I haven't read The Inheritance Games yet, but a couple years ago I read The Naturals series and description seemed intriguing, but I restrained myself from having high expectations. In the past so many descriptions sounded promising only to end up as mixture of romance and fantasy and somehow managed to make me disinterested in both until I found refugee in Brandon Sanderson's books to restore my faith in fantasy genre. Jennifer's writing made me invested from the start. Characters were well written with their own stories, insecurities and demons. The cherry on the top were dialogues. Recently I realised how dialogue could either make story great or make me cringe. I've realised this while reading Demon Copperhead. I gave this book 4 stars only because 5 stars go to my absolute favourites, books closest to my heart and Demon just didn't stole my heart, nevertheless it's good book. Sometimes dialogue, the way characters are speaking, words they're using just seems off to me. I can't imagine x words being spoken under y circumstances by z person. Great dialogues can stay with me and resonate with me long after I finish reading. I still remember Elektra half asking half stating Clytemnestra wished Elektra had died instead of Iphigenia. Did I wish for Clytemnestra to deny it, to say her daughter was wrong? Yes. Was I mad at Clytemnestra for not denying it? Also yes. Did I realise this conversation couldn't take different turn? Painfully so. Costanza Casati wrote one line that made me speechless. That's the beauty of literature to me. I can read book with hundreds of words I'll forget 2 days after I finish reading, but sometimes I read book with one sentence or dialogue that stays with me for long period of time.

I completely understand the love for good dialogue. It's part of why I've gravitated to playwrights a lot, like Sartre or Wilde, despite my general focus on prose during my studies. Good dialogue sticks with you and deeply reverberates.

I will say, The Inheritance Games is a clever YA mystery story. There is romance, but the mystery plot is a at the core of the story and personally, I loved how the many riddles and puzzles in the books kept me on my toes. You can read a book in the series in a day because it's really fast-paced.

Clytemnestra and Demon Copperhead are currently very high on my TBR. I may start Clytemnestra in November on ebook. I'm waiting for a physical copy of Demon Copperhead to arrive so I can really own it (Pulitzer and all). Try out Jennifer Saint's Elektra if you enjoy Clytemnestra as a character as well!

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Rating: 3.4⭐️

I originally started writing this review with 2 hours in the audiobook left, but decided to scrap it because it was much more generous then i'm going to be now

with all the praise ive heard for Once Upon a Broken Heart i'm so confused that this was written by the same author, and now i'm not sure if i'm as willing as i was to start that series, when i'm not even sure i'll even start Legendary or Finale

I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Rebecca Soler and i think her voices are quite good and its easy to forget she's just one person narrating all the characters, and i think thats why i continued with it till the end because the experience wasnt completely unenjoyable

I will say sometimes the performance was a bit dramatic, but i imagine that could be from the writing, which i think felt extremely basic and i think for this being the first in Stephanie Garbers at least well known books (considering i cant even find titles of what wikipedia says shes written before) that can happen and i try not to fault authors for that

the plot felt extremely muddled and confusing, and the pacing was extremely off in several paces but it didnt feel like anything mattered that much anyway, the twists and turns felt too high in quantity to really know what exactly was the truth, but not in a fun way like a book that keeps you guessing, it felt more like there was a full point you were supposed to get but it was so shoehorned in it was hard to grasp it fully

the romance wasnt bad,but it both didnt feel that necessary and felt too necessary, and it sort of took away from how we're suppossed to believe Scarlett loves her sister above all else, when her reunion with Julian had way more depth, and his character felt the most well written till the ending

donatella dragna is probably one of the most insufferable badly written characters ive ever read, and finding out she's supposed to be 15 makes some sense until you remember all the illusions to sex with her character and then you just get a bad taste in your mouth

i dont want to dunk completely on this book, because i did enjoy some of it especially around the middle point when they first arrive on the island, but as it got further on i just wanted it to be over, as i stated earlier i got to about 2 hours left and started to write this review because i wanted it to be over but i didnt even continue the book for several days because it just didnt draw me in enough

i might later continue the series out of curiosity, and because i would like to give Once Upon a Broken Heart a chance but i am so extremely disappointed since this has been on my tbr for a while, i even almost bought the physical copy a few months back but i am so glad i got three other books i thoroughly enjoyed instead because i had attempted originally to read the ebook from my library and could not get through it

tldr: i did not like caraval, i dont think it was the worst book ever written but i dont think it was very good either,and honestly i think the love interest was a better character then any of the rest of them, and only for about half the book

Final Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Final Thoughts: After my disappointing ebook reads (see DNF section), I really needed something to cheer me up, something I know is good, and since it was Halloween that day, I figured it's a great time to re-read Pumpkinheads. This story is so cute and beautifully illustrated, and I love the little plot twist in the end, it always takes my forgetful brain by wonderful surprise. Highly, highly recommend it. 💖

Fandom: Star Wars Sequel Trilogy

Kudos: ✅️

Final Thoughts: This was a short fic for Reyloween. The first half was cute, I enjoyed that; the smut was only okay but didn't dampen my overall enjoyment too much. Fun, quick read.

DNF'd because: Like I said last week, technically the writing was somewhat okay but BOY, did the copy editor sleep while they were editing this book? Did the author even have a copy editor, or do any copy edits themself? I found myself silently correcting things in my head so damn often. At the beginning, it was only mildly irritating but the more I read, the more frustrating it got. Not long after posting last week's reading update, I also found myself suddenly very disinterested in continuing it. Like, I could already tell that even if I did finish it, I would not read any of its sequels, so really, what would be the point? 😮‍💨 so, my DNF cycle continues².

¹ Currently, I'm going through my ebook library, which is full of books I've owned for 7+ years and never read, trying to see just how many of them I'm even still interested in, since my reading tastes have changed a bit since I got them. My process for this is reading the first chapter (or trying to at least) and then seeing how much it intrigues me. If it does, I'll continue it and (try to) finish it, if it doesn't it gets DNF'd.

² But really, I'm glad to finally go through all of these books; at least once I've given them a shot and found they don't hold my interest anymore I don't have to feel guilty anymore for them being unread.
