ok guys hear me out

qsmp shutter island theory. all the members are clinically insane due to their time in previous "worlds" and their actions within them.

the federation is actually good and takes care of the members by providing them with enrichment through activities they find fun and intriguing (e.g cellbits enigmas, etoiles regular spars etc) that fuel what they think their purpose in life is (to solve difficult problems or protect the people they love)

the eggs are also a way for them to keep hold of the last bits of their sanity because as we know humans will push past every hardship to care for something that is weaker and smaller than themselves, and that it's one of our instinctual behaviours.
