In 1607, Claudio Monteverdi created his Orfeo, for the Carnival opening at the Court Theatre of Duke Vincenzo I in Mantua. Billed as a ‘musical fable’, here was a new form where characters are brought to life with poignant human feelings. Orfeo’s dramatic power gave birth to what we call opera today. As in the original performance in an intimate space in Mantua, Garsington’s summer 2022 production sees the singers and musicians very close; the instrumentalists are part of the action, onstage and visible. Early music specialist Laurence Cummings conducts the musicians of The English Concert. Arielle Smith choreographs singers and dancers; the chorus is a constant presence and critical to the storytelling. Ecstatically received by audiences and critics alike, here is an evening to do justice Monteverdi's genius and power to encapsulate the human condition through music, movement and song.

if someone who knows literally nothing about opera whatsoever were interested in checking one out..... what would you recommend
Operas are wonderful and I am happy for that someone.
Picking an opera:
I personally think you can't really go wrong with the big Mozart operas (Don Giovanni, Nozze di Figaro, Zauberflöte, Entführung aus dem Serail). But maybe the person loves Russian literature and would prefer to see Pikovaya Dama. Or maybe they're already interested in baroque music and would love an opera by Gluck or Händel. Or maybe they know some famous tunes from Carmen or La Traviata and would like to hear those in context. Or they like a play or novel that happens to have been adapted into an opera.
If they have absolutely no point of reference I'd recommend digging around in operablr a bit and seeing if anything speaks to them, most of the popular operas and eras have their fans here.
Where to see it:
If it's an option, I would recommend going to the nearest opera house and seeing any famous and popular opera they're playing, ideally a few different ones.
If not, there are a lot of recordings online. There's operavision on youtube, medici.tv and other paid subscriptions, some of them offering free trials, and free broadcasts from various opera houses and TV stations. @princesssarisa and/or @leporellian had a good post of online resources some time ago, I can't find it right now.
Or just join tumblr user Antony @malcolm-f-tucker's opera streams every week! They're fun!
How to see it:
When you've picked an opera to see, I recommend reading a plot summary and maybe also some comments on the production in advance. Operas are often staged in a way that assumes you already know what happens, especially the most famous and popular ones. Or just go and let it wash over you, that's what I did as a student and it's why I still have no idea what happens in half the operas I've seen. Very enjoyable in its own way.

Sick, I really like opera but have been a bit defeated by it being so aggressively cis (and for the mostpart, het), but there was a Lili Elbe opera that premiered last October and its available for free on OperaVision on youtube. So I'm watching that. I'm not far in so can't make any enthusiastic commentary just yet but hey, it exists! One (1) trans woman got a major opera role for the first time very recently.
It is very much the "yeah there's roles for trans people.... as long as they're playing trans people :)" stage but its better than nothing innit. This is an artform where major companies are cheerfully patting themselves on the back for staging new works by black composers for the first time in the 2020s so like. They're getting there...

そうそう、クリスティアン・シュプック振付 チューリヒ・バレエ「冬の旅」も見損ねまくっているのでもうこれもソフト買ったほうがいいんじゃないのか。シュプックはチューリヒからベルリン国立バレエに移るそうですね。どの演目もヴィジュアルがあまりにも好きすぎるのでチューリヒバレエのシュプック振付全部観たいしソフトもほしい。

Don Giovanni mini reviews
On the occasion of my DG epilogue post getting 35 notes, and since people have been tagging their favourite versions. Here are my mini reviews of the productions in that post.
Rome 2019: I've posted about this one. It's a creative production with a lot of nice ideas and great singers (love the coloratura Elvira). The video quality could be better and the act 1 finale goes a bit off the rails staging wise but overall I like it. On YouTube from the opera house.
London 2008: has a bunch of Anglosphere opera stars in it, pretty good. Lots of spectacle, but the only scene I actually remember is Don G being super horny for death (see above). Available on DVD.
Paris 2019: the three hour Armani commercial. It's fine, very pretty, strong acting, some cool ideas. Available on the Paris Opera's streaming platform.
Met Opera 2000: Bryn Terfel is a fantastic Don Giovanni, I honestly didn't expect that. The production itself is pretty forgettable but well done. Probably on Met on demand?
Salzburg 1987: first Don Giovanni I ever saw, long ago. Can't be objective about this one, it's legendary for a reason. Officially on YouTube.
Aix 2002: Bauhaus DG, not really my thing, music sounds good. Did make me understand why people like Peter Mattei. Not sure where I found it.
London ROH: there are a bunch of recordings of this production with different casts, I watched them all, didn't like any of them. Can be found on the ROH website if you really want to. CW: ugly
Lyon 2018: this is a pretty weird one, only recommended if you've seen a couple of normal versions already. Personally I really like it. Relatable. The "vedrai carino" and "non mi dir..." choreographies are inspired. Was on TV at some point. CW: actual CW for this one
Barcelona 2020: very beautiful, very nice characterisations, I love it. Lots of cuts, probably due to pandemic curfews. No "tesoro"! Was on Operavision back in the day. CW: Pisaroni in old man makeup
Aix 2017: this is the best thing I have ever seen in my life, watch it today if you haven't yet. Perfect in every way. It's on YouTube from the broadcaster.
These aren't all my favorites, they just have notable epilogues (or lack thereof). My favorite is among them though.

