

Not much needs to be said because everyone knows the kind of damage virus is capable of. There's a virus out there that can even hide your hard drive. So even if you plug it into your My Passport into your Mac, you won't see it.
Motherboard errors
Without a motherboard, a system is pretty much a screen and keyboard. So, if your Mac's motherboard suffers software or hardware damage, almost nothing will work properly, and that includes your USB ports. So, your drive, even if it's functioning properly, might not even be recognized.

This time, the problem stems from your WD My Passport. Maybe the drive fell or a malfunctioning system corrupted it. Either of these issues could lead to the drive malfunctioning or not showing up when you plug it into your Mac.
Part 2 - How to Format WD my Passport for Mac?
The simple step-by-step guide below will show you how to format your WD My Passport on your computer, so pay attention. The information you'll find here touches on formatting and reformatting WD's My Passport for your Mac.
Login into your Mac
Just turn on your Mac and when it boots up, plug in your My Passport drive to your WD. Your WD My Passport drive will appear as a rectangular, yellow icon on your desktop (it looks just like the image below).
Navigate to Finder if Your Drive Isn't Visible
If your My Passport drive doesn't turn up for some reason, click on 'Finder', then select 'Preferences'.
A small window will open up. Make sure you tick the checkboxes 'Hard Disks' and 'External Disks.'
Your WD My Mac Passport drive should now be running on your screen.
Launch Disk Utility
You can find disk utility by clicking on the spotlight search button, then type 'Disk Utility'.
Highlight 'Disk Utility', then double-click it.
Access your Drives
You'll see your internal and external hard drives on the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window.
Click on the dropdown arrow to expand or collapse the drives on the list.
Look under the 'External' category and you'll find your My Passport drive there. If it has not appeared, your Mac's USB port could be malfunctioning. So, unplug your drive and restart your Mac. That will probably fix the issue.
Make sure you have your drive selected. By the way, choose the first drive you see on the list; you know, the one at the top. Doing otherwise might lead to issues when formatting the WD Passport for Mac.
Format Your Drive
Find the 'View' button at the top left of your Disk Utility window and click it. A drop-down menu will open up.
Remember, what comes next is formatting. So, make sure your files have been copied off the drive if there are any on it.
Click on 'Erase'
In the small window that pops up, you'll have to input a name for the My Passport drive first.
You'll find it useful to give a name to your drive to show what you'll be using the drive for.
Right below that is the 'Format' field. There are a few formats you can choose from but you only need one.
Choose Format Type
Select 'Extended Mac OS (Journaled)'.
This is the file system you will need if you want to be able to easily transfer files back and forth between your Mac and you're My Passport drive. The format is also what makes the drive compatible with Time Machine for backup on your Mac
Next, for the Scheme option, select 'GUID Partition Map.'
Finally, click on the 'Erase' button. It will just take a few seconds for the drive to be formatted. Once, look at your desktop and you'll see the icon of WD my Passport on it.
Eject Your Drive
Oh, and always remember to safely eject your drive before unplugging its cable. Failure to do this could lead to the driver crashing or suffering some issues.
To eject your WD my Passport drive from your Mac, just right-click on its icon on your desktop.
In the dropdown menu you see, click on 'Eject'.

Plug the wall/power bar and let power enter it.

Why is this affecting me so much?
This is probably going to be an incredibly long post, one that I don’t expect many would read but that I feel I have to write. If not for Epic to read it at some point, then for myself, to remember this and why this game was so important.
I will have a lot of personal opinions, unfair comparisons and highly critical comments in those comparisons that may or may not be accurate. There will also be speculation as there’s more going on than what they’ve been willing to say.

How did I learn about it?
Honestly, I have no idea and that’s an issue that lead to its current situation. This is what I remember hearing back then. Paragon is a new game by Epic Games, creators of the Gears of War series (which I’m not really a fan of) and the Unreal Engine (which has always fascinated me) It was going to be a MOBA (which I hate, don’t like any MOBAs except Paragon but I’m getting ahead of myself here)

Clearly the above isn’t enough to get me to try it, on the contrary. So what was it, I must have seen something that made me think, this is worth a try. As great as that announce trailer was, none of the heroes in it speak to me, not even Sparrow whom ended up as my first mastered character and the one I own the most skins for. It wasn’t a gameranx before you buy thing which to this day I haven’t seen nor plan to, nor Angry Joe’s first look which again, I have no interest in watching. I’m not being critical of those channels, it’s just that I already experienced the game, most if not all of its iterations, so I really don’t care what they had to say about it.
Well... funny enough it was Overwatch the reason I gave Paragon a try. While Paragon is relatively older than Overwatch, it was in closed beta for the first few months. After trying, and falling in love with Overwatch’s beta, I felt the need to fill that void but with another, hopefully similar game. Then I saw the announcement of Paragon’s own free open beta weekend

