- she’s a very physical player considering the main (the only reason i’ve seen that’s not entirely misogyny) reason women don’t become nhlers is the lack of hitting in women’s leagues and she wants to prove that she can be useful in that aspect of the game
the first time she hits jack he is not expecting it and the hits are consistent until they get to know each other and then she pulls a tiny bit
he’s blushing and kicking his feet and whatever and nico is like you’re fucking delusional kid

if she’s drafted in 2019, she initially sticks to cole like literal glue and that’s how she meets jack, who of course embarrasses the shit out of himself drunk and says something that happened to be a deep rooted insecurity of hers. she gets over it and during the summer she makes plans with cole again and jacks there, and this time he can handle his alcohol a little better and makes a better impression - when they start hooking up he remembers the night and feels like an ASS cause he now realizes why she avoided him like the plague
for 2020, it’s dawson she meets first, which makes a lot of sense with his role in the au. she becomes really attached to him in a permanent way and the first time they play each other he invites her out. a lot of the devils are confused and he’s like she’s cool i promise!! her on ice persona proves to be strictly for on ice shenanigans and a lot of them kind of feel bad as she’s definitely gotten some backlash for being a girl in the nhl. she’s getting advice from nico and she’s kinda tucked into dawson cause he’s her comfort person when jack comes up and also embarrasses himself cause he falls face first tripping over himself when he sees her out of her gear for the first time
if she’s drafted in 2021, jacks watching the live draft with luke and just as everything’s calming down with the excitement of luke going to the devils, the rangers announce that they’ve chosen you. they play a clip from your women’s league and from what he can see your game and energy is very similar to trevor’s (he hates it) and then later that night he sees the clip of you going around celebrating being the first woman drafted to the nhl and he goes back on that thought and cyber stalks you until your first time playing nj in which he meets you at the blue line for warmups and flirts so badly
- when quinn meets her in the media edit her and jack are already hooking up, and quinn doesn’t really piece that together cause she does a really good job at making fun of jack and avoiding his flirting

cole is her #1 facetime buddy. he’s always on the phone while she’s like doing her hair or something. she has an automatic curling iron and he thinks it’s magic

nico is another one of her safe people cause after they were introduced in her first season she started going to him when she needed advice
he probably wasn’t the person to ask cause he wasn’t even all that experienced either at that time but regardless of if she took his advice she always felt like he understood
he likes to say that she trained him for his captaincy
he is protective as hell when it comes to her, too and he’s loud about it
seamus is her son. even while she’s a ranger. that is her son. she reaches out to him over instagram and is like how does moyle feel abt sharing?? cause i’m adopting you right now

she can’t stand him (affectionate) now that she knows him better but he still inspires her a lot and all of the attention he gets for his style drives her even more

since it’s in toronto in 23-24 i can so see her trying to make an impression on mitch cause she wants to talk hockey with him so bad and i’m gonna assume austons there too so jack is butthurt that she’s hanging out with him and at some point he plops next to her on the bench and is like ‘we’re gonna get a goal together and we should plan a celly’
she’s opposed until he’s like ‘fine i’ll just pick you up and make you celly with me then’ and she gives in

but whatever it is they choose to do has people going fucking INSANE on twitter and tiktok and then the next four points they get together they just start making it more and more elaborate and at the last one (y/n goal, jack primary a) he just slides onto his knees and grabs her legs while she’s essentially t posing and yelling
they absolutely have the most energy out of anyone there (i don’t really remember the asg so i don’t even remember if the players even celly?? but i mean 5 pts warrants a scream celly even if it’s a scrimmage)
jack wouldn’t normally be like that for an asg but he’s LOVING the fact that almost all cellys include a hug
she views the all star weekend as one of her favourite nights and weekends off all time cause it’s one of the only times that all of the love she was getting and the love for her and jack overpowered all of the misogynistic keyboard warriors that hate women whining on socials and she had a completely positive weekend where all of her teammates were actually supportive and she felt wanted
commentators DO lose their shit over the two of them having such good chemistry and because commentating in the nhl is so bad i can assume that the words ‘a devil and a ranger’ were said about 28392748374 times that night alone
i want to say she gets mvp for the weekend but knowing the nhl it would be jack
he does not shut up about her during his interviews he’s like ‘she deserves this just as much or more than i do’ and then MORE people go insane cause jack ‘i didn’t know there was a town in new jersey’ hughes is eloquently complementing a teammate during a SCRUM

they’re giggling like they’re telling each other secrets and dawson is like ‘dude grow a pair and go fucking talk to her’
the next day luke’s texting her on the couch and she’s calling him moosey and her contact name is very incriminating and jacks a GROCUH for the rest of the day

