SVG caught up with The Video Call Center CEO Larry Thaler to learn more about how AirFirst enhances operational efficiencies and to get his take on the first in-person NAB Show since 2019.
What was your company’s strategy heading into this NAB Show, the first one in-person in three years?
It was the first time that we’ve publicly shown AirFirst, the new platform that we’ve put out. We’ve been doing remotes through smartphones for seven years now, and all of our knowledge is in this platform. All of the efficiencies gained in our operation are built into AirFirst.
Inevitably, for example, [prospective clients we met with] were saying, “We install all these Skype TX boxes, and we’re struggling to keep up with the volume. It’s too much work. People don’t know their Skype names; we don’t know whether they’re downloading Skype TX or have downloaded Skype for business, which doesn’t work at all. We’re getting lousy results.” We can help you, and we could take hours and hours out of your day by making the connections really efficient. There were lots of people who came to us and said, “We’ve been jury-rigging with Zoom or [Microsoft] Teams.” Those people were really drawn to the platform, and having the opportunity to show that to them was just great.
Can you tell us more about AirFirst? What does it deliver to the live-production industry?
AirFirst was really the only thing we were showing at [NAB 2022]. Of course, we still have our services business, Caller Cloud, but, quite frankly, what we wanted to do is to show that this capability can be in anybody’s hands and that we not only are willing to share that technology with people but are willing to train people in what we do. Attendees were very excited.
We had a very major broadcaster from the Middle East who came by who was struggling to do the volume of remotes that they have. One of the things that we were sharing with people was that we have a very large news customer now who’s doing approximately 25,000 remotes a year and we took 20 minutes or more off each of those remotes. When you multiply that out, that’s a big number of hours saved. We’re very excited to be doing that — not only for them but for other people as well.
Were there any additional trends or common pain points that emerged as you talked to NAB 2022 visitors throughout the week?
I think the thing that we heard the most was that, at the beginning of the pandemic, people installed whatever they could find as quickly as they could in order to get on the air. An “any port in the storm” kind of strategy. Nobody expected it to last this long. Not only are they having to use those same workflows that were hurried together, [but] they are seeing the volume of work that they’re doing in that way growing, and they can’t handle it. That’s when you need something that can handle the volume and can handle it across the whole team. That seemed very valuable to them.
What was your general assessment of NAB 2022? How did it feel being back at an in-person trade show after so long?
We had a great show. First of all, it was great to get in touch with people in person again. It felt really nice. It felt like the world was a bit more normal. We found that people were drawn to what we had, and it was great to see some old faces and meet so many new people as well.

Asphodel, Travis, and Ivan
I wrote a story a while ago for a creative writing class, this was years ago, and I always wanted to come back to it and add onto it. So I did. I won’t be posting any of that first part cause it’s old and I’ve changed my mind about how those events happened, but this will be easy to read without that context anyways.
Enjoy
Asphodel, Travis, and Ivan escaped the collection of satellite living people, mostly from earth, who had escaped after being experimented on by a government on earth. They blew up the base as they left, killing most of the people living there. Now they’re off to find their next adventure in space, still not entirely sure what they’re looking for.
Asphodel sat down in the copilot chair next to Travis just as he was about to start a difficult flight through an asteroid belt. Ivan leapt up into her lap with an annoyed meow as she opened her bag of snacks, ready to help Travis navigate through it with her ability to calculate angles, speeds, and inertia. The fact that she knew exactly how to get through such an obstacle course, added to Travis’s piloting skills and slight mind reading abilities (and Ivan’s snarky remarks), made it so the three could get to places that most space shuttles and ships couldn’t get through. Which made them the highest paid delivery team for the more, well, illegal goods, of the star system.
“We better hurry,” Travis said, nosing forward into the scrambled mess of space junk. “I think we got pinged while you were in the bathroom.”
Asphodel made an annoyed face and nodded, her eyes speeding between objects and making quick calculations. “Hurry up, then.”
Travis revved up the small craft into the gaps they found together. Ivan fell asleep in Asphodel’s lap as they flew smoothly through the moving piles of rock and metals.