I don’t remember if I took part on it or not, the next thing I wrote of Paragon after that was Digital Foundry’s graphic comparison of the game on PC and PS4 vanilla (at the time, the only PS4 there was) praising how a console game let you use mouse and keyboard.
Now, going back to Overwatch for a second, there are a few things you should know.
1. I have a friend that is part of the Overwatch team
2. I bought the game myself, no free keys and it was the PS4 version
3. I didn’t have enough money to buy it at launch, I ended up buying it late June or mid July, can’t remember and it’s not THAT important right now.
4. I tend to prefer cartoon like graphics as they are pretty much timeless
With that being said, this was my first impressions on Paragon, having tasted Overwatch.
“I feel really bad for the artists working on Paragon. Clearly a lot of effort was put into the design and modeling of the characters but good God they're so damn boring. The maps are also bleh with a palette that doesn't help things at all. Animations feel like over a decade old with awkward jump and run. I will be surprised if this game is actually successful 'cause it's a MOBA and what's the most important part of a MOBA? The damn heroes.“
I’ve been wrong before, but this is probably the top one. The map in question is what we now call Legacy. After spending a long time in super colorful maps in Overwatch, I found myself in this semi realistic map with ruins and a jungle that looked old and boring. Movement was too slow and I’m not sure what I was talking about with the animations, maybe they were bugged at the time ‘cause Paragon’s animations are impressive. Some of the best work in gaming.
Needless to say, I had a rocky start with Paragon, mostly because I didn’t understand it. I don’t know how long I tried it before I deleted it but that’s what I ended up doing. I got frustrated and instead of doing research I just quit.
So, going back to Overwatch for another second, how long was my honeymoon after I bought it? It lasted for about a month, after that I started seeing all the issues the game had and has (most of them are still there) especially on consoles. Broken heroes, Play of the game that encourages nonsense, the “scoreboard” that highlights the wrong things, lack of content, lack of heroes, easily exploitable on certain maps, etc. So I guess, thanks to Overwatch, not only did I dare to try Paragon, but fell in love with it. (btw, I did check, bought Overwatch mid June and by mid July I was sick of it, only made worse in August trying to get the limited time skins I wanted) And that’s not even talking about how Overwatch popularized Loot Boxes (yes, they have existed for a long long time, they just made it seem OK in a full priced game, ‘cause it was $60 on console)
Now, I couldn’t find this anywhere but I remember I returned to Paragon when Lt. Belica was announced. Gave it another go but again, failed to understand the character and gameplay. I will get more into the true problem for new people later on, but for now let’s go with why did I delete the game a second time. Well, it wasn’t out of frustration this time, rather than HDD space on my PS4. At the time it didn’t support external HDD. When did I return in a more permanent manner? When Countess came out.

