I’m so glad that we’ve mostly gotten away from making crutchie the “small innocent too-pure-for-this-world” newsie. While he is loyal to the end, I like to think that he has a sort of mean sense of humor and swears and trips people with his crutch just cause he can. But when it really comes down to it he will be there for the other newsies and will stay up all night just listening to them talk, etc. but he’s not this small innocent guy. None of them are. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

Blood Dripping Down the Alley Walls - Whumptober2023
He was past the point where he was truly aware of his own actions. If he had to put words to it, it was almost like he was watching himself from behind. Or someone from the windows above the dark little alley they were in. Not that they should be. This wasn’t anyone’s business apart from their own.
For a second, he stepped back. The blood dripping off his knuckles smeared across his face as he wiped the sweat off his brow. His breath was burning from exertion. Somewhere in the chaos, his hat sat in a pool of blood, the dark fabric slowly dyed red as it lay discarded on the ground.
The Delancey Brothers find their dad in the Trolley Worker strikes. They're pissed.
For day 28 of @whumptober . Also on AO3. Inspired by this art by @crystallizedtwilight

The man below him was unrecognisable. He bore no resemblance to either of the sons he abandoned. Except, in some ways, they did. He’d been a cold and heartless man, who’d abandoned his sons, who in turn became cold and heartless men.
Weisel had told them that their father would be among the trolley workers, he told them that if they went off course, if they got distracted, just this once, he wouldn’t be counting. They hadn’t shown anything at the time, but when they saw him among the crowds, something within him, something he’d hidden and pushed down, unlocked.
He’d noticed first, then Oscar. After looking at each other, it hadn’t been a question of if, more just a question of how. Morris had pulled his back by his collar, throwing him on the harsh ground and watching him skid backwards until he hit the trash cans at the end.
It was satisfying to see the confusion on his face. The crunch of his ribs against his boots as he’d kicked him, the loss of concentration and the way he disconnected, let his body take over as he stamped on his chest. Secured the knuckle dusters on his hand as he threw his hand down onto his face. Kicking his legs and picking him up just to hit him against the ground. Again. Again. Again. Until a crack rings against the tall buildings of an alleyway.
His hands were glossy with blood. Drips fell off his knuckles as he waited to catch his breath. Oscar kept on going. There was a fire within both of them that had been steadily growing for years and here was the gunpowder. Here was the alcohol to their molotov cocktail, ready to blow in their faces yet they didn’t care if they died. Who was going to miss them? They all died in the end anyway.
There was a pipe glinting near the start of the alleyway. His ankle hurt as he wavered to get it. Their dad wasn’t weak, he’d fought back to the best of his ability until they’d swamped him until the point that he lay back and took the beating.
The rust scratched his hand as he turned it. Turning his head, he saw his dad’s face whiten, in the parts that he could see from the blood dribbling down his face from where they’d cracked his skull. Oscar took his knuckle dusters off him as he lifted it above his head, both hands on the bottom as he harnessed all his strength to rain it down on him.
Something crunched as it hit. His breath was in his ears, blood pumping as his eyes widened and a grin grew on his face. Oscar pushed the brass knuckles onto his hands as he reached back and joined the fight.
He disconnected. His brain shut off, like he wasn’t in control, like he couldn’t remember what he was doing as he was doing it. The only thing he remembered, later on, as they walked away to clean themselves up, was the still body of their father in the alley. His blood pooling into the drain, his likeness to themselves destroyed by the very heirs he’d made.
God, he fucking wished he didn’t get up again. If he died in that alley, stayed there unidentified until some resident kicked up a fuss about a stink, he’d die a happy man. A very, very happy man.

I am so intrigued by the Delanceys, something I wouldn't have been brave enough to say when I first got into newsies in 2017 because the fandom, at least on Tumblr, was a bit black and white, the kind that says "if you like a character you condone their actions". I don't, I just like their characters.
Also context and story really change how the audience sees characters. For this I went Peaky Blinders, violence, blood everywhere, revenge. In a Peaky Blinders context, they wouldn't be evil scum, just milder characters who hold some bad opinions but in terms of their actions? Nothing compared to that show.
Anyway, enough analysis. I love how I wrote this, all the blood imagery, it was cathartic to write someone full of rage.
I also saw the UK newsies and that is my favourite version now. The set! The characters! It felt so much more lived in, I also found it funny that the poster made them look like Peaky Blinders.
Thanks for reading!