her debut with the rangers is so awkward because obviously she was chosen and signed because she’s skilled and deserves her spot
but a lot of them just do not like her
it’s the biggest reason she requested her trade
the only friend she felt that didn’t secretly just hate her guts for existing was igor, who obviously couldn’t help her case much seeing as he’s stuck in the net
during her very first game she was on the third line and her line mates were trying their very best to keep the puck from her cause they didn’t trust her with it
during the third period they’re down by two and she just takes the puck and leaves with it while her centre is obviously trying to set up a play that she was not meant to be a part of
she goes for the five hole and pots it and they don’t even really celly with her other than going behind her to shake hands with the bench
this fixes nothing and they still don’t want her with the puck so the coach moves her up a line and there’s much better chemistry and cooperation despite them still not being her biggest fan
igor gets it to her for a breakaway and she goes bar down with him as the only assist
this is mostly because the other team is also really underestimating her and they feel like they don’t really need to be on her
they’re covering her line mates cause they’re assuming she’ll pass and set up the play especially since her pass was from the goalie
the game goes to a shootout and after the other team misses their third shot the coach just kinda looks at the bench and calls her name
she’s shocked and the arena is dead quiet when she goes out on the ice
like pin drop quiet
she wins them the game and pretty much tells them that if they underestimate her again she’ll just let them lose and that she was signed for a reason and they need to grow tf up
her devs debut goes much more smoothly. it’s definitely a little harder for her to score at this point cause the other teams aren’t underestimating her as much
however the tension with her and jack is at an all time high after that text conversation
the first point she scores is a goal and jack isn’t an assist, it’s bratter and johnny
during the celly she smiles at him cause she feels different than her rangers debut - she feels different with the team and she feels like they actually love her and want her around
he wants so badly to make it up to her for everything he said in his messages and all he can think to do right in that moment is to hold the back of her helmet and knock his visor against hers a little
halfway through the period things between them are going so much better and the chemistry is very much there
she assists on his goal and they recreate the celly from the all star game and then she screams in his face out of pure excitement
he’s smiling at her like she created the world and people go nuts for that whole thing
a little bit into the second period is her wonderwall concert
her and dawson are belting with each other and there’s a gifset that goes around of the two of them singing that pans to jack being all heart eyed for her
the next shift she gets another goal, this one assisted by him and luke and the vibes are absolutely immaculate
during the very same shift luke scores, assisted by her and jack and she jumps onto luke like a proud older sister and shakes jacks shoulders all excitedly
in the final period she scores her last goal to complete the hattrick, assisted solely by jack
that’s when she jumps into his arms and he kinda spins around with her and squeezes her tight so her skates come off the ice a little
dawsons on the ice for this one cause it was mid shift change and he fake gags at them
she sticks her tongue out at him and when he joins the hug jack slides down to his knees and hugs her legs like he did at the asg
dawson screams ‘you two are fucking disgusting’ at the top of his lungs and she throws her head back and laughs
the post game celly includes a lot of beer and a shot for every one of her points (it was a long night) (there was a lot of making out) (and a lot of dawson, luke and johnny being grossed out) (and a lot of nico being a proud dad)
- them being on the same team is so good for everyone involved

More autobiography
...I've rambled here about my art series. I haven't written much more about my life, but there is so much more, so here I go again. I left off in my teens, circa 1965, wandering New York, sneaking off from my suburban New Jersey home to explore and wonder and wander. Finally I graduated high school. My mother scored me a job in Monticello, NJ, at Swinging Bridge Lodge. It was a fabulous summer, I had my first sex, my first love, my days were filled with waiting tables and learning how to water ski from beautiful boys who wanted into my pants, my nights bartending (I was only 17 but everyone ignored that). My hair pulled up, a fake braid down my back, strumming my guitar, sitting behind the bar, cigarette dangling from my lips, wailing out Buffy St Marie and Joan Baez, life was sweet. It was then, one glowing evening sitting on the back porch of the Marina Restaurant, listening to Phil and Fanny Hype, the owners, chatter from the kitchen, gazing out across the lake, I visualized myself in my 80's, looking back at a life filled with adventures, telling my tales, and I knew between now and then I had to fulfill that self-prophecy...live my life to its fullest; grab every token, follow every path that presented itself, never let an opportunity go by. That was the real beginning, the intent to life my life to its fullest.
The summer passed. I returned to my NJ suburban home. I already had sculptures and drawings in a gallery in Englewood, the only artist showing, but Sharon Cohen, the owner, was so supportive she had somehow convinced my parents to let me pursue my studies at the University of Hartford Art School. It was a disaster. I didn't know how to be a student, I didn't follow the rules, I didn't understand or even know the rules and my fuck-it-all attitude annoyed the professors. The following summer, counselling at some Jewish sleep-away camp in upstate New York, teaching little people how to water ski, I met a girl who talked me into quitting school and getting a job at Columbia U. I just did it. The next day I was driving back home, I shucked the camp, college, and other people's ideas of what I should be doing with my life and slid out of it like an old, ratty, worn-out coat. I started commuting to my job at Low Library at Columbia on 116th St in NY, renovated my brother's unused bedroom into an art studio, got a bunch of drawings accepted at the Marissa del Rey Gallery on Madison Avenue, and my new life was underway.
Life slid into perfection. The 60's in New York was filled with civil disobedience, marches and sit-ins against the Vietnam war spilled out from Low Library onto the campus. I started seeing a boy who edited an underground newspaper filled with anarchy and insurrection, his tiny apartment in the Village smelled of Brussel Sprouts and cat litter and pot. Coming home at 2am stinking of Mary J, stoned out of my mind, sitting at the piano, composing and flying high. Commuting daily to my mindless job, weekends painting, drawing, exploring art, showings at my 2 galleries.
Mom decided I was drifting. Hear this voice, slightly Jewish NY accent, saying "Hally, you need something to fall back on. I signed you up for Katherine Gibbs. Go, you need a real job." Mothers. Can't live with them, can't be born without them. What could I do? I didn't have an alternative, the ultimate was given. My brother was living in Englewood with his friend, Dan Hennessey (yeah, he wasn't born in Toronto, he was born in Demarest, NJ -- Hi Dan, give me a call sometime) but he wouldn't let me move in, so I was trapped.
So I learned typing and shorthand. I hated every minute of it until I met Cheryl Vernon. Kindred spirit, gorgeous face with a marring split lip, we wore huge hats (hats were a must have at Katie Gibbs), white kid gloves that turned black from subway soot, heals under 2", skirts below your knees. It's 1968. Beatles, Donovan, folk rock. At the end of class every day we put our shoes and hats in our lockers, we rolled up the waists of our skirts to show our thighs, we put on our hip-high white patent leather boots that were definitely meant for walking, see-through shirts, chocolate Nat Sherman's delicately held to our glossy painted lips, we sauntered down Fifth Avenue with the rest of the girlie brigade.

