Snow Angels
Draco Malfoy x Reader
Hello, this is my first time ever posting anything. This is something I started to write years ago, for myself and I've just found it again and finished it off. I'm quite proud of it and I hope you enjoy :) x
I know this is meant to be a Draco x reader one shot but I can only write in third person POV so I hope this is still okay! :)
Summary: In which both Y/N and Draco find happiness and comfort in each other and both find the snow beautiful so they make snow angels.
Tumblr media
The cold winter air brushed against Y/N’s face as she walked towards the castle. She held her Gryffindor scarf tighter around her neck as she blew puffs of air out of her mouth. You know who had returned, she knew it, Dumbledore knew it, everyone knew it. The question was though, what was going to happen. I mean it's quite obvious really, but that still didn't stop the questions flying around the school in everyones state of panic.
As Y/N approached the castle she could hear the quiet murmurs of students conversations as she walked past, the sound of running footsteps of the first years and the sound of rare laughter that isn't heard much around the castle these days, that brought a small glimpse of a smile onto her face.
She wished it could go back to when she was a first year, when her only worry was what house she would be sorted into and who she would sit with in her new classes. But now as she had come into her 6th year at Hogwarts, she worried about almost everything, from her friend Harry Potter and his other two friends, Hermione and Ron, to the school and her future, Dumbledore and everyone she cares about. She knew that her once happy and carefree life was slowly taking a drastic turn towards paralysing fear and possibly death.
As Y/N walked towards the Gryffindor common room she heard loud footsteps approaching her, fast. She stopped and turned to catch a glimpse of who was rushing to their destination and caught a glimpse of Draco Malfoy, pulling at his tie and looking behind him every 2 seconds with sheer panic written all over his face. Y/N wondered what had him so worked up.
"Draco, are you alright?" Y/N asked suddenly, causing Draco to jump slightly and cast his eyes towards her.
Nobody would class Draco Malfoy and Y/N to be friends exactly, but, they did talk a lot more often then people knew. They shared a few laughs when they sat together in potions, if they ran into each other in the hallway they would always smile at each other and share their quiet greetings towards one another. Y/N considered Draco a friend but she always wondered if he felt the same.
Y/N did slightly care for the boy, especially since she knows how he is treated by his father Lucius Malfoy. She never really understood why a father would treat his son the way Lucius so harshly treats Draco, and even though Draco would never admit it to anyone but himself, he had also slowly started to care for Y/N. He saw how her eyes lit up when he spoke to her about potions and how they would fill with tears if someone mentioned her parents. He would never tell her, but he always caught her staring at him across the great hall, him always finding himself doing the same. He knew that deep down inside, there was another side of her, a sad, fragile side of her that needed someone to talk too but was too proud to show weakness, just like he was. They were similar in that sense.
"Uh, yes Y/N, m'fine. Just in a hurry" Draco replied as he came to a complete halt not more than 3 feet away from where she stood. Y/N raised an eyebrow knowing what Draco had just said was not in fact true. The way his eyes continued shifting around, observing his surroundings and the way he continued to pull at his slightly untied tie made her look at him with a raised eyebrow at his obvious lie.
"I don't believe you." Y/N had simply said, folding her arms across her chest. It was now Draco who rose an eyebrow at her, a small smile appearing on his face.
"And why don’t you believe me?" Draco then replied, the small glimpse of a smile not disappearing off his face.
"Well let's see, you're rushing down the corridor, looking behind you like you're being chased by a dragon and you look a mess." Y/N stated, counting on her fingers as she went. "Now are you going to tell me what's wrong or are you going to be stubborn?" Y/N had then said, before Draco even had a chance to reply.
Draco stood there, staring at her. He wondered why she cared, wondered why she took time out her day to ask him if he was alright, and, as he stood there he wondered what he was going to reply with. He knew he couldn't tell her that he was a death eater and was helping other death eaters sneak into the castle to kill the headmaster. No, there was no way he could tell her that. One, he knew as soon as he told her that, she would hate him and he knew he wouldn't be able to deal with another person hating him, and two, he couldn't put her in danger, he would never live with himself if something were to happen to her because of him. The one person who gave him the time of day without a hidden agenda, the one person who spoke to him even after everything he's done.
