doing an interpretation of the new invention lyrics with my sibling rn and. it's. ughhhh
we're super stuck on the "read and riot" thing
the only thing that comes up when googling it is a book with the same title by nadya tolokonnikova, and i don't really know how to connect that to the rest of the lyrics
overall the song seems to be from the perspective of someone being dragged away from something they believe in/are a part of by the "you" character. the speaker suspects that the other person is lying to them in order to keep them away from that something. the other person has good intentions, but is accidentally making the situation worse and causes the speaker to have even more "bad dreams" instead of less - so they get told to shut up.
and there's a fuckton of religious vocabulary used in the lyrics so, yknow. probably a safe bet to say the song could be abt feeling like you're drifting away from your religion and having conflicted thoughts abt that
the architect could mean "the great architect" which is how some people describe god. i think.
but the girl???? who is the girl??? breezy????
genius dot com is useless here. they don't get idkhow like i do. (i don't get it either.)
I've been thinking about this design for a while! This song really reminds me of Carmen and Herb, especially hinting at some things Herb knows about Carmen that no one else does 👀 I'm very happy with how this turned out!
if the featured artists have any issues with me posting this edit please tell me!
anyhow i couldnt help but relate this song to Arthur, but then started relating it to Reverb instead. the resistance of bad dreams and ‘things’ is Arthurs thing, what with him losing sleep and dealing with possessive demons. but the idea of Reverb being a ‘new invention’ stands out to me a lot. id figure most demons are just corrupted human souls, but Reverbs bio says hes being used to study another redacted property, which gives me a lot of sciencey and ‘artificially created with a purpose’ vibes. i dont know mini rant over