The unmistakably reedy vibe of DiNizio’s baritone went out the other day. The Plainfield, New Jersey native was just 62 when he passed. He had been ill off and on lately, contending with “damage done to my neck and back in my recent falls” as he indicated on his Facebook page. Nevertheless, the Smithereens were planning to tour in 2018 and he was “getting in shape for [their] upcoming gigs.” I was all poised to get tickets to their show at B.B. King’s when they went on sale too. Today I’m crushed. I never had the privilege to hear DiNizio’s articulations in person. On the band’s website, the remaining trio wrote:
Today we mourn the loss of our friend, brother and bandmate Pat DiNizio. Pat had the magic touch. He channeled the essence of joy and heartbreak into hook-laden three minute pop songs infused with a lifelong passion for rock & roll. Our journey with Pat was long, storied and a hell of a lot of fun. We grew up together. Little did we know that we wouldn’t grow old together.
Goodbye Pat. Seems like yesterday.

DiNizio composed one of my all-time favorite songs: “A Girl Like You.” A rousing mix of Beatles-esque melody and XTC playfulness, the tune used to cut through the cacophony of my formative alternative rock listening years and demand I drop everything to listen to it. To my youthful sensibilities, no one else could put together a better wisp of doleful jubilation for four and a half minutes. And don’t get me started on the tune’s Rickenbacker/Telecaster lick--a crunchier tone has yet to be deployed.
If his Facebook posts are any clue, DiNizio was as jolly a spirit in real life as he was in musical form. Three days before his death, he cracked:

Aaron Pinnix on Non-Spaces & Magic Realism in Poetry
Q & A with Aaron Pinnix and editor Joanna C. Valente
JV: Let’s forget poetry for a second. What else are you obsessed with? What would be a perfect day for you?
AP: My perfect day (cue Reed) starts with a latte, reading my most recent S.P.D. purchase, packing book and Adventure Beer in my bag, and setting off on a bike ride toward the various forts and forgotten places of NYC. This city is so layered with simultaneous histories and experiences, this neat abandonment, recycling and reoccupation of spaces. - Floyd Bennett Field, Staten Island and Sandy Hook, NJ are personal favorites.
My obsession? I’m really interested in interstitial or “non”-spaces. Places where use value is ambiguous or varied. For instance cemeteries: In the Victorian era cemeteries were romanticized and used as a place where families would have weekend picnics. Now they are generally ignored, many falling into a disrepair which only adds to their beauty. They still operate though as a sort of pastoral environment and sanctuary for birds and animals, thus are full of life. Kara Walker’s “A Subtlety” is another good example of re-utilizing an abandoned space, here in order to make important claims about race, capitalist production, even gentrification. Of course one could argue that an interest in interstitial spaces, or spaces with ambiguous or complicated use value, also relates to poetry, which often operates within and between ambiguities.
How do you think magical realism lends itself to poetry?
I think magical realism (and science fiction, and utopic and dystopic literatures) point towards already existent latent, yet excised, alternatives within our own experiences. This ability to envision something in addition to (not infrequently capitalist based) models of reality allows for an ingression of new possibilities. As Derrida claims “The im- of the im-possible is indeed radical, implacable, undeniable. But it is not simply negative or dialectical: it introduces the possible.” (Within Such Limits, 361). Again, getting back to the ambiguities of poetry, poetry has this unique ability to introduce the possible. Magical realism is but one word/path for this.
Who are some of your favorite writers right now?
Heriberto Yépez’s The Empire of Neomemory is my jam right now. I’ve also been enjoying Lila Zemborain’s mauve sea-orchids, the work of Nicole Brossard, Bei Dao, Maggie Nelson’s Bluets, and Ladelle McWhorter’s Racism and Sexual Oppression in Anglo-America. Also, and always, the work of my friends, for instance Sarah Cook’s writing has been blowing me away lately.
What makes you uncomfortable?
Actually misogyny: I see so much gender based prejudice directed towards women here in New York City, at all levels- It’s pretty gross. Publicly (or privately) objectifying half the population, and then subjecting them to your fantasy, is a demeaning move for all involved. Uncomfortable may not be the right word. Disappointed in ourselves as a species may be more correct.
You’ve lived in so many different places. What were the poetry communities like? Do you prefer living in New York City? It’s funny to me, as poets, many of us choose to live in one of the roughest cities. Poets tend to be much more sensitive, and yet we put ourselves in a place unfit for us. Why is this?
I have complicated feelings about NYC, which is, I think, apt. I can say Frank O’Hara’s “Meditations in an Emergency” makes a lot more sense since moving here. Personally, while spending a lot of time in it, I often travel to some of the quieter places surrounding it (and within it). So NYC maybe means something different to me than to others. For me, it means taking the subway down to Jamaica Bay to see horseshoe crabs, or biking along the Staten Island seashore, as much as it does going to the MET or Broadway or poetry readings. And while poets may be “sensitive,” I think we’re also very curious. This means that a space as complicated and multivalent as NYC offers infinite possibilities for exploration and incursions, incursions which in turn prompt our own ruminations and writing. Like all people, poets crave stimulus, and NYC offers that in excess. We only must be sure to provide ourselves with the space and time to write (a required luxury).
Another thing I really like about NYC is its polyvocality. There are so many different modes and forms of expression.
This is not to gloss over NYC’s issues. For instance it’s so dirty! But I also enjoy watching rats on the subway tracks. Urban Pastoralism.
Various places all have their own issues. For instance, I am in some ways “unfit” for living in Alabama. Maine, while beautiful, is sparse (Oh! to have a coffee shop nearby). Ultimately though, my preference for where I abode is in direct relation to sharing space and time with my partner.