“Did you check on the cargo while you were back there?” Travis asked.
Asphodel stayed silent as she watched the rocks go by.
“Asp?” Travis asked, not taking his eyes from the scene.
Asphodel sighed. “Why do you always make me answer out loud? You already know the answer.”
“I do, but it’s good for you to talk to other people,” Travis said, a half smile coating the tone of his voice. “It’s called ‘socializing.’”
Asphodel rolled her eyes. “Not this again,” she moaned.
“Asphodel, you’ve been a lone wolf, I get it. But you really need to learn how to verbally communicate, even if I can tell what your answer is. When you leave me, you’re going to need how to talk to people.”
Asphodel gave some sort of caustic remark in response, but she hardly paid attention to what she said. ‘When you leave me.’ It was expected, Asphodel was painfully logical and practical due to being grown in a government lab and raised as an experiment and human computer. Travis himself was a slight pessimist as he could tell what people were thinking all the time. Of course he would know that as soon as he was no longer useful to Asphodel, she would leave him for a more beneficial partner. But it…. Bothered her. She’d never been bugged by something like that before, but this bothered her.
She kept those thoughts deep in her mind, though. Travis could only read the surface and she had very quickly learned how to keep him from reading the thoughts she wanted to keep a secret.
Travis looked into one of the monitors and cursed. “There’s a cruiser following us. We’ll have to talk about your socializing issues later.”
Asphodel rolled her eyes and pulled up the weapons controls on the monitor in front of her.
She fired off a round of warning shots, Travis and her working in tandem to steer and shoot. The poor cruiser behind them was having the hardest time trying to keep up. It shot blasts after them, most of them flying wide. In one fraction of a moment, the cruiser got a very very lucky shot which clipped one of the engine’s of the shuttle before getting slightly unlucky and crashing into a large piece of debris. Asphodel caught sight of a pack of cigarettes and an old comic book, at least three decades old, being flung forward on the explosion from the cruiser. Her attention was immediately drawn back to their own situation as the shuttle started throwing very angry warnings that woke Ivan up, making him a very angry cat.
Travis hissed as he wrestled with the controls. “Asp, find us a place to land.”
Asphodel glanced around the dull constellation of rocks and space trash and said, “Up 6 degrees and towards the Capulita Majora.”
Travis nodded and strained to get the shuttle through the tight spaces. Asphodel listened to the scraping of debris against their craft, calculating damages based solely on the noises she heard.
They managed to limp through the belt and into a clear space where both were surprised to see a small space shop set up within the belt. Travis guided the shuddery craft into the bay of the shop and turned it off once he was parked. It was a testament to his skills as a pilot that it only took him one try to park the shuttle, even with it shuddering as it was.
“Probably don’t have to worry about our merchandise being called in to the Govs here,” Travis said, almost to himself as he already knew Asphodel was thinking the same thing. The shop did indeed look fairly shady.
Travis stood up and stooped through the shuttle. He popped open the door and wandered out onto the platform. Asphodel followed him out, Ivan in her arms. Travis climbed up onto the wing and tied his jacket around his waist and crouched over the engine, taking a look at it.
Asphodel watched him as he tinkered, lifting up some of the panels to look into it. He sighed deeply and jumped down. “That’s what I thought,” he sighed. “It was a whisker shot.”
“You know I don’t understand your slang,” Asphodel said with a sneer.
“It means that the shot caused metal whiskers.”
“What, like tin whiskers?”
“Exactly. But since tin isn’t used in welding anymore cause of that issue, they figured out how to make beams that cause other metals to whisker.”
Asphodel handed off Ivan and climbed up to look. She pushed back her choppy hair to have a look at the whiskers. Sure enough, thin wisps of metal shot off from the welds and connected to other parts of the engine, shorting everything out.
“I didn’t know they were putting those in cruisers, though. They’re shooting through technology at an uncomfortable pace, I would have to say.” Travis commented, stroking Ivan thoughtfully.
Asphodel just nodded, studying the pattern of the silvery threads of metal.
