Harsh light and extreme contrast are well-known to the landscape photographer. A sunrise or sunset is inherently a high dynamic range scene. Even when the preview on your camera or the unprocessed RAW looks terrible, don’t dismiss the image! Your camera is more capable than you think and any relatively modern sensor captures a lot of detail. At a minimum… click the Auto button in your editor to see if there is a great photo hidden behind a terrible RAW rendering. You might be pleasantly surprised!

Plugins in ACDSee. ON1 Plugins Workaround/Lösung Plugins in ACDSee. Grundsätzlich lassen sich Photoshop kompatible Plugins in ACDSee über die Einstellungen einbinden. Diese stehen dann im Bearbeiten Modus über das Plugin Menü zur Verfügung. Mit zum Beispiel den NIK Plugins wie beispielsweise Color Efex oder Silver Efex klappt das problemlos. Sogar mit der älteren Version der NIK Plugins die einige Zeit kostenlos über Google verfügbar waren. Leider ist das nicht bei allen Plugins der Fall. Diese tauchen dann zwar im Plugin Menü auf, beim Transfer eines Bildes passiert aber nichts bzw. es taucht ganz kurz ein Fenster auf dessen Inhalt sich aber nicht lesen lässt. ON1 Plugins Je nachdem für welche Variante (Professional Bundle, Abo etc.) ihr euch bei ON1 entschieden habt, stehen auch die Standalone Versionen der einzelnen Programme zur Verfügung. So lassen sich zum Beispiel NoNoise und Effects als separate Anwendung neben Photo RAW installieren. Neben dem eigentlichen Programm werden auch die entsprechenden Plugins mit installiert. Gibt man nun den korrekten Pfad zur Anwendung an, dann taucht das Plugin auch im entsprechenden Menü auf und Bilder sollten sich dadurch zum Beispiel in Effects bearbeiten lassen. Soweit die Theorie. Die Realität sieht leider so aus, das nur ein kurzes Fenster/Popup auftaucht aber nichts weiter passiert. Das Ganze geht so schnell, dass sich eine etwaige Fehlermeldung nicht lesen lässt. Workaround/Lösung Für dieses Dilemma gibt es mehrere Lösungen/Workarounds. Die einfachste Variante ist es das entsprechende Programm (Effects, NoNoise etc.) als externen Editor einzubinden. Das klappt ohne Probleme und ihr könnt so eure Bilder im entsprechenden Programm öffnen und so beispielsweise Rauschen entfernen oder das Foto mit Effekten aufhübschen. Was ich eleganter finde ist die folgende Lösung. Diese ist meiner Meinung nach aber nur praktikabel wenn ihr zwei Monitore (oder mehr) habe. Auf dem ersten Monitor startet ihr ganz normal ACDSee und auf dem zweiten das entsprechende ON1 Produkt. Ihr könnt nun aus dem Filmstreifen im Bearbeiten Modus Bilder direkt auf das Fenster von beispielsweise Effects ziehen und dort weiter bearbeiten. Beim Beenden der Arbeit speichert ihr das Bild z.B. als TIF ab. Wenn ihr nun den Speicherordner auch noch von ACDSee in den Optionen überwachen lasst, dann habt ihr das Bild unmittelbar verfügbar. A Strandkorb (from German, lit. meaning: 'beach basket'; Danish: strandkurv; English: 'hooded beach chair') is a special hooded windbreak seating furniture used at vacation and seaside resorts, constructed from wicker, wood panels and canvas, usually seating up to two people, with reclining backrests. It was designed to provide comfort seating and shelter from wind, rain, sand gusts and sunburn on beach seafront resorts frequented by tourists. Other built-in details, like extendable footrests, sun awning, side folding tables and storage space, provide the user with several comforts.

Strandkörbe are found at nearly all beach seafront resorts of the North Sea and Baltic Sea in Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, as well as other beach seafronts where sudden fluctuations in adverse weather conditions and wind gusts can prevail. The Strandkorb beach-chair is considered a cult object of German Gemütlichkeit, which has survived two world wars, social and industrial revolutions and the East-West divide of Germany. From spring to autumn, they can usually be rented from beach-chair wardens (German Strandkorbwärter). Two different shapes can be distinguished, the straight angular North Sea variety and the round rolling Baltic Sea variety.

In my Live Edit videos, I share my entire start-to-finish workflow using a photo that I’ve never worked on before. Mistakes, switchbacks, and wrong turns are all part of the video - that’s where the learning happens! Watch over my shoulder as I work on a new image. You’ll hear the thought process and the artistic choices that drive the post-processing adjustments applied.

In this live edit, I embrace a monochromatic image of Face Rock on Bandon Beach, Oregon and process it in Black and White. Work starts in Lightroom and then I use ON1 Effects to enrich detail and add a finishing mood. Those little extra steps in Effects really do make a difference.

New and Improved?

Once again, I tried Topaz Labs. They have come out with “New and improved” versions of their AI software. I coughed up the money, and ‘renewed’ my yearly plan (not going to renew it again, for reasons that will follow.) But I was willing to give it another shot. I loaded an Olympus ORF file into Topaz DeNoise. It did ok, but left the image kind of dull and flat. So, I closed that, and opened…