Who is the dad of the group in Wallflower AU because I feel like its Specs but something tells me other wise
There are a few dads in the group.
For the Manhattan Bunch, Specs and Jack are both dads in their own ways !
Specs has an open door policy and people tend to crash at his house a lot because his parents aren’t around he he has his own place. His house has this sort of ‘safe’ feeling to it. A lot of the group can sleep easier at Specs’ house than they can in their own - Bumlets’ house is the same but that’s because his parents adopted all his friends, he isn’t responsible enough to be a group dad. /affectionate
Some live with Specs permanently, as in they have moved in with him. Dutchie, Blink, Skittery & Tumble, Spike (OC) and Elmer. (In order of who moved in from first to most recently in the Wallflower Timeline) The others refer to them as “The Specs Household”.
And most of the wingmen have keys to his house ! The wingmen being Specs, Skittery, Bumlets, Racer, Blink, Swifty, Dutchie, Pie-Eater, Snoddy and Katherine.
Jack’s the dad in the sense he’s someone the others go to when they need to talk. When he escapes Snyder he ends up moving in with Medda and Crutchie and Medda also has an open door policy for the group. In terms of Jack and Specs though, Specs has his open door policy, Jack has his “Always available” policy. Meaning the others can message/call him at ANY time. He doesn’t care if he’s sleeping and they wake him, he’ll pick up.
He never has his phone on silent for this reason - He’d much rather one of his friends call and wake him than deal with an issue by themselves.
That and he’s the sort of leader of the Manhattan group? That sort of automatically makes him a parental figure so some of the slightly younger ones.
Henry also sort of falls into a parental role but specifically for The Bros. (Henry, Finch, JoJo, Buttons and Elmer) He just has to babysit them because they’re idiots.
Now, the dads of the BROOKLYN Bunch are Hot-Shot and Graves, as I’ve mentioned in previous posts, they’re some of the oldest. Graves has always been there for everyone through everything they’ve gone through, and Hot-Shot is always on call if people need support.
But overall, the group as a whole (Both Hattan and Brooklyn) It’s probably Jack and/or Specs.

Character Profile: Race
Real Name: (none) Higgins (Trading card) However, the real Racetrack Higgins was named Ed.
Nickname and Meaning: Racetrack, Racer, or Race, because he likes to gamble on horse races. (He also gambles using other games, but he probably either got into races first or likes them the most)
Age: Unsure, but he was 18 in the first draft of the film script. (Highlights of the 1991 Script)
Gender: Race is always played by a man.
Family: Race is an orphan, (Trading card) but he may have siblings we (and possibly Race himself) don’t know about. He does have three cousins who live in Brooklyn (one named Joey) (Interview with Adrienne Storrs) but again, its not clear if he knows of their existance.
Race…:
Likes to gamble. Race is shown gambling with other newsies, (Newsies Film script, pages 6, 7, 13, 123, 134) frequently talks about gambling, (Newsies Film script, pages 35, 82, 84) (Newsies Live script, page 9) and even uses gambling- themed metaphors. When the price of the paper goes up, Race says “It's a rigged deck -- why waste time kiddin' ourselves? They set the price, we gotta pay it.” (Newsies Film script, page 40) He also seems to be pretty good at gambling- Race wins 10 games out of 10 with Snoddy (Newsies Film script, page 7) and has enough cash to spare that he can casually give Davey 25 cents. (Newsies Film script, page 17)
Isn’t afraid of anything. When Snyder, the man who could imprison him at any moment, shows up at the lodging house, Race doesn’t even flinch. He just focuses on distracting Snyder so Jack doesn’t get in trouble. (Newsies Film script, pages 73, 74) He also directly antagonizes the Delancey brothers many times, despite knowing that they will attack him,  (Newsies Live script, pages 8, 9) (Newsies Film script, page 12) and goes to attack Wiesel as soon as the fight breaks out. (Newsies Live script, page 44)
Constantly thinks about romance. His first line is asking Albert if he was dreaming about “a pretty girl”. (Newsies Live script, page 4) He also attempts to get his papes for free by sweet talking Wiesel (Newsies Live script, page 10) and flirts with Miss Medda. (Newsies Film script, page 84) Race’s romantic intentions may not be purely directed at girls- when Jack says that they can’t beat up anyone who doesn’t join the strike, Race replies “Whatta we s'pose to do, kiss 'em?”. Race could be making a joke, but Jack replies “I personally wouldn't go that far, Race”, making it seem like Race could be seriously considering seducing the working boys of Manhattan into striking. (Newsies Film script, page 80)
Is mean when he’s jealous. As soon as Davey and Les mention having parents, Race snaps at them, (Newsies Live script, page 23) and he mocks Crutchie’s picket sign behind his back when he sees that the other newsies like it. (Newsies Live script, page 40) He also attempts to keep Davey an outsider, by interrupting him when he tries to talk to Katherine. (Newsies Live script, page 49)
Feels a strong sense of community with the newsies. Race is the most upset when Jack scabs, and later when he leaves for Santa Fe. (Newsies Film script, pages 108, 134) He’s also the first one to notice when Crutchie comes back from the Refuge. (Newsies Live script, page 76) This could be because he lived at the lodging house for most of his life- the newsies became like his brothers. (Trading card)
Is actually pretty smart. When Les says that he has a mom and a dad, Race replies “Hey, ain’t we the hoi polloi?” (Newsies Live script, page 23) Hoi polloi is ancient Greek for “the common people”. Not only is Race speaking in an obscure language, his insult has several meanings- hoi polloi sounds like an insult even if you don’t know what it means, and the meaning could be taken as mocking Les for not being a normal newsie (by being a normal person), or as calling Les stuck up. It also takes a lot of smarts to be good at gambling- Race would have to have a firm grasp of probability and body language, and have a very good memory, to consistently win money on games of chance.
May have ADHD. Race constantly has a cigar with him, but never smokes it- he could use it as a way to stim without drawing attention to himself. He is also very touchy, often without seeing if someone wants to be hugged first. Lastly, Race has a very short attention span. In Carrying the Banner, Albert steals his cigar while he’s buttoning his shirt. He doesn’t remember to finish buttoning it, and it stays that way for the rest of the show. In King of New York, he appears just as sad about Jack and Crutchie’s disappearances as the other newsies- until Kath tells him about their front page article. Then, he immediately forgets about them, even when the other newsies are having none of it. (Newsies Live script, page 47)
Headcanon Fuel:
If Race is Italian, why does he have such a non- Italian sounding last name?
What happened to Race’s family?
How did Race get into gambling?
Where did Race learn ancient Greek phrases?
WHY did Race learn ancient Greek phrases?
Why is Race named after horse races instead of any other kind of betting?
Why does Race gamble at Sheepshead (a racetrack in Brooklyn) (Newsies Film script, page 7) if Spot is so territorial and frightening?
Actors and Physical Appearance:
Max Castella
Tumblr media
Ryan Breslin
Tumblr media
Giuseppe Bausilio
Tumblr media
Ben Tyler Cook
Tumblr media
Daniel Switzer
Tumblr media
Race is described as “an Italian beanpole” in the film script. (Newsies Film script, page 16) He is tall and thin, with messy brown hair and light eyes. He accessorizes with a (hopefully) unlit cigar that he keeps with him at all times. As he is Italian, he might have darker skin than some of the other Caucasian newsies.