“Hey, you two!”
Ivan gave a disgruntled brrp as the three travelers turned to see a curmudgeonly man walking across the docking platform. His outfit was dirty and covering in engine grease. He was missing two fingers and his pleasant resting face.
“What’s wrong with your shuttle? I have paying customers who use that spot,” the grizzled man growled, his piercing eyes glaring out at them from under bushy wire brows.
“Got hit with a whisker beam,” Travis explained, leaning against the shuttle. “I’ll have it fixed momentarily, then we’ll be out of your hair.”
“Let me see.”
Travis stepped out of the way as the man clambered up, tools jingling in his deep set pockets. He peered in and scoffed. “You’re going to need my help,” the old man declared. “See that one?”
Travis set Ivan down and peered over the man’s grease stained shoulder. “Oh…. yeah. I see what you mean. How much do you need paid?”
The old man eyed Travis, Asphodel, and Ivan. “We’ll talk about it. You kids follow me.”
He rattled off and Travis followed. Asphodel fell into step beside him, Ivan walking just ahead of them with his tail in the air in a sort of snobby way, as if he did not approve of where they were at the moment.
Asphodel studied the broken down ships and shuttles scattered across what was effectively a scrap yard and felt the same as the spotted tabby. She quickly identified where the atmosphere was being thrown from and was glad to see that this gravity/ozone generator was in good repair, unlike the ones often found at drop off and pick up sites for the smuggled goods they sold.
There was a small hut found in the middle of the muddle. The old man leading the way inside said, “I’m Rick. I can tell you’re smugglers. No need to worry about it, though. I’m the repair guy for the smugglers that can make it this far into the belt.”
“You’re trying to get us on your list of regular customers,” Travis said with a wry smile and a knowing look.
Rick just nodded. “I can repair and replace, easy. And it’ll last longer than any other shady duct tape, spit, and a prayer shop.”
“Oh? How do you reason?” Asphodel said, taking another look around the place. The hut was a mess of nuts and bolts, welding materials scattered all over the area just like outside.
Rick grinned, showing teeth that we’re too bad off despite everything else. “Well, the fact that I have repeat customers proves it all on its own, doesn’t it.”
“Because you have such wonderful service,” Asphodel said spitefully.
“Oh, not at all. I’m downright unpleasant at times. The real reason being that when other shops do the work the customer winds up dead.”
With that statement on the table, Rick turned and disappeared into a back room before coming back with some kind of sandwiches. “Here, you smugglers don’t eat as often as they really should.”
Travis took it without hesitation and bit into it. Asphodel slowly took one of her own. Rick narrowed his eyes at them, Travis especially.
“You’re too trusting,” he commented, picking up the last sandwich and offering a piece of the lunch meat to Ivan.
Travis laughed. “Not quite.” He tapped the side of his head with the sandwich before taking another bite.
“Ah,” Rick said with only the slightest hint of distaste. “You’re one of them.”
Travis gave a conceding nod.
“So, about the whiskers?” Asphodel asked, still investigating her sandwich.
“I’ll do them tomorrow.”
“So… you want us to stay here?”
“Yeah. Just sleep on your shuttle.”
Travis and Asphodel shared a look.
“Before you go to bed, there is a way to pay me for the work,” the old man said with a grin. “I need supplies for groceries but there are some cruisers parked out there, waiting for me to come out. I can already tell you two would do much better against them than I would.”
Travis shrugged. “Which ship are we taking?”
Rick grinned. “Old Betty. She was my craft when I was still young and had some of my toes.”
Asphodel gave Travis a whiney look. Travis only laughed at her. “Come on, Asp,” he said warmly. “It’ll be fun.”
“That’s what you said about the time we shuttled six magawarths across two systems.”
“That was fun.They were so cute.”
Ivan made an offended noise to match Asphodel’s glare.
“I mean, I had fun.”
“Let’s just get this over with,” Asphodel sighed, picking up Ivan. She was pretty sure this wasn’t going to end well, but what else were they going to do?