She became my main for a while, which is funny ‘cause part of her kit was taken from the hero that would completely grab me forever. I started understanding the design decisions of the characters and the graphics, I got past the part where they wouldn’t last a few years, I was wrong about that too. I think they found the right balance between realistic and somewhat cartoonish to make the graphics last. That and they weren’t shy on retouching characters later on.
On November 2016 I said this
“Now I have a better understanding of the game, mind you that if I were to read about it I MAY learn it faster, but I prefer to learn from my own mistakes rather than trying to play like someone else that is probably more skilled. I can accomplish a similar standard just playing with things that work for me rather than what is "optimal". Or that word that gets on my nerves, the META. Fucking meta...”
Funny, I still agree on that.
Paragon growing on me
I’m going to quote myself again, but I’m going to edit said quote for context purposes, not trying to say something different than I said before. For instance, the post was made with a video that I won’t include here, so anything mentioning the video is out of context.
“The more I play Paragon, the more I like it, but at the same time the more I notice its problems. Paragon currently has 24 heroes with a new one added every 3 weeks. Only has one map and one game mode, but it's free and high quality so no complaints here. However if you're like me, you tend to pick certain characters based mostly on looks not on play style. This is one of the biggest issues in Paragon and even Smite for that matter. The character design in Paragon is on point but at the same time it’s dull and boring.
You have your human characters, your robots and your beasts. They decided to go with a semi realistic look for the game instead of doing the cartoon like design from popular and unpopular MOBAs. Which is fine I guess, you want to differentiate yourself, especially when now everyone that does it is instantly going with "an Overwatch look". On PS4 they had to lower the graphics quite a bit.
Paragon has a hero limit since launch and you can't switch heroes of course. The character selection process is completely random (I was the first to pick this time by pure luck) there are no rules for this other than what common courtesy SHOULD dictate. Personally, even if I get to pick first, let's say if the third player selects Countess before I do, I consider that a priority so I leave Countess open for him. You should learn how to play at least 4 characters. Game actually wants you to learn five characters, that's why you get 5 deck slots by default.
I prefer to play Countess, but I'm better with Sparrow and already have experience with Belica. That being said, the whole mastery system induces people to rage quit when the character they wanted gets picked by someone else. It starts off fine, but eventually leveling up your character becomes a chore and a grind.”
This was still back in November 2016.
On December 2016, I had this to say about the game
“There were a few things keeping the game from being as good as it could be. One of them being the learning curve. This wasn't your go in spray and pray your way to victory while you press a button to get a highlight at the end of the match to feel great about your awesomeness. No, in Paragon you needed to learn a lot about the mechanics, you had to build your character from scratch, and you had to find a way to balance your build to be ready for what's to come. It was amazingly refreshing to be honest. Sure it took me some time to like it, mostly 'cause I still feel the graphics aren't what they should be and the characters, while having an interesting design, they lack a palette that makes them unique.”
“This past Tuesday, Epic Games decided to upload Monolith. Basically Paragon is now a whole different game. Taking into account player feedback, mostly for how slow the game was, they applied a lot of changes to the mechanics of the game. Some of the changes would have been enough in the Legacy map to make the game nearly perfect, but no. Monolith is a smaller map than Legacy, character speed is improved but then it creates other issues when you fight other heroes. Certain classes are now having a tougher time. You gain less card power, forcing you to stay on the map longer rather than going back to base to level up. That in theory would be great if you weren't so fucking weak for half of the game. So what are people doing to combat this? They basically have the same builds. Build for attack speed and power, then some life steal and you're good to go. It's boring now, it's more like a shooter. “
I ended up that paragraph with something I regret and therefore won’t repeat. Even if it didn’t happen... I didn’t uninstall the game and have no plans to do so. Not even after it’s gone (unless it keeps affecting my health, more on that later)
“The simplification of Paragon, as a whole, made it more accessible to regular players, you know your regular multiplayer bro. So it's kind of funny to see the rage quitters because the early game is so painfully slow (in terms of levels) and how easy it is to die when you don't understand how minions and towers work. They changed more things in Paragon than what Massive changed in The Division. Paragon is like a different game, one that doesn't require you to be as smart as before. You now stack attack and go play. That's why I'm a little disappointed with the update. Thankfully they are listening to the feedback so perhaps they can find a middle ground between this version and the previous one, because both have great ideas, they just need to remove the bad ones. A match in Paragon is still more fun than a match in Overwatch though.”
2017, a roller coaster of emotions
Last year alone Paragon went through at least 3 big changes. Many think these changes lead to its current downfall but I don’t agree. In a community corner video (I may edit this if I find it again) they said (a bit arrogantly I may add) that Legacy won’t ever come back. Keep in mind that while at first I was one of those that felt betrayed by the changes Monolith brought to the game, I was still playing and having fun. Originally the thought was, “we don’t want to split the community” and at the time I agreed. But looking back I failed to see the same thing they missed, the community was already divided. Bringing Legacy as a mode, or a more strategic version while Monolith would be more fast paced wouldn’t be bad.
Look at Smite and Overwatch, both games that wouldn’t want to have a split community, now their games have plenty of modes. Keeps players in because if they tire of one thing they could test another ‘cause at the end of the day, it’s the heroes that will keep you coming back. So it wasn’t the changes, more like a pinch of arrogance and a lack of modes. The player retention they later complained about, was of two folds, lack of ranked mode and a poor tutorial.
What made Paragon different and special, besides the heroes I will come to love even more than those in other games, was the card system. You’ll find videos from ‘tubers that are now jumping to conclusions just to talk about the closure of a game they never even heard of. You’ll hear them say something about it being pay to win with buying cards and what not, which funny enough was true in 2016, nobody said anything about it then, but all of that was removed when they added the card crafting system so long ago that I don’t even remember when that was implemented.
Building a deck was crucial to success in Paragon, just as much as understanding minions, towers, your role, buffs, rotations and kills. For most of the 2 years, the jungle was crucial too, that was changed in one of the latest patches. Some say for the worse, I’m not too sure it was. If it was simplification they were after, then the current jungle makes the jungler job easier to understand. Farm, get some levels and skills, then go help the lanes. True that had it been a mode in Monolith with Legacy being the more strategic match, it would have been better received, or at least that’s my perception.
People don’t like to feel dumb, even less to realize they actually are. If what I’m writing here makes me sound dumb, then perhaps I am, but it doesn’t matter as this post has nothing but my sincerest thoughts on the matter, even if I’m trashing Overwatch along the way. I think Paragon was a great game, unique in a sea of MOBAs, that people just failed to understand and that the developers didn’t support correctly.
Was Fortnite the issue?
Epic Games is often accused of doing popular things then scrapping them, fad chasers is what they call them. Paragon started when MOBAs were a big thing, just like Fortnite started when Minecraft was a thing. Sure at the time you had Cliffy B on board so he wanted a gritty and scary thing in Fortnite. Fortnite was one of those games that went through development hell, a game that if not by PUBG catching fire (see what I did there) and they being able to rip it off, it would have crashed and burned by now. Fortnite was sold as an Early Access game
I clearly bought into Fortnite’s Early Access, hence the screenshot of the banner unlocked. What made me buy Fortnite when I knew it wasn’t done? If there’s one thing I learned from playing Paragon, is that Epic will change everything trying to find the best system for the gameplay. I wanted to be a part of that too, I wanted to see the game change and grow (keep that expression in mind) over time. I also wanted to thank Epic for Paragon, so I thought this would be the best way to do so.
I was aware of Fortnite before I knew anything about Paragon, I mean like I said, it’s one of those games that went through development hell. I was watching one of their livestreams when they were giving away keys to almost everyone, they didn’t give me one (at the time it was a PC only game) so I never got the chance to try it myself. Over time I stopped paying attention to it as I never got a key, nor even acknowledgement that I wrote them asking for one. Why was I interested in Fortnite? Well, obviously the cartoon graphics as I mentioned before, then there’s the whole building thing which I enjoy a lot (main reason why I like Fallout 4) and Orcs Must Die 2 is one of my favorite Tower Defense games. (Keep that game in mind too)
If I had known that everything they said about working on developing what is now a mode (Save the World) was a lie, I would never have wasted money on Fortnite. The game is as incomplete now as it was on launch. Sure they have had events but almost every resource is going into the Battle Royale mode. Again proving that they are indeed fad chasers. If you feel like I’m wrong here, that it was a logical business decision and that justifies whatever you’ve spent on Fortnite, then fine, that’s what you think. But personally, I can’t recommend anyone to spend money on ANY Epic Games game from now on. This will sound like Blackmail and maybe it sort of is, but I do mean this, if Paragon is completely closed (as in I can’t play it in any way, shape or form) to me, I don’t see myself giving EG money again in the future. I don’t just say things like that and change my mind when it’s convenient, I haven’t bought an EA game since they burned me with SimCity 2013.
The Heroes of Paragon
Paragon has a bunch of great heroes, my favorite hero would come out in May 2017. That would be Phase. I’d say it was love at first sight but it wasn’t, it was love at first try. Before Phase there was Aurora, a controlled type character that had the looks and mobility, not to mention damage output. I often play range roles or control types, while Aurora was melee, I felt she has more mobility than Countess plus her control abilities were great to set up team attacks. I never thought a support would be far more interesting to me.
Phase’s kit was amazing, actually it was too good to the point where she broke the game for some people. One thing is a good support, another is a support good at everything. Good at healing, dealing damage and controlling the enemy. She got nerfed a couple of times, with her healing being affected the most, she’s still my main. For whatever reason, Phase felt like a part of the Phantom Thieves in Persona 5. Granted that after reading her lore I completely understand why that was the case, but the fact that I thought about it without reading it says a lot about the work put into the character itself
There are so many nuances in her animations, even her new launch pad animation. While not as involved or defining as most of the characters’, it still feels like a Phase launch. Her relationship with Shinbi was explored later, it was interesting but it didn’t change what I thought the character was like. She is the character I’ll miss the most, but don’t think she’s the only character I like a lot.

