The Stone Dragon series is one of those things that started as a means of using a particular medium, and then took on a life of its own. This is the first set of several for this series.

The first of the series, Jade Fury, was an excuse to use up a gold paint pen before it dried out. I wanted a challenging design with a relatively simple color scheme - yes, I used black as my dark value, which art school tells us never to do. I am such a rebel. Oogityboogity! Since I, being a generally good art student, never used black to shade, this made the project fun and simple. Aside from the dragon's mouth, I think there are only three shades of green, plus black, and the gold paint pen in that project.
...But it was so much fun...
That I decided to do another one, this time in reds. Jasper Storm uses the same ideas - black as my dark value and red/orange for my colors, plus a generous application of the (still not dried out) gold paint pen.
And having done greens and reds, now I needed to do blues. Lapis Lazuli Breeze breaks the mold somewhat by using a silver paint pen, but I still used the simple black + blues coloring technique for it.
...Then I wanted to try something opalescent. I decided to forego the black shading for Opal Sun (the one with the pink belly and yellow dorsal ridge), and instead went full-bore with the entire pencil box at my beck and call. This was one of the most challenging coloring projects I'd done at that time, where every individual scale is taken into account in terms of its overall color and its relative value within the layered structure of the drawing.
Later, I used the pencil drawings I'd scanned for each dragon as templates from which I built lineart that went into my first Dragon Adventure coloring book. I colored several of them - those are the "color variation" ones from the title list above, and I have included them here next to the original color schemes. I really enjoy playing with variations on a theme.
All of these have been colored with Prismacolor pencils - most were done with Prisma Premiers, some of the variants were Prisma Scholars.
