do you have any gintama fanfic recommendations?
Yeah I do!! A lot actually because when i first got into gintama i literally went through all of ao3 and read every story i thought was interesting
so here they are, broken up by category:
Gen:
Pandemonium by Xparrot: THE gintama fic rec. it’s a bit dated since it was written a full like, three years before the shogun assassination arc, so Takasugi’s characterization in particular is like. off. But the story still holds up AMAZINGLY. It’s got yorozuya feels, great writing, and a structure that reads like an easily believable serious gintama arc. (Actually, writing this makes me want to go back and reread it)
Withholding Care by Izanyas: This one….. I LOVED. IT’S GREAT. It’s got a great vibe. It’s in character and beautifully written with great banter and really striking character interactions. There’s implied Takagin, but I’m putting it in the gen category since you don’t have to read it that way if you want to.
Absence by Dearfriendicanfly: REALLY COOL character introspection piece. I love the insight that it gives into the way that Shoyou and Gintoki play off each other. It really speaks to gintama’s themes
Volcanolanche by naye: With the vacation arc crew minus the shogun and plus kyuubei back together, this is another one that reads like an actual gintama arc, complete with a fitting gintama arc ending. It’s got a lot of good funny moments as well as some more harrowing moments. I like this author’s take on the characters too.
Antigravity by UnidentifiedPie: SO. Neat. A really cool AU that features the joui war taking an alternative course; the earth was destroyed during the joui war, and the story follows a much younger Gintoki after he picks up an also-much-younger Kagura. It’s great- there are so many yorozuya family feels (Shinpachi shows up too) and Otose also plays a big role (always a plus) The latest chapter ended on a cliffhanger though so watch out for that.
Rainy Days are Best Spent at Home by UnidentifiedPie: AGAIN, yorozuya family feels. Just the best.
Shippy:
Whatever a sun will always sing by Eddiac: Takazura, Ginzura. Great, melancholy prose. This fic is a huge inspiration to me. The progression is poetic, the feelings are vivid, and the author is great at choosing which things to say outright and which things to leave implied.
Creature Comforts by Mangemouth: Ginzura, Stray Cats arc aftermath. this one is SO fucking funny to me. Like, ‘quote it to myself in my head when i’m walking to class and start laughing out loud’ funny. It’s got a great casual dynamic between Gintoki and Zura- and in the technical respect, I love how the author uses Otose’s perspective at the end.
The Most Important Things are Sometimes the Stupidest by Dearfriendicanfly: Konhiji. SUPER great character analysis that takes into account all of the absolute best parts of Hijikata and Kondo’s relationship.
It’s Polite To Bring KFC as an Apology for Trying to Kill Your Hosts on Christmas by Dearfriendicanfly: Takagin. I don’t think i can quite describe my feelings about this fic in words, especially not after 703. it’s just [incomprehensible groaning] I love this fic. It’s so. Heartwarming. It’s got a perfect aura of quiet hope. read this and pretend that this happened instead of 703.
Don’t judge a book by its cover by Lucienna: TsukkiSacchi, Ginzura. Sarutobi’s pov narration was so good, and it’s a two for two for my favorite gintama pairings. Definitely invokes the laugh rule too.
A good ending by Corvidity: Ginzura. This is everything i’ve ever wanted. The yorozuya + zura feelings are strong, and I LOVE zura’s characterization so much. It hits even harder because it feels like something that could happen after canon NOW. (I just reread this as i was typing up the recommendation and now i’m crying please read this)
Yorozuya got run over by a reindeer by Guycecil: Ginzura. More Yorozuya + Zura feelings, because I absolutely know what I’m about. This is such a fun seasonal piece it makes me wish that it was Christmas.
Rated M:
Fight on a Monday, Cry on a Tuesday, Throw Up on a Wednesday, but Always Laugh on Saturday and Sunday by Mangemouth: Ginzura. Would I even be a ginzura stan if i didn’t put Fight on a Monday in my recommendations? I’m not going to lie, the first couple of times I tried to read it I didn’t get past the ‘Gin-chan you brought me a mommy!’- calling zura the yorozuya mom is a pet peeve of mine, lol. But I’m so glad that I actually gave this a chance. The banter was AMAZING, the narration is HILARIOUS, and the PROSE. Oh my god. This is one of those fics that I go back to every couple of months just to reread.
Don’t ask questions if you’re not prepared for the answers by Deargodwhatisthatthing: Takazura. ALKSJDFLKSDJLFKJ THIS CRACKS ME UP EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I READ IT. The only really explicit part is at the beginning, after that it’s mostly just dirty jokes. But I swear to god it is one of the funniest fics I’ve ever read.
Authors:
All of these people are already featured on this post but I want to give blanket recommendations, so if you’re looking for more, you should check out these people:
Corvidity, Dearfriendicanfly, Mangemouth, Unidentifiedpie, Eddiac
So this is by no means an exhaustive list of all of the fics that I’ve read and enjoyed but I’m pretty sure I covered most of my favorites!! Hope this helps

