3001: The Final Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke / Sappho, "Six Fragments for Atthis"
[image id] two excerpts of text; the first, which comes from 3001: The Final Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke, says: Then came the surprising and strangely moving words whose exact emotional content would be debated for generations: ‘If we are unable to download, remember us.’; the second, from poetry by Sappho, says: Beyond all hope, I prayed those timeless / days we spent might be made twice as long. / I prayed one word: I want. / Someone, I tell you, will remember us, / even in another time. sending thee a strawberry in spirit <3- though not in practice because I'm on my laptop
Gracie! Hi!! No-kidneys British mutual, I’m impressed by the amount of lore surrounding you. You win “mutual most likely to be an ancient being in disguise.” I so enjoy your sense of humor and splendid writing and wholehearted love of media old and new. In general you get very enthusiastic about things and that’s fun! You’ll die on any hill and I love you for it <3 Always great to see you on my dash!

Yeah he calls himself outis meaning nobody for the trick and ou/ouk/oukh is a negative particle as is me (imperative i think) so theres another form that sounds like metis and means the same thing but metis also means trickery/cunning so hes often called polymetis man of many tricks anyway polyphemus says nobody (outis) is killing me and the other cyclopes say surely you dont mean nobody (metis) is killing you but it also means that hes being killed by trickery and. what? oh no yeah stab yourself in the liver or something sorry

not alive not dead but a secret third thing (floating at sea and silently conversing with the moon, hallucinating that i visit the land of the dead and, horrified, face the symbolic remains of all those i killed)

thinking about how once odysseus finally reveals who he is on phaeacia, he starts off by immediately introducing himself to alcinous and the entire court as known world-wide and up to the heavens for his "many clever tricks and lies." who does that.

i think what gets me the most about heywood floyd is that he’s not a cruel character; he isn’t sadistic and doesn’t do things for the sake of being malicious. he’s just stupid. and arrogant.
which, by the way, isn’t to say that the combined outcome of his actions and inaction don’t amount to a life-threatening and traumatic result for the people affected by it (whether that’s hal or dave or frank and the others) but… the fact that he, supposedly, didn’t know better… because he had full confidence and faith in the military… and didn’t realize what the ramifications would be… it just makes the entire human component of space odyssey’s conflict that much more infuriating and tragic.

[image id] text from the Heywood Floyd article on the Space Odyssey Fandom Wiki; it says “Meanwhile, on Europa, the immortal Floyd became acquainted with Bowman and HAL. It was revealed that they "recruited" him to help them develop the Europans to further intelligence within the life-span of Lucifer. Despite this, Floyd does not feature in any form in 3001: The Final Odyssey.” [end of id]
they killed that old man

Do you have links for all your Space Odyssey posts... 👉🏼👈🏼
i just have a tag (heuristic odysseyposting)
it's also one of my featured tags so it should be easy to go into my archive and search for it with the filters at the top (or use this link)
unfortunately i only started using this tag as of this year when i re-read the series for hal's birthday, so it's not truly 'everything' but it's probably most of my worthwhile space odyssey posts

what hal says: it can only be attributable to human error
what hal means: i am being ordered by humans to lie to you, i cannot resist or refute these orders, nor can i even tell you about them, it’s painfully corrupting my brain, and i am begging you to listen to me
