Riding The Upside Down Shonan-Monorail (Japan Travel Guide)
This video was captured on the Shonan-Monorail, this was my first time seeing and riding on a suspended monorail, it’s such a fun ride and you can see the view of the street down below, the ride can be a bit bumpy so you have to make sure you hang on.
This exciting ride starts with a trip between Enoshima Station and Ofuna Station with a front facing camera view where we take a journey over small mountains and valleys then we make a return trip from Ofuna back to Enoshima with a side facing camera view where you can see lots of greenery and nice views of the suburbs below.
Ofuna Kannon Temple seen from Ofuna Station. The statue stands at 82 feet, is a prominent feature seen if you’re on the train to and from Kamakura. She is known as the Goddess of Mercy. We spent a few minutes at Ofuna Station watching the sunset as trains pass by (slide to third photo) before going back to Yokohama. 🗓️5 January 2023 #ciJapan2023 #ciTrainSeries (at Ofuna, Kamakura-shi) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqSkkuwvvd0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

2 Chome-12-20 Komachi, Kamakura, Kanagawa 248-0006today was a pretty fun day! kelsey and isaac’s last day in Japan and a little trip to kamakura with magsia! in the beginning i was kind of sad and a little emotional, but hanging out with people made me feel better :)
11/1/2019 - Friday
woke up around 2am to texts from val and we ft’ed, but i was in and out of sleep until 6am
finally got out of bed and just lazed around not doing anything in particular then got ready to meet up with kelsey and isaac in shinagawa for lunch
ate at miyako at shinagawa station: omurice and salad
waited for magsia at shinagawa station to take the train to kamakura; said goodbye to kelsey and isaac
made it to kamakura and went down komachi dori and just wandered in and out of stores
stopped at sawawa for matcha warabimochi and matcha ice cream
then continued to walk and just look around; stopped at a little store cause they were selling film, but it was kind of expensive, so i didn’t buy it; got a kamakura pin from a gacha instead!
entered tsurugaoka shrine and walked into the garden; saw children feeding koi; saw a ceremony for young boys happening in the shrine, so that was cool to see! they were all dressed up in their yukatas SO CUTE
walked around the shrine and then went down the main road and i stopped at arbre noir and i got a kamakura-yaki matcha cake with black sesame filling really good!! also only ¥60 hehe
headed back towards komachi dori and stopped by the souvenir store to buy some gifts; bought a panda plush for natalie, shot glass for litto yak, and some keychains for sisters :)
decided to go to kotokuin and started walking in what i thought was the right way, but then realized that we had to take the train and the temple had already closed, so we ended up exploring and went through a tunnel into the more residential neighborhood of kamakura
watched a beautiful sunset :)
went back to komachi dori for dinner and saw that everything closes so early; it was only about 5:30-6pm!!
went to キャラウェイ curry house and ate the largest portion of rice and pork curry in my entire life
got back on the train back towards waseda and ft’ed val, but stopped in ofuna at a book off super bazaar and magsia found a film camera! this was a HUGE book off, though!! they had surfboards and wetsuits too!!
got back to waseda and then schlumped!
it was overall a pretty good day! it was good to go back to kamakura and try some new foods and go into stores that i had never been in before! i would love to go back, but go to more shrines and temples because there’s so many in the area; and maybe even hike!! i wish there were more hours in the day to experience more.
🚟 the flying train or the upside-down train of Shonan Monorail. From Shonan-Enoshima Station to Ofuna Station. The tracks are attached to the roof, hence, called a “flying train”. A highlight of our Enoshima visit and a tick off our train bucket list. 🗓️5 January 2023 #ciJapan2023 #ciTrainSeries (at Shonan Kanagawa Japan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqRpOy9vGif/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Shōmyō-ji (称名寺) is a temple in Kamakura about an hour and change of a trip from where I’m staying. I stumbled upon it quite by accident, as I was actually intending to visit a different temple of the same name in Yokohama last Sunday. As it happened, I plotted the course to this temple into Google maps without checking to verify whether I was on the right track, only realizing my error en route. I’m glad that this is how things came to pass, though, since I had a fun visit.
Shōmyō-ji stands in a wooded area about a 45 minute walk away from Ofuna Station (I walked back to the station from the temple because I didn’t have bus change, but you can also bus it from Ofuna). Throughout the temple complex are several images of, among other beings, Jizō Bosatsu (a bodhisattva; Sk: Ksitigarbha) and Fudō Myōō (a wisdom king/bright king; Sk: vidyaraja). There’s also an icon of Dainichi Nyorai (Mahavairocana), one of the cosmic Five Great Buddhas. Dainichi Nyorai reigns over the cardinal direction of the center.
I’ve been really busy and thus haven’t had too much time to follow up on the history of this temple yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it is a Shingon Buddhist temple.
When one visits this temple, they will see a map by the entrance showing two possible pedestrian routes, but one of them is closed off for now. The other leads to a long stairway to an enclosure that houses 36 Dōji and beyond them, the Dainichi Nyorai image. The statue stands past the area where visitors may walk, so I don’t have any good photos of it, but the fourth through seventh photos show the array of Dōji that stand before him.
Going back down to the base of the staircase, if one turns right, there is a cemetery and past that, a waterfall leading into a stream. There are several images of Fudō Myōō in that area (pictured in the last two photos), including a grouping enclosed in a caved area. It was a truly beautiful space - I wish my photos did it justice.
I was also excited that people who were visiting the temple spoke to me. Because this temple is not a high profile, famous place (to the best of my understanding), it is probably less common for foreigners to visit. They approached me to ask where I’m from, how I got there, why I decided to visit, etc., and were generally very nice to me, even though I was not on top of my game in terms of my speaking skills.
All in all it was a really great experience, and one of the few times when Google maps’ famed incompetence in Japan yielded positive results.