I WAKE UP WITH STRENGTH IN MY HEART
Good morning to those who of you who've made a valiant effort to rise at 8:24 AM on the fifteenth day of September in the year of our Lord, 2017. I hope that your heart and other vital organs are working optimally? What have you got planned for the upcoming weekend? If there's anything of importance on your "To-Do" List, I trust it's interesting, exciting and of benefit to you and yours? Maybe you'll do something beneficial to the world as a whole? If so, do you have the strength and fortitude to help make it happen? I for one certainly hope so. The world can use some "reconstruction" and soon. It's not falling apart, but some holes need to be plugged. These holes don't require those with extensive experience in the construction industry. What's needed is a few good "dudes and dudettes," who've got some time on their hands to devote to the betterment of the world as a whole. Can we put your name on the list? If your answer is yes, please advise.

Weather forecasting is like shooting craps, sometimes you win, and sometimes you don't. Regardless of what happens, they'll still receive a paycheck on a scheduled basis.

SHADOW WOODS METAL FEST, the Mid-Atlantic’s only open-air camping heavy metal gathering, is pleased to announce the complete lineup for the 2017 festival, which runs from Thursday, September 14th through Sunday, September 17th at White Hall, Maryland’s Camp Hidden Valley. For the third year, the festival will host 39 of the undergrounds leading bands, representing all genres and subgenres of heavy metal.
Over three days, the four stages of SHADOW WOODS METAL FEST will come to life inside the woodsy landscape of Camp Hidden Valley. “Every year has been special, but I am just particularly stoked about what we have curated”, says Mary Spiro, organizer of Shadow Woods Productions LLC. “I am extremely honored to present the lineup this year because I think it reflects the best of the underground metal scene as well as some of the personal favorites of the festival organizers. Several of these bands, I have been trying to host at the fest since the first year and I am happy to finally have them play.”
Beginning on Thursday night, the Pavilion stage will light up and set the tone to the weekend with all-acoustic and intimate performances with Portland’s dark-folk soloist AERIAL RUIN and West Virginia’s Appalachian folk duo, NECHOCHWEN. As the moon illuminates the sky on Friday, San Francisco occultists CASTLE will conjure heavy doomed thrash at the Woodland Stage and Boston’s HUMAN BODIES will deliver raw, blackened punk on the Field Stage. On Saturday, as darkness falls over the Woodland Stage, atmospheric blackened folk giants PANTOPICON will play an exclusive, 70-minute set under the backdrop of the stars. Georgia’s tortured blackened death quintet WITHERED, Brooklyn black metal titans WOE, Rhode Island sludgy-doom foursome CHURCHBURN, mysterious blackened grind band DEAD IN THE MANGER, and San Francisco extreme death quintet VASTUM (one of two east coast shows), will all deliver exclusive performances to SHADOW WOODS METAL FEST.

Carolee Schneemann Wins Venice Biennale Golden Lion—and the 9 Other Biggest News Stories This Week
Catch up on the latest art news with our rundown of the 10 stories you need to know this week.
01 Pioneering feminist artist Carolee Schneemann has won the Venice Biennale Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.