"Draco? You still with me hun?" Y/N asked, frowning at him as he seemed to have blanked out, staring straight at the wall behind her. Y/N walked towards him and rested a hand on his upper arm, startling him slightly. Draco looked into her eyes, a frown resting upon his face. She was starting to worry, she had never seen Draco like this. "Draco?" She whispered moving some hair off of his forehead that had stuck there from the layer of sweat that covered him. This action shocked Draco, but he didn't let it show.
"Come, sit." She lightly demanded, softly pulling him toward a small bench that was a few metres away from where they stood. They both sat, Y/N not taking her eyes off of Draco as his eyes now looked everywhere but at her. He was avoiding answering the question, she knew that, and she wasn't going to push.
They sat in silence for a few moments, Draco's knee bouncing up and down and Y/N still staring at him, observing him with the small frown still on her face, wondering if and when he would say something, anything at all. But after a few more moments, she knew that what ever was bothering Draco, he didn't want to tell her.
"So guess what I did?" Y/N asked, attempting to turn the topic of conversation in another direction, hoping to take his mind off of what he was thinking so deeply about. Draco's head turned towards her, his eyebrow raising in curiosity. "So I was walking back to the castle right? And the ground is of course covered in snow, and me being the absolute klutz that I am, I slipped and fell on this hill and I continued to roll down the hill, right down to the bottom and when I stopped rolling I just casually got up and acted as if nothing happened." Y/N concluded, hoping that one of her newly embarrassing stories, could bring a small smile on Draco's face. Y/N remembered the absolute horror that she felt only a half an hour ago, when she got off the ground and saw a group of first years watching from down the field, pointing and laughing at her. Draco snorted slightly and laughed, he actually laughed, a real genuine laugh, which then made Y/N smile in return.
Y/N had always loved Draco’s laugh, she always wished she could hear it more often. She turned towards him and smiled, glad that her plan had worked, even if she was mortified to tell anyone else what had happened and wishing the ground would have ate her up she was glad it was Draco that she told and that it was able to bring a smile to his face.
"I wish I could have seen that." Draco had then said, still smiling towards her.
"I'm glad my embarrassment could bring a smile as large as yours to your face." Y/N grinned. She was making progress. Draco smiled softly at her, looking down at the ground, a small blush appearing onto his cheeks.
They both sat quietly for a few moments, both staring ahead. It wasn't an awkward silence, it was nice. Draco appreciated Y/N’s company, he felt safe just having her there next to him. He knew deep down that if she was to find out what he was hiding, he would lose her and he knew, oh god he knew, that if he lost her, lost the one person he honestly truly cared about, it would ruin him, ruin him more than he already was. He wouldn’t tell anyone that though, especially his father, that he cared for her. Cared for the girl that the wouldn’t exactly call a friend but the girl that was just always there.
Y/N felt the same. Having Draco just sitting there next to her made her feel safe. She knew things were changing and that frightened her, it frightened her more than she would admit. She felt like after everything that has changed recently, Draco was the only constant, the only person that is still there, the same way he’s always been there. Not exactly in her life I guess, but, just always there.
If he didn't want to tell her what was bothering him, she wouldn't force him too. She knew that somewhere deep down inside of her that it wasn't a good thing, especially if his father was involved and she, of course, was scared for Draco's safety but she didn't exactly know how to help him. Even though, she knew she somehow assumed that Lucius has most likely gotten Draco involved with the Dark Lord, she still felt so safe with him, comfortable with him.
She wished he would confide in her. Tell her every worry, every doubt that runs through his head. She hopes that he feels as comfortable around her as she does around him, she wants to ask him if he trusts her, but she doesn’t.
After a few more moments she felt Draco look at her. She turned her head and he was. He was staring at her with some sort of longing look in his eyes, she lightly frowned. What was going through his head? She then gave him a soft smile, one that he returned, his eyes slightly glassy.
