oc redesign challenge: neopets paint brush edition

If you’ve ever played on the website Neopets, you’re probably familiar with these often coveted paint brushes. You could paint your Neopets to give them a whole new look! It was so much fun!

So then, what if you applied the same concept to your OCs? Here are some suggestions to get you started:

Pick a paint brush and an OC, or have someone pick for you via ask, and create a new design for them based on the theme of the paint brush.

This challenge works best for furry OCs but you can redesign your human OCs as well! Consider redesigning things like clothing, makeup, tattoos, or different hair colors/styles for your humans.

For a complete list of paint brushes, look up “jellyneo paint brushes.” And for examples of what painted pets look like, check out sunnyneo’s rainbow pool.

You don’t have to stay 100% true to Neopets’ designs. You can think outside the box. Be creative, be free, and most importantly, have fun!

I loathe some of the designs for xmas paint brushes on neopets, so… ima redo them 🙈🎄✨

Acara and Meerca got completely redone because their original designs are atrocious!! 😭 Blumaroo and Chomby merely received retouches because I thought the candy design was a really cute, so I just wanted to amplify the overall aesthetic. 🍫🍬

I know reindeer is an obvious concept for Acara, but I don’t mind because I think the result is really cute (and bc this is Neopets fan art, I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel lol). As for Meerca, a few kind of abstract ideas popped into my head, but the concept of a lump of coal felt the most fun to me. Is it a lump of coal carved to resemble a Meerca, or did a Meerca get stuck in a chimney? Both are plausible…

It’s not clear exactly what Blumaroo is supposed to be in his design, so I assumed it was meant to be candy cane like some of the other pets. Some pets receive more detail in their designs in later years, and I imagine Blumaroo would look like my retouch if he got the same treatment! More definition was added to this body to imitate the glittering of spun sugar. Chomby got a few of its design elements swapped because they just felt super clumsy beforehand. I kept the holly, but placed it on the wreath as a bow (again similar to other pets). I added detail to Chomby’s spikes to make them look more like peppermint bark, including putting crumbled pieces in the spots the holly was originally placed (this also looks much closer to Chomby’s base design!) More warmth and a bit of shine was added to its body to help get closer to the appearance of molded white chocolate, which looked extra cute with the retouched peppermint bark embedded in it!

Each design received touch ups and added detail to their strands of lights! ❤️💚💛💙 Meerca’s ribbon tail needed to look like those super glam velvet ribbons with the posable wire inside. I’m super happy with all of the looks so far~

If you told me like, 15 years ago that in the year 2023 the day after my 32nd birthday I'd be posting on tumblr about how much I love my collection of Neopets I'd have probably scoffed at the very idea. Truthfully I'd probably have said "yea, sounds about right." but that's not as funny.

But man, I know I get really invested in some for chunks of time and then lose interest and stop doing things consistently a lot, such is the nature of hyper-fixations and ADHD, but there's just something so peaceful about doing my daily things on Neopets and poking around the Discord community. Being able to have achieved so many childhood goals this year has given me such an odd sense of accomplishment in a way. Like I'd posted about before, one of my original pets to this account (Not my very first account, that ones is long forgotten sadly. But this is the "new" account I'd made back in high school when I was in a nostalgic "I want to do shit I did as a kid" phase, kinda ahead of the nostalgic craze on that one eh?) is xSpifftasticx who was a yellow Lenny (5,939 days old) that I'd always wanted to paint Pink, but could never afford the paint brush. The older community surrounding Neopets now is so friendly and helpful and there's so much more information out there how to do activities and stuff that I never understood as a kid it's just. I don't even know how to word it. Just amazing to be able to actually work towards a goal in the game and achieve it.

The other OG to this account pets are oo_Chaos_oo the mutant Hissi (5,938 days old) and xx_Kryll_xx the Christmas Kyrii (5,475 days old), and their names are just so much a product of the time and I love it. So much so that I felt like not naming my other pets with some combination of underscores, x's, or other symbols would be an injustice to the whole vibe of my account 😂

I'm just so happy to have started playing again just before the whole Faerie Festival thing because completing the quests got me to get a bunch of fountain fairy dips that got me pretty much every other customized pet. Except for _JackTheLass_ who was a morphing potion gift from a user on the Discord, and x_NiteMare_x who was painted from getting a Halloween paint brush from the trick or treat bags.

This is a long pointless post tbh, and maybe I should just not add all this nonsense to it because it ruins the aesthetic of it but whatever. I'm far from an aesthetic blog lmao I'm just feeling sappy or some shit. I slapped a read more on it, good enough lmao Anyways, here's to 16 years on Neopets, and to 16+ more!

god i wish i wouldn't have to explain the intricacies of the neopets economy to you guys to give the full context for this but. the new neopets team that took over from jumpstart pledged that they were going to curb the inflation of rare items, which is great because a lot of rare items are worth literally hundreds of millions of neopoints, they are unbuyable unless you've been playing actively for 20 years. they did this earlier with a site festival that included random loot boxes, some of which had Unbelievably Fucking Rare And Precious items worth 200 million neopoints apiece.

well.

today they have gone a step further. by releasing this year's trick-or-treat bags. and having the trick-or-treat bags be stuffed to the brim with unbelievably fucking rare stamps, weapons, paint brushes, defense magic, and other unbuyables. (all prohibitively expensive and in-high-demand types of items.)

jellyneo, the premier neopets website, has recorded prices of some items plummeting from 2,000,000 neopoints to 4,000 neopoints IN THE LAST THREE HOURS. this is when most people haven't even heard about the event or OPENED THEIR BAGS YET.

and of course. cherry on top. 20-year-old account holders are crytyping on the site events neoboard about how mean and cruel it is to make rare stamps part of the prize pool, because their entire identity hinges on being part of the neopian bourgeoisie, and they are having MELTDOWNS over their assets being devalued until they're part of the lowly proletariat.

this is a children's game for children btw.

none of the money is real.

i'm having such a good time.
