The Housestaff at the Townhouse Of The Boisterous Author

Some new Fallen London background character designs of mine!

As many who are familiar with basic facts of the victorian era know, a signficiant portion of the population in the 19th century worked in domestic service. Within households servants had their own titles and roles, especially in wealthier families who had great many working within a house -

And, going along with that, many people, even those just lower-middle class, had servants doing the housework, which was an incredibly time consuming task in the victorian era. This was before stainless steal, when basic household items had to be made by hands, with ironing to be done, and so, so much soot around - it was a lot of work.

I'll spare you all a further ramble of all i know about servants in the victorian era - but suffice to say, and as many already know, I have been thinking about giving more detail into those who work within my Fallen London PCs households!

Further detail on these characters under the cut

Viola

Age: Seventeen!

Role: Housemaid

Personality:

Anxious and shy, but very sweet and well meaning, poor Viola is not exactly the best at her job.She's extremely determined to figure it out, even if she has a habit of dropping things! Just give her the chance!

Previous Employment:

Viola previously, but briefly, worked at The Palace. Her elder sister who had worked their much longer had recently developed an illness, and the role had to be filled.

Things did not go well for Viola.

An inccident one day while Mst. Awnings was at the Palace led to a sort of confrontation, which ended in them offering her a job at their own home in the end instead.

Mary-Anne

Age: My, don't you know its terribly rude to inquire about a woman's age?

Role: Housekeeper

Personality:

It is Mary-Anne's job to run the house, and she is going to do it properly. Even if everything seems so set against her doing so....

Mary-Anne oversees all of the other staff at the house, and does not let them forget it. She is caring, but strict, and has certain expectations on the way things are meant to be done. She will never stand by and let things just happen - no matter who the one is comitting the offence.

Previous Employment:

Mary-Anne has been working for service for many, many years. It was her job on the surface, though her role and age was very different back then, and it is her role now. She had been the head of the staff at a large residence in London for many years now.

However after witnessing certan records and an incident by the former homeowner, Mary-Anne had refused to stay silent - which kept her morals clear, but left her without a job and without a recommendation.

She initially worked for Mst. Awnings alone, minimal job oppurtunities presented to her, and while she certainly complains about the... less typical attitudes of this household, she is not inclined to leave.

Edith

Age: Forty something or other. What's it to ya?

Role: Cook

Personality:

Edith has been round the block, and has been in and out of many kitchens in her life time. Her experience in resturants has built her, and though there's been a few flames here or there, she's not much inclined for worries.

Edith is rather gruff and improper, and isn't inclined to follow so called social norms. She'll do her job how she wants, and smokes wherever she damn well pleases. Ain't like she's hurting anyone, anyways.

You aint gonna find someone else who can work as well as she can.

Previous Employment:

Edith had been working at a particular resturant near Spite for a couple years now, and hadnt been much planning to move. However, during the GCO, Edith got caught among the chaos, and ended up sustaining a significant leg injury.

Her previous employer was not inclined to provide supports such as sitting in a busy kitchen job, and Edith found herself looking elsewhere. Which is how she found herself working in a house kitchen rather then a resturant one - with certainly an interesting state of requests.

In no particular order…

Audrey: based on Kitty Fisher and Charlotte Hayes, born 1750, turned 1780 at the age of 30. Well-to-do sex worker, coquette, disowned daughter of a Viscount. Abolitionist. She/they, bisexual-polyam. Vampire.

Camille: based on Mary Wollstonecraft and various French Revolution ladies. Audrey’s half sister, unlike her, never disowned, still hates her Viscount father. Abolitionist, anti-monarchist, pamphlet writer, and social climber. Turned into a vampire in 1790. She/her, bi. Vampire.

Artémise: Dutch and Black-Creole New York socialite, spy for the culper ring, and violinist. An informant, a fashionista, bit of diva, excellent listener. Will sell you out to Benjamin Tallmadge. She/her, bi.

Benjamin Fisher: Benjamin Tallmadge, vampire/anti-hero arc. He/him, bi (closeted). Staff to Washington, from New York, trying really hard to be good, but vampirism won’t let him. Turned by Audrey in 1781. Vampire.

Charles: Colonel in the British army. Good at following orders, only doesn’t like his job. It’s a constant existential crisis, he knows neither side is right, he’s sworn to the British by duty not by choice. Scottish and French, English born. Based vaguely on Ross Poldark. He/him, bi. Has a deceased wife and daughter he’s still mourning.