The greatest game I couldn’t play
From September 19, 2017 to January 9 2018, I didn’t have internet access. Hurricane Maria had destroyed our infrastructure leaving many of us in a terrible situation. Originally I was OK, I was prepared for around 2 months of no power, let alone net access. My house held fine (or so it did at first) and my family was OK. Then it started, the following days it started raining what felt like non stop and the damage Maria did, was now evident. Water was pouring in, my things were getting damaged, first I lost my bed, then my desk, well to cut to the point, I pretty much lost my house. I don’t have the money to fix it and with the situation my country is in, I don’t think it’s even worth it.
All I kept thinking about was, man I wish I could play Paragon again. Sounds silly but everyone has something that helps them disconnect from whatever terrible reality they are in. For nearly 4 months that’s all I wanted to do. Late October I moved to my brother’s house, it had power, water would come later but at least it had power. I started playing some games to avoid thinking of what I lost and had yet to lose, as I couldn’t save everything important. Nothing clicked, all I wanted was to play Paragon. I would watch my captures of my game time, over and over and the “music video” I did of my first coop match playing her

I missed the October event, I wanted that mummy Yin skin. I almost missed the winter event skins, got net back right when they extended the event 1 more week, so I was able to buy Morigesh and Aurora’s skins. Those weren’t the last skins I bought, no. The last skin I bought was the Panda skin for Phase. The day before they announced that Paragon would close.
So you see, the answer to my first question, why is this affecting me so much? well, after losing my house and some of my things, the game I wanted to play the most is going away too. It breaks my heart, I saw Paragon from almost every stage in development, highs and lows I loved playing it, I still do. There are terrible games that somehow are still up (Day Z comes to mind) yet this amazing game that is making so many people cry, it’s going away. Or is it?
Were we lied to?
It all points to yes, something happened that they can’t talk about. In their open letter they said
Here inside Epic, we’re talking about the future of Paragon in pretty much the same terms as you’re talking about it. The core challenge is that, of new players who try Paragon, only a small number continue to play regularly after a month. Though Paragon has evolved, no iteration has yet achieved that magical combination of ingredients that make for a sustainable game. (As an aside, the problem isn’t marketing or how to make money with Paragon. We have good ideas that would solve those problems if we can find a way to make Paragon grow.)
So, if the problem wasn’t marketing (which btw it was, it wasn’t even promoted 1/5 of what Fortnite has been) nor making money with it, the problem was making it worth the effort. At least that’s my opinion. Fortnite success came over night, so it was an easy decision to ditch their less popular game even though it is their superior product. But is that even the case here? While Paragon is going to close for us, in China it started its closed beta

What the flying fuck is going on here?
It’s hard not to feel betrayed, it’s hard not to wish Epic Games failure (I try not to) but nothing is harder than seeing a great game close, with some relatively true explanation but no real logic behind it. Closing Paragon, even if it was to make development on Fortnite easier, is a mistake. Leave it in life support until you can come up with better ideas for it. The rank mode they were working on was never implemented in Paragon, instead it was moved to Fortnite. So don’t tell me you did everything for the game, it died because you didn’t support it Epic. It died because you killed it not because we left, I never left. As the final months are quickly going by, and I try to enjoy my final moments with it, in an analogy I rather not say, I feel myself getting sick. I get this massive headaches now, Paragon may have nothing to do with it but coincidentally, they come after playing a few matches. It hurts to know it’ll be gone and that I won’t be Phase anymore.
On the other side, I hope Epic Games have realized that Fortnite is more of a platform than a game. Quickly being able to transform itself from tower defense building game to a battle royale with building elements. I mentioned Orc Must Die series, well their latest game was one of the many MOBA attempts that kind of failed. They had to add the classic gameplay that made them popular in order to keep their fans, because they were bleeding players like crazy. Now, the current version has plenty of modes, kept the MOBA, (EDIT: They removed the MOBA mode) added the classic and created a few more. Fortnite can be Paragonized if they wanted to, they could even add some of the Paragon characters to Fortnite, I would gladly pay for Phase.

Final thoughts
I may be angry and disappointed, and I do mean it, that if I can’t play Paragon or Phase (mostly Phase) any more, that I truly won’t support any more Epic Games games, but I do appreciate the rare opportunity to play such an amazing game. I’m too old to like video games for the gamey aspects of it, I prefer the media side of it, the opportunities it offers as a story telling device that surpasses books and movies. I started my gaming on the Atari 2600, I’m done with jumping around for hours or shooting for no reason. It is extremely rare for me to get attached to a game with no narrative, and the fact that Paragon pulled this off, speaks to the talent working on the game.