During her roughly six-decade-long career, Schneemann has fundamentally shifted the dialogue around sexuality and gender through her practice, while also making important contributions to performance art. Schneemann is perhaps best known for her work of the 1960s and ’70s—including Interior Scroll (1975), a performance in which the artist stripped naked, pulled a scroll covered with feminist texts from her vagina, and read them to the crowd. In a statement, Christine Macel, the curator of the forthcoming edition of the Venice Biennale, said that Schneemann “situates women as both the creator and an active part of the creation itself. In opposition to traditional representation of women merely as nude object, she uses the naked body as a primal, archaic force which could unify energies.” The artist’s more recent work continues to denounce conventional oppressive male gender norms, something that Schneemann herself has noted remains relevant in the era of Donald Trump. Schneemann will receive her award at the Venice Biennale in a ceremony taking place on May 13th to coincide with the show’s opening.
02 Two Iranian art dealers accused of espionage will go to trial next week in Tehran.

The married couple, Karan Vafadari and Afarin Niasari, run Tehran’s Aun Gallery. They were arrested in the Tehran airport in July of last year, and have been incarcerated since then. They stand accused of espionage, collaborating with enemies of the state, and “attempting to overthrow the Islamic Republic of Iran.” Vafadari’s sister Kateh, who administers a blog with updates and information on their situation, wrote that earlier charges were dropped by the prosecutor but have been since reinstated. She wrote that the couple were accused of having “unethical and inappropriate art,” although one of the gallery’s artists, Bizhan Bassiri, had been approved by the Minister of Culture for a show in the Venice Biennale. Niasari had been en route to Italy to begin work on Bassiri’s project when she was arrested.
03 Art Cologne is in advanced negotiations to acquire abc art berlin contemporary, a move that would unite Germany’s two sometimes-rival art capitals.

In an statement on Wednesday, abc art berlin contemporary confirmed its pending takeover by Art Cologne parent company, Koelnmesse, which was initially reported by Germany’s Art Magazine. The resulting fair, should negotiations conclude as presumed, will be called Art Berlin and take place during abc’s normal run of September 14–17. Art Cologne director Daniel Hug and abc and Gallery Weekend Berlin director Maike Cruse will jointly helm Art Berlin at its onset. The event would symbolically bring together the two cities, which have been sometimes rivals over the past 25 years of Germany’s art world development. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall, Cologne’s position in the wealthy Rhineland and proximity to the Benelux region made it a much more profitable marketplace. But Berlin’s low rents and abundant space drew artists in droves—and, in step, renowned galleries to represent them. Art Berlin is in some respects a result of that rivalry; Hug and Cruse hatched the idea while resolving a scheduling conflict between Art Cologne and Gallery Weekend Berlin, with the two events taking place in the same week this year (Art Cologne opens on April 25th and Gallery Weekend kicks off on the 27th). The acquisition also comes shortly after the MCH Group announced its own acquisition of ART DÜSSELDORF, a new fair launched by the founders of art.fair Cologne.
04 Writer Randy Kennedy is leaving the New York Times to join Hauser & Wirth.

Hauser & Wirth announced this week that Randy Kennedy, who has written for the New York Times since 1992, will join the gallery as Director of Special Projects. Kennedy will oversee “a number of new editorial, writing, and documentary initiatives,” a role that includes relaunching and serving as editor-in-chief for the gallery’s print publication Volume, which temporarily shuttered after publishing its Winter 2015 edition. The move by Hauser & Wirth is another indication that blue-chip galleries are devoting greater focus toward editorial and published content; in 2014, Gagosian brought on journalist Derek Blasberg to develop its print properties, the same year that David Zwirner rolled out its standalone publishing house. Hauser & Wirth Vice President Marc Payot welcomed Kennedy in a statement, praising his “curiosity, talent, depth of knowledge, and uncanny sensitivity toward the visions and intentions of artists.”
05 Artist Arturo Di Modica, who created Wall Street’s iconic Charging Bull, has called for the Fearless Girl statue to be moved.

Di Modica isn’t happy about the recent addition of the widely buzzed-about Fearless Girl to downtown Manhattan park Bowling Green. In a press conference Wednesday, Di Modica’s lawyers argued that the bronze girl defiantly staring down Charging Bull (1989) isn’t so much art as an advertisement by the work’s corporate sponsors, allowing them to profit from Di Modica’s piece and violating his copyright. But they also charge that the new statue—which ostensibly highlights the gender and pay gap on Wall Street—alters the originally positive message of Charging Bull without Di Modica’s permission, violating the artist’s legal rights. Although a lawsuit has not yet been filed, even the potential claim raises novel legal questions about whether a statute known as the Visual Artist Rights Act (VARA) protects the intangible message of a work of public sculpture.
06 The FBI has warned that “hundreds more” fake post-war paintings created by a forgery mastermind could still be in circulation.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations issued a warning on its website that “hundreds more” forged paintings by convicted art dealer and forger Eric Spoutz, who was sentenced in February, may still be circulating. “Spoutz was a mill,” said Special Agent Christopher McKeogh of the FBI’s Art Crime Team in the New York Field Office, who pursued the case for over three years. Spoutz forged paperwork for the artworks, including paintings and works on paper supposedly by American masters such as Joan Mitchell and Willem de Kooning, using an old typewriter. He billed himself as an art dealer, and did in fact hail from an artistic family. “Spoutz became an artist in his own right—a con artist peddling fakes,” the FBI statement said. “His specialty was forging the paperwork that he used as proof of authenticity to sell bogus works.”
07 Eleven House Republicans have added their signatures to a letter defending the National Endowment for the Arts, slated to be eliminated under President Trump’s proposed budget.