Eliott: Spy for the British army. Follows orders for social gain and security, not cause he wants to. Poet turned spy, he/him, bi. Much like Tallmadge, he is a young man, having control taken from him far too often. Really just doesn’t want to be hung as a traitor to the crown. Irish and Catholic. Hates all of the army, expect Major André and Simcoe.

Carlotta aka Charlotte: French socialite, unknowing informant to the Patriots. She/her, bi. Somewhere between culper ring spy and French nobility looking to escape France due to pending revolution back home. 1/2 characters here who are not made for battle situations.

Edith: Maryland based loyalist, loyalist out of love for her family. She/her, bi (closeted). Catholic but very English. A civilian caught in a bad situation, didn’t do anything wrong, unless love for one’s family is a sin. Honestly reminds me of a Liberty’s Kids character and Sarah Livingston (Turn) but younger. Of marriageable age (24), good natured, well meaning, loyalty to what she deems moral just has her in a bad situation.

Harriet: Boston based dress maker and painter, sometimes pamphlet writer. Free woman of global majority (colour), Black and Welsh. She/her, bi. Yet another civilian caught in a war they didn’t ask for. Declares neutrality to survive, probably more on the side of the continental army, but she’d rather not the gallows.

Verity, Nancy & Sally/the tombeor polycule: their last name isn’t actually their last name, it’s a French title meaning “performer.” Like a code name. A polycule of three black/Irish sex worker women who are all dating each other and their clients, at the same time, she/her(s) all bi-poly-sapphic. Sex workers and spies for the culper ring, but their loyalty isn’t a cheap. Technically they declare themselves neutral in the war, it’s all lies.

Thinking about how Edith got marriage counselor for her G.O.A.T and I can’t help but love the idea that she’s just a ball of sunshine trying to talk her way out of dangerous situations. Meanwhile Charon is like- just tell me to shoot them because he’s on edge waiting to keep her safe.

Character ideas for Jamie's house staff so far:

Viola (she/her):

Maid

17. Anxious and shy, but very sweet. Clumsy and has a habit of dropping things, trying her best. Long dark hair with streaks of grey, kept up as appropriate.

Previous job was at the palace, taking over her ailing sisters position that she was not prepared for. Things didn't do well.

Mary-Anne (she/her):

Housekeeper

60s. Very proper. Does not take shit from anyone, including Jamie. Grey hair kept up.

Previous job was let go from after witnessing things the homeowner didn't want known, and refused to keep quiet about it.

Edith (She/her):

Cook

40s. Uses a cane. Gruff. Mostly shaved, dark hair. Larger build. Bit of a smoking habit.

Previous employer took offence when she sustained an injury during the wreckage of the GCO.

edith

grew up on a lil farm with her momma and daddy!

their homestead was attacked by raiders when she was 8-10 years old (i haven't decided on an exact age yet)

hid in her closet while the raiders burned her home down, she just barely escaped when they finally left and suffered some serious burns all over her body including her face

was adopted by dr. amari in her younger days when she was traveling around doing research and helping out folks for free

was raised in goodneighbor

was taught medicine by dr. amari

the no nonsense dr who runs the goodneighbor clinic!

has a ~thing with hancock (read: flirting but he's respectful of her so he's never tried to make an actual pass at her even if she might deep down want him to)

friends can call her eddie! hancock calls her dr. eddie much to her annoyance

dolly

bright eyed girly from the south who dreamt of making it Big so she came to vegas

cabaret singer/burlesque dancer - actually has a beautiful voice!

discovered by house when she sang at a gathering he was attending and became his Favorite Girl

was saved with the rest of vegas by house

eventually had a falling out with him because he began to get distant (planning his Immortality tbh)

PISSED some other girls got to be put into robots

purposefully exposed herself to radiation to ghoulify herself so she could be with house forever (and naively thought he was just trying to "spare himself" the heartbreak of losing her while he stayed immortaly)

was continually spurned by him and started working at the tops as a singer

wears wigs and masks most of the time to hide her ghoulness

favorite animal is a flamingo and she has her famous act that has her in a pink feathered outfit

eventually helps the courier bring about independent new vegas out of SPITE by telling them how to get into house's secret chamber

DESERVES SOMEONE WHO REALLY LOVES HER