In this article we'll perform a test-drive + in-depth review of one of their flagship products - EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard: that's basically a software tool that allows users to undelete files and folders deleted by mistake (or by malicious software/attackers) from various storage media, including Hard Disk Drives, USB pendrives, memory cards, iOS devices, music players, and so on.
Installation
Installing the software is very easy, you just have to choose between picking up the free trial or directly go for the professional edition:

As you can see, they made a dedicated website for each edition: i'll perform the comparison between them later on, for now I'll just pick the free edition and go ahead with the test-drive.
The installation process is pretty much straight-forward, you'll just have to hit Next a number of times: it won't ask you for sponsored softwares and/or adware, which is indeed a good policy that I appreciate a lot from EaseUS products.
Dashboard
Once installed and launched, the tool will welcome you with the following dashboard, which will be the starting place of all our recovery sessions:
Here's the EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Dashboard - and yes, I do actually have quite a lot of HDD/SSD there.
As we can see, the software does a good job in locating all our locally available storage media: we just have to double-click one of them - arguably the one which contained the file(s) we want to recover - and we will access the File Explorer panel.
File Explorer
As we can see from the screenshot below, this basically is a file manager interface specifically designed to help us to identify and recovery our missing/lost/deleted files:
As soon as the window opens, a quick scan will be performed over the storage media surface: the results will be shown in real-time. As expected, all the deleted files are shown nested in their folders and are kept in the same hierarchy as it originally existed. This choice makes it quite easy to focus only on the relevant files (those who are looking for), giving us the chance to easily skip all the others.
File Filter
On the top menu, a filter option can also be used to filter out specific file types, non-recent files and so on:
If you need additional options you can also activate the Advanced Filters by clicking on the bottom item: this will open a modal windows that allows you to further customize your scan with various options (modification time, file size, initial letters, and so on).
Deep Scan
While you navigate the File Explorer through the folder tree looking for the files, a further, more effective scan (deep scan) will be performed in background thorough the whole drive. The deep scan is much more "intense" of the quick scan and will definitely take much longer to finish, depending on the size of the drive. On my 500GB SSD Drive (Samsung 970 Pro) the deep scan took roughly 5 minutes to complete - which is quite fast, considering what it does.
The deep scan uses sector by sector scan thanks to a RAW searching technology specifically developed by EaseUS. For additional info about the deep scan features, we strongly suggest to read this technical overview from the official EaseUS website.
The results of the scan will be shown on separate panes, on the left part of the File Explorer window.
Preview before Recovery
A neat feature which I liked is that all the "found" files can be previewed before being recovered with a right-click:
I personally found it very practical, expecially when recovering few specific files with non-identifying names (images/photos, PDF files, and so on) between a large amount of siblings which I didn't want to recover.
Compare Editions
Unlike most demos and trial versions, the Data Recovery Wizard - Free Edition actually lets you to access all the most important features - and even recover the files! The only functional limitation is the maximum size of the files that you'll be able to recover, which - for the free edition - is capped at 2GB: however, you'll still be able to see all files even when you'll hit such limitation, therefore you'll be able to choose between purchasing the professional edition or not depending on what the tool will find.
Needless to say, both the professional and technician editions feature an unlimited size of recoverable files.
Technician Edition and Help-Desk feature
As for the technician edition, it has the same set of features of the professional one, but it comes with an additional feature that could be rather useful for most resellers, service providers and IT services companies: the license does include a top-tier "technical service" offered by EaseUS and directly aimed to end-customers in order to help them recover data at critical times. In other words, you'll buy the tool and the customer service for your clients, directly handled by EaseUS.

Conclusion
EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard is definitely a valid tool to recover undeleted files and worked well under all our test scenarios, being able to recover deleted data from an existing partition, from a deleted partition, from a corrupted partition, and even deleted data from a partition that had been deleted and then overwritten with another.
We really liked some neat features such as the "preview before recovery" and the advanced filters, which - together with the easeness of use and the fact that the free edition actually works - gives the software quite an edge over the competitors.

15 Must-Have Items For A Remote Work Office
One of the best parts about being a digital nomad, travel blogger & web entrepreneur is the ability to work anywhere in the world from a remote office.
We’ve set up our office on the beach, in the middle of the rainforest, beside a waterfall, on top of a mountain and on the shores of a volcanic lake.
But even though the best part of a remote office is often the location, there are a few other things that you can do to really improve your workspace.
Over the years we’ve found some pretty amazing tools that have helped us to be more ergonomic, more efficient, and more excited to be location independent.
Waking up with a coffee in hand, still in our pyjamas and sitting down at our perfectly set up remote office is still a reminder of how happy we are to be away from our office & oil rig jobs back in Canada.
In this post I’m going to share our favourite gadgets and tools that we use every day to maximize the “cool factor” of our remote office.
These are all add-ons, apps, software, and gadgets to make your location independent work life easier. If you’re a digital nomad or just a person who spends a lot of time working from your computer, then this post is perfect for you!

1. Laptop Stand
This is an essential and once you have one, you won’t ever want to go back to looking down at your laptop screen. By easily elevating your laptop, you can look straight forward, making your remote office much more ergonomic.

2. Cordless Mouse / Trackpad & Keyboard
A cordless keyboard and mouse (or trackpad) is essential if you’re going to have a laptop stand because once you place your computer on the stand, the keyboard and trackpad will be out of reach and at an awkward angle.
Because I use a Macbook Pro, I have an Apple keyboard and trackpad. I love the trackpad, but there are definitely more ergonomic keyboards available on the market both for Mac and for PC.
If you are a Mac user and decide to shop for non-Apple products, Just be sure that they’re compatible with your Mac product and its current operating system (most are).
I still love the tip-tap feeling of a good Apple magic keyboard, so I do forgo some ergonomics for the more compatible set-up.