"Can you come with me?" Draco asked suddenly. "I want to take you somewhere" He then added, standing up. Draco reached his hand out, holding it front of Y/N, an invitation for her to grab it.
Y/N just stared at his hand and didn't say anything or make a move to grab it. It was like she was frozen in shock that he was wanting to grab her hand and take her somewhere. This is the most progress she’s had with Draco in the 6 years that she’s known him, and all in one day? She didn’t know how to react. Would it be to much if I hugged him? Y/N thought to herself.
"It's okay if you don't want to" Draco quickly added after a few seconds, nervous almost, dropping his hand back to his side and scratching the back of his head with the other. Y/N shook her head quickly standing up. "No, no I want to" Y/N said after she stood, smiling at him softly. She didn’t want Draco to think she didn’t want too, because man, did she want to. A glimpse of a smile appeared on Draco's face causing Y/N to then smile softly in return.
They didn't move for a few moments. They just stood there staring at one another, so close to each other that Draco could feel Y/N’s cold breath fanning his face. Y/N’s heart was racing, a million thoughts running through her head. She could feel her cheeks slowly heating up. God he was beautiful, she thought. She had never stood so close to Draco before, she knew he was an attractive man but standing this close made her realise how damn beautiful he really was. He almost looked, vulnerable?
Draco cleared his throat, looking away slightly, “Shall we go?" He asked her.
"Oh, uh yeah" Y/N stumbled through her words, clearing her throat. What just happened? She thought to herself.
"So where too?" Y/N asked after a few seconds. She was still slightly flustered and she could feel her face burning. Draco said nothing, he just softly grabbed her hand, intertwining his fingers with hers and pulling her softly down the corridor. Y/N was shocked, her heart continuing to race. She felt the blush rise on her cheeks, happy after the misunderstanding before that Draco still grabbed her hand. "What is happening?" She whispered to herself. Draco turned his head to look at her and she held her breath hoping he didn't hear her statement. She saw a glimpse of a smirk on his face from the corner of her eye but it was gone as quick as it appeared and he turned his head back to face ahead of him.
Y/N took a shaky breath, she knew that he heard her but she was grateful that he didn't say anything about it to embarrass her further, she’s already had enough embarrassment for one day.
They continued down the corridors, taking turns here and there, not saying a single word to one another, fingers intertwined in a comfortable silence. Draco had seemed to be slightly calmer now, though, he wouldn’t admit it was because of her.
Draco led Y/N outside of the castle, into the cold air. Snow was still lightly falling and Y/N could already feel the cold through her robes, her nose immediately turning pink. She used her other hand that wasn’t held tightly in Draco’s to pull her scarf around her neck tighter. Draco stopped walking, turning to face her, smiling softly.
Y/N looked up at him, being slightly shorter than him, noticing the light pink to his cheeks. All he was wearing was his thin white button down shirt, black vest and Slytherin tie. The top few buttons undone and the tie loose from when he pulling at it earlier. “Beautiful isn't is?" Draco muttered. Y/N stood there in silence, observing him. She was confused. Draco thought snow was beautiful?
“Yeah, it is” Y/N had said simply, still observing Draco. “Every time it snowed when I was younger, my parents and I would rush outside and make snow angels, it was always my favourite thing to do when it snowed. When they died, that tradition died with them. I couldn’t bring myself to do it without them y’know? It was always our thing that we would do together and I felt like it would never be the same if I was to do it without them, like I was betraying them in some weird way” Y/N then said quietly, no longer looking at Draco but looking out towards the fields. A glimpse of sadness crossed Y/N’s face as she thought of her parents, smiling softly.
Draco looked over at her, shocked that she shared that with him. Y/N had never spoken about her parents, to anyone, especially to him. Sure, basically the entire school knew that they had died but nobody knew how or even how old she was when they passed. Draco knew that even Potter didn’t know how they had died. The fact that she had shared that story with him made Draco feel something he never felt before, he wasn’t sure what that feeling was, happy, sad, loved? Whatever it was, he always felt it around Y/N and he never wanted that feeling to go away. It spread him with a feeling of warmth and comfort and he knew it was because of the girl standing in front of him.