She told herself that, stifling the realization that she could easily have fun with this if she let herself.

Ans — Yes. NiftyPlanet is a web.3.0 platform that built based on Ethereum blockchain. From the start it is place where users can buy NFTs from the famous people and original NiftyPlanet NFTs. In the future, our platform will be fully decentralized and be managed by a Foundation.
Q2. What are the advantages of Nifty Planet to other alternatives in the Blockchain field?
Ans — I would say that there are many differences between the NiftyPlanet and other NFT markets but 2 of them are the biggest to us. First of all we are preparing for any drop together with creators in advance. Including pricing, special mechanics, advertisement. That is why all NFTs have bigger values for the holders than NFTs from rest of the markets. Any creator have to pass Due Diligence process. But at the same time we are web.3.0 system it means that all the assets are under the user’s control.

Ans — Well, we really want to push the limits of NFT’s and so we are and will be actively seeking new partnerships with individuals and businesses that have great new ideas of ways to use NFT technology for Art, for business, for communication, for socializing and more. We don’t claim to know it all and we all know that there is power in numbers, and so we are open to the ideas, brains and creativity of all of those in our community and hope they openly share and offer their ideas with us. Q3. Telling about real world adoption. Most of the user are still not aware about Blockchainchain and Blockchainchain related products. So, how Your project can raise awareness about their project with non-crypto users too?
Ans — You are exactly right. For the first time in maybe thousands of years, we "common" people have a chance to take back our freedoms from the "Mis-Leaders" and Elite classes, and create wealth without worry of being extorted by overreaching governments. So this is one of our big goals. We want to help more and more people become involved in blockchain and cryptocurrency and understand its implications and usefulness. By selecting our initial creators carefully by hand, we can select artists and creators and influencers that also are in line with our goals to wake more people up to the freedom, opportunities and benefits of blockchain, and are willing to reach out to their vast numbers of fans, most of whom are not aware of blockchain, and invite them to become involved in it by learning and talking about and buying and selling the NFT’s created by those artists and influencers. And we as a platform will do everything we can to onboard those new members by providing a friendly and easy to use platform.
Q4. You plan to have an IDO (Initial Dex Offering) in Japan, China and Internationally. So,why did you focus first in Japan and China? Aside from this countries,which other country you plan to have an IDO? Can you share some details about your plan IDO of PlanetNifty?
Ans — The main reason is that we are big fans of Asia and have spent a lot of time in Asia living and working and playing. Thus we have a lot of friends and strategic partners that can, and want to help us grow both our business and our community organically and confidently. We love and know Asia well and are very comfortable working and creating in its markets. We also are lucky enough to have direct connections and relations with a large number of really wonderfully genius artists and creators whose work and ideas we want to share with the rest of the world. What are the qualities and security that Nifty Planet is worth investing for especially that you’re new and is anonymous, how will we able to assure the stability of the project and how will you stay up to date on the latest tokens and coins that the market has to offer?
Ans — Well to be honest, we here at NiftyPlanet have been around the crypto space for a while and we have seen a LOT of crap and scams, and we have also been left high dry by fake or undedicated project teams. One of the reasons we started this project, is not only because the idea of NFT’s is really awesome, but because we want to give back to all the people that were let down in the past, by creating a project that people could get excited about, become deeply involved in, that we could directly interact with and share ideas with, and build something that is not only fun and useful but creates financial opportunity for everyone involved so we can all become more free and happy.

Why is the NiftyPlanet project team remaining anonymous?