In the face of President Donald Trump’s proposed elimination of the National Endowment for the Arts, 32 House representatives—including 11 Republicans—endorsed a bipartisan letter defending the agency. Signees advocated not only preserving the NEA, but increasing its modest budget from $148 million to $155 million. The letter was sent to Representatives Ken Calvert (R-CA) and Betty McCollum (D-MN), chair and top ranking member, respectively, of the House subcommittee that allocates funds to cultural endowments. Initiated by Congressional Arts Caucus chairs Louise M. Slaughter (D-NY) and Leonard Lance (R-NJ), the letter addresses the NEA’s vital efforts to “support arts and health in the military” through its Creative Forces arts therapy program and the $729 billion funneled into the economy by the arts and culture sector. This is not the first time that conservatives have spoken out against the proposed elimination of the NEA; senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) joined 22 Democrats in signing an earlier letter urging Trump to preserve the endowment.
08 The director of the Israel Museum has resigned less than two months into his tenure.

Eran Neuman, who succeeded James Snyder as director in February, has stepped down from his role due to “differences of perception in his role and working conditions,” according to a museum statement issued last week. The New York Times reported that contractual disagreements might have played a role in the abrupt departure. Neuman, who until now had been working part-time as director, will return to his position as head of Tel Aviv University’s School of Architecture. Meanwhile, Deputy Director Ayelet Shiloh Tamir will serve as the acting director as the museum searches for a permanent replacement. The ambiguous explanation of Numan’s resignation has been interpreted by some close to museum leadership as indicating Neuman had misjudged the extent of his responsibilities. Others close to Neuman, however, contend that Snyder—as of January the museum’s international president and director emeritus—sought to maintain undue influence over future exhibitions. Museum officials have declined to comment on the departure beyond their initial statement, which thanked Neuman for his support during his tenure.
09 Knoedler & Company has settled another lawsuit related to the gallery’s Rothko forgery scandal.

Another of the 10 lawsuits filed against Knoedler & Company and Swiss art historian Oliver Wick for the sale of forged artworks was settled Tuesday for an undisclosed amount. Frank J. Fertitta III, plaintiff in the case, alleged Wick and the New York gallery had knowingly sold him a forged Mark Rothko painting in 2008 for $7.2 million. Wick, who received $150,000 from Fertitta and $300,000 from Knoedler for his role in authenticating the work, had previously stated via email that “all is perfectly fine,” adding that “for this I stand with my name as a Rothko scholar.” Wick’s lawyers, however, contend that he had never personally vouched for the work’s legitimacy. The Rothko in question is one of 40 forgeries (30 of which were sold) created by Glafira Rosales, who then passed them to Knoedler. Gallery director Ann Freedman denies all prior knowledge that the works were fake, and neither the gallery nor Wick faced criminal charges for the sales.
10 The director of Poland’s Museum of the Second World War was fired following the right-wing government’s takeover of the institution.

The dismissal of director Pawel Machcewicz from the Museum of the Second World War followed court approval on April 5th of the merger between that institution and the as yet unbuilt Westerplatte Museum. The later museum was proposed by Piotr Glinski, the culture minister of the governing, right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party. The merger cemented government control over the WWII museum, and on April 6th acting director Karol Nawrocki was appointed to head the merged museums. The Museum of the Second World War has been a target of the PiS party since it took power in 2015; nationalist officials viewed the museum’s content as overly universal, with too little emphasis on the nation’s wartime activities. Machcewicz told The Art Newspaper that while Nawrocki may introduce changes to the exhibitions currently on view, he plans to fight to protect the displays using copyright laws.

During the weekend of February 24, 2017, myself and a fellow beer connoisseur received two press passes from the NYC Brewers Guild to attend the Opening Bash Invitational at the Brooklyn Expo Center which serves as the kick-off to NYC Beer Week. This is The Guild’s Eighth Annual New York City Beer week.

“The mission of the New York City Brewers Guild is to advocate for and promote awareness of its local brewing members; to increase the visibility of local beers through innovative events, programming, and consumer education; and to foster a healthy, ethical, and growth-focused craft beer industry throughout the city.”
The Opening Bash Invitational started at 6:30 and lasted till about 9:30 p.m. The location was easily accessible and enticing due to the Expo Center’s architecture. While waiting to get in, you were able to see where all the various breweries were located, as well as the games and food.

