prefacing this w personal meta on yang jian as a god but it’s actually just more meta on my yang jian esper oc:
i understand yang jian as someone who loves and cares very deeply, and also as someone who adheres strictly to a set of morals. and like most times these two things can coexist bc in most cases it is not a bad thing to care about others, etc. but if he has to choose between one or the other it almost seems like he is conflicted in the choice. to save his mother is a decision he made while acknowledging he would defy the most powerful heavenly figure if he does so. to imprison his sister is to follow heavenly law, but i imagine he did it with a heavy heart. he can be kind and loyal and devoted, but he is also a punisher, an enforcer of heaven’s will. i think he places a certain degree of trust in his superiors, which can just as easily be taken away for injustice or malevolence.
i think that’s probably why i stuck with him having an emotionally platonic d/s relationship. it doesn’t really matter who he has it with, so long as it’s someone who’s understanding and willing to support him. my concept for a tu’er shen esper just happened to fit the bill. tianhu isn’t quite anywhere in life either, but he’s not burdened by choices. he’s gone through enough to empathize with yulang but he has the space and time to be a source of comfort or offer him a break from his life. yulang’s not in a position where he should keep deep bonds if he doesn’t want to run the risk of having to destroy them, but there’s less of an obligation to physically be around in order to keep a friendship, as opposed to a romantic relationship.
yulang is still very interesting to me as a character who has basically been forced to mature too quickly. this is something that could have been touched on with characters like li ling or tang xuan who have been given power/responsibility at a relatively young age but it doesn’t appear that they’re struggling with it in any way. yang jian himself is a person who lost both parents and possibly a sibling as a young child, and it’s not unrealistic to think he would’ve carried the trauma into his journey to split the mountain. it’s not just grief and love for family but the fact that he should not have had to grow into the world to take their place. with the disappearance of her sister and the death of his bil yulang has instantly become the head of the family. he is the only one left who can take in xiang liu, who up until this point was more like a younger brother. to find his sister is to try and fulfill this desire to shift his responsibility away, to be distant from his nephew and make his sister return as a beacon of the family. (realistically, i’m not even sure if he’d even find her alive or in a state where everything can go back to normal. it’s been years since he started trying and there’s a good chance she’s already gone.). it’s selfish, ultimately, though he does care for her and want her safety. he does grieve for her and how she is gone from his life, but i think he tacitly understands that she would’ve rather have yulang look after his nephew than drop everything to try and save her.
the mature decision IS to make choices that would benefit xiang liu and yulang’s relationship with him, but it’s not an easy decision and yulang would find himself at times trying to go back from it. he’s been forced to grow up too early. though 21 year olds are adults, most of them aren’t adults who worry about jobs, benefits, or the future of other family members. most of them are still in this transitional phase of entering society and learning how to live off it. yulang was forced to speedrun this transition at 17 and though it is the selfless to fill in as household head, is it worth it? does he have to? he’s unable to experience several aspects of a quintessential early adult life bc he has taken up the weight of the family. does he deserve to grow up normally? would he even forgive himself if he abandoned the responsibility?
ollie is someone with similar experiences to yulang, the difference being that he has made a decision to abandon his role as an heir and reject the burden of his family to seek justice. it may have even been the only path he was offered. he was someone i considered yulang could’ve bonded with, but not right now. i don’t think yulang’s situation as i currently have him allowed him to meet and connect with ollie.
i also considered at one point putting yulang in the shadow decree as a sort of infiltrator, or perhaps someone who works there in exchange for the safety of the sister they stole from him. i eventually decided against it since the choice would distance him so much from xiang liu, becoming the result of a choice that’s so selfish the yang jian in yulang would have refused to go down that path in the first place. but possibly in a timeline where he goes off the deep end, almost if i want to go in the vein of lotus lantern (1999) chenxiang and yang jian, it might’ve been viable?

