The Russian Navy's Humiliating Defeat 117-Years Ago 'The Battle of Tsushima'
Since Russia launched its attack on Ukraine in late February, a heavily outnumbered and outgunned adversary has handed the Russian navy several high-profile losses.
The Russians have lost at least five Raptor-class patrol boats, one Tapir-class landing ship, one Serna-class landing craft, and most notably the Moskva, a Slava-class guided-missile cruiser that was also the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet.
The losses themselves are not catastrophic for the Russian navy and are unlikely to alter the course of the war or the balance of power in the Black Sea, but they are blows to Russian prestige and come a little over a century after another historic debacle for Russia: the Battle of Tsushima, the last time a Russian navy flagship was sunk in combat.
The Japanese and Russian empires fought in the waters between Korea and southern Japan on May 27 and 28 in 1905. The battle cemented Japan's rise as an equal to Western powers and had a lasting impact on both empires.
Competing empires
Japan's overwhelming victory in the Sino-Japenese War in 1895 had stoked tensions between the Japanese and Russian empires.
Japan, equipped with an organized, modern army, pursued ambitions in Korea and China that brought it dangerously close to Russian interests, especially in Manchuria and Korea.
Of particular importance to Russia was Port Arthur — now Dalian, China — which it leased and was the Russian Empire's only warm-water Pacific port. Port Arthur became the headquarters of Russia's Pacific Fleet and the government had plans to connect it to Russia via the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Negotiations between Japan and Russia over the future of the region went nowhere, and on February 8, 1904, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the main part of the Russian Pacific Fleet at Port Arthur, formally declaring war hours later.
Japan gained a naval advantage relatively quickly. It fought off an attempt by the main part of the Russian Pacific Fleet to break the blockade of Port Arthur and largely defeated Russia's Vladivostok-based squadrons at Chemulpo Bay and Ulsan — victories that allowed Japan to effectively dominate the Pacific.
Unwilling to concede defeat, and with Japanese ground forces beginning a siege of Port Arthur itself, Russia's Tsar Nicholas II ordered the creation of the 2nd Pacific Squadron, which would be made up of ships from the Baltic Fleet.
Commanded by Vice Adm. Zinovy Rozhestvensky, some 40 ships — including 11 pre-dreadnought battleships, nine cruisers, and nine destroyers — composed the 2nd Pacific Squadron.
Sailing from the Baltic in October 1904, they were supposed to relieve the Pacific Fleet at Port Arthur, destroy any Japanese ships they encountered, and cut the supply lines between Japan and mainland Asia.
Russia's doomed fleet
Russia's navy had been modernized in during the latter half of the 1800s, but while the 2nd Pacific Squadron appeared strong on paper, it was not a first-rate naval force. Some of the warships were new and untested, but many were old and bordered on obsolete. Others were little more than auxiliary ships with guns mounted on them.
Russian Navy leadership was also of low quality. Many of its officers came from wealthy and connected families who simply bought their commissions. The rank-and-file sailors were not much more professional, as many of them were inexperienced conscripts.
These issues were on full display during the seven-month, 18,000-mile journey to the Pacific.
While in the North Sea near England, the fleet opened fire on British fishing trawlers, somehow thinking they were Japanese torpedo boats. The mistake killed two fishermen, injured one, and sunk one trawler while damaging four others. In the chaos, some of the Russian ships even fired on each other, causing casualties and damage.
Diplomatic maneuvering managed to prevent the British from joining the war on the side of Japan, but the Russian fleet's troubles were only beginning.
Most of the fleet sailed around Africa rather than through the Suez Canal. The longer journey took a toll on the crews, who had never experienced such a different climate or such a long time at sea. The ships themselves were also under considerable strain. During gunnery practice with a mock target towed by a cruiser, the only thing the fleet hit was the cruiser.
With no allies, the Russians couldn't dock in friendly ports, and so they had to take on more coal while at sea. Conditions on the ships deteriorated, and disease and respiratory issues killed a number of sailors.
By the time the fleet was in Madagascar in January, Port Arthur had fallen. Their mission was then changed: They were to meet the remnants of Russia's Pacific Fleet in Vladivostok before engaging the Japanese in a decisive battle.
Slaughter at Tsushima
When the Russian ships finally reached the Tsushima Strait on the night of May 26, 1905, Rozhestvensky attempted to slip through unnoticed. Unfortunately for him, a patrolling Japanese vessel had spotted one of his ships.
Even more unfortunately, the Russian ship mistakenly believed the Japanese vessel was a lost Russian ship and signaled that more Russian ships were nearby.
With the location of his enemy confirmed, Japanese Adm. Tōgō Heihachirō's Combined Fleet — which included four modern battleships, over 20 cruisers, 21 destroyers, and 43 torpedo boats — set out to meet them.
On the morning of May 27, the fleets made contact. Before the firing began, Tōgō hoisted a signal flag that conveyed a predetermined message to his fleet: "The Empire's fate depends on the result of this battle, let every man do his utmost duty."
The ensuing battle was a slaughter. In addition to better training, discipline, and experience, the Japanese were equipped with modern armor-piercing rounds that tore the Russian ships apart.
By the end of the day, the Japanese had sunk four Russian battleships. Imperator Aleksandr III sank with its entire crew of over 700 sailors, while Borodino sank with all but one of its more than 800 crew members.
The flagship, Knyaz Suvorov, sank with all but 20 officers, while about half of Oslyabya's crew went down with the ship. The Japanese sunk a number of cruisers and destroyers as well.
As night fell, the survivors attempted to make it to Vladivostok under cover of darkness. Tōgō's destroyers hunted them down, picking off two more battleships and several other warships. By the following afternoon, most of the survivors surrendered.
Lost prestige
Russian losses were immense: 21 ships sunk or scuttled, and seven captured. Only three ships reached Vladivostok, though six others made it to neutral ports in China, the Philippines, and Madagascar.
The Japanese killed over 4,000 Russian sailors were killed and captured almost 6,000. The Japanese lost only three torpedo boats with just 117 killed and about 500 wounded — including a young Isoroku Yamamoto, mastermind of the attack on Pearl Harbor, who lost two fingers in the battle.
The Russian navy's prestige never recovered after Tsushima. It saw little major action in World War I, being unable to rebuild to the same grand scale. The Soviet Navy also only saw limited action in World War II and never truly proved itself during the Cold War, though Soviet submarines were a constant concern for NATO navies.
Today, the Russian navy boasts a smaller, more modern fleet that focuses on green-water operations rather than high-seas campaigns, but its surprising losses against Ukraine show it has yet to regain the dominance it lost a century ago.