We believe that new era of privacy and also private money is here. The world is changing very fast and people want to have a new approach in their relationship with the world at large, including the economy and government. It is clear, especially after the tyranny that has arisen from the insane and and irrational response to the “pandemic” that the NWO and its buddies in the new Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex, are currently trying to take over the world, and or kill us all. But saying all this does not mean that we are against the taxes completely. In fact, we will gladly support the payment of taxes when they will be used for the people that bust their asses to pay them, and not to benefit the psychopaths who are currently in control of the spending of the taxes they collect from all of us. Taxes should migrated to a cryptocurrency basis and the method of payment should be changed from advanced payment — where you pay VAT, consumption taxes or taxes from your income from trading, to the “payment for the results”. In business area it’s called “Pay for Performance Principle”. In this payment for results scenario, for example, if you were happy with how the roads look around us that were built by your government, you would go to the DeFi Tax platform and pay directly to the company who built those roads. The same with your local Police force or any other kind of service that are currently funded by the thousands of types of taxes collected around the world. This way of paying taxes after you see the results or actual use of those taxes will motivate governments to transform and become more effective, efficient and responsible, and it will improve the world and environment around us. In our opinion, VAT that we are all paying in shops is absolutely enough for the government to survive. The rest of the Taxes we will pay in the future, once governments recognize and respect that The Era of Private money is here and we will no longer forgive their irresponsible use of our hard-earned income.
Cryptocurrency gives us our power to control our governments once more, the way they should be. Until the governments can prove they can be responsible and will not misuse or simply steal taxed money from the people we have no reason to hand any over to them. Another important reason for remaining anonymous, is routine paperwork and other extra costs. Once we register any kind of a earth-based company we need to hire a lawyer open a physical office, get and send correspondence in perpetuity. And all these things decrease our efficiency and effectiveness. In our initial stage we can not allow ourselves to waste such important resources as a time. We would better off investing this time to improve your user experience on our platform and make your life easier and more interesting, and to provide more creative and financial opportunities for our users.
The structure of NFPL token distribution
The NiftyPlanet platform is a semi self-funded platform. Half of the funds for the development and platform launch were provided by a few pre-seed investors.
Total token supply is 1 billion tokens.
There are 10 pre-seed investors of this project. In total they control 83M tokens. Additionally, they own 29% interest in the project.
2 main Founders control 8% of all token supply (80M tokens).
Tokens have been distributed to 2 founders, 2 team members and 10 pre-seed investors.
Before we hold our IDO which is planned for June 2021, founders’ and pre-seed investors’ tokens will not move at all. The main reason we are doing this is because we believe that people who participate in IDO’s should have a guarantee that the team and investors will not sell all of their tokens all at once before the IDO starts.
In the graphic you can see the entity structure of token allocation with exact ETH addresses. Until the end of the actual IDO, there will be no NFPL transactions originating from project or investor wallets.

Q1. Could you please introduce Nifty Planet to our community in layman’s term?
Ans — Yes. NiftyPlanet is a web.3.0 platform that built based on Ethereum blockchain. From the start it is place where users can buy NFTs from the famous people and original NiftyPlanet NFTs. In the future, our platform will be fully decentralized and be managed by a Foundation.
Q2. What are the advantages of Nifty Planet to other alternatives in the Blockchain field?
Ans — I would say that there are many differences between the NiftyPlanet and other NFT markets but 2 of them are the biggest to us. First of all we are preparing for any drop together with creators in advance. Including pricing, special mechanics, advertisement. That is why all NFTs have bigger values for the holders than NFTs from rest of the markets. Any creator have to pass Due Diligence process. But at the same time we are web.3.0 system it means that all the assets are under the user’s control.
Second biggest difference is that we plan to attract not just artists of creative people we plan to adopt NFT technology for many different industries and help to join crypto spase different companies and independent people. And our customization can help to make it easier for them and increase the value for their products (NFTs) for everybody.
Q3. What are the major milestones Nifty Planet achieved so far & what are in the future pipeline?
Ans — First of all, we created an Ambassador program and have already gained three Ambassadors to work with us. We have also started our first drop and already sold the majority of those NFT’s. Additionally, we have already built a solid team of more than 10 international team members. And we have our own system that was created by our own engineers based on proven smart contract technology. We have already contracted with a few famous artists to launch NFT drops on our platform starting next month, and we are also in negotiations with at least 10 more international creators.

Why is the NiftyPlanet project team remaining anonymous?