other unsolicited yulang lore bc i can’t sleep and i am not going to try to sleep in weird poses:
he was largely raised by his older sister and her bf/eventual husband. their parents were killed when yulang was like. eight and he never got over it
he’s actually closer in age to his nephew than his sister and he taught him how to throw axes
he’s the kind of bitch that teaches himself how to throw axes. wasn’t much to do in a small town and he thought it was cool.
his esper transformation happened when he was like. 17 and he got a call home from college that he had to go back because his nephew was in the hospital. the house was a crime scene with his brother in law dead and his sister missing and it was pretty fucking traumatic on top of causing the transformation
anyways he dropped out of college after that to support his newly esperified nephew and dig up more clues about where his sister went. so far he’s pretty sure it’s some shadow decree bullshit
he did bounty hunting in graywater for a bit since it paid well and they didn’t care if he was running around finding dirt on the decree on the side. it soured his relationship with his nephew pretty bad though since he was wandering about all the time
they still have a pretty shitty relationship even though yulang grudgingly changed jobs so xiang liu could go to the esper academy. yulang’s around more often for botched family bonding time, though he is constantly vaguely irked by how everything at work has slowed down his investigation on his sister’s whereabouts.
he sucks it up though. the people here are nice and he actually gets like, insurance and stuff.

came to the revelation today that yulang’s outfit is accidentally giving tetsuo akira a little. i guess that means xiang liu needs to be a kaneda reference now

making yulang’s character sheet took a shitload out of me so for now I’m just going to make everyone look at the random bits of information i have on other ocs
I’m going to have to look into the canon timeline for this but i imagine he’s mid twenties, ex-military
used to hold a flame for sander who was his superior of some sort in the army. still might be a bit in love w him idk
he’s friends w a lot of the evening sounds crew. usually hangs out there after work and bonds w melanie over the struggles of liking men and all.
i guess his primary job is being an assistant at unky chai’s fortunetelling stall but he part times other gigs. probably has a history of bounty hunting and the guild reaches out once in a while for a specific assignment
gunslinger type. i’m making the oc and i say he’s a scruffy otter that dual wields handguns. also he has rabbit ears if you haven’t figured.
he’s in a d/s fwb relationship with yulang. this started out as a completely arbitrary decision but now i’m extremely invested in exploring their dynamic.
chen xiang/xiang liu
yulang’s nephew. they have a weirdly complex relationship and at the center of it is the fact that xiang liu’s mom is still missing and yulang is still struggling to cope w it in a normal way
he’s tried to investigate himself a few times but being a Minor he usually got dragged back home and chewed out for it
he doesn’t hate yulang as much as he pretends to but being a teenager and also having devoted a lot of time to emotionally pvping his uncle he isn’t about to stop
he’s literally like 15. he’s gotten in trouble multiple times for shirking class to fight miramon and things and at this point yulang is seriously considering sending his teachers monthly gift baskets
dhalia thinks he’s fucking hilarious though. officially she’s not supposed to condone his behavior or anything but she thinks he’s such a character
orpheus/valerian
he has the sad patheticness of indie white male musicians but his aesthetic is visual kei/glam rock and the music he makes is comparable to mcr
by mcr i mean the sort of punk/emocore style along w the themes mcr tended to explore in their lyrics
he’s just a fucked up little bisexual man honestly. he’s banned from evening sounds and you can hear him composing songs on his balcony and his fanbase is abt 75% alt people and 25% gatekeeping incels
ran/emil
scavenger mechanic transmasc sort. probably deemed a public menace due to blowing up capacitors on purpose (to feel smth)
joined the shadow decree bc people there don’t give him shit about where he sourced his materials or what he’s building.
emphasis on his sourcing. a lot of his stuff is stolen or scavenged. a lot of his work is also conveniently waterproofed due to his powers.
wu song/wu yan
transfem and in a t4t relationship w lin jian
honestly that’s all i really have on her she’s buff as fuck and lin xiao was her main rival back when she still fought in the utgard rings
li ji/li jian
transmasc and dating wu yan
he’s a shadow guard. this one time he was like ‘fine i’ll do it myself’ and joined the shadow decree to do it himself and. he just ended up staying
i think this is extremely funny considering the shadow decree is full of snake adjacent espers and legend goes that li ji went ‘fine i’ll do it myself’ and killed a serpent that kept eating girls as sacrifice
he uses a single edge long ass longsword. like that thing sephiroth final fantasy uses

one of the funniest things abt swk is that he beats the shit out of some of the most powerful deities in heaven and then after he gets broken out of the mountain they’re like besties. i think that’s why li ling hangs out w tang xuan he got beaten into friendship.
