it’sjeaninemason This past Friday, I had the privilege of visiting with asylum seekers in New York City. Giving back and being in service to the community fed my soul during this difficult time. I’m happy to say this is a positive post! I was so impressed and moved by the care and concern our city is showing these families. I live in New York. I believe in our great state. And I am proud of what I witnessed. Our incredible public servants partner with community based orgs, faith based orgs and people who just care and want to be helpful to meet these migrants with dignity. It’s an impossible task they’ve been dealt and yet everyday on average 600-700 people arrive seeking refuge, and these hardworking New Yorkers do what they can to keep them safe, fed and equipped to make their way in this country. Day 06 - Monday, July 08, 2019

This morning I begin my day volunteering with New York Cares. After completing the digital orientation, I was signed up to participate in Meal Service at St. Peter's Senior Center. It was an amazing experience to volunteer in the kitchen with such wonderful individuals, Helen, Jackie, Dianne, Charles and Jermaine had such a lovely energy - and the passion they shared was inspiring. There should be such initiatives all over the world facilitating services to all non-profits and social organisations. Currently New York Cares engages 65,000 volunteers in service each year. 

Flushing mini food tour was next on my agenda. I made way to Soy Bean Chen Flower Shop, they have flowers for all occasions and the shop sells creamy tofu. The tofu texture was absolutely amazing - it was the lightest, silkiest, yummiest savoury tofu I had ever had - Flushing’s freshest tofu. Next stop was Joe’s Steam Rice Roll, Joe Rand is the only person in New York grinding rice, instead of using rice flour, resulting in a gossamer-thin roll of exquisite flavour and texture. 

I sat down to eat the delicious prawn rice rolls, but to my surprise the helping was too much for me to finish - considering i had already indulged in the savoury tofu. I had just begun thinking about getting it wrapped up for take away, and perhaps hand it over to someone on the streets. With this thought, i had this lady walk up to me, as i was still sitting at the counter and contemplating my next move - she asked me how my meal was - I looked down at my plate and looked up at her and asked if she wanted to try for herself? She looked at me confused, as i moved my plate closer to her and as she reached over and gave it a try. 

We immediately connected and started talking and she became my tour guide. Her name was Tina, she was originally from China, and had moved to New York with her husband about 50 years ago, she had a young heart and i couldn't wrap my head around the fact that she was 80 years old but looked her age. She also told me about how she had visited Karachi, while on a cruise through in 1965 - she had some amazing stories to share. She also offered to show me around Flushing’s and the new developed China Town in the city of New York, unlike the older China Town in Lower Manhattan and i did not refuse. We walked around as she pointed out different eateries and restaurants and told me stories about where she sits and catches up with her friends. She took me to a Chinese herb pharmacy, there was a doctor available who would make medicine for the customers and some remedies were already available. It was heartwarming that such a short while spent with her, felt like i had known her for a long time - parting ways felt a little disappointing - how sometimes I would like to keep more than moments, yet I know that, that is all we have. I walked over to the Town Hall for the open mic. 

When I reached Town Hall, I met the moderator Bobby Gonzalez - is it strange to that i was all the way across the city, and the Bobby was the first person i met at the Quaker, meeting which was two blocks away, on the fifteenth street - I felt like it was too much of a coincidence? Though I tell myself there is no such thing as a coincidence. 

I went to attend the open mic as a listener, as i had no intentions of standing up to perform, but Bobby had a way with the people around, and i strangely felt comfortable enough to stand up and read something i had written and saved on my phone. I have to say it was a little liberating, I was told that my writing sounded lyrical - I would take that as a compliment. I walked to the station and Nancy, one of the performers walked back with me, something she said stayed with me and gave me something to think about,  she said that "one must write from the scar, but not the wound". I thought that was beautifully put, but I feel the opposite, that one must write from the wound but feel from the scar, when you do. We talked more about where i was from, she was curious about Pakistan, and our conversation was cut short as her stop was around the corner - and that was the end of the day.

Mercury. Another Beauty i spotted, while traveling around on foot. Exploring on foot have always been my favorite thing, You get to see each thing surrounding properly.