3. Portable Projector
A portable projector isn’t just a great item for a remote office, it’s an essential travel item that I think everyone should have!
If you do a lot of presentations, Powerpoints etc, then a small, palm-sized projector is essential. But even if you don’t often use them for work, these things are great for watching movies while on the road.
We used to have the Rif6 Cube and it was okay for the time, but the resolution was pretty bad and it just wasn’t very bright. Currently we have the Axxa P300 Pico Projector and we love this thing.
It’s bright enough that you can watch it during the day with the curtains drawn and with 720p HD resolution that fits in the palm of your hand, it’s an incredible piece of tech.
When we first picked the P300 up, we just displayed it on the white wall at our apartment and it looked great. Also, if you’re planning a bit of “van life” you can just use your white sheet draped over the side of your campervan and have a theatre anywhere you stop for the night.
Since we’re living in Grenada for a while, we picked up a cheap projector screen on Amazon and now our theatre room is looking pretty amazing. Pair this with a good set of Bluetooth speakers and you’re good to go.

4. Better Back
If you watch Shark Tank, you may have seen this wonderful contraption come into the “tank” and if you’re like us, you were instantly hooked.
Dariece has already had a history of back pain, so this ergonomic posture control system could be a lifesaver. We’ve both been waiting to be a bit more stationary to pick these things up, but they have been proven to help with lower back pain, inflammation and aches.
Basically a strap goes around your knees and then up around your lower back to make sure you’re keeping your body in the optimal position while working at your remote office.
The product folds up small enough to fit into a purse or a small backpack, so you can pretty much take it anywhere.

5. Wi-fi Range Extender
If you’re sick of trying to connect to the internet and seeing only 2 signal bars, you NEED to pick up a range extender.
I honestly don’t know what we did without this thing. Basically, it’s a tiny little device that you plug into the wall. Once you set it up to be connected to the wifi at your hotel / hostel / cafe / apartment, etc., it can extend the signal by up to 3X.
If there are dead zones in your accommodation, you should get one of these. They’re only about $70 on Amazon, are very compact and they’re a lifesaver for remote offices.
I recommend the NETGEAR AC1200 Wall Plug Version Wi-Fi Range Extender. It has a dual antenna system that offers further range, compact size and amazing speeds.
I can’t count the number of times that we checked into a hotel that claims to have “wi-fi in every room” only to lie on the bed and see that I can’t connect to the signal.
Once I plug-in the range extender, the signal goes up to full bars and suddenly the internet is as fast as it would be if I was sitting right next to the router.

6. Surge Protector & Multi-Plug
There are simply never enough plugins. Whether you’re in your hotel room, at the airport, at a cafe or sitting in your house, every remote worker needs more power!
Not only that, but there are also unreliable outlets all around the world where power surges can quickly destroy your electronics. A good surge protector and multi-plug is an essential item for any remote office.
When you’re shopping for a multi-plug, make sure that it has at least 3 DC power spots, a few USB and USB-C outs and of course, make sure you also have an international adapter so that you can plug it in wherever you are.
For sheer portability and functionality, I prefer the Belkin SurgePlus Swivel Power Adapters, but there are also some other great options on Amazon.

7. Noise Cancelling Headphones
There’s nothing worse than sitting down at a cafe to get some work done and a loud group of people shows up. Pop in a set of noise cancelling earbuds and suddenly the world around you disappears.
Personally, I can work fine with lyrical music, but Dariece prefers to listen to music without words while she works. We use YouTube to search for classical or vocal-free playlists, but you can also easily find them on Spotify and Pandora.
To keep it compact and portable, I prefer to use earbud-style, noise canceling headphones. They don’t cancel as much noise as the full ear covering style, but they are about 1/100th the size and weight.
For anything audible, I always recommend Bose. They make an amazing set of noise cancelling earbuds (Bose QualityComfort 20), but at $250, they’re a bit steep.
For a bit of a cheaper set, you may want to check out TaoTronics Active Noise Cancelling Ear Buds which come in at a much more reasonable $50 or so.
If you’re not a person who tends to lose small things while travelling, consider picking up a pair of wireless bluetooth noise cancelling headphones.

8. Power Bank
No remote office is complete without a good power bank. No matter how many power outlets there are, there can always be outages or places get too busy to plug in.
The power bank technology has improved drastically over the years and now there are power banks that can even charge DC outlet devices like older laptops and camera batteries.
Power banks that have USB and DC charge functionality tend to be a bit larger, but they also offer a lot more juice. Some power banks can charge a 3 devices at once including a laptop from 0% – 100% and an iPhone over 20 times!

9. External Hard Drive
Even though we upgraded our laptops to have over 2TB of SSD disk space each, we still love to have an external hard drive.
Make sure if you’re shopping for external hard drives that you pick up an SSD and not an HDD. HDD (Hard Disk Drives) are the older model of hard drives and they have a very tiny needle and disk to read the data. This means that they’re extremely fragile.
I’ve personally dropped a 1TB HDD hard drive and lost all of my data. Sure you can recover the data by taking it in and spending more money than the hard drive is worth, but why not just buy a more durable SSD in the first place. They’re faster, more compact and most importantly, more durable.