I love that Vivi, raised as a young princess in the palace, went out and just brawled this much bigger boy. To a draw! He acknowledged her as his equal! And look at how happy she is about it - not gloating, just wholly pleased.

Vivi: If you pick this fight, how will that help Nami?
Luffy, to the villagers: Yeah... Sorry! I was wrong!
thud
Please call a doctor. Please save my friend.
Vivi: See, now they're being understanding.
Luffy: Yeah. You're really amazing.
This is all so much. Remember how mad tiny Luffy got at Shanks for not fighting the insulting bandit? Until now, his idea of a "real pirate" has been someone who fights to protect his dignity, whether that be to retaliate against bottle-smashing or paying someone back for shooting a crewmate. (Vivi was literally just shot in the shoulder! She's bleeding on the deck!) But Vivi calls him a terrible captain for being impulsive, and takes him to task for not focusing on what's important: getting help for Nami. Sure, he could beat those armed villagers. Of course he could, just like Shanks could've made the bandits pass out on the spot. But what then?
Luffy isn't used to thinking about consequences. But he's got a responsibility as a captain, and Vivi makes him see that responsibility means more than getting to ぶっ飛ばす punch the shit out of anyone who gets in their way.
Bowing down and apologizing, as Vivi is doing, is a big deal. It's showing contrition and humility, and taking responsibility for being the one to fuck up even though the villager was the one to hurt his crew. Luffy is having to reconsider his entire stance on what makes someone a real pirate. And a real pirate captain. He has to listen to a girl - a princess. Someone younger than himself they picked up two islands ago. And he has to do that while his crew watch him make that choice.
The fact that he doesn't hesitate here, once he listens to Vivi and thinks of the consequences? It's one of my favorite Luffy moments. He's making responsible choices and putting his crews' wellbeing ahead of his pride as the pirate he imagined himself to be as a kid. He's grown up enough to realize that he was wrong. Not just in trying to make this a fight, but (though he's highly unlikely to ever have the level of introspection necessary to realize) also wrong about Shanks' reaction to the bandit.
A captain has to do what's best for everyone. And being the strongest pirate doesn't mean you have to prove your strength in a fight.
So he makes the choice, and he's as polite with the villagers who shot Vivi as we've ever heard him be as he apologizes and asks for help. And when he gets it, Vivi goes "ね" - an interjection like "See?" or "Right?". (It's also the chapter title, it's that important!) And Luffy sees the diplomatic approach working, and his reaction is to be so impressed by Vivi's skills.
Honestly, there's nothing about this scene I don't love.

Robin: Hahah, seems like we don't want it!
After her first adventure as a Strawhat, Robin is catching on! It's not her captain's style to stay and accept thanks and a huge amount of free gold. Not when Luffy and the rest of the crew can "steal" a whole bunch of treasure and run away like true pirates! Like - she could totally stop them by explaining what's going on. But that would ruin their fun. (Robin is learning about fun!)
It's adorable.