part 2 to this post. It’s a little more in depth and longer, sorry. Lyrics are in red :)
I have a friend I call/When I've bored myself to tears/And we talk until we think we might just kill ourselves/But then we laugh until it disappears Race and Albert basically became the Newises leaders when Jack disappeared, so the idea that they act as each other’s therapist (as most best friends do). Race uses humor to deflect his emotions, and Albert…is Albert. They’ve had to use these coping mechanisms many times throughout their lives, too many times for teenagers. Late night talks on the rooftop, fire escape, or on one of their bunks are sometimes the only thing keeping them alive.
And last night I blacked out in my car/And I woke up in my childhood bed/Wishin' I was someone else, feelin' sorry for myself/When I remembered someone's kid is dead again, this one goes to Albert. Part of Jacob Fisher’s Albert backstory was that he had a little brother, Benji, who died(?) in the refuge, so Splasher’s death would bring back the memories of losing his brother. Seeing Buttons and Tommy Boy react the same way he did makes it that much harder, he wants to help them get through it but he doesn’t now how.
Jesus Christ, I'm so blue all the time/And that's just how I feel/Always have and I always will/I always have and always will in the part 1 of this post, I have this part to the older Newises, and it still is them, but for this post, it’s specifically Jojo. He, like most of the Newises, never learned how to properly handle and communicate emotions. Years and years of suppressing emotions and tangling them into this knot leaves him in the weird numb state where he doesn’t feel like he feels anything anymore. With the fight, Jack’s disappearance, and then Splaher’s death, the knot comes untangled and Jojo breaks.
And it's 4 AM again/And I'm doin' nothing/Again and finally, Jack. Jack had no idea what’s going on at the lodging house, but he knows he left his brothers after a huge fight. He knows they’re all injured as has to assume that someone’s dead. The guilt eats at him while he’s hiding at Medda’s theater. He wants to go back, to comfort them, but he can’t. thank you for coming to me Ted talk (and reading the whole thing<3)