Needless to say, there were quite a few breweries! Here is some information about some of my favorites of the night…
Indian Ladder Farmstead Cidery and Brewery
Indian Ladder Farmstead is “dedicated to the farm to table movement, or in this case–farm to glass”. They recently celebrated their centennial in 2016. The company is run by the fourth generation of the Ten Eyck Family (call me old-fashioned, but I have a lot of respect for family-run businesses, especially in this day and age). This cidery/brewery which originally started as a dairy farm that raised beef cattle is now well known for their fruit, especially their apples which led to their delicious DRY refreshing cider that I adored tasting…
Dry Hard Cider
Made from freshly pressed, gluten-free New York State apples. Available in 4-packs.
ABV: 6.1%
Taste: This isn’t your average cider. It hits the tongue (and nostrils) with a distinguishable fresh aroma of bittersweet apples. Not too bitter and not too sweet, this cider is sure to bring attention to itself with a dry delicious after-taste. I HIGHLY recommend trying it out for yourself.
Super Local Pale Ale
Made in collaboration with Interboro Ales & Spirits using 100% single farm hops & grains from their farm. The hops include Nugget, Brewers Gold, and Cascade, while the grains includes 2-row Synergy and Navarro Oats, both malted at Hudson Valley Malt.
ABV: 6%
Taste: Tangy with a clear bitter finish. Stands out as an IPA with it’s malty smooth mouthfeel.
Coney Island Brewery
I am now a “Boardwalker,” aka a fan of the brewery. This table was a big hit at the event. The historic location of the brewery helped to make this beer well known among the beer crowd. They currently have limited releases of their speciality styles including SuperFreak, Kettle Corn Cream Ale and Cotton Candy Kolsch. Ths brewery definitely brought a sense of surprise and creativity to the table.
Honey New York Stout
ABV: 8%
Taste: Full-bodied smooth sweet molasses flavor with notes of caramel, citrus and honey blended in.
Infectious Smile
A sour ale brewed with malt and hops.
ABV: 4.8%
Taste: Sour grapefruit and vanilla flavors. Made exclusively for NYC Craft Beer Week 2017. The name resembles the beer; once you try it you can’t stop smiling!
Third Rail Brewery
Wins for bringing the most original flavored Stout of the night. Not only were the brewers nice people, but their beer was EXCELLENT. Both my accomplice and I couldn’t get over the smooth delicious original taste it left us with. I’m already looking forward to visiting this brewery in-person.
Alternate Side Stout (Limited – 2016)
ABV: 10.5%
Taste: Full-bodied stout, containing dark malts and flavors of spice, caramel and coffee. The after-taste is filled with spicy peppers, Mexican cinnamon and a smooth smoke. I miss this beer! R.F., my tasting partner said, “I liked it a lot. It was very robust. It was like the inside of a wood burning stove”. I find it interesting that R.F. knew what the inside of a wood-burning stove looked and tasted like. What an interesting Dude!
Brooklyn Brewery
A New York favorite and also among the most popular at the Fest.
Cloaking Device
Limited edition, 100% Brett-Fermented Porter aged 9 months in French Oak red wine barrels.
ABV: 10.5%
Taste: A surprising air of class at first smell. A mix of earthy aromas, vanilla, pineapple fruit and a smooth finish. This Porter is sure to brings a happy vibe to anybody’s night. Fun fact: this Porter was made with Champagne yeast made in their lab.
Singlecut Brewery
Regarded as the first operating micro-brewery in Queens since Prohibition. Going towards a more “hip” vibe. The owner and music obsessed brewer Rich Buceta states:
My obsession is creating original hop-driven beer; distinguished by a firm respect and admiration for West Coast pioneers, and bending that to our East Coast / NYC interpretation.
Their mission statement: Mastery Knows No Shortcut. Well said!
Weird & Gilly
“Cats from Japan line up for this..”
ABV: 6.6%
Taste: IPA with citrus fruit notes and pine resin which equaled out to a refreshing strong bitter taste. Unique in its own right.