オルフェウスとエウリディケの物語が題材のオペラとダンスを今、配信で観るためのメモ
オルフェウスの物語はギリシア神話のひとつで、死んだ妻を冥界に迎えに行くが失敗する、という話です。
この題材は音楽・舞台芸術でもよくつかわれていて、オペラではモンテヴェルディ作曲の『オルフェオ』、グルック作曲の『オルフェオとエウリディーチェ』が有名どころです。
なんでこんな記事を書いているかというと、ここ数年プレイしているゲームの「第五人格(IdentityV)」の基礎構造がオルフェウスの物語だからで、さらに現在ゲーム内で開催されているイベントが直球でオペラ『オルフェオ』モチーフだからです。アプリ立ち上げのオープニングの曲がモンテヴェルディになっているので。
ゲーム中で題材にされているのはモンテヴェルディの『オルフェオ』ですがグルックの『オルフェオとエウリディーチェ』作品も並べていきます。オルフェウスの物語は様々な方法で語られているのでいろんなものがある。
というわけで、観ましょう。
一番アクセスしやすいだろう、youtubeのOperaVisionのチャンネルを紹介します。

これは新国立劇場の『オルフェオとエウリディーチェ』。勅使川原三郎振付作品です。
音楽はグルックのほう。日本語字幕が選択可能です。
ダンスの要素が強めの作品で、歌手の他にダンサーがいて、歌＋踊りで場面場面が物語られます。
ここまで、OperaVisionの作品群はフル尺で見られます。いままでオペラ見たことない方も、気軽に視聴してみてください。家で見る最大の利点は気軽さです。中断もできるし面白そうなとこまで飛ばしてもいいし寝落ちてももう一回見られるしBGMにもできる。
私は舞台を観に劇場に行くのがもちろん好きですが、映像は映像で好きなように楽しめていいと思っています。まあ海外のオペラハウスなんてそうそう行く機会ないから日本に住んでたら映像で観るしかないけどね。
ここからは私の好きな作品紹介です。作品鑑賞はソフトを探して買うか配信課金するかしてください。
私がオペラ『オルフェオ』を意識したのはジョルディ・サヴァール指揮のリセウ大歌劇場のオルフェオの舞台映像を見てめっちゃいいなって思ったのが確かはじまり。↓これね。

これDVD持っているんですが、劇場がすごく良いね……ってまじまじ見てしまう。演出とか演奏とかもちろんいいんですが箱の力が強いと思う。もともと古楽が好きなので、楽器の音だけでも楽しいっていう気持ちはあるけど、映像で観たいやつです。映像ソフトはもう入手困難だと思うんだけど、どこかクラシック系のVODで配信してたりするかな？ 色々あるから調べきれてないんだよね。
音源だけなら各種サブスクリプションで配信もあります。

何回モンテヴェルディ聴くんよってなるんですが、個々のプロダクションの出来や好き嫌いはともかく、何度も語られ直すという現象を含めて作品で強さなんだろうなと思います。
舞台演出で好き��のといえばロバート・ウィルソン演出、スカラ座の『オルフェオ』。

何が好きっていうか、ロバート・ウィルソン演出のブレない様式美が好きなんですよね。白塗り人物＆ポーズ＋構図。苦手な人は苦手だっていうのもわかる。トンチキ且つつまんねえっていう声が聞こえる。でも私は好きなんで……グルックの『オルフェオとエウリディーチェ』も演出しているみたいなんですがそっちは観れてないです。どんなんだろうな。