We believe that new era of privacy and also private money is here. The world is changing very fast and people want to have a new approach in their relationship with the world at large, including the economy and government. It is clear, especially after the tyranny that has arisen from the insane and and irrational response to the “pandemic” that the NWO and its buddies in the new Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex, are currently trying to take over the world, and or kill us all. We feel that it is essential that we all begin guarding and protecting our privacy and rights before everything we own and love is gone or usurped by the “powers that shouldn’t be” either via their surveillance, assisted by other NWO buddies such as the tech giants we all know and love. Our own efforts start with this project. Those megalomaniacs aren’t welcome to participate in our community nor do we want anything to do with them thus we choose to remain anonymous.
We also feel there is too much pressure on companies and individuals to pay exorbitantly high taxes. And besides the obvious fact that taxes are too high, governments have shown perpetually that they are completely irresponsible in how they use taxes they collect from hard working citizens the world round; wasting and misusing funds for personal ends such as visiting prostitute establishments, rebuilding the same road many multiple times just so they can receive the same budget as the previous year, and last but not least to start wars, spending billions worldwide to create weapons of destruction to kill people in foreign countries that the taxpayers have no desire to have conflict with at all in the first place. But saying all this does not mean that we are against the taxes completely. In fact, we will gladly support the payment of taxes when they will be used for the people that bust their asses to pay them, and not to benefit the psychopaths who are currently in control of the spending of the taxes they collect from all of us. Taxes should migrated to a cryptocurrency basis and the method of payment should be changed from advanced payment — where you pay VAT, consumption taxes or taxes from your income from trading, to the “payment for the results”. In business area it’s called “Pay for Performance Principle”. In this payment for results scenario, for example, if you were happy with how the roads look around us that were built by your government, you would go to the DeFi Tax platform and pay directly to the company who built those roads. The same with your local Police force or any other kind of service that are currently funded by the thousands of types of taxes collected around the world. This way of paying taxes after you see the results or actual use of those taxes will motivate governments to transform and become more effective, efficient and responsible, and it will improve the world and environment around us. In our opinion, VAT that we are all paying in shops is absolutely enough for the government to survive. The rest of the Taxes we will pay in the future, once governments recognize and respect that The Era of Private money is here and we will no longer forgive their irresponsible use of our hard-earned income.
Cryptocurrency gives us our power to control our governments once more, the way they should be. Until the governments can prove they can be responsible and will not misuse or simply steal taxed money from the people we have no reason to hand any over to them. Another important reason for remaining anonymous, is routine paperwork and other extra costs. Once we register any kind of a earth-based company we need to hire a lawyer open a physical office, get and send correspondence in perpetuity. And all these things decrease our efficiency and effectiveness. In our initial stage we can not allow ourselves to waste such important resources as a time. We would better off investing this time to improve your user experience on our platform and make your life easier and more interesting, and to provide more creative and financial opportunities for our users.
The structure of NFPL token distribution
The NiftyPlanet platform is a semi self-funded platform. Half of the funds for the development and platform launch were provided by a few pre-seed investors.
Total token supply is 1 billion tokens.
There are 10 pre-seed investors of this project. In total they control 83M tokens. Additionally, they own 29% interest in the project.
2 main Founders control 8% of all token supply (80M tokens).
Tokens have been distributed to 2 founders, 2 team members and 10 pre-seed investors.
Before we hold our IDO which is planned for June 2021, founders’ and pre-seed investors’ tokens will not move at all. The main reason we are doing this is because we believe that people who participate in IDO’s should have a guarantee that the team and investors will not sell all of their tokens all at once before the IDO starts.
In the graphic you can see the entity structure of token allocation with exact ETH addresses. Until the end of the actual IDO, there will be no NFPL transactions originating from project or investor wallets.

In this Pandemic, all of us was suffering when it comes to education. We are experiencing struggles about learning and how do we passed our grades when it is online.
We don't know what will happen to our grades for the following days. We must not make fun to the pandemic we experience in these days.