Singlecut Brewery’s Czech/German Flagship Lager
ABV: 5.4%
Taste: “Classic, Crisp, Horizontal.” Pilsner with light lemon notes and a hint of spice.
Staten Island Beer Company
Another New York favorite. The Brewmaster of this is Jonathan Schulman who started out brewing in his basement at home in Staten Island: “I have that dream that all home brewers dream — of having all their beer.” From hobby-to-passion, Schulman’s “Staten Island Brewery” represents the American Beer Dream. His company proudly produces beer that is both straightforward and flavorful.
For Wheat’s Sake
ABV: 4.9%
Taste: Pour is smooth with a light golden body. Contains American grain, Warrior, Amarillo, and Simcoe hops, but the wheat tends to over pour the beer in a bitter (not so sweet) sense. In conclusion, if you like light bitter wheat-tasting beverages this is the beer for you!
Ithaca Brewery
Won for having the friendliest staff. Their smiles and welcoming demeanor immediately drew me in. I could tell this Brewery was full of passionate people that enjoy the simplicity of good company spent over a pint of beer.
Flower Power
This popular beer is available year round and has a 2-row pale, honey malt containing five hops including Simcoe, Chinook, Citra, Ahtanum, and Centennial. This award winning beer has made it to the National IPA Championship Final Four in 2008, 2010 and 2011.
ABV: 7.5%
Taste: Notes of clover honey, grapefruit and pineapple with a bold soothing full body. If beer was a meal – this could fill you. It’s their most popular and well-known product they have in-stock for a reason. Fun fact: the fermentation process is hopped and dry-hopped five different times when it is being made. Its creation is as unique as the flavors in the beer itself. Definitely the type of beer you sip throughout the night.
Midnight Sun
This beer was named after an episode of the “Twilight Zone” where they reference a painting of one of Ithaca’s waterfalls. Rod Serling, the creator of The Twilight Zone (it’s my favorite television show of all time!), called the episode “The Midnight Sun” that is about the Earth falling out of orbit and two women coping with the increasingly oppressive heat in a nearly abandoned city. If only they had Ithaca’s Midnight Sun beer replenish them!
ABV: 5.5%
Taste: A new dark lager that contains an incredibly smooth finish. Similar to a German hoppy beer with aromas of chocolate, caramel, toffee, coffee and a bit of spice.
BIG aLICE BREWING
They pride themselves on producing small batches of craft beer, each specially made with a creative experimental mindset. They are also a New York State Farm Brewery with each ingredient coming from locally grown farms.
Biggie Smash Beer Barley Wave
ABV: 12%
Taste: Contained a malt complexity with very rich and sharp barley notes. It’s heavy and thick in its finish. The alcohol content is strong, so be sure to take your time sipping this one.
Sweet Potato Farmhouse
ABV: 6.3%
Taste: Very sweet when it hits the tongue. Unique in it’s presentation and ingredients. Soft aroma of sweet potato with no traces of anything else. Good beer if you’re looking to try something different.
Askew Brewing
An all-grain naturally gluten-free brewery. They’re all fans of fermentation at Askew, whether it be pickles, kimchi, kombucha, or beer; the process and products of fermentation are things they feel a strong connection to. Askew Brewing consists of five friends and relatives from the NY/NJ area. Headed by their Brew Master, Travis Mullen, they continue to expand their array of tasty brews as beer drinkers continue to expand their palates…
It’s simple really, we brew what we like to drink. While beer is the passion, the overall vision is much larger. As we continue to pump out delicious concoctions, we are building the plan to move our operation to the Hudson Valley and open our Brewery on a Farm, alongside a CSA and community art-space. We hope our beer will help build and strengthen the community.

Fever Dream
ABV: 8.9%
Taste: Their dank and sticky DIPA. Brewed with a balanced malt bill of barley, oats, and wheat and a copious amount of post-boil additions including Mosaic, Citra, and Amarillo hops. The result is both fruity and creamy.

Woodward Extract
At the event we walked by this stand with brownies and various types of extracts. The food at a beer festival tends to be chosen for specific reasons, i.e. it isn’t just any food… its taste compliments what you’re drinking! This particular company had samples of brownies made with their Bird’s Eye Chili Extract. It was very different from the chocolate brownies that I’m used to eating, and as a matter of fact, it was better!
The Bird’s Eye Chili Extract: Handmade in Brooklyn with organic fair trade Thai chilies. It lends a complex flavor and just enough heat to savory dishes, drinks and desserts. This extract flavored brownie largely complimented all the craft beer I was drinking so I HIGHLY recommend that you try it (the recipe is available on their website).
If you’re a meat lover, you are going to LOVE this next one…
Slant Shack: A New Slant on Shacking

The event told them to come up with something original to draw a crowd and they kept their promise…
We were talking with Sara Kaplan the freelance event coordinator from the NY Brewers Guild. Since we did not have any brews to share, she wanted us to think of something cool at our table that was a little out of the ordinary. Our group got together to figure out what we could do. Originally we were going to do a slideshow of the farm but after brainstorming this a bit, we thought it would be really cool to showcase our hop varieties and make it into a contest by having people try to identify hops by smelling them. So we lined up five varieties in jars marked only by numbers. We provided variety descriptions and a list of the varieties that were in the jars.
Fun fact: I learned from them that a lot of people in the business know that back in the 1800’s New York State was the largest producer of hops in the US. Their goal, along with many others, is to help bring this business back to NY. Great group of people, but then again all beer goers tend to be.
Side note: I was one of the brilliant 6 that won a t-shirt.

Q1: What did you do at the event and what was your favorite activity?
RF: I went from table to table trying all the different beers. Though I have to say my favorite activity was the Galaga machine where I had the high score by the time that I left under “DCK”.
Q2: Who are you to me and why did I bring you?
RF: I am a beer connoisseur and expert beer taster.
Q3: If you had to pick a beer to describe me, your girlfriend, what would it be?
RF: “You are “Weird & Gilly” from Singlecut Brewery because you are both sweet and occasionally sour, but always a bit weird.”
Q4: Which Brewery surprised you the most and why?
RF: Third Rail Ale. The beer was just so overwhelming in all of its smokey and woody flavors and more intense than anything I’ve ever tried before.
Q5: Do you prefer fine wine or good beer?
RF: Good beer, 100%!