10. 1080p Webcam & A Good Microphone
Our job sometimes requires us to do interviews for podcasts, YouTube and big media. There’s nothing worse than watching back an interview and having poor quality audio and video.
It just doesn’t look professional. We’re also now creating WordPress Blogger Courses and I wanted to make sure that my course looks and sounds as professional as possible.
You may be thinking that the built-in webcam and mic that came with your laptop is just fine, and if you don’t ever use them for creating video content, voiceovers or interviews, then you’re probably right.
But if you ever record audio or video with your computer, you should pick up a cheap mic and webcam on Amazon.
I highly recommend having a good mic. Believe it or not, it’s actually more important (in my opinion) than a good camera. By having your voice full and clear, you’ll be able to present your message in a professional way.
We’ve used the Samsung GoMic in the past and it’s decent, but now we’re using a (much larger) Pyle USB mic. The best USB mic on the market right now is probably the Blue Yetti Blackout Edition and it’s still compact enough to travel with.
For our webcam we have a Logitech c615 1080p Webcam and it looks great. If you want to have some shots further away from your computer, I’d also recommend picking up a USB cord extension.

11. A Good Electronics Bag
If you find yourself heading at cafes or co-working spaces to set up your remote office, then you may want to pick up a good travel rucksack for your electronics.
There are so many on the market, but the best ones will be lightweight, easily organized and often have their own power banks built in. I still love Vanguard bags and highly recommend them as they’re durable, lightweight and super well-thought-out.
I used the Vanguard Uprise II bag for my Phantom drone when I had it, but now with the much smaller Mavic and Spark drones on the market, you really don’t need such a large backpack. The best overall electronics bag right now is probably the eBags Pro Series Backpack.

12. aText
A good remote office is one that helps you be as efficient as possible and this cheap app for Mac has saved me hundreds of hours over the years. It really is one of the best productivity apps out there.
Basically it allows you to type special codes that you set yourself and it will auto-paste content for you.
For example, I have an aText code saved for every one of my affiliate links. So if I am writing an email or a blog post and I want to add my affiliate link for World Nomads Insurance, I simply type WNlink and it pastes the URL for me.
Similarly, I have an aText code for a lot of different email templates.
As a blogger, I get requests for ads, sponsors and brand ambassadorships on a regular basis.
If the person sending the email sounds serious, I’ll type them a personalized email, but 90% of the time I just type in my code and automatically paste a 4 – 5 paragraph email explaining what we can offer, what our rates are, how we can work together etc.
If you get a lot of the same questions via email, aText is great. For example, we have people emailing us about where to rent a motorbike in Viñales, Cuba all of the time (even though I wrote the address in our guide).
Instead of emailing each person back separately, I just type “cubabike” in the email and it automatically pastes:

thanks for emailing us and for reading our blog! You can rent motorbikes on the main road in Viñales near the bus station. We paid $20 / day for 3 days, but I believe they cost $25 per day for shorter-term rentals. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions.

13. Better Touch Tool
Another great little app for Mac, Better Touch Tool allows you to program specific functions into your trackpad.
If you’re already a Mac user, you’ll know that Apple comes with a few of these standard gestures like 2-finger scroll down, 5 finger together brings up the app window etc., but with BTT, you can program a nearly unlimited amount of custom gestures.
For example, you can make a 3 finger click to open up Google Chrome.
You can even program a series of finger gestures to do a wide range of complex requests on your Mac. I have so many of these set that I can basically do everything I want right from my trackpad.
It may not sound like that big of a time-saver, but once you’ve mastered and memorized a dozen or so custom gestures, you’ll shave milliseconds off of every command you do on your computer.
Those milliseconds quickly add up and over the course of a month you could be saving hours.

14. Handpresso
Waking up to no alarm, rolling over in bed and getting to work in your pyjamas is great, but what would it be without a delicious cup of espresso coffee?
The Handpresso is one of our favourite travel tools and it really does add to our remote office, especially when we’re travelling and staying in hotels & guest houses that don’t have an espresso machine.
All you have to do is buy some espresso coffee grounds, pack a pod, pump up the Handpresso, add some hot water and voila! You have a delicious cup of coffee every time.
At the time of writing, we have a nice electric espresso machine in our house in Grenada, but for when on the road, the Handpresso is our go-to.
I really can’t recommend this thing enough. It’s a bit heavy, but if you’re like Dariece and I and you don’t enjoy filtered coffee, then this is a must-have travel item for sure.

15. Wireless Hot Spot
We never travel without a local SIM card because you never know when your wifi is going to go out randomly. That’s why a portable hot spot is a must-have travel item.
If you already have an iPhone, you can likely just tether your computer to the mobile data by following these steps, but if you want to have multiple devices hooked up, don’t want to waste your phone battery or want further range, you should definitely consider a mobile hot spot device.
For speed, portability, ease of use and nice design, I’d say that the Huawei E5787s-33a is the best on the market. It supports up to 10 devices at once, offers 10 hours of battery life at full use and works pretty much anywhere in the world.
It also has blazing fast speeds at up to 300mb/s when hooked up to a good 4G/LTE network.
You can pair a wireless hot spot with a good international SIM card as well. These cards tend to be a bit slower than local SIMs, but they are still convenient for when you first arrive at airports and don’t have a local SIM yet.

In Closing
Starting to shop for remote office gadgets on Amazon can be a slippery slope! There are just so many cool products available on the market and as this laptop lifestyle movement continues to grow worldwide, we’re seeing more and more nomad-friendly products available.
While I have seen plenty more items online and in stores, these are the ones that we’ve found that we actually believe to be essential in creating the perfect remote office.