Today we are celebrating Slava, a Serbian religious holiday which tells us about the day when the Dejan's ancestor joined the Orthodox church. For us, he made this on Saint Nicholas's day.

Saint Nicholas Day!
Tumblr media
Activity title: Celebrating and preparing for Saint Nicholas day
Type of activity: Creativity
Date: 17th-21st December, 2020
Learning outcomes:
◇ I have identified my own strengths and developed areas for personal growth.
◇ I have demonstrated that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
◇ I have shown commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences.
◇ I have demonstrated the skills and recognized the effects of working collaboratively.
Tumblr media
Activity description: December 19th was my slava, Saint Nicholas. Before that, my family members and I prepared various dishes for the feast, after which we celebrated it and spent a relaxing day together.
Tumblr media
Reflection: I genuinely value Serbian tradition and Saint Nicholas is one of my favourite holidays. I`ve always been into cooking but I haven`t seriously tried my hand at baking, and all I can tell you is - I will definitely be trying it again! As you can see on the collage I made, we baked hazelnut nests (my favourite!) and bajadera (another national nougat dish), meanwhile my father and sister took care of the savory dishes.  It relaxed me greatly and I also got to spend quality time with my mother, which is always a great thing. I can`t wait to repeat it next year as well and to invest more of my time in baking!

