I'm pretty positive that I have ADHD (inattentive) and started seeing a new therapist and I mentioned that when she asked if I'd need a diagnosis for anything. She told me that most of her clients that think they have it have unresolved trauma and told me that if caffeine doesn't make me sleepy I probably don't have it (it's kind of 50/50) on that. She did say to get an assessment but I felt really disheartened by what she said. I've had symptoms since I was a kid so I'm not sure what to do now

Get the assessment. It sounds like the therapist may have been trying to prepare you for the possibility that the assessment might show that you don’t have ADHD. Maybe you sounded too certain to her, and she’s had patients be disappointed by their assessment results before. Trauma can in fact cause ADHD-like symptoms.

Once you get the assessment, if you don’t feel like this therapist is interpreting your results accurately, you can take the results to someone else.