How To Fix Windows Error Code 0xC0000225?
Seeing the 0xc0000225 error on Microsoft Windows 10 when you try to boot your PC? This common error is a huge pain because it prevents your PC from booting at all.
Thankfully, you can usually fix this error with a bit of work. We’ll show you how to fix error code 0xc0000225 on Windows 10.
What Is Windows Error Code 0xC0000225?
You’ll see this error code when you try to boot your PC. Windows displays it with a message saying Your PC needs to be repaired and the vague An unexpected error has occurred. Sometimes it also says A required device isn’t connected or can’t be accessed.
Microsoft Windows throws this error when it can’t find the correct system files for booting. This vital information is known as Boot Configuration Data, or BCD. When you turn on your PC, it tells Windows how to boot properly.
This error is more common on disks that use the newer UEFI specification with the GPT partition scheme than older setups.
Windows’ message about it is a little vague, so we’ll need to put on our Windows troubleshooting caps to solve it.

What Causes Error Code 0xC0000225?
Since this error deals with corrupted system files, it often pops up after an OS upgrade (such as upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10).

It can also occur if your PC shuts down during an important update, from malware attacking system files or even from faulty hardware.
Follow the below steps to hopefully fix your issue, no matter the cause.
Step 0: Create A Windows 10 Install Disk
Like other boot errors, you can’t troubleshoot this from inside Windows. Thus, you’ll need to have a Windows 10 install disk handy so you can run repair tools from there. Follow our guide to creating Windows 10 installation media to obtain the needed disk.

You’ll need a flash drive with at least 8GB of space, or a DVD. Note that creating the Windows 10 disk will erase everything present on the drive, so we recommend using a blank flash drive or DVD.
Once you’ve created your install media, insert it into your computer. Press the appropriate key to open the boot menu, and load the Windows 10 disk from your external device.

Step 1: Windows Automatic Repair
First, you’ll want to try Windows 10’s built-in troubleshooter. This has the system automatically check for issues and attempt to fix them on its own. Hopefully, it will repair your corrupted BCD so you can get back to work.

After booting from your Windows 10 install disk, wait until you see the Windows Setupscreen. Confirm your language options, then click Next. When you see the Install nowscreen, click the Repair your computer link in the bottom-left instead.
You’ll see a menu of options; select Troubleshoot then Advanced options. From the Advanced options menu here, select Automatic Repair. Let the process go through, then restart your computer when it’s done.
Try to boot normally again. If error code 0xc0000225 doesn’t pop up, you’ve fixed the issue!
Step 2: Run Manual SFC And Check Disk Scans
If Windows’s automatic repair didn’t work, you can try a few important system scans yourself. To do so, repeat the above process to open the Advanced options menu, but don’t select Automatic Repair. Instead, choose Command Prompt to open a command line interface.
First, run the System File Checker (SFC) command, which checks for corrupt or missing Windows system files and tries to repair them:
sfc /scannow
After this completes, run the Disk Check scan to check for errors on your hard disk. Use the following command, replacing c: with the letter of your main partition if you’ve changed it:
chkdsk c: /r
Once you’ve run both of these scans, reboot and try to load up your PC normally again. Hopefully, the error won’t pop up anymore.
Step 3: Rebuild The BCD
If you’re still having problems, the next step you can try is a command to rebuild the BCD. Since this is often what causes the error, this might be the trick for you.
Again, boot from your Windows 10 installation media and open the Advanced optionsmenu. Select Command Prompt this time, too. Run the following commands one at a time:
bootrec /scanos bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot bootrec /rebuildbcd
The first command scans your disk(s) for compatible installations, which can help it find your “missing” Windows installation. Commands two and three write a new MBR and boot sector to your disk. The final command scans again for Windows installations after the fixes.
Reboot your computer once more and hopefully, this will clear up the error 0xc0000225 message.
Step 4: Set Your Active Partition
Windows allows you to change the active partition so you can tell the system where to boot from. If this somehow becomes incorrect, you can change it to point Windows to the correct partition.
Go through the above to open a Command Prompt from your Windows repair disk. Type the following commands one at a time to open the Disk Partition tool and list your available disks:
diskpart list disk
You’ll see a series of entries labeled Disk 0, Disk 1, and so on. Your internal hard drive is most likely Disk 0—you can tell by the Size which is which. Type the following one at a time, replacing the X with 0 or whatever the number of your HDD is:
select disk X list partition
That second command will show all partitions on your internal drive. Your main partition may be 0; it was 4 (marked as Primary) for me.
Then enter these commands, replacing the X with your partition number:
select partition X active
Exit the Command Prompt, reboot, and see if your issue is fixed.
This marks the partition you have Windows installed on as the one Windows uses to boot. If this somehow changed and resulted in the 0xc0000225 error, this can put everything back the way it was.
Step 5: Check For Faulty Hardware
At this point, you’ve done a good amount of the software troubleshooting to fix this error. If you still can’t boot, you should consider checking your hard disk for physical issues.
Check to make sure the drive cable isn’t damaged, and reseat it if possible. Depending on your computer manufacturer, you also may have some built-in diagnostic tests that can check for drive issues.

Step 6: Try System Restore Or Reinstall Windows
If this problem started recently, you can try a System Restore from the recovery disk to go back in time. Boot from your install media again, navigate to the Advanced options menu, and select System Restore. Pick a recent restore point and Windows will return to that point without affecting your personal files.
If you don’t have any restore points or the restore doesn’t fix the issue, it’s best to reinstall Windows to replace the broken system files and get everything else fresh. This is time-consuming but it’s your best bet if you’ve gotten this far.