almost no one knows him but i’m here to talk about him,,
Ognjeslav Kostović Stepanović
(or Огњеслав Костовић Степановић in serbian)
Tumblr media
this guy. this is my great something grandpa and he is the ultimate madlad.
he was a russian serbian inventor AND a russian military and navy captain. starting off with his inventions because omg there’s lot and i’m not getting into all of them:
he created a prototype of the submarine and called it “fish-boat”
no materials fit his needs so he created his own. arbonite, commonly known as plywood
he built his own petrol engine
designed at least two hot air balloons
in the early 1880s designed and built an aircraft (about 20 years before ferdinand von zeppelin) but he never got to test it since it ended up being destroyed in a fire
these are only some of his inventions but there are a probably a lot more. however, since he was part of the russian military, some of them remain secret. (talking about his military service, during the russian-turkish war an explosion ended up blinding him in one eye)
now his family. he was born in a serbian noble family in 1851, his grandpa owned a lot of land and had a wheat business, his father married an austrian girl but then he ended up dying of tuberculosis when he was young so his mother, elizabeth, was left to care for 5 children, including ognjeslav.
he had three daughter two of which became nurses during the the first world war guess with who else... Nadežda Petrović,, like, the painter.
he also had weird relations with royal families. he visited the czar’s palace often and some sources said that he was friends with the empress of russia, alexandra feodorovna. his brother on the other hand worked for the serbian royal family and was natalie’s (natalie of serbia) personal accountant.
now the funniest part; he was friends with dmitri mendeleev, yes the guy who created the modern day periodic table. they were very close friends. like,, awfully close friends. they attended the same parties together, every year when ognjeslav celebrated the slava of saint nicholas, dmitri was invited, some people even say they might have lived together (they were,, alleged?? roommates)
he ended up dying in saint petersburg in 1916 when he was 65 years old and almost no one remembers him
that’s it for ognjeslav today might write more about him later but there really isn’t a lot of stuff on him

The Church of St. Nicholas (Shtoj) Around the 13th century, it is assumed in 1346, the Benedictine abbey was built that is now known as St. Nicholas Church in the Shtoj area. In 1553, it was left because of the invasion of the Turk. It was damaged by the earthquake in 1979 and later rebuilt with the UNESCO fundraiser, where it was ordained in 1988. The materials used to build this church are: stone, lime, cement and other building materials. The church has a length of 20m and a width of 8m. The courtyard of the church is filled with graves, some of which belong to Albania. This church is one of the oldest Catholic churches in the territory of Ulcinj. The history of the church is found in the traditions, stories and relations of the then bishops.
This church plays a special role not only in historical and in cultural but also in religious view. It is a special church where people of different faiths attend the mass. This can be especially noticed on the feast of St. Nicholas on May 9th, where believers from different religions and different countries of the world come to participate in the mass. It is worth noting that many miracles have taken place in this church, one of which is the healing of both children and adults, regardless of their faith, from various illnesses.
In the church there are many old statues (2 of St. Nicholas, 1 of St. Roko, 1 of the Virgin Mary) as well as various kinds of flags for procession brought from Italy, which are about 100 years old. An old legend says: "The Venetians carried the bones of St. Nicholas after his death from East Asia to Bari of Italy. Because of the bad weather they were obligated to spend the night exactly in the territory where this church is today. The Venetian journey lasted from the 6th December till the 9th May of the next year.” This is why St. Nicholas' feast is celebrated twice a year in this church.

It is one of the greatest Slava, St. Nicholas, celebrated in Serbia today. On this day, the ancestor of the family adopted Christianity. In the morning, Serbs go to church, then they break a loaf and entertain guests all day. The Bowie Counterparts
In the months after Bowie’s death, Kian S. Bergstrom put up a wonderful list on Facebook in which he paired every single Bowie album with a thematically appropriate film (first) and book (second). Having just rediscovered this list in my files (I cut-and-pasted it at the time & feared I’d lost it), I felt like it should be shared more widely. Hope he doesn’t mind.
Some connections are obvious; others, not so much, but often quite inspired. All of these films and novels are worth checking out, in any case. As canons go, this is a superb one. Off to the library and streaming services, Bowie fans.

