Can we have 35 (most prized possession) for best girl Gloria :3
for purely sentimental reasons, her wedding ring. for 'holy shit, i have to fight to survive' reasons, her Pip-Boy. she doesn't have the lifetime of experience your average wastelander has, she's not a particularly good shot, and the face of the world is totally new to her. without it, even well-supplied, she'd be dead pretty quickly. she doesn't take it off, even to sleep

9 and 36……………..for gloria AND for nick (as you write him)
gasp!! to be asked by the op herself.... i haven't even tidied up or baked a cake
9. Is there anything that anyone who knows better should avoid bringing up to your character (i.e., any conversational landmines)?
the conversational landmine is a literal landmine! gloria walked into one after emerging from the Vault. i figure she doesn't mind fielding (brief, polite) questions, but anything beyond that turns her into this
Tumblr media
i feel like any prying into her life pre-war is about the same, but it's not well known either. she makes a point not to tell people, she's a hard person to get to know.
nick, i feel, doesn't have very many! he's got skeletons, sure, and things he's sensitive about, but i feel is socially aware enough to head off anything that might start to touch on a sensitive subject with a well-timed joke, or a subject change. i figure he keeps a big mental file of one-liners to head off any questions about why his face is falling apart ("I put myself down for plastic surgery and didn't read the fine print", etc). i guess to really get under his skin you'd have to know him, but if you're intent on doing that you're not going to know him for very long
36. What keeps your character going? What is the one thing that they have that could motivate them to keep persisting if they lost literally everything else?
i just did that one for gloria, but for nick i think it's... hm!! i think his capacity to make real, positive change in a very, very difficult environment, in an almost impossible set of circumstances. he can't undrop the bombs, he can't make the planet more livable, but he can hand off water to somebody who needs it, or give somebody closure, or find some sentimental thing that won't net him any caps. he's not perfect, he's extremely flawed, but i think what keeps him going is real, honest-to-god compassion

4. Does your character prefer high-tech or low-tech solutions to problems?
low tech! she's a very practical person, almost to a fault. why go to all the effort of getting, say, a laser weapon, when a severe beating with a lead pipe will do.
10. What is your character’s weapon of choice? Are they good in a fight, whether armed or not?
a simple pistol. i think she kept the one she Did That Horrible Thing With at the end of dmt just as a matter of recourse, but i wouldn't count her as particularly good with a gun. she's the type to have taken a few safety classes pre-war and maybe go shooting now and then, but compared to people who have had to learn or die she's not a great shot. she's not particularly strong, either. in any situation that's violent and unexpected, she's at a huge disadvantage
24. How quick is your character to forgive? Are they able to earn forgiveness from others easily?
it depends on the infraction! 'eating that thing i was looking forward to', she can laugh off. anything beyond that i think will haunt her until she dies. i don't think she's well liked in diamond city and mostly gets a pass because of nick's outstanding reputation
36. What keeps your character going? What is the one thing that they have that could motivate them to keep persisting if they lost literally everything else?
the fact that people take her seriously and that she genuinely enjoys her vocation as a private detective, which is more than she ever had pre-war. i know i just said she wasn't well-liked, but i think people give her credit when it's appropriate, which is something bewildering to her. dww digs more into her backstory, but something that sticks with her and leaves her very, very bitter is her surgical oncologist making derogatory and sexual remarks about her figure while she's very, very ill. it takes her husband, nathan, intervening for her to get still-inadequate treatment and colours every interaction she has from that point on

after dead man talking, gloria joins the agency! it inspires mixed feelings in nick. it's one thing to solve a crime, it's another entirely to solve hers...

Hi! I'm new! I have two questions :](bare with me, for some reason I can't create new lines in an ask :/) 1. Who was Gloria's husband?? Was it a good marriage??, 2. What happened to Gloria's right side??? It looks sort of like burns, but I'm not sure :']
Hello! Her backstory is in my noir/mystery novella, Dead Man Talking, but it's pretty long, so I'll condense it down for you!
1) Her husband is Nate Roche. He worked in a bank before the war and got Gloria a customer service job at that same place after Gloria's medical scares/treatments drained their savings and they needed the money (she's in remission for breast cancer so doesn't take 'waking up in the irradiated future' well). He has his flaws but they're very much in love and a good match for each other. When Gloria wakes up in the Vault, two centuries later, Nate isn't in his cryo-pod. This is how she and Nick meet: she doesn't know where to begin looking for him and he's the only person in the Commonwealth capable of tracking down Nate. It's what kickstarts the plot and is the central mystery of the whole fic, so I hope you won't mind if I leave it there ;3c
2) Yeah, those are burns! On her journey south from the Vault to Diamond City, she unwittingly wanders in raider territory and trips over a landmine. It leaves her with a horrific burn but she still drags herself 70 miles on foot to have a shot at saving her husband and by the time she arrives she's dying of several infections and needs months of bedrest, which should tell you what kind of person she is
Here's a little excerpt from the fic that'll give you a little more about her!