I woke up an hour late Wednesday morning, and by the time I had thrown on a sweatshirt, prepared my glass of Emergen-C, and logged onto Zoom, my class had been going on for 15 minutes. The night before I had taken cough syrup for my seasonal cold, and this was the first day my school switched to virtual instruction. Over the course of the three-hour workshop, I noticed my puffy eyes on the panel of faces and became self-conscious. I turned off my video. I became distracted with the noise of sirens outside and muted my speaker, only to then realize: by the time you’re done muting-and-unmuting, the right moment to join the conversation has already passed. I found myself texting on my computer, stepping away to make coffee, running to the bathroom, writing a couple e-mails, and staring at my classmate’s dog in one of the video panels. I don’t think my experience is unique; I imagined similar situations playing out in virtual offices and classrooms across the world.
In the aftermath of the World Health Organization’s designation of the novel coronavirus as a pandemic on March 11, universities across America are shutting down in an attempt to slow its spread. On March 6, the University of Washington took the lead, canceling all in-person classes, with a wave of universities across the country following suit: University of California, Berkeley, U.C., San Diego, Stanford, Rice, Harvard, Columbia, Barnard, N.Y.U, Princeton and Duke, among many others.
This shift into virtual classrooms is the culmination of the past weeks’ efforts to prevent COVID-19 from entering university populations and spreading to local communities: cancellation of university-funded international travel for conferences, blanket bans on any international travel for spring break, canceling study-abroad programs, creating registration systems for any domestic travel.

Columbia University, which I now attend virtually, moved all classes online starting on March 11. The following morning, president Bollinger declared that classes would be held virtually for the remainder of the school year, and suspended all university-related travel; both international and domestic. The pandemic has affected over 114 countries, killing over 4,000 and shows no sign of abating, leading to chaos in university administration and among students. I find myself obsessing over my family in Japan, especially my mother, whose lung cancer puts her at particular risk. Cancellations are affecting future students as well—admitted students’ events, open houses, and campus tours are all being canceled to minimize contagion.
The quick turn to platforms like Zoom is disrupting curricula, particularly for professors less equipped to navigate the internet and the particularities of managing a classroom mediated by a screen and microphone. I had professors cancel class because they had technical difficulties, trouble with WiFi, or were simply panicked over the prospect of teaching the full class over the new platform. With university IT services focusing efforts on providing professors with how-to webinars on using online platforms, individual student needs for these same services have been placed on hold.
While the initial shift online has created a flurry of chaos, there are benefits to a virtual classroom. Especially in a place like New York, students can continue participating in discussion sections and lectures without riding the subway for an hour, avoiding the anxiety of using public transit or being in other incubators like classrooms, public bathrooms and cafeterias. Students can “sit in” on a class while nursing a common cold or allergies that come with the season, but which can make students a target of serious threats or violence—particularly racialized harassment for Asians. I have found immense relief in not having to pay for Lyfts to campus, avoiding side-eyes for my runny nose or using the little remaining hand sanitizer I have left after holding subway poles. In some situations, online teaching may not even affect student behavior or learning. Studies have shown that medical students learn and perform equally in live versus recorded lectures, and these results are reassuring at a time like the COVID-19 outbreak.
However, the reality is that some subjects are much harder to transfer online. A biochemistry or introductory economics lecture is easier to teach virtually than a music or dance class. The creation of a film or theatrical production requires physical bodies in close proximity. Even in my creative writing workshop, responding to a colleagues’ memoir about her mother’s death is hard to do without looking her in the eye. The screen creates an emotional remove that makes it difficult to have back-and-forth dialogue between multiple people, and it’s almost impossible to provide thoughtful feedback without feeling like you’re speaking into a void.
Over the last few decades, online learning in higher education has been studied extensively. Online MBA programs are on the rise, perhaps unsurprising for a field that often requires virtual conferencing and remote collaboration. Universities now offer online master’s programs to accommodate full-time work and long commutes, or to circumvent the financial barriers of moving to a new location with family. Online bachelor’s degrees are offered by a growing number of schools: Ohio State, University of Illinois Chicago, University of Florida, Arizona State, Penn State and many more. The benefits are the same: classes can be taken anywhere, lack of commute offers more time for studying or external commitments, and the structure is more welcoming to students with physical disability or illness. And yet, online learning hasn’t threatened the traditional model of in-person learning.