Who knew that “A Christmas Carol” could be so dangerous!
The assaults begin even before the first line of dialogue in the new, charming if overlong, and extraordinarily well-designed Broadway production of Charles Dickens’ 1843 classic, starring Campbell Scott as Ebenezer Scrooge and Andrea Martin and LaChanze as Ghosts of Christmas Past and Present. Cast members on the stage dressed as 19th century English blokes and birds throw clementines and cookies to (at?) the audience…vigorously.
“I’m suing,” said somebody sitting behind me, in a comical impression of Scrooge, after he was hit by one of the packages of chocolate chips.  “Are you an attorney?”
Later, at a climactic moment in the story, an entire Christmas dinner comes shooting down from the mezzanine, piece by piece. Long links of sausages dropped directly onto audience laps, and we were urged to pass them onto the stage, where the spectacular feast was assembled.
These enlivening assaults by food were part of the production’s wondrous stagecraft, which also features a dark set warmly lit by lanterns and graced by bells, and two separate snow storms – which looked and felt like real snow (in control to the paper blizzard at Slava’s Snowshow.) There are also a dozen Christmas carols. The first song is worked into the narrative humorously:
Carol singers who show up at Scrooge’s door: oh tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy Scrooge: Oh Christ Carol singers: God rest ye merry gentlemen Let nothing you dismay Scrooge: You dismay me.
The last carol — Silent Night, performed entirely by handbells held by the cast – concludes the show and is one of the two most moving moments in it.
The other moment, surprisingly moving, involves Tiny Tim, portrayed refreshingly by one of two young boys who have disabilities (I saw it with Sebastian Ortiz.) He hugs Scrooge and says “God Bless Us Every One.”
Originally produced by the Old Vic in England, this Christmas Carol is a fairly faithful adaptation of the story of a miser’s redemption after a nightmarish visit by several ghosts. All the changes to the tale are slight and beneficial, especially the effort at an inclusive cast: All three ghosts, for example, are women.  The whole enterprise reflects the trademark strengths of its creative team — written by Jack Thorne, the playwright of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and directed by Michael Warchus, whose extensive Broadway credits include “Ghost The Musical,” “Matilda The Musical” and “Groundhog Day.” The cast narrates as a group, divvying up the lines. One scene is conducted between a performer in a box seat and another in the mezzanine!
If I may be a (pre-redeemed) Scrooge for a moment: The enticing promise of the stars in the cast doesn’t really get fulfilled: Andrea Martin plays it straight, and LaChanze doesn’t get any solos. At two hours over two acts (plus a 15 minutes intermission), this A Christmas Carol feels too long. It’s also a bit rich to be offering a lesson against avarice and yet charge up to $179 a ticket. With so many theaters all over the city offering the same story (at far less cost), the Broadway production is not a must-see.
But there’s that real snow, and the warm lanterns, and those bells… and the uplifting message that Scrooge can finally hear: “Change is within all of us. It’s why life is such a thrill.”
A Christmas Carol Ethel Barrymore Theater Adapted by Jack Thorne from Charles Dickens. Directed by Matthew Warchus. Set and costume design by Rob Howell, lighting design by Hugh Vanstone, sound design by Simon Baker, composed, orchestrated and arranged by Christopher Nightingale, movement by Lizzi Gee. Cast: Campbell Scott as Ebenezer Scrooge, Andrea Martin as Ghost of Christmas Past, and LaChanze as Ghost of Christmas Present/Mrs. Fezziwig. Erica Dorfler as Mrs. Cratchit, Dashiell Eaves as Bob Cratchit, Hannah Elless as Jess, Brandon Gill as Fred, Evan Harrington as Fezziwig, Chris Hoch as Father/Marley, Sarah Hunt as Belle, Matthew Labanca as Nicholas, Alex Nee as Ferdy, Dan Piering as Young Ebenezer/George, and Rachel Prather as Little Fan. Sebastian Ortiz and Jai Ram Srinivasan share the role of Tiny Tim. Running time: 2 hours and 15 minutes (including one intermission) Tickets: $49 to $179 A Christmas Carol is on stage through January 5, 2020.
A Christmas Carol Broadway Review: Dicken’s Tale with Campbell Scott as Scrooge, Andrea Martin and LaChanze as Ghosts, food assaults, and real snow Who knew that “A Christmas Carol” could be so dangerous!

Mac Qin)
MEMANG RIZALIS ENT.)
Shura)
Nicholas Wang)
Slava Myronov)
Bernard Spragg. NZ)