Nami waking up in the middle of the night to find her whole crew (minus Sanji on duty in the crow's nest) keeping a bedside vigil does so many things to my heart. She's spent so much of her life completely alone, but now she is surrounded by friends.
Tumblr media
I love this wordless reaction! She looks around at them all snoring away, and tucks herself back in. She may be dangerously ill, but she's not been this safe and cared for since she was a little girl.

OH WAIT. I forgot one of my favorite Jaya moments, which is that Luffy loves cool beetles so much that he can't quite decide what would be better: a big stag beetle or the One Piece. (And also he took his sweet time coming back from one-punching Bellamy because he went beetle hunting on the way.)
Tumblr media
Luffy: Look Chopper! It's an Atlas!
Chopper: Atlas?
Luffy: Yeah! The Atlas and the Hercules are ones everyone in the world want the most!
Chopper: Huh? Stag beetles?!
Tumblr media
Chopper: Which is more awesome, that or One Piece?
Luffy: Hmmmmmmmm that's a tough one!
Tumblr media
Luffy: HERCULES!

Sanji: Yeah, it's because I was born in North Blue! Didn't I tell everyone?
NO Sanji, you did not! And how can you look so happy talking about your childhood?!
This is one of those revelations that, for me (who got into One Piece a couple of years after this was published) started out as "Huh, that's an interesting detail" and escalated into incoherent wailing with feels as Odacchi sprung that second backstory on us.

THIS MOMENT.
This is Luffy showing how much he's grown. He understands, now, why Shanks didn't fight the petty bandit in Party's Bar.
He didn't then. He was just a little kid.
Tumblr media
Shanks: Hey, wait, Luffy...
Luffy: No! I don't care anymore! I don't wanna be a wimp like you!
Tumblr media
Nami: Eh?
Shanks: Oh? You're gonna surpass me?
Ace: The next time we meet will be at the peak of pirates.
Here, now, in Jaya, Luffy is already the kind of pirate that Shanks was back then. The kind of man who understands there are fights you can only win by standing down, and that doesn't mean you're a coward. It just means you know your worth, and have nothing to prove to shitty strangers in the face of their petty insults.
He's not a little kid anymore.

Zoro: Anyone who can't remove this bandage and show the sign is a fake.
I love that Zoro is actually surprisingly cunning! Especially when it comes to protecting his crew.

Shanks: So you came, Luffy.
Box: Red-haired pirates' ookashira, "Red-haired Shanks".
A linguistic detail I've found fascinating on re-read is that Shanks' crew call him kashira rather than captain. Other crews usually call their leader some version of 船長 (senchou) or キャプテン (kyaputen) - both translated "captain". Some pirate leaders have fleets, and use some version of "commander", but kashira is particularly un-nautical? It's used for organization bosses. Bandits might have a kashira, but not pirates! And it's not just his crew: the first time he's introduced in present time here, the manga itself calls him ookashira - big boss, or leader of a large group.
I'm wondering if somehow for Shanks, there's only ever going to be one "captain". To the point where he's gotten his crew used to having a kashira rather than a senchou.
Or, you know. He's got a side gig to pirating that everyone but the reader knows about, and that's what his title refers to! It's One Piece; I don't so much have theories and analysis as vague thoughts in random directions.

The Luffy vs Zoro Whiskey Peak fight is honestly the most them:
Tumblr media
Luffy: Don't make excuses!
Zoro: WTF
Tumblr media
Zoro: (after failing to get through to Luffy for about 5 seconds) You shit for brains! Fine then, I'll do the life or death thing too! Better not regret dying!
But then, when Baroque Works tries to take advantage of the situation...
Tumblr media
Both: Shut the fuck up!
Tumblr media
Zoro: You're in the way!
Miss Valentine: AAAAAAAAAAAA

Luffy: So what if you are? If you're a king or if you're a god...! I don't care if someone's important. Because I'm a pirate!
The official translation can't fit the full "I don't care if you're a king or a god" bit, which is sad because Luffy is going this hard in Drum! And it's a pity to miss just how much Luffy doesn't care about status.
And it's a badass moment and have I mentioned how much I love Luffy?