A large part of this can be attributed to accountability. Online classes require significantly more motivation and attention. I found it difficult to focus on a pixelated video screen when I could browse the internet on my computer, text on my phone, watch TV in the background, have one hand in the pantry, or just lay comfortably in my bed. The problem, too, is that webinar technology doesn’t quite live up to the hype. Noise and feedback—rustling papers, ambulances, kettles, wind—make it impossible to hear people talk, and so everyone is asked to mute their microphones.
But muting your audio means you can’t jump into a conversation quickly. The “raise hand” function often goes unnoticed by teachers and the chat box is distracting. Sometimes the gallery view just doesn’t work, so you’re stuck staring at your own face or just two of your eighteen classmates. It also means another hurdle for those who hesitate to speak up, even in the best of circumstances. It means you’re just one click away from turning off your camera and being totally off the hook. In an online class over the summer, I once watched a woman—who forgot her camera was still on, though she was muted—vacuum her entire kitchen and living room during a seminar.
In a recent New York Times article, columnist Kevin Roose wrote about his experience working from home while quarantined after COVID-19 exposure. Roose, once a remote worker, cites studies that suggest remote employees are more productive, taking shorter breaks and fewer sick days. But he also writes extensively about the isolation and lack of productivity he feels: “I’ve realized that I can’t be my best, most human self in sweatpants, pretending to pay attention on video conferences between trips to the fridge.” He notes that Steve Jobs, who was a firm believer in in-person collaboration and opposed remote work, once said, “Creativity comes from spontaneous meetings, from random discussions. You run into someone, you ask what they’re doing, you say ‘Wow,’ and soon you’re cooking up all sorts of ideas.”

In educational settings, creativity is arguably one of the most important things at stake. The surprises and unexpected interactions fuel creativity—often a result of sitting in a room brushing shoulders with a classmate, running into professors in a bathroom line, or landing on ideas and insights that arise out of discomfort in the room. This unpredictability is often lost online.
In the essay “Sim Life,” from her book, Make It Scream, Make it Burn, Leslie Jamison writes about the shortcomings of virtual life: “So much of lived experience is composed of what lies beyond our agency and prediction, beyond our grasp, in missteps and unforeseen obstacles and the textures of imperfection: the grit and grain of a sidewalk with its cigarette butts and faint summer stench of garbage and taxi exhaust, the possibility of a rat scuttling from a pile of trash bags, the lilt and laughter of nearby strangers’ voices.”

Classrooms offer these opportunities for riffs and surprise, and a large part of being a student is learning to deliver critique through uncomfortable eye contact, or negotiating a room full of voices and opinions that create friction with your own. When I Zoomed into class from my apartment, I missed being interrupted by classmates who complicated my ideas about a poem or short story. I missed being in workshop and bouncing ideas off of each other to find the best structure for a piece. I missed handwritten critiques, and felt limited in Word: no check pluses, no smiley faces, “Wow” feels flat when it’s not handwritten in the margins, and "Great" feels sarcastic in 10-point Calibri. I was frustrated that I could sleep in because online class meant I could wake up five minutes before class and pretend like I’d been ready all morning.
The COVID-19 pandemic will likely continue presenting challenges beyond those that come up in the course of routine virtual education. Even if this viral spread subsides, or a vaccination becomes readily available, the shift from online classes back to in-person learning may create disruptions of its own—adjusting back to higher standards of accountability, weaning off of phone-checking habits, and transferring comments back to hard copies instead of digital notes. Hopefully, these phases of trouble shooting can provide universities, professors and students the opportunity to practice adaptability, patience and resilience. And hopefully, these experiences will serve as preparation for future challenges that come with the next epidemic, pandemic and other disaster.
For now, I am trying to not look at myself in the gallery of faces, stop being distracted by my expressions, resisting the impulses to check my phone or e-mail, or at least recognize these urges when they arise.