“That’s a beautiful tradition Y/N” Draco said after a few moments went by. Y/N looked over at him, her eyes watery and a soft smile on her face. Y/N didn’t know why, but a feeling of relief spread through her body. She didn’t know whether it was because, for the first time ever, she finally shared apart of her memories she had of her parents with someone else or whether it was because it was Draco she shared it with, and, that he thought her silly little tradition she used to share with her parents, was beautiful.
A small tear slipped from Y/N’s eye, slowly rolling down her cheek and Draco immediately reached up to wipe it away, the hand that still held Y/N’s squeezing tighter to show her that he was there for her.
“Draco?” Y/N asked after a few beats, to which Draco responded with a quiet hum, acknowledging he heard her. “Will you make a snow angel with me?” Y/N asked quietly, another small tear rolling down her cheek and her heart beating rapidly. Draco looked over at her, shocked. The fact that Y/N just confided in Draco, telling him that she hadn’t made a snow angel since her parents died, especially with someone else, made his heart skip a beat and his cheeks to grow warm.
Draco didn’t say anything, not sure what to say. He always thought snow angels were stupid, never understanding what the whole hype was about. I mean, who would willingly, lay down in the freezing cold snow, to make something that disappears once more snow starts to fall anyways? Plus, he’s never done it, what if he does it wrong and Y/N looks at him like he’s a complete idiot? His dad never let him play in the snow, told him to not be such a child and to act like a man.
After Draco still didn’t respond to Y/N’s question, she started to worry. She doesn’t know why she ever thought Draco would want to make snow angels with her, they’re too old and it’s a childish thing to do. She didn't know why she asked him too to begin with. She hadn't done one in so long, but standing here right now, with Draco, she wanted nothing more then to make a snow angel with him.
“That’s okay, we don’t have too. I just thought, well I’m not completely sure what I thought. When I would make them with my parents, they made me so happy. I thought because of how scattered and scared you looked earlier that maybe this could help cheer you up and now saying it out loud makes me feel like a complete and utter idiot and I’m so-“ Y/N started to ramble before Draco cut her off.
“I would love to make snow angels with you Y/N”
Y/N smiled, a wide, bright smile and looked up at Draco with the purest and happiest look on her face that immediately made Draco smile back at her.
“I have to be honest with you though” Draco said, still smiling a sheepish smile. “I have never made a snow angel before and I’m going to need your help” Draco embarrassingly admitted, scratching the back of his head, something that Y/N has now noticed that he does when he’s nervous.
“That’s okay, I’ll teach you” Y/N smiled at Draco, pulling him towards the fields and into the snow. Draco was glad that Y/N didn't seem to judge the fact that he had never done something as simple as make a snow angel before, relief and happiness yet again rushing through his body.
After a few moments of Y/N trying to teach Draco the best she can, they lied in the snow for ages, making snow angels, laughing before Draco started a snow ball fight, resulting in Y/N yet again slipping on the snow, Draco laughing hysterically, bent over with his hands on his knees, laughing the hardest Y/N has ever heard him, as she struggled to stand back up off the ground.
Y/N never thought she could feel this amount of happiness in the snow again after she lost her parents, but being here now, with Draco she had never felt so happy, so safe. Her sad tears from earlier changing to happy tears as she laughed so hard, still struggling to stand up from the ground, slipping on the snow for the 8th time before Draco came over to help her up. As he reached his hand out to help her stand, she pulled him down into the snow next to her, laughing at the shocked look on his face. She loved him.
Draco had never smiled as wide as he was now, never laughed this loud, his cheeks were starting to hurt. As he lied there, in the snow next to Y/N, he thought about how he never knew someone could be this happy, this content and comfortable around another person, its like all his worries drifted away and all that mattered right now was her, this moment with Y/N. He reached over and grabbed her hand, their laughing subsiding, only small giggles escaping their lips now. He looked over at her and smiled, a wide smile as she looked up at the sky, a soft smile on her face and her breath heavy. He loved her too.
They never wanted this moment to end.
