kinda fucked up how there's no encouragement for women to participate in no-shave November too. almost like they know that if women stopped shaving for a month for a good cause, we'd realise that we never needed to be hairless to begin with, and the industry that thrives on convincing us to look perpetually prepubescent would come crumbling down.

couldn't stop thinking about steve doing no shave november and eddie absolutely loathing it (but secretly loving it) - now on ao3

"That looks terrible."

"I like it." Steve declares, brushes one finger along the barely-there glimpse of a moustache he's been letting sprout since the first of the month.

"Agree to disagree." Eddie says, and Steve just smiles. Steve is a hairy dude but he's not a moustache dude.

Steve works on proving Eddie wrong. By the tenth day, Steve's upper lip has a fuzzy baby caterpillar sleeping there and when Steve leans in to show it off and the caterpillar turns into butterflies but in Eddie's stomach, instead.

Steve preens like his ability to grow hair is something to be proud of and he gestures to his face.

"Should've done this ages ago."

"Again - I hate it." Eddie says, and it sounds a bit silly because why would Eddie's opinion on Steve's facial hair matter at all? But Steve doesn't look offended in the slightest.

"Liar."

Eddie blinks and it's nearing the third week of November and Steve has bought a tiny pair of scissors so he can trim the ends of his moustache.

"I thought the point wasn't to shave." Eddie says, voice hollow as Steve rubs two fingers through his moustache, putting some kind of balm on it. Because Steve takes care of the hair on his face with the same gusto he takes care of the hair on top of his head. He doesn't know why Steve waited until Eddie came over with two coffees in hand to start getting ready, but this is what he's like and Eddie stopped letting it bother him a long time ago.

"It's not shaving. It's trimming. It was getting a little wild." Steve meets his eyes in the reflection of his mirror and he grins and somehow, somehow, it looks better with the moustache. "Admit it, you like it."

"I don't." Eddie says and it sounds like a lie. Eddie chants, I don't like it, I don't like over and over in his head. Hands Steve his coffee to help change the subject.

It's November twenty-fifth when they're out at a bar and Steve drinks deeply from his beer mug and when he pulls it away, he has to wipe his moustache with the back of his hand. Eddie watches - stares - and is only caught because he can't pull his eyes from the way Steve's skin came away damp.

"What?"

"Nothing." Eddie says, mouth dry, takes another drink.

Outside the bar, Eddie shoves Steve's back into the brick wall and stares that fucking moustache down.

"Do you really hate it that much?"

"Please shut up." Eddie says, and then because he's curious and Steve looks unfairly good with Eddie's hands tangled in the front of his shirt, Eddie leans in and kisses him. Feels the stupid moustache brush against his upper lip, feels it against his face as Steve pulls him in, kisses him back.

On December first, Eddie wakes up in Steve's bed because that's a thing now. And when he goes to use the washroom, Steve is already in there with his electric razor plugged in.

"Ready to say goodbye?" Steve asks and Eddie nods, a little dumbfounded. Watches in silence as Steve clicks it on and it's only when he's holding the guard up to his lip that Eddie finally reaches over and pulls the plug.

"It's fine." Eddie says and Steve looks over.

"What's fine?"

"You don't have to shave it."

"How come?" Steve looks smug now, turns around properly and leans against the sink, razor held loosely against his side. "Say it."

Eddie groans, finally walks close enough to lean against Steve's front but Steve doesn't let him press his face into his neck, keeps one arm on his shoulder so he can see. So Eddie has to look at his stupid moustache when he finally says the words out loud.

"I like it. I like the moustache."

Steve pulls him in, kisses him, tickles his face with it. "See? Was that so hard?"

Eddie tilts his chin up, doesn't answer.
